An Integrated Physics-Based Approach To Demonstrate The Potential Of The Landsat Data Continuity Mission (Ldcm) For Monitoring Coastal/Inland Waters, Nima Pahlevan
Theses
Monitoring coastal or inland waters, recognized as case II waters, using the existing Landsat technology is somewhat restricted because of its low Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR) as well as its relatively poor radiometric resolution. As a primary task, we introduce a novel technique, which integrates the Landsat-7 data as a surrogate for LDCM with a 3D hydrodynamic model to monitor the dynamics of coastal waters near river discharges as well as in a small lake environment. The proposed approach leverages both the thermal and the reflective Landsat-7 imagery to calibrate the model and to retrieve the concentrations of optically active components …

Improving Security And Usability Of Mobile Device Authentication Mechanisms, Michael Pinch
Improving Security And Usability Of Mobile Device Authentication Mechanisms, Michael Pinch
Theses
Mobile devices, in the form of smartphones and tablet computers, are going through an amazing growth cycle. The devices are powerful and robust enough to house an incredible amount of sensitive data about our personal and business lives. These devices, however, have relatively weak authentication systems, generally consisting of a pin number or pattern matching challenge. In addition to the weak authentication systems, the input mechanism of using a finger on a touchscreen leaves a residue trail that can be easily recovered, allowing an attacker to recover some or all of the authentication code. This thesis examines the strengths and …
Low Power Context Adaptive Variable Length Encoder In H.264, Soumya Lingupanda
Low Power Context Adaptive Variable Length Encoder In H.264, Soumya Lingupanda
Theses
The adoption of digital TV, DVD video and Internet streaming led to the development of Video compression. H.264/AVC is the industry standard delivering highly efficient and reliable video compression. In this Video compression standard, H.264/AVC one of the technical developments adopted is the Context adaptive entropy coding schemes. This thesis developed a complete VHDL behavioral model of a variable length encoder. A synthesizable hardware description is then developed for components of the variable length encoder using Synopsys tools. Many implementations were focused on density and speed to reduce the hardware cost and improve quality but with higher power consumption. Low …
Design, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Solar Cells For High Temperature And High Radiation Space Applications, Zachary Bittner
Design, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Solar Cells For High Temperature And High Radiation Space Applications, Zachary Bittner
Theses
In this work, novel III-V photovoltaic (PV) materials and device structures are investi- gated for space applications, specifically for tolerance to thermal effects and ionizing radia- tion effects. The first focus is on high temperature performance of GaP solar cells and on performance enhancement through the incorporation of InGaP/GaP quantum well structures. Temperature dependent performance of GaP solar cells is modeled and compared to a modeled temperature dependence of GaAs. The temperature model showed that a GaP cell should have a normalized efficiency temperature coefficient of -1.31 *10⁻³°C⁻¹, while a standard GaAs cell should have a normalized temperature coefficient of …

In art, there is potential to turn the passive into an active. Task: Take the compass. Use it and draw a circle on graph paper. Fold the graph paper in half. Unfold. In this action, symmetry establishes a drawn circle. In the circle there is a center. To acknowledge the center a drawn periphery of this determined circle, acts as the container for a located center. The larger a diameter is scored, the more dissolved a center will be represented. To concentrate in articulation for the current sculptural research, a determined idea roots in communication. Through acknowledgement of a centralized …

In our current economic state, instant gratification from the satisfaction by the real time products and services and experiences are in demand for consumers. As a result, there are several if not many of these real-time base services that have arisen from what the consumers' desire. During the research, I have witnessed the phenomenon that would fit the criteria. The perfect example would be the popularity of meals on wheels in the United States. Setting a new trend in the fast food market, the food truck industry has reached the numbers well over the thousands and still counting with their …

