Mapping Out Chinese Modernity And Alternative Modernity, Song Li
Mapping Out Chinese Modernity And Alternative Modernity, Song Li
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article, “Mapping Out Chinese Modernity and Alternative Modernity,” Song Li reviews the writings of Kang Liu, particularly his Aesthetics and Marxism. Kang Liu studies the intellectual trajectory of Chinese Marxism from its inception to its post-Mao phases of transformation by comparing it with the cultural and aesthetic thinking of Western Marxism. It provides not only a new perspective for the study of Marxism in general and Chinese Marxism in particular, but also opens up a new space for mapping out Chinese modernity and alternative modernity. Its 2012 Chinese translation makes it more accessible in China, and it will …
Traveling Theory: Fredric Jameson’S Interpretations Of The Cultural Revolution And Maoism, Xian Wang
Traveling Theory: Fredric Jameson’S Interpretations Of The Cultural Revolution And Maoism, Xian Wang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article, "Traveling Theory: Fredric Jameson’s Interpretations of the Cultural Revolution and Maoism," Xian Wang discusses how Fredric Jameson transformed or “transcoded” the Chinese Cultural Revolution into his notion of cultural revolution, regarding it as a radical means to achieve decolonization and national liberation. The Chinese Cultural Revolution therefore became a model for cultural revolution in different parts of the world, and an alternative vision of modernity. Jameson also associates Maoism and the Cultural Revolution with Antonio Gramsci’s concept of subalternity, and considers cultural revolution as an ideological revolution for the oppressed classes. Taking Maoism as a traveling theory, …
The “Althusser-Mao” Problematic And The Reconstruction Of Historical Materialism: Maoism, China And Althusser On Ideology, Fang Yan
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article “The ‘Althusser-Mao’ Problematic and the Reconstruction of Historical Materialism: Maoism, China and Althusser on Ideology,” Fang Yan analyses the “Althusser-Mao” problematic which was first brought up by Liu Kang, outlining how Mao’s ideas contributed to the formation of Althusser’s theory of ideology. The paper is divided into three parts: first, how Mao influenced Althusser’s propositions of the primacy of relations of production and reciprocal action of the superstructure; secondly, how Mao influenced Althusser’s notions of ideological practice, Ideological State Apparatuses and ideological class struggle; and finally, how Althusser drew on Mao in the formation of the concept …

From The "Other" To The "Master Narrative": The Chinese Journey Of The Frankfurt School, Guohua Zhu, Xiangchun Meng
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article, "From the 'Other' to the 'Master Narrative': The Chinese Journey of the Frankfurt School," Guohua Zhu and Xiangchun Meng discuss the Chinese reception of Frankfurt School and the Maoist historical context. Chinese scholars take the narrow view of the Frankfurt School theories as a depoliticized instrument to explain Chinese practice, particularly in the realm of mass culture. Furthermore, the Frankfurt School has encountered the powerful political and ideological legacy of Maoism, which not only dictates instrumentalist view, but also predisposes to a nationalistic attitude that pits Chinese exceptionalism against universalism, including the Frankfurt School and other western …

Introduction: Rethinking Critical Theory And Maoism, Kang Liu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article, "Rethinking Critical Theory and Maoism," Kang Liu reviews the existing literature in English on the relationship of Critical Theory and Maoism and discusses the need to explore and reconstruct a genealogy of Critical Theory and Maoism within the global context of political, ideological, and intellectual currents and trends. The special issue will focus on three clusters of issues: first, the western invention of Maoism as a universal theory of revolution; second, the reception of Critical Theory in China and its relationship to Maoism; and third, the relevance of Maoism and Critical Theory today. Liu raises the question …
Maoism In Culture: A “Glocalized” Or “Sinicized” Marxist Literary Theory, Ning Wang
Maoism In Culture: A “Glocalized” Or “Sinicized” Marxist Literary Theory, Ning Wang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his essay "Maoism in Culture," Ning Wang discusses the importance to literature and art of Mao's famous "Yan'an Talks" as one of his most representative works. Maoism, or Mao Zedong Thought as is generally called in China, is a "glocalized" or "Sinicized" Marxism initiated and developed by Mao and his comrades in arms and successors in China. Wang argues that although Maoism is not a dogmatically "imported" Marxism from the West, it has indeed grasped some fundamental Marxist principles in combination with the concrete Chinese literary and critical practice. Thus a "glocalized" or "Sinicized" Marxist literary theory has contributed …
The Political (Un)Conscious: Rethinking Aesthetics From A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Xiaohong Zhang
The Political (Un)Conscious: Rethinking Aesthetics From A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Xiaohong Zhang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article, "The Political (Un)conscious: Rethinking Aesthetics from a Cross-Cultural Perspective," Xiaohong Zhang adopts a cross-cultural perspective, examining the cultural-specific nuances of critical terms like race, class and gender, all of which have bearings on our perception and conception of aesthetics. Drawing on Emory Elliot's groundbreaking book, Aesthetics in a Multicultural Age (2002), the paper probes into the aesthetic experience whose primary effect is to depragmatize. Along this line of thinking, the author draws attention to the aesthetic impetus of two Nobel laureates, Mo Yan and Gao Xingjian, whose rewriting of Western classics demonstrates Chinese authors' shared predilection for …

