Economic Freedom And The Impact Of Technology On Productivity, Felix Tan, Ashok Robin, Thomas Tribunella Jan 2011

Economic Freedom And The Impact Of Technology On Productivity, Felix Tan, Ashok Robin, Thomas Tribunella

Articles

A well-developed body of literature has detected positive effects of technology investments on economic growth. We contribute to this literature by studying the joint effects of technology and economic freedom on economic growth. Using two different time points. 1990 and2000. and a sample of over 100 countries. we find that economic freedom enhances the effect of technology on economic growth. In fact, we find that the standalone effect of freedom is not as large as its interactive effect with technology.

Browser Web Storage Vulnerability Investigation: Html5 Localstorage Object, Daryl Johnson Jan 2011

Browser Web Storage Vulnerability Investigation: Html5 Localstorage Object, Daryl Johnson

Presentations and other scholarship

With the introduction of HTML5, the latest browser language, a new data storage technique, called localStorage, has been added to allow websites to store larger amounts of data for a long period of time on the user’s local system. This new technology does not (as of this writing) have a fully implemented independent interface to support end user control. Unlike cookies, there is not yet an interface for the user to block, alter or delete localStorage in web browsers. Nefarious users have files of data they utilize in their illegal activities that they need to preserve (stolen user information, credit …

Prediction-Based Virtual Instance Migration For Balanced Workload In The Cloud Datacenters, Shibu Daniel, Minseok Kwon Jan 2011

Prediction-Based Virtual Instance Migration For Balanced Workload In The Cloud Datacenters, Shibu Daniel, Minseok Kwon

Articles

Datacenters in the cloud today provide virtualized resources of CPU, memory, disk, and networks so that millions of users can use the services at the same time in an efficient and scalable way. One of the major challenges in these datacenters is load balancing and shifting. As a huge number of requests are sent to a particular datacenter or a group of servers are asked to process more than their fair share, some of the servers are overloaded, slowed down, hot spots are created, and even hardware failures may occur. This unbalanced load in the end deteriorates the performance of …

Analyst Forecast Accuracy And Firm Growth, Philip Siegel, Jeffrey Lessard, Khondkar Karim Jan 2011

Analyst Forecast Accuracy And Firm Growth, Philip Siegel, Jeffrey Lessard, Khondkar Karim

Articles

This study examines the affect of business segment industry specialization as a supplement to portfolio complexity on forecast error and Tobin’s Q. After controlling for diversification and growth potential, forecast error is negatively related to business segment industry specialization. Diversification (high growth firms) increases (decreases) forecast error. High growth, focused firms are associated with noncomplex portfolios and business segment industry specialization. Within a simultaneous equation model, forecast error does not predict the firm’s Tobin Q ratio; however, Tobin’s Q does predict whether analysts forecast accurately.

Moving Away From Programming And Towards Computer Science In The Cs First Year, James Heliotis, Richard Zanibbi Jan 2011

Moving Away From Programming And Towards Computer Science In The Cs First Year, James Heliotis, Richard Zanibbi

Articles

After completing a pilot study using the Python programming language to transition to Java within our first-year introductory programming sequence, our department opted to make a more radical change. We assert that our students are better served in their first year of study by a focus on problems in computer science and their solutions, rather than programming. Our new introductory sequence emphasizes algorithm development and analysis, object-oriented design, and testing. As in our pilot, programming is first done in Python, switching to Java when object-oriented design and static typing become advantageous. Students reported liking the problem focus of the courses, …

Potential Additional Revenues For Kosovo / [Presentation Given May 16, 2011], Lindita Toci Jan 2011

Potential Additional Revenues For Kosovo / [Presentation Given May 16, 2011], Lindita Toci

Theses

Kosovo has inherited a weak economy, and dilapidated infrastructure. The main objective of the Kosovo Government is to create preconditions for economic growth. The objective of this research is to find the potential for additional revenues, by finding possibilities to intervene on existing taxes and introducing new taxes, and in the same time to take into account the harmonization of taxes with EU and region countries. Three sources of potential extra revenues were considered such as VAT, excise tax, and introducing new tax as transfer on real estate and as transfer on vehicles.

