Behind The Plow, Steve Leetch
Behind The Plow, Steve Leetch
Theses
Over time the farmers barn has expanded to manage larger equipment, so too, glass art has expanded to manage a widening definition. My thesis is a comparison of values in the history of glass art and the architecture of where I grew up in northern Midwest America. The barn, like glass, has come to impact me beyond utilitarian use. They are both sources of inspiration that serve as creative sources. The barn is a symbol of the American frontier, much like glass has become a symbol of my frontier.
Measuring The Organizational Effectiveness Of Public-Private Partnerships: A Case Study Of The Department Of Energy’S Clean Cities Public-Private Partnership Program, Sarah Gerace
Theses
This thesis measures the organizational effectiveness of public-private partnerships (PPPs) by using the DOE's Clean Cities PPP program as a case study. A survey was sent to 109 Clean Cities coordinators with questions pertaining to coalition characteristics and strategies. The survey results formed the basis for the analysis of the effectiveness of the coalitions. Coalitions can have an independent or subsidiary organizational structure. Furthermore, the broad/overarching organizational structure of Clean Cities coalitions serves as an important characteristic that determines a coalition's organizational operations. In measuring the Clean Cities program in terms of organizational effectiveness, the structure of coalitions (e.g., independent …

Impact Of Technostress On End-User Satisfaction And Performance, Monideepa Tarafdar, Qiang Tu, T. Ragu-Nathan
Articles
Organizational use of information and communications technologies (ICT) is increasingly resulting in negative cognitions in individuals, such as information overload and interruptions. Recent literature has encapsulated these cognitions in the concept of technostress, which is stress caused by an inability to cope with the demands of organizational computer usage. Given the critical role of the user in organizational information processing and accomplishing application-enabled workflows, understanding how these cognitions affect users’ satisfaction with ICT and their performance in ICT-mediated tasks is an important step in appropriating benefits from current computing environments. The objective of this paper is to (1) understand the …
Small Gatherings, Sean O'Connell
Small Gatherings, Sean O'Connell
Theses
My proposed avenue of study involves a focused investigation of ornament on functional pottery. More specifically how the use of embellishment enhances utility and assists in the creation of a context for communal experiences: gatherings of a colloquial, informal, or casual nature. More specifically, this body of work explores the archetypal forms of tableware and how they manifest under the auspice of `small gatherings'. In addition to the apparent characteristics of `use' and `appearance' there are also numerous possibilities that may intersect with the ideas of utility and decoration. The content of this work is embedded in historical modes and …
Sculptural Life Forms, Jaiik Lee
Sculptural Life Forms, Jaiik Lee
Theses
The purpose of my art is to express the mystery of life. Through the shaping of material mass, I induce my work to influence space and time in an attempt to discover special meaning about the life phenomenon of all creatures from the beginning of time to their present manifestations today. The origin of life has been the subject of numerous debates including those pitting creationism against evolution and churchmen against scientists. There remain, however, discoveries and artifacts like ancient fish fossils, that connect features of our humans ancestors with other living organisms. Perhaps this is a riddle that will …
Towards Integrating Chalcogenide Based Phase Change Memory With Silicon Microelectronics, Archana Devasia
Towards Integrating Chalcogenide Based Phase Change Memory With Silicon Microelectronics, Archana Devasia
Theses
The continued dominance of floating gate technology as the premier non-volatile memory (NVM) technology is expected to hit a roadblock due to issues associated with its inability to catch up with CMOS scaling. The uncertain future of floating gate memory has led to a host of unorthodox NVM technologies to surface as potential heirs. Among the mix is phase change memory (PCM), which is a non-volatile, resistance variable, memory technology wherein the state of the memory bit is defined by the resistance of the memory material. This research study examines novel, bilayer chalcogenide based materials composed of Ge-chalcogenide (GeTe or …

Time And Space, Doroteia Johnson