Contemporary technological developments allow for greater manipulation of the natural world than ever before. While the increasing variety of synthetic materials, techniques, and equipment employed in horticulture and urban development are reshaping the land, sophisticated digital imaging tools, ranging from computer-generated graphics to 3D modeling and rendering software, are changing the way we design and represent landscapes. Through technology, we are continually imitating, reconstructing, and perfecting the natural environment. As a result, the physical and conceptual borders between the organic and synthetic elements, the "born" and the "made," in our physical environments are becoming progressively obscured, as are the lines …
A Feasibility Assessment Of A New Navigation System For Unmanned Underwater Vehicles With Adaptive Gain Sliding Mode Differentiation, Steven Szklany
A Feasibility Assessment Of A New Navigation System For Unmanned Underwater Vehicles With Adaptive Gain Sliding Mode Differentiation, Steven Szklany
Theses
In this work, a highly accurate navigation device is proposed for unmanned underwater vehicle navigation. A six degree of freedom, open loop underwater vehicle model is generated and is used as the motion platform in this study. The new navigation system, previously developed at the Rochester Institute of Technology, requires real-time body angular acceleration terms as inputs to the algorithm. To address this requirement, real-time signal differentiation techniques were investigated. The differentiation of real-world, noisy signals is a difficult task due to the inherent numerical differentiation and subsequent noise amplification. A sliding mode differentiation scheme is proposed with a fuzzy …
Schedulability-Driven Scratchpad Memory Swapping For Resource-Constrained Real-Time Embedded Systems, Michael De Francis
Schedulability-Driven Scratchpad Memory Swapping For Resource-Constrained Real-Time Embedded Systems, Michael De Francis
Theses
In resource-constrained real-time embedded systems, scratchpad memory (SPM) is utilized in place of cache to increase performance and enforce consistent behavior of both hard and soft real-time tasks via software-controlled SPM management techniques (SPMMTs). Real-time systems depend on time critical (hard) tasks to complete execution before their deadline times. Many real-time systems also depend on the execution of soft tasks that do not have to complete by hard deadlines. This thesis evaluates a new SPMMT that increases both worst-case task slack time (TST) and soft task processing capabilities, by combining two existing SPMMTs. The schedulability-driven ACETRB / WCETRB swapping (SDAWS) …
The Development Of Resistance To Antibiotics From Bacteria Exposed To Triclosan And Triclocarban In Lake Ontario, Daniel Boone
The Development Of Resistance To Antibiotics From Bacteria Exposed To Triclosan And Triclocarban In Lake Ontario, Daniel Boone
Theses
Triclocarban (3,4,4'-trichlorocarbanilide) (TCC) and Triclosan ( 2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxydiphenyl ether) (TCS) are antimicrobials used extensively in soaps and detergents. They're known to bypass wastewater treatment plants and bioaccumulate in aquatic sediments. Their accumulation leads to an increase in bacterial exposure, which may lead to both antiseptic and antibiotic resistance, known as cross-resistance. This study investigates the occurrence of cross-resistance with bacteria exposed to TCS and TCC in Lake Ontario sediments. Sediment samples were chosen at various sites with a high probability of TCS and TCC exposure. The bacteria were enriched with 5mg/L TCS (equivalent to environmental concentrations) and the top biodegraders were …

I am kind of worried when I set about writing this paper, since there are too much things to select in this process to talk about and share with you. Filmmaking process is amazing and exciting like magic, and everything needs to be created from nothing like a dove suddenly appears on illusionist's hand. However behind this glaring magic, so many people work deliberately and so many wonderful stories are going on, which are even more dramatic than our film itself. So I even have more enthusiasm to share our story than the story in the film. I want to …

We live in a digital age where information on foreign cultures is no longer hard to come by. Designers can easily access any foreign religious symbols and mythical stories by simply searching the internet and then interpret in their own way without consideration as to their original meanings. With this convenience, however, information from the internet is sometimes misconstrued after several interpretations, or it simply may not be correct. As a result foreign cultural elements may seem misplaced or ridiculous to audiences who are familiar with the culture. As a 3D designer from Asian culture, I often sense these misappropriations …

Life Cycle Assessment In The Print Industry: A Critical Review, Justin Bousquin, Eni Gambeta, Marcos Esterman
Life Cycle Assessment In The Print Industry: A Critical Review, Justin Bousquin, Eni Gambeta, Marcos Esterman
Articles
This article compares life cycle assessment studies performed on imaging equipment for the consumer market in order to identify common practices, limitations, areas for improvement, and opportunities for standardization. The analysis suggests that comparisons across studies are significantly hampered by variability in scope, transparency, data sources, and assumptions; it identifies sources of discrepancy and variability. Of particular concern to printing devices was the definition of a functional unit, which can vary significantly depending on the capabilities and use patterns of a printer. Standardization of the functional unit and related assumptions has a high potential to increase quantitative comparability across studies. …