Integer-Based Fully Homomorphic Encryption, Michael Snook Jan 2011

Integer-Based Fully Homomorphic Encryption, Michael Snook

Theses

The concept of fully homomorphic encryption has been considered the "holy grail" of cryptography since the discovery of secure public key cryptography in the 1970s. Fully homomorphic encryption allows arbitrary computation on encrypted data to be performed securely. Craig Gentry's new method of bootstrapping introduced in 2009 provides a technique for constructing fully homomorphic cryptosystems. In this paper we explore one such bootstrappable system based on simple integer arithmetic in a manner that someone without a high level of experience in homomorphic encryption can readily understand. Further, we present an implementation of the system as well as a lattice- based …

The Secret Is Out, Sarah O'Brien Jan 2011

The Secret Is Out, Sarah O'Brien

Theses

Family... what defines family is different for each individual. As we face a shrinking economy and difficult job placement, family is our primary focus as we get through the tough times. The nuclear family (husband, wife, children and dog) does not include divorce, extended family, aging family, or many other issues that trouble today's modern families. What if your family is not what society considers typical? What if your family includes gay parents or loved ones? With television shows like Modern Family and Grey's Anatomy, gay couples are more present but what are their real life experiences? The Secret Is …

Discrimination Of Surface And Volume States In Fully Depleted Field-Effect Devices On Thick Insulator Substrates, Robert Manley Jan 2011

Discrimination Of Surface And Volume States In Fully Depleted Field-Effect Devices On Thick Insulator Substrates, Robert Manley

Theses

The behavior of electronic devices fabricated on thin, lightly doped semiconductor layers can be significantly influenced by very low levels of non-ideal charge states. Such devices typically operate in a fully depleted mode, and can exhibit significantly different electrical properties and characteristics than their bulk material counterparts. Traditional interpretation of device characteristics may identify the existence of such non-idealities, but fail to ascertain if the origin is from within the semiconductor layer or associated with the interfaces to adjacent dielectric materials. This leads to ambiguity in how to rectify the behavior and improve device performance. Characterizing non-idealities through electrical means …

Illustrative Neighborhood Redevelopment, Bradley Bethel Jan 2011

Illustrative Neighborhood Redevelopment, Bradley Bethel

Theses

Urban planning is implemented under many theories and purposes. But often times, due to difference in public preferences, plans can become inconsistent and lack harmony with other neighborhoods. Design theories may become muddled in other design theories. Sometimes, even basic design principles are undermined or ignored completely. The city of Buffalo, New York is distinguished by several major characteristics in area planning. However, those plans have been threatened by inconsistent planning from the past sixty years. Only in recent years have plans been sought for more concise methods to preserve the past and establish newer, progressive plans. The Illustrative Neighborhood …

To complete this project, I have developed an online project and portfolio management application by using the software development life cycle methodology and project management methodology. The outcome of this project is a software product that helps in obtaining a general consensus as to which project has the highest priority. This priority awareness helps in resolving conflicts among the managers. This product …

A Study Of A Management Supported Single Minute Exchange Of Die (Smed) Program For The Flexible Packaging Industry, Jared Unterborn Jan 2011

A Study Of A Management Supported Single Minute Exchange Of Die (Smed) Program For The Flexible Packaging Industry, Jared Unterborn

Theses

The principle objective of this study was to quantify the effectiveness of a management supported process improvement program versus a non-management supported program. The test took two plants with the same machine and a similar job mix were chosen to implement a common process improvement program in the exact same way with the only difference being that one of the plants would have strong involvement from the management team. The data that was used to quantify this theory was an employee survey and data collection. The data showed Plant A's management supported program resulted in a 25% lower changeover time …