Conflicting Neo-Colonialist Narratives In The Representation Of Africa In Ngugi And Naipaul's Novels, Weiping Li, Xiuli Zhang
Conflicting Neo-Colonialist Narratives In The Representation Of Africa In Ngugi And Naipaul's Novels, Weiping Li, Xiuli Zhang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "Conflicting Neo-colonialist Narratives in the Representation of Africa in Ngugi and Naipaul's Novels" Weiping Li and Xiuli Zhang analyze the conflicting neo-colonialist narratives by comparing the different representations of the post-independent Africa between Ngugi's Petals of Blood and Naipaul's A Bend in the River. The multiple narrators in Petals of Blood expose imperialists' continuing domination of Africa, while the limited third person narrator in A Bend in the River blames the African people for the deterioration and chaos of the African society. One from an insider's perspective, the other from the outsider's, Ngugi and Naipaul thus form …
Evaluating Alternative Options For Managing Nitrogen Losses From Corn Production, Jing Liu, Thomas W. Hertel, Laura Bowling, Sadia Jame, Christopher Kucharik, Navin Ramankutty
Evaluating Alternative Options For Managing Nitrogen Losses From Corn Production, Jing Liu, Thomas W. Hertel, Laura Bowling, Sadia Jame, Christopher Kucharik, Navin Ramankutty
Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs
This brief focuses specifically on agriculture in the Midwest where excess nitrogen presents a significant challenge for water quality – both locally and in the Gulf of Mexico. While the Gulf Hypoxia Task Force has called for a 45% reduction in watershed nitrate loading across the Corn Belt, our business as usual mid-century projections show this rate rising, rather than falling. Therefore, this brief explores policies aimed at reducing nitrogen losses from farms in the region. These include (among others) adoption of best management practices, drainage management, wetland restoration, cap and trade policies and modification to the biofuel mandates. We …
Productivity Growth Is Key To Achieving Long Run Agricultural Sustainability, Uris L.C. Baldos, Thomas W. Hertel
Productivity Growth Is Key To Achieving Long Run Agricultural Sustainability, Uris L.C. Baldos, Thomas W. Hertel
Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs
We explore, in-depth, the role of public spending on agricultural Research and Development (R&D) and linkages to on-farm productivity, resource use, environmental quality and competitiveness of U.S. agriculture. Productivity growth in U.S. agriculture since the 1950’s has permitted total output to grow rapidly with very limited growth in farm inputs. However, this growth has been closely tied to public and private investments in R&D. And the payoff from public R&D takes decades to be fully realized. Therefore, it is the investments being made today that will determine the sustainability and competitiveness of U.S. agriculture at mid-century. In this Policy Brief, …

Global Drivers Of Land And Water Sustainability Stresses At Mid-Century, Iman Haqiqi, Laura Bowling, Sadia Jame, Thomas W. Hertel, Uris Baldos, Jing Liu
Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs
We quantify the local stresses related to land, water and nitrate leaching (spatially resolved at ~10km x 10km cells) across the continental U.S. arising from expansion and intensification of agriculture between the present and 2050. The stresses are decomposed into those due to population and income growth, climate change, biofuel demands and productivity improvements – both in the U.S. and abroad. We also highlight how these local stresses depend on local climate, soils, nitrogen applications and irrigation practices and identify the tradeoffs associated with achieving individual sustainability objectives. For example, restricting irrigation expansion puts added pressure on non-irrigated cropland expansion …

