An Analysis Of Multimodal Sensor Fusion For Target Detection In An Urban Environment, Brian M. Flusche
An Analysis Of Multimodal Sensor Fusion For Target Detection In An Urban Environment, Brian M. Flusche
Theses
This work makes a compelling case for simulation as an attractive tool in designing cutting-edge remote sensing systems to generate the sheer volume of data required for a reasonable trade study. The generalized approach presented here allows multimodal system designers to tailor target and sensor parameters for their particular scenarios of interest via synthetic image generation tools, ensuring that resources are best allocated while sensors are still in the design phase. Additionally, sensor operators can use the customizable process showcased here to optimize image collection parameters for existing sensors. In the remote sensing community, polarimetric capabilities are often seen as …

Reading On The Internet: The Presentation Of Online News Articles And Its Relationship To Reader’S Recall And Comprehension, Kristen Curtze
Reading On The Internet: The Presentation Of Online News Articles And Its Relationship To Reader’S Recall And Comprehension, Kristen Curtze
Theses
Since 1995, the number of Internet users has increased by 1.88 billion people. As the population increased, so did the number of websites, news portals, and the amount of information presented on the Internet. Information once commonly read in a newspaper can now be found online with videos, interactive features, and other forms of multimedia. Yet, is reading a story in static, plain text different from reading a story with videos and interactivity? This study asks whether or not a relationship exists between Internet news article presentations and a reader's recall and comprehension. Forty-two participants read online news articles presented …

Discovering Inner Ear And Central Auditory System Cellular Pathways That Might Contribute To Age-Related Hearing Loss, Xiaoxi Liu
Theses
Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a prevalent communication problem among senior citizens. Previous work (Tadros et al., 2008) has revealed genes which change their expression significantly with aging and hearing loss. However, this study is limited as it mainly focuses on apoptosis-related genes. Genes that regulate biological pathways other than apoptosis might also contribute to the development of age-related hearing loss, as suggested by some studies (Tadros et al., 2007; Souza et al., 2008). In order to circumvent this limitation and to better understand the underlying mechanisms of this communication problem, a free computational tool called Gene Set Enrichment Analysis …

This project assessed the efforts made by Kosovo Institutions to fulfill their obligations under the Strategy for Reintegration of Repatriated persons and to create conditions for the reception and sustainable reintegration of involuntary repatriated persons into …
Gender Perspective In Kosovo Foreign Affairs : [Presentation Given December 15, 2010], Violeta Kurti Islami
Gender Perspective In Kosovo Foreign Affairs : [Presentation Given December 15, 2010], Violeta Kurti Islami
Theses
This paper addresses exclusion of the Kosovo women in building its foreign affairs (FA) and involvement in a newly established diplomacy. Women are not admitted to the FA in appreciable number. In decision making, executive appointments and in the foreign affairs women are few. Having chosen the male in leader decision making position is common in the Kosovo public institutions as such to the foreign affairs. Application of laws and some affirmative measures in Kosovo condition the changes of cultural values and professional preferences, which means that more women are considering participation in decision making, politics and diplomacy as naturally …
Band Space: Promoting Local Musicians On The Web, Alisha Messmer
Band Space: Promoting Local Musicians On The Web, Alisha Messmer
Theses
Local Rochester Musicians start off with limited resources to promote their music. One option would be to upload their music for free onto a website. A good example of a free website that introduces new and already familiar bands is MySpace. But sites like MySpace are not only focusing on music. MySpace has a primary focus on people interacting with other MySpace users, sharing their biography, photos, likes, dislikes etc. Amongst the users there are countless distractions that can almost drive a user away from the site. Is there another solution to promote local talent? What if a website can …
The Validity And Effectiveness Of A Business Game Beta Test, Steven Gold, Joseph Wolfe
The Validity And Effectiveness Of A Business Game Beta Test, Steven Gold, Joseph Wolfe
Articles
New gaming software must undergo a series of tests before its general release. The objective of these tests is to ensure that the simulation is appropriate for its intended audience, plays well, possesses the requisite level of fidelity to the system being modeled, and is free from programming errors. This article first catalogs the design parameters associated with a good beta test. It then compares this ideal against the beta test created for a first-generation online business game released by a major online game publisher. It then examines the actual behaviors and results produced by the study’s beta testers to …
Ethical Implications Of Social Stratification In Information Systems Research, Nicholas Berente, Uri Gal, Sean Hansen
Ethical Implications Of Social Stratification In Information Systems Research, Nicholas Berente, Uri Gal, Sean Hansen
Articles
When investigating the use of information systems within organizations, researchers inevitably make decisions relating to the classification, or ‘stratification’, of information technology users. Most commonly, users are stratified along functional boundaries or by their membership in various communities of practice. It is important to note, however, that any such method of social stratification necessarily focuses the attention of a researcher on certain issues while unavoidably downplaying or neglecting other concerns. Individuals whose interests, values or identification align with these neglected issues may be inadvertently marginalized by the research approach. This observation suggests a range of ethical concerns related to the …
The Relationship Of Integration And Automation Under An Uncertain Environment: A Sem Model, Qiang Tu, Kun Liao, Yulong Li
The Relationship Of Integration And Automation Under An Uncertain Environment: A Sem Model, Qiang Tu, Kun Liao, Yulong Li
Articles
Under a uncertain environment (i.e., growing global competition, changing customer demand, shorter product life cycles, and increasing market diversity), two manufacturing strategies often emerge: manufacturing technology automation and manufacturing system integration. Existing case studies indicate that firms should adapt manufacturing integration first and then automate the manufacturing system to improve manufacturing performance. Using 288 responses from manufacturing managers, the findings of this study empirically supports this proposition. Analytical results also show that the combination strategies of manufacturing system integration followed by manufacturing technology automation have more than twice the effect on manufacturing performance than using manufacturing automation strategy alone.
Innovation And Ngos, Stephen Luxmore, Clyde Hull
Innovation And Ngos, Stephen Luxmore, Clyde Hull
Articles
Innovations that antagonize non-governmental organizations (NGOs) will face significantly greater challenges than those that do not. The impact of non-governmental organizations on the commercialization of new technology is evolving from the more traditional indirect approach of lobbying governments. The new NGO approach is to pursue private politics, in which the NGO seeks to exert direct influence over entrepreneurial companies that commercialize radical new technology. The authors use the industry study approach to explore how this new NGO role affects innovation. They present a theoretical framework that encompasses the emerging role of NGOs and set out the practical managerial implications that …

