Predicting The Chloride Penetration Of Sustainable Marine Concrete Using Data-Driven And Multiphysics Frameworks, Joya Rani Das, Taihao Han, Jie Huang, Kamal H. Khayat, Aditya Kumar

C3 Symposium 2025

Chloride penetration in sustainable reinforced concrete (RC) is a critical parameter for predicting and preventing infrastructure failure, particularly for marine applications. However, replicating natural environments and testing in actual infrastructure is challenging, making it difficult to accurately measure chloride concentration in RC. Additionally, the complexity of concrete mixture designs and environmental parameters hinders the development of a universal model to predict chloride concentration at various concrete depths. This study develops a data-driven approach to predict chloride concentrations at different depths and chloride diffusion coefficients in marine RC made with common supplementary cementitious materials (e.g. fly ash, slag, etc.) under varied …

Harnessing Waste Cellulose Fibers For Developing Highly Resilient And Durable Cementitious Composites, Mohammad Jaberizadeh, Panagiotis Danoglidis, Surendra P. Shah, Maria Konsta-Gdoutos

C3 Symposium 2025

The construction industry continually seeks innovative materials to improve the performance and durability of cementitious composites. Waste cellulose fibers (WCF) derived from agricultural residues present an advanced underutilized source for reinforcing cementitious materials. These fibers exhibit exceptional properties, including high tensile strength and a remarkable water retention capacity (~10x their weight). Our research on WCF derived from wheat straw demonstrates their ability to mitigate autogenous shrinkage by up to 75% during early hydration and significantly improve mechanical properties at early ages. However, the long-term performance of WCF in cementitious matrices is affected by the harsh alkaline environment, which can cause …

Enhancing The Post-Crack Tensile Strain Capacity Of Metakaolin- Portland Limestone Cement Blend By Using Carbon Nanotubes, Rohitashva K. Singh, Panagiotis A. Danoglidis, Maria S. Konsta-Gdoutos

C3 Symposium 2025

Incorporating metakaolin (MK) into cementitious materials is known to enhance strength and stiffness, however, this yields a relatively brittle material with a significant loss of the ultimate strain capacity. To compensate for the loss in ductility, well-dispersed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are incorporated in MK-Portland Limestone Cement (PLC) mortar to reinforce the Interfacial Transition Zone (ITZ) which is crucial for controlling the crack formation and propagation. Nanoscale imaging and mechanical property mapping at the ITZ between the nanomodified MK-PLC matrix and aggregates revealed that the local nanostructure and morphology of the ITZ were modified, resulting in an increase in the modulus …

Towards Carbon-Neutrality In Concrete: The Role Of Biochar In Air-Entrained And Non-Air-Entrained Systems As Sand Replacement, Mahdi Mirabrishami, Farshad Rajabipour

C3 Symposium 2025

Biochar is a carbon-rich solid residue resulting from the pyrolysis or devolatilization of waste biomass (e.g., wood chips, sawdust, grass) at elevated temperatures in an oxygen-limited furnace. Biochar provides an effective pathway for atmospheric CO2 removal via photosynthesis in biomass, which is subsequently converted to biochar while also producing energy. Due to its carbon-negative footprint (-2.4 to -2.9 kg CO2eq/ kg biochar), biochar could be used to reduce or eliminate the net CO2 emission of concrete. This study aims to produce low-carbon to carbon-negative concrete mixtures by utilizing biochar as a partial to total replacement of natural sand while leveraging …

The size effect phenomenon, stemming from the inherent fracture characteristics of materials, is notably widespread in concrete. Traditional approaches to investigate this effect and concrete fracture behaviors are typically laborious. To address these issues, this study employs a machine learning (ML) methodology (e.g., light gradient boosting machine (LGBoost) and categorical boosting (CatBoost)). The findings indicate that these models deliver high accuracy in predicting the nominal flexural strength of concrete, reaching R² values of 0.933 and 0.929, respectively, for testing the models. Additionally, SHapley additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis was used to differentiate the influence of material and geometric parameters on the …

Rebel Sensor For Real-Time Concrete Strength: Eliminating Calibration And Reducing Carbon Footprint, Rui He, Zhihao Kong, Joe Turek, Na (Luna) Lu

C3 Symposium 2025

Concrete strength is a key factor influencing construction quality, cost, schedule, and durability. However, current testing methods—such as cylinder and beam breaks—are time-consuming, costly, and carbon-intensive, often delaying construction and generating unnecessary waste. Existing maturity methods (e.g., ASTM C1074) also require pre-established, mix-specific curves that take weeks and thousands of dollars to develop. To address these challenges, we developed the REBEL Sensor—an IoT-enabled technology that enables direct, real-time, and wireless monitoring of in-place concrete strength without the need for pre-determined calibration curves. By accurately predicting final strength at 28 or 56 days from the initial mix, our sensor empowers engineers to …