Time And Space, Doroteia Johnson
Theses
Aesthetic moments created by the interaction of human beings everyday become more exciting and valuable when a simple shape takes the viewer to another place, time, or state of mind. I am interested in engaging simplified shapes in order to generate a heightened experience of movement and an acute sense of belonging within time and space. Through the use of tungsten inner gas (TIG) welding, I translated geometric forms of steel into sculptures. The eye follows lines that evoke a sense of balance in motion and boundaries. Investigation of geometric lines as a mapping element reflects memories and relationships that …
An Unnatural History, Sarah Hearn
An Unnatural History, Sarah Hearn
Theses
An Unnatural History is an installation that inhabits the space between the continuously shifting realms of science, pseudoscience and science fiction. This project documents the (fictional) discovery of a taxonomy of marine life containing and cooperating with the elements from the periodic table. As science and technology progress, we are constantly faced with redefining, reinterpreting and reconfiguring what we thought we knew about the world around us and previous scientific "facts" are revealed to have been constructed "beliefs." Using multiple modes of representation, An Unnatural History draws attention to the real, the imagined and what it means to visualize biological …

There are many diseases whose diagnosis, symptoms, and possible treatment are known but unfortunately that rare knowledge is not available to every individual in the world. This initiates all the vision behind presenting a paper on EMR/ EHR and its Data Management. The thesis reviews the concept of EMR/ EHR thus explaining its concepts, importance, market need …
Electro-Optic Adaptive Microlens, Dale Ewbank
Electro-Optic Adaptive Microlens, Dale Ewbank
Theses
The goal of the present research was to demonstrate the viability of an electro-optic adaptive microlens (EOAM) system in imaging applications requiring broadband illumination in the visible region. Previous works illustrate devices that are adaptive optics but are limited in capability. Most have been designed and optimized for a particular wavelength and many of them are polarization dependent. An adaptive optical system that will function over a broadband of visible wavelengths will be useful in many imaging applications. The tasks completed for EOAM system design and build required understanding and implementation of the imaging theory, the materials' properties, the control …
Sola In Nature, Yeonhee Choi
Sola In Nature, Yeonhee Choi
Theses
Sola in Nature is an invitation to encounter the internal human experience inspired by nature. Each photograph exhibits different sensibilities; exploring what the psychological self represents in nature through the images. The human mind is like air. We cannot smell, hold, and see the air, but we can feel it when we breathe. We cannot live without it. This thesis transcribes personal experience into a photographic spectacle that provides the public access, with which to examine the sophisticated mind as reflection of the self. Nature is, in this work, considered not only as spiritual existence but also as the psychological …

Design Of A Test Loop For Performance Testing Of Steam Turbines Under A Variety Of Operating Conditions, Jonathan Guerrette
Theses
The steam turbine is one of the most widely used energy conversion devices in the world, providing shaft power for electricity production, chemical processing, and HVAC systems. There are new opportunities in growing renewable and combined cycle applications. End-users are asking for energy efficiency improvements that require manufacturers to renew their experimentally verified design methods. A structured design approach was carried out along three integrated research thrusts. The first two thrusts, Turbine Performance Prediction and Measurement Planning, were carried out with the aim of supporting the theoretical modeling required for the third thrust, System Modeling. The primary use of the …
Scapes, Masa Bajc
Scapes, Masa Bajc
Theses
Scapes examines the experience of the oneiric landscape, conceived through the place of the artwork. Created photographs, videos and the installation are regarded as places that blend the inner space with the outer. Fukei, the Japanese concept of landscape, serves as a framework through which I explore the idea of a personal engagement with a place, and its relationships to the conceptions of space and landscape. Influenced by the philosophy of Gaston Bachelard, space is viewed as an expansion of one's intimate being. The thesis also addresses cross-disciplinary discourse on the meaning of place and its new found significance within the field …
