Windows Credential Theft: Methods And Mitigations, Joseph Desimone
Windows Credential Theft: Methods And Mitigations, Joseph Desimone
Theses
Compromising Windows account credentials, especially in a domain environment, is a critical phase in an attack against an organization. This paper will first survey the most common tools and techniques used to uncover usernames and their plaintext credentials in standard red team procedures. These methods are compared against the new proposed method that uses low level hooking in the local security authority subsystem service to stealthily compromise plaintext credentials upon login. The latter has many advantages over pre-existing tools designed to capture credentials on Windows based computers. Finally, mitigation procedures will be examined that are designed to thwart credential theft …

Conformity assessment, a relatively new activity in the printing industry, is an attestation that specified requirements relating to a product or process have been fulfilled. Printing certification bodies assess printing conformity according to sampling, aim points, tolerances, and decision-making rules that are stipulated by printing standards. However, do we know if: sampling is too large or too small; normative requirements are too many or too few; tolerances are set too tightly or too loosely; and the pass/fail criterion is too stringent or too relaxed? Moreover, how do these factors impact the passing probability of a sample, a job, and the …
Webpage Source Based Covert Channel, Tarun Madiraju, Daryl Johnson, Bo Yuan, Peter Lutz
Webpage Source Based Covert Channel, Tarun Madiraju, Daryl Johnson, Bo Yuan, Peter Lutz
Presentations and other scholarship
Covert Channels can be used for enabling hidden communication mechanisms that can facilitate secret message transfer. This paper presents a new covert channel based on the HTML source of a webpage. The new covert channel while featuring high bandwidth also demonstrates high imperceptibility as it doesn’t involve any modifications to the source or the visibility of the webpage and is independent of timing of page requests. The availability of page source for a webpage on the Internet makes this covert channel easy to implement and effective.

Nat Denial Of Service: An Analysis Of Translation Table Behavior On Multiple Platforms, Nathan Winemiller, Bruce Hartpence, Daryl Johnson, Sumita Mishra
Presentations and other scholarship
Network Address Translation or NAT, is a technology that is used to translate internal addresses to globally routable addresses on the internet. NAT continues to be used extensively in almost every network due to the current lack of IPv4 addresses. Despite being exceptionally commonplace, this networking technique is not without its weaknesses, and can be disabled with a fairly straightforward attack. By overpopulating the translation table, the primary mechanism used to translate the internal to external addresses, an attacker can effectively deny all internal users access to the external network. This paper takes an in-depth look at how five different …
A Behavior Based Covert Channel Within Anti-Virus Updates, D. Anthony, D. Johnson, P. Lutz, B. Yuan
A Behavior Based Covert Channel Within Anti-Virus Updates, D. Anthony, D. Johnson, P. Lutz, B. Yuan
Presentations and other scholarship
This paper presents a new behavior based covert channel utilizing the database update mechanism of anti-virus software. It is highly covert due to unattended, frequent, automatic signature database update operations performed by the software. The design of the covert channel is described; its properties are discussed and demonstrated by a reference implementation. This paper uses these points to strengthen the inclusion of behavior-based covert channels within standard covert channel taxonomy.
Upnp Port Manipulation As A Covert Channel, Steven Monette, Daryl Johnson, Peter Lutz, Bo Yuan
Upnp Port Manipulation As A Covert Channel, Steven Monette, Daryl Johnson, Peter Lutz, Bo Yuan
Presentations and other scholarship
Port knocking traditionally has been a technique used from external connections to convey information to or request services from an internal private network [1]. UPnP as a standard allows for devices and services to open ports on network devices in order to enable functionality [2]. By combining these two techniques it is possible to port knock internally, opening ports for an intended viewer on an external network device. This paper proposes a covert channel using this technique to exfiltrate data or broadcast messages from a system behind a UPnP device to any Internet connected system.

Fairness For Transactional Events, Edward Amsden, Matthew Fluet
Fairness For Transactional Events, Edward Amsden, Matthew Fluet
Articles
Transactional events are a recent concurrency abstraction that combines first-class synchronous message-passing events with all-or-nothing transactions. Transactional events provide both a sequencing combinator, which permits the description of behaviors in which multiple potential synchronization actions (including communications between threads) either all occur in sequence or none of them occur, and a nondeterministic choice combinator, which permits the description of behaviors in which exactly one of a set of potential synchronization actions occurs. While prior work gave a semantics and an implementation for transactional events, it provided no guarantees about which of the many non-deterministic executions might be exhibited by a …

I plan on creating a playful body of work, which will investigate thoughts and memories of the past. Purity, childhood, and innocence will be some of the things that I consider and explore in this body of work. I will try to reawake or evoke memories of the past, but also explore ideas of lost memories and the loss of innocence that everyone goes through as they grow into adulthood. I plan to have a dichotomy of playfulness, youthful innocence, reawakening of youth, versus maturity, loss of innocence and youth, and the desire to revisit ones youth. Through exploration and …

