Real-Time Software Electric Guitar Audio Transcription, Xander Fiss
Real-Time Software Electric Guitar Audio Transcription, Xander Fiss
Theses
Guitar audio transcription is the process of generating a human-interpretable musical score from guitar audio. The musical score is presented as guitar tablature, which indicates not only what notes are played, but where they are played on the guitar fretboard. Automatic transcription remains a challenge when dealing with polyphonic sounds. The guitar adds further ambiguity to the transcription problem because the same note can often be played in many ways. In this thesis work, a portable software architecture is presented for processing guitar audio in real time and providing a set of highly probable transcription solutions. Novel algorithms for performing …
Multiple Scale Landscape Pattern Index Interpretation For The Persistent Monitoring Of Land-Cover And Land-Use, Alvin Spivey
Multiple Scale Landscape Pattern Index Interpretation For The Persistent Monitoring Of Land-Cover And Land-Use, Alvin Spivey
Theses
Mapping land-cover land-use change (LCLUC) over regional and continental scales, and long time scales (years and decades), can be accomplished using thematically identified classification maps of a landscape--a LCLU class map. Observations of a landscape's LCLU class map pattern can indicate the most relevant process, like hydrologic or ecologic function, causing landscape scale environmental change. Quantified as Landscape Pattern Metrics (LPM), emergent landscape pat- terns act as Landscape Indicators (LI) when physically interpreted. The common mathematical approach to quantifying observed landscape scale pattern is to have LPM measure how connected a class exists within the landscape, through nonlinear local kernel …
Inventory 03 21 -06 20, Maria Casanovas
Inventory 03 21 -06 20, Maria Casanovas
Theses
This thesis explores the essential qualities that make one person different from others, particularly the characteristics of the self that determine identity through vernacular, ephemeral objects and everyday experiences. I aim to examine and formulate questions related to the role that systems, rules and authority play in the formation of that personal sense of uniqueness. Themes addressed include the relationship of the real and photographic verisimilitude and the role of the artist in the process. I investigate these issues by establishing a set of rules to create a photographic inventory of all the objects that entered and exited my apartment …
A Power Efficient Pulsed Mac Protocol For Body Area Networks, David Layerle
A Power Efficient Pulsed Mac Protocol For Body Area Networks, David Layerle
Theses
The need for a reduction in healthcare cost has escalated over the past decade. Therefore, preventive medicine through remote health monitoring and Body Area Networks has gained more attention. This paper presents a novel Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol called Pulsed-MAC or simply PMAC to efficiently manage wireless communications in Body Area Networks. PMAC drastically extends the network life time by augmenting sensor nodes with charge pumping circuitry which harvest energy from a pulsed signal used to orchestrate communications. By measuring the average radio power consumption in a sensor node over a 24 hour simulation period, results show that PMAC …

The Twelve Animals: An Interactive Guide To The Chinese Zodiac Signs, Yanzi Chen
The Twelve Animals: An Interactive Guide To The Chinese Zodiac Signs, Yanzi Chen
Theses
The Chinese Zodiac signs are determined by the lunar year in which you were born. The Chinese believe the animal ruling one's birth year has a profound influence on personality, and destiny. Unlike Western astrology, which is based on the months of the year, the Chinese Zodiac, traditionally referred to as the Sheng Xiao, is based on a twelve-year cycle with each year represented by an animal. The twelve animals are: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. The Chinese Zodiac is found in several East Asian countries besides China. My thesis is an exploration …
Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon Photonics, Karthik Narayanan
Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon Photonics, Karthik Narayanan
Theses
Silicon Photonics is quickly proving to be a suitable interconnect technology for meeting the future goals of on-chip bandwidth and low power requirements. However, it is not clear how silicon photonics will be integrated into CMOS chips, particularly microprocessors. The issue of integrating photonic circuits into electronic IC fabrication processes to achieve maximum flexibility and minimize complexity and cost is an important one. In order to maximize usage of chip real estate, it will be advantageous to integrate in three-dimensions. Hydrogenated-amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) is emerging as a promising material for the 3-D integration of silicon photonics for on-chip optical interconnects. …

Development Of Cerium Dioxide Coated Alumina Adsorbent To Study The Removal Of Arsenic From Ground Water, Laura Herder
Development Of Cerium Dioxide Coated Alumina Adsorbent To Study The Removal Of Arsenic From Ground Water, Laura Herder
Theses
Arsenic contamination of groundwater is a major problem in both developing and developed countries as it is quite dangerous at extremely low concentrations and prevalent in many water supplies. Although there are many removal techniques for arsenic, the most promising for developing countries appears to be adsorption, since it is relatively low in cost, is easy to implement, requires no electricity, and can remove trace amounts of materials from solutions. Current adsorbents that have a high affinity for arsenic, but are costly because they have slow adsorption rates, low capacities, limited pH ranges, are affected adversely by competing ions, and …