Correlating Ipv6 Addresses For Network Situational Awareness, Jason Froehlich Jan 2011

Correlating Ipv6 Addresses For Network Situational Awareness, Jason Froehlich

Theses

The advent of the IPv6 protocol on enterprise networks provides fresh challenges to network incident investigators. Unlike the conventional behavior and implementation of its predecessor, the typical deployment of IPv6 presents issues with address generation (host-based autoconfiguration rather than centralized distribution), address multiplicity (multiple addresses per host simultaneously), and address volatility (randomization and frequent rotation of host identifiers). These factors make it difficult for an investigator, when reviewing a log file or packet capture ex post facto, to both identify the origin of a particular log entry/packet and identify all log entries/packets related to a specific network entity (since multiple …

Numerical Investigation Of Fluid Flow And Heat Transfer Effects In Minichannels And Microchannels Under H2 Boundary Condition, Viral Dharaiya Jan 2011

Numerical Investigation Of Fluid Flow And Heat Transfer Effects In Minichannels And Microchannels Under H2 Boundary Condition, Viral Dharaiya

Theses

Deviations in heat transfer predictions by classical theory for single-phase laminar flow in microchannels have been mainly attributed to surface roughness, deviations in channel dimensions, errors in measurement, entrance and exit effects. Identifying correct thermal boundary conditions in a given application also plays an important role in accurate estimation of heat transfer coefficients. Different thermal boundary conditions generally applied in fluid domain are: T, H1, and H2. However, there are very few solutions available for the heat transfer under the H2 boundary condition which is the most applicable thermal boundary condition in many microchannel heat exchangers. The current work aimed …

New Medium Of Advertising In The Future Use Of Interactive Installation, Hao Huang Jan 2011

New Medium Of Advertising In The Future Use Of Interactive Installation, Hao Huang

Theses

Interactive installation is good at communicating as an advertising medium because in the age of information overload, the traditional advertising medium is far from communicating with consumers efficiently, "eye catching" is no longer enough, advertising calls for effective experience communicating. Bringing experience to consumers, involving them in the process of delivering information will be effective ways of communicating and a preferred way of getting information by today's information consumers. In my thesis I will study the use of interactive installation as an advertising medium, farther more, and how we can use interactive installation to communicate with consumers better than traditional …

Addressing The Gender Gap In Federal Law Enforcement Professions: The Motivational Attraction Of Women In Computing, Maegan Stanek

Theses

Nationwide, federal law enforcement agencies seek candidates with specialized skill sets and more advanced educational knowledge for employment. In view of this, it was proven, after much open source research into federal agencies' qualification requirements, that those who possess a background in select areas, specifically computer science, have a better opportunity for employment with federal law enforcement agencies, particularly in the computing sector; although, in many cases, work experience can be substituted for a college degree [7]. For this reason, many women are not involved in, nor apply for, computing professions within federal law enforcement agencies. A significant step in …

Theses

Kosovo is passing through a dramatic transitional phase of political, economic and social development. In these circumstances decentralization has taken primacy among political and institutional developments. This capstone project addressed the problem of the implementation of the Action Plan on Decentralization in Kosovo, used by the government as a “tool”, to implement the local reform in Kosovo. The capstone project examined the main issues through the process of decentralization, including the acceptance of the decentralization by the Albanians, being the ethnic majority in Kosovo, and the impact of implementation of decentralization on the integration of Serbs.

Manual Skills, Kevin Rowland Jan 2011

Manual Skills, Kevin Rowland

Theses

The process of manual material manipulation is disappearing from daily life. Why is it that we still have an educational and social environment that does not put the same priority on practical and theoretical knowledge as is does on virtual academics? This disconnect is particularly poignant in a field such as design that should demand the mastery of both. As a modern nation, we have repressed manual skill and incremental learning by fostering an educational climate geared solely towards the desire for white-collar status. We base the accreditation of our grade schools on the rate of their college placement and …