Weight Minimization Of Automotive Sound Packages In The Presence Of Air Leaks, Hyunjun Shin, J Stuart Bolton
Weight Minimization Of Automotive Sound Packages In The Presence Of Air Leaks, Hyunjun Shin, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
In previous work, a sound package consisting of a layer of limp, fibrous material and a flexible microperforated panel was considered. It was found that a weight optimization process for their treatment gave many different flow resistivity and surface density combinations that yielded the same spaceaveraged interior pressures downstream of the sound package. Thus, from the optimization results, it was possible to identify a potential weight reduction range. Generally, it was found that a combination of a relatively heavy, high flow resistance MPP with a relatively light fibrous layer gave the lowest weight solutions at a given space-average pressure (SAP) …
A Comparison Between Glass Fibers And Polymeric Fibers When Serving As A Structural Damping Medium For Fuselage-Like Structures, Yutong Xue, J Stuart Bolton, Thomas Herdtle, Seungkyu Lee, Ronald W. Gerdes
A Comparison Between Glass Fibers And Polymeric Fibers When Serving As A Structural Damping Medium For Fuselage-Like Structures, Yutong Xue, J Stuart Bolton, Thomas Herdtle, Seungkyu Lee, Ronald W. Gerdes
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
In previous studies, theories have been developed and simulations performed to show that properly designed fibrous media can be very effective at reducing structural vibration as well as absorbing airborne sound. Therefore, the potential range of noise control applications for fibrous media such as glass and polymeric fiber has been broadened due to this multi-functionality. Since the acoustical, sound absorption properties of these two kinds of fibers are well-known, the current study focused on a comparison of their damping performance when they are used as layered dampers for a fuselage-like structure: i.e., a panel with frames. A layer of …
Sound Quality Evaluation Of Residential Hvac&R Equipment, Weonchan Sung, Patricia Davies, J. Stuart Bolton
Sound Quality Evaluation Of Residential Hvac&R Equipment, Weonchan Sung, Patricia Davies, J. Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
HVAC and Refrigeration (HVAC&R) equipment designers would benefit if there were better noise criteria for optimization of noise control treatments. Development of a model that can predict the average annoyance ratings of residential HVAC&R equipment sound is described. Three sets of subjective tests were performed, and the results from part of the third test are described. Three rating exercises were designed for the 60 subjects who participated. In each of the three parts the 50 sounds were a mixture of recordings and recordings that were digitally modified to decrease the correlation between sound metrics. In Part A the sounds tended …
Noise Source Identification In An Under-Determined System By Convex Optimization, Tongyang Shi, Yangfan Liu, J Stuart Bolton
Noise Source Identification In An Under-Determined System By Convex Optimization, Tongyang Shi, Yangfan Liu, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Previously, it was shown that the iterative optimization procedure Wideband Acoustical Holography (WBH) can efficiently identify noise sources in under-determined systems: i.e., when the number of measurements is less than the number of equivalent source parameters that need to be determined. However, experience suggests that the WBH method also has its limitations. First, when sound sources are closely spaced, WBH has difficulty in separating them, especially at low frequencies. Secondly the solution obtained from WBH is often highly localized: that is, the WBH solution develops around the strongest source, thus tending to under-estimate the level of nearby weaker sources. To …

Truncated Singular Value Decomposition Method For Mitigating Unwanted Enhancement In Active Noise Control Systems, Xuchen Wang, Yangfan Liu, J. Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
It is well-known that good noise cancellation performance can only be realized by a multiple-input active noise control system when the primary noise sources are persistently exciting, and the reference signals are uncorrelated. Otherwise, the noise reduction performance will deteriorate and, quite possibly, the noise can be enhanced. In particular, when the reference signals are correlated in a certain frequency band, enhancement can occur in that band. In the present work, singular value decomposition was applied to the auto-correlation matrix of the reference signals to analyze this enhancement issue. It was found that the level of enhancement was associated with …