Creating Current, Jesse Harrington
Creating Current, Jesse Harrington
Theses
What if we could bring education to the masses explaining how to develop a particular product without having to mass produce the actual product? The pursuit of creating knowledge economies using power on demand as an idea worth spreading is how I have attempted to answer this question. Through identifying three styles of active learning, I designed three idea spreading mechanisms. Kinesthetic, Accommodative and Tactillian learners are all active learners, they want physical involvement with their education. These three concepts; a bicycle generator museum exhibit (accommodative), a traveling bicycle generator exhibit (kinesthetic) and a set of DIY/DIT (Do it together) …

Turing Instability In Discrete Replicator Systems, Alex Bryce
Turing Instability In Discrete Replicator Systems, Alex Bryce
Theses
When analyzing a discrete reaction-diffusion dynamical system, one primary area of interest is locating where in the parameter space Turing instabilities occur. It will be shown that Turing instabilities cannot occur in the react then diffuse equations if all diffusion coefficients are equal. The replicator dynamic is a system of equations that is used in evolutionary game theory applications to study behavior types in animal populations. Conditions for a Turing instability in first order discrete replicator systems will be discussed and illustrated with computer simulations of the results.

The Relationship Between Self-Reported Strength Of Parasocial Interaction And Perception Of World Stability, Rachel Provenzano
Theses
This study investigates parasocial relationships, uncertainty, and need for orientation. Respondents' strength of parasocial relationship was gathered using an adapted version of Auter and Palmgreen's (2000) Audience-Persona Interaction Scale. Respondents' perception of world stability was comprised of level of uncertainty and need for orientation, both measured using a scale created for the present study. Results showed a positive correlation between respondents' strength of parasocial relationship and level of uncertainty and a significant difference between respondents with high and low levels of parasocial interaction and need for orientation. However, no significant differences were found to exist between respondents with high and …

High dynamic range displays that incorporate two optically-coupled image planes have recently been developed. This dual image plane design requires that a given HDR input image be split into two complementary standard dynamic range components that drive the coupled systems, therefore there existing image splitting issue. In this research, two types of HDR display systems (hardcopy and softcopy HDR display) are constructed to facilitate the study of HDR image splitting algorithm for building HDR displays. A new HDR image splitting algorithm which incorporates iCAM06 image appearance model is proposed, seeking to create displayed HDR images that can provide better image …
Design And Synthesis Of A High-Performance, Hyper-Programmable Dsp On An Fpga, Stephen Nichols
Design And Synthesis Of A High-Performance, Hyper-Programmable Dsp On An Fpga, Stephen Nichols
Theses
In the field of high performance digital signal processing, DSPs and FPGAs provide the most flexibility. Due to the extensive customization available on FPGAs, DSP algorithm implementation on an FPGA exhibits an increased development time over programming a processor. Because of this, traditional DSPs typically yield a faster time to market than an FPGA design. However, it is often desirable to have the ASIC-like performance that is attainable through the additional customization and parallel computation available through an FPGA. This can be achieved through the class of processors known as hyper-programmable DSPs. A hyper-programmable DSP is a DSP in which …

Environmental Impact Analysis Of Alternative Pallet Management Systems, Ainoa Mazeika Bilbao
Environmental Impact Analysis Of Alternative Pallet Management Systems, Ainoa Mazeika Bilbao
Theses
Pallets, the most common unit-load platform, allow the transportation of goods in an efficient and reliable way. Every year, 700 million new pallets are manufactured and become part of the approximately 2 billion pallets that are in circulation in the U.S. The total life-cycle environmental impact of pallets depends on materials, manufacturing, handling processes, and the disposal practice (end-of-life). Plastic pallets can be lighter and might last longer but their manufacturing processes are energy intensive and could contribute significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. On the other hand, wooden pallets can be cheaper and easily repaired but present a shorter …
Scaling The Bulk-Driven Mosfet Into Deca-Nanometer Bulk Cmos Technologies, Christopher Urban
Scaling The Bulk-Driven Mosfet Into Deca-Nanometer Bulk Cmos Technologies, Christopher Urban
Theses
The International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors predicts that the nominal power supply voltage, VDD, will fall to 0.7 V by the end of the bulk CMOS era. At that time, it is expected that the long-channel threshold voltage of a MOSFET, VT0, will rise to 35.5% of VDD in order to maintain acceptable off-state leakage characteristics in digital systems. Given the recent push for system-on-a-chip integration, this increasing trend in VT0/VDD poses a serious threat to the future of analog design because it causes traditional analog circuit topologies to experience progressively problematic signal swing limitations in each new process generation. …