Real-Time Data Acquisition, Transmission And Archival Framework, Piyush Agarwal
Real-Time Data Acquisition, Transmission And Archival Framework, Piyush Agarwal
Theses
Most human actions are a direct response to stimuli from their five senses. In the past few decades there has been a growing interest in capturing and storing the information that is obtained from the senses using analog and digital sensors. By storing this data it is possible to further analyze and better understand human perception. While many devices have been created for capturing and storing data, existing software and hardware architectures are aimed towards specialized devices and require expensive high-performance systems. This thesis aims to create a framework that supports capture and monitoring of a variety of sensors and …
Measurement, Modeling And Perception Of Painted Surfaces : A Multi-Scale Analysis Of The Touch-Up Problem, Suparna Kalghatgi
Measurement, Modeling And Perception Of Painted Surfaces : A Multi-Scale Analysis Of The Touch-Up Problem, Suparna Kalghatgi
Theses
Real-world surfaces typically have geometric features at a range of spatial scales. At the microscale, opaque surfaces are often characterized by bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (BRDF), which describes how a surface scatters incident light. At the mesoscale, surfaces often exhibit visible texture - stochastic or patterned arrangements of geometric features that provide visual information about surface properties such as roughness, smoothness, softness, etc. These textures also affect how light is scattered by the surface, but the effects are at a different spatial scale than those captured by the BRDF. Through this research, we investigate how microscale and mesoscale surface properties …
Analog Integrated Circuit Design In Ultra-Thin Oxide Cmos Technologies With Significant Direct Tunneling-Induced Gate Current, Eric Bohannon
Analog Integrated Circuit Design In Ultra-Thin Oxide Cmos Technologies With Significant Direct Tunneling-Induced Gate Current, Eric Bohannon
Theses
The ability to do mixed-signal IC design in a CMOS technology has been a driving force for manufacturing personal mobile electronic products such as cellular phones, digital audio players, and personal digital assistants. As CMOS has moved to ultra-thin oxide technologies, where oxide thicknesses are less than 3 nm, this type of design has been threatened by the direct tunneling of carriers though the gate oxide. This type of tunneling, which increases exponentially with decreasing oxide thickness, is a source of MOSFET gate current. Its existence invalidates the simplifying design assumption of infinite gate resistance. Its problems are typically avoided …
Compact Modeling Of Thin-Film Silicon Transistors Fabricated On Glass, Christopher Nassar
Compact Modeling Of Thin-Film Silicon Transistors Fabricated On Glass, Christopher Nassar
Theses
The semiconductor industry, now entering its seventh decade, continues to innovate and evolve at a breakneck pace. E. O. Wilson, the famous Harvard biologist who is an expert on ants, estimates that there are 1017 ants on earth. The semiconductor industry is now shipping 100 transistors per ant every year. In addition, the pace of growth means we are building more electronics in a year than existed on January 1st of that year! A major driver for this growth in recent years is the portable consumer electronics market which includes cell phones, personal digital assistants, and tablets. The focus of …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Poly(Ionic Liquids) Derived From 1-Ethyl-3-Methyl-4- Vinylimidazolium Triflate, Darren Smith
Theses
In the present research, 1-ethyl-3-methyl-4-vinylimidazolium trifluoromethane sulfonate (triflate) was synthesized and polymerized. For comparative purposes, 1-ethyl-3-vinylimidazolium triflate and its polymer was also prepared. Zwitterionic propane sulfonate derivatives of 1-methyl-5-vinylimidazole and 1-vinylimidazole were also synthesized and polymerized. Poly(1-ethyl-3-methyl-4-vinylimidazolium triflate) and poly(3-ethyl-1-vinylimidazolium triflate) were characterized by means of TGA, GPC, and DSC. The TGA showed that poly(1-ethyl-3-methyl-4-vinylimidazolium triflate) had a higher decomposition temperature range, 467-527oC, than poly(3-ethyl-1-vinylimidazolium triflate), 400-448oC. Poly(styrene) equivalent molecular weights were evaluated by GPC in DMF. Poly(1-ethyl-3-methyl-4-vinylimidazolium triflate) had a Mn = 13,000 g/mol (Mw = 14,500 g/mol, PD = 1.11) and poly(3-ethyl-1-vinylimidazolium triflate) had a Mn = 15,700 …