I have also presented the variety of transformed women's lives in two types of art, sculpture and jewelry. The main concern for my thesis is to develop line work in the …
Ripple Clock Schemes For Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata Circuits, Prafull Purohit
Ripple Clock Schemes For Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata Circuits, Prafull Purohit
Theses
Quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) is an emerging technology for building digital circuits at nano-scale. It is considered as an alternative to widely used complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology because of its key features, which include low power operation, high density and high operating frequency. Unlike conventional logic circuits in which information is transferred by electrical current, QCA operates with the help of coulomb interaction between two adjacent QCA cells. A QCA cell is a set of four quantum-dots that are placed near the corners of a square. Due to the fact that clocking provides power and control of data …
Determination Of Chromaticness Difference Tolerance Of Offset Printing By Means Of Simulation, Jing Sheng
Determination Of Chromaticness Difference Tolerance Of Offset Printing By Means Of Simulation, Jing Sheng
Theses
Printing quality can be defined as conformance to specifications. ISO
12647-2 (2004), the standard for offset lithographic printing, specifies solid, TVI and mid-tone spread as conformance metrics. The revision of ISO 12647-2 (2010) embraces ΔCh as a new metric for grey reproduction assessment. In order to complete the revision, both the test method and the tolerance must be specified. In his presentation at TC130 in April 2011, Chung proposed a "three triplets' method as input to the grey reproduction assessment. He also proposed the use of G7 pass/fail criteria as the criteria to determine the tolerance in terms of ΔCh. …

An Evaluation Of The Application Of Partial Evaluation On Color Lookup Table Implementations, Jordan Hibbits
An Evaluation Of The Application Of Partial Evaluation On Color Lookup Table Implementations, Jordan Hibbits
Theses
A number of SRAM-based field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) allow for partial reconfiguration, allowing a part of the device to be reconfigured while the rest of the device continues operating. Partial evaluation, or instance-specific design, allows a design to be optimized to a specific set of inputs. When combined with partial reconfiguration, the reconfigurable module can be reinstantiated based on the inputs to be processed and improve the performance of the design. This thesis explores the effects, particularly the performance vs flexibility tradeoff, of using partial evaluation on the color look-up tables (CLUTs) of a color-space conversion module implemented on an …

The Blanket: Play For Social And Creative Development, Monica Zagarra
Theses
Seeing that many educational toys available today are focusing too much on the toy itself and not the play possibilities it generates, this thesis attempts to put the importance back on the activity of play. It proposes to bring play back to the basics by focusing mainly on face to face interactions. This thesis discusses toys or playthings that help develop creative and social skills in children through parent-child oriented play. This is done through the encouragement of pretend play and storytelling as the basic activities.

Synthesis Of A Difluorometric Cross-Membrane Molecular Probe For Studying Amphipathic Systems, Danielle Raymond
Synthesis Of A Difluorometric Cross-Membrane Molecular Probe For Studying Amphipathic Systems, Danielle Raymond
Theses
A surfactant is an amphiphile which consists of a hydrophobic and hydrophilic end. In nonpolar solvents containing a small amount of water surfactants can form reverse micelles. Extensive research has been done using fluorescent probes to study several properties of these amphiphilic aggregates including mechanism of formation, critical micelle concentration, aggregate number and size, nanopolarity, and viscosity. Dr. Langner's group at RIT proposed the structure of a difluorometric, ratiometric probe that can transverse the membrane of a reverse micelle created in a system of decane/water/AOT/butyl alcohol. This probe has a dansyl and a coumarin portion making it amphiphilic and could …
Deep Learning Using Genetic Algorithms, Joshua Lamos-Sweeney
Deep Learning Using Genetic Algorithms, Joshua Lamos-Sweeney
Theses
Deep Learning networks are a new type of neural network that discovers important object features. These networks determine features without supervision, and are adept at learning high level abstractions about their data sets. These networks are useful for a variety of tasks, but are difficult to train. This difficulty is compounded when multiple networks are trained in a layered fashion, which results in increased solution complexity as well as increased training time. This paper examines the use of Genetic Algorithms as a training mechanism for Deep Learning networks, with emphasis on training networks with a large number of layers, each …

The actions of Malware are often controlled through uniform communications mechanisms, which are regularly changing to evade detection techniques and remain prolific. Though geographically dispersed, malware-infected nodes being controlled for a common purpose can be viewed as a logically joint network, now loosely referred to as a botnet. The evolution of the mechanisms or processes for controlling the networks of malware-infected nodes may be indicative of their sophistication relative to a point of inception or discovery (if inception time is unknown). A sampling of botnet related malware at different points of inception or discovery can provide accurate representations of the …
The Impact Of Polarization On The Performance Of All-Optical Flip-Flops, Claudio Ippolito
The Impact Of Polarization On The Performance Of All-Optical Flip-Flops, Claudio Ippolito
Theses
This thesis experimentally characterizes the polarization dependence of an all-optical flip-flop (AOFF) based on a resonant-type semiconductor optical amplifier. Previous demonstrations of such an optical-memory device have exhibited poor on-off contrasts of around 3 dB (2:1). Our work maps out the dependence of the bistable hysteresis on the injected polarization state for the first time and clearly shows how to optimize the on-off contrast to achieve 8 dB. Beyond this optimization technique, it also demonstrate a novel technique to achieve and on-off contrast exceeding 30 dB (1000:1).