The Leadership Quarterly: An International Journal Of Political, Social And Behavioral Science, Michael Palanski, Francis Yammarino
Articles
Although a leader's integrity seems to be essential for effective leadership, no empirical studies have examined the relationship between leader behavioral integrity (the consistency between words and actions) and follower job performance. Further, no empirical studies have examined how follower behavioral integrity might also impact job performance. Using data from three studies, we addressed these issues by testing the effects of leader and follower behavioral integrity on follower job performance. Study 1 was an online experiment in which behavioral integrity was manipulated in written scenarios; Study 2 was a field study; and Study 3 was a longitudinal lab study with …

Wireless Ad hoc Network is promising in solving many challenging real-world communication problems. Examples of these are: military field operation, emergency response system, and oil drilling and mining operation. However, the wide deployment of this type of network is still a challenging task. It is very difficult to manage quality of services for real time applications like video transmission over mobile nodes. Mobile ad hoc networks are not so resilient and reliable because of their dynamic topology due to the mobile nodes and impact of environmental circumstances. However, it provides multiple routes from the source to the destination, which gives …

Investigation Into The Perceived Image Quality Of Digital Technologies For Photofinishing, Susan Farnand, Franziska Frey, Mariela Rodriguez Adames
Books
With the shift from silver halide film to pixels, the possibilities for photofinishing have burgeoned as well. Not much more than a decade ago, photography was a process involving the recording of images on film and the printing of these images on silver halide paper. Today the majority of images are now captured digitally, and though digital silver halide certainly remains an important player in the photofinishing market, a great many images are printed at home on ink jet printers. Images are also being printed in forms other than 4 x 6 in. prints. Electrophotographic printing technology is being used …

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is the leading tool for estimating environmental effects of products and processes. Despite this wide use, LCA analysis remains problematic and limited. Within the printing industry, one of the primary problems is non-standardized assumptions and practices. This makes it difficult, if not impossible, to compare the life cycle impacts of products. This paper will compare LCA studies performed within the printing industry in order to identify common practices, limitations, areas for improvement, and opportunities for standardization. This comparison is focused on the data sources and methodologies used in the particular studies.

This research investigates the effects that font choice, typographic design, and page layout have on the conservation of ink and paper. This is one part of a broader concern with the environmental sustainability of digital printing. The particular focus of this report is on thesis guidelines for graduate students in the School of Print Media at RIT. The preparation and printing of theses is a salient area of paper and ink consumption at an institution of higher education and research. Established, well-defined thesis guidelines permit precise comparisons of the effects of different typographic factors on materials consumption. Three different aspects …

Books
Print buyers are asking printers to have their printing processes certified in order to become preferred suppliers. Comprehensive process certification is something new to printers in the US. A successful certification program requires that the certification body is independent and is technically capable, as well as a market that demands the certification. A number of printing industry influencers approached RIT in December 2008 and asked RIT to offer a process certification program to the U.S. printing industry. In 2009, a committee was formed of faculty and staff from the School of Print Media and the Printing Applications Laboratory to investigate …