Four-Microphone Measurement Of Transmission Loss Of Automotive Door Seals: Improved Correction Factor, Weimin Thor, Zhuang Mo, J Stuart Bolton
Four-Microphone Measurement Of Transmission Loss Of Automotive Door Seals: Improved Correction Factor, Weimin Thor, Zhuang Mo, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Recently, a desktop procedure for measuring the transmission loss of automotive door seals was proposed. In that procedure, a door seal is placed in a square-section, four-microphone standing wave tube, and is held between a movable clamp and the opposite tube wall. Since the clamp partially blocks the tube cross-section, it is necessary to correct the measured transmission loss to obtain the transmission loss of the seal alone. Initially, the correction factor was determined by measuring transmission losses of samples having known properties, and that were clamped in the tube in the same way as the seals. It would be …
Safety Ramifications Of A Change In Pedestrian Crosswalk Law: A Case Study Of Oregon, Usa, Yue Ke, Konstantina Gkritza
Safety Ramifications Of A Change In Pedestrian Crosswalk Law: A Case Study Of Oregon, Usa, Yue Ke, Konstantina Gkritza
Lyles School of Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
Pedestrians are some of the most vulnerable road users as they are not protected by safety devices, and must also share the road with vehicles traveling at dangerous speeds, particularly during road crossings. In 2011, the state of Oregon changed their traffic laws to be more accommodating to pedestrians by giving right of way to pedestrians using a crosswalk, regardless if whether the crosswalk is marked or unmarked. This paper estimates a panel logit model to evaluate the efficacy of the law in preventing pedestrian fatalities. Pedestrian fatalities are shown to decrease over time, with smaller likelihood of a fatality …

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Several studies have examined passengers’ trust in human-operated systems versus autonomous systems. Prior studies have also reported cultural differences among individuals from India and the United States. The purpose of this study was to investigate how nationality, weather, wind, and distance affect passengers’ willingness to fly in autonomous aircraft. Participants included 161 volunteers from the United States and 137 volunteers from India. In 12 different conditions, participants were asked to rate their willingness to fly in an autonomous aircraft, given information about the weather (sunny, raining, or snowing), the wind level (no wind versus strong wind), and the flight distance …
Tire Cavity Induced Structure-Borne Noise Study With Experimental Verification, Rui Cao, J Stuart Bolton
Tire Cavity Induced Structure-Borne Noise Study With Experimental Verification, Rui Cao, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Structure-borne road noise is an important factor affecting passengers’ overall riding experience. It is well-known that the fundamental acoustic resonance of the tire cavity can generate net forces on the rim, usually in the vicinity of 200 Hz. This effect can be reduced by placing sound absorbing material within the tire cavity. However, modifying the design of the tire and suspension system to decrease the cavity noise influence without the need for adding sound absorbing material would clearly be beneficial in terms of decreased cost and complexity. Previous finite element simulations have shown that tires in which even treadband circumferential …
A Study Of The Frequency And Shape Dependency Of Acoustic Radiation Modes, Jiawei Liu, Yangfan Liu, J Stuart Bolton
A Study Of The Frequency And Shape Dependency Of Acoustic Radiation Modes, Jiawei Liu, Yangfan Liu, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Acoustic radiation modes (ARMs) are a set of orthogonal velocity distributions which radiate sound power independently. Because of this characteristic, ARMs have been successfully used in active structural acoustics control. More recently, ARMs have been used to guide structural modification targeting sound power reduction and have also been used as basis functions in acoustical holography. However, it is usually a time-consuming process to compute the ARMs of a radiating structure since they are frequency dependent. This characteristic often limits the use of ARMs in the applications mentioned above. Here, the possibility of obtaining a set of ARMs that vary slowly …

Bree's Diagram Of A Functionally Graded Thick-Walled Cylinder Under Thermo-Mechanical Loading Considering Nonlinear Kinematic Hardening, Mohsen Damadam, Reza Moheimani, Hamid Dalir
School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
n this paper, elasto-plastic analysis of a thick-walled cylinder made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) subjected to constant internal pressure and cyclic temperature gradient loading is carried out using MATLAB. The material is assumed to be isotropic and independent of tem- perature with constant Poisson's ratio and the material properties vary radially based on a power law volume function relation. The Von Mises’ yield criterion and the Armstrong-Frederick non- linear kinematic hardening model were implemented in this investigation. To obtain the incre- mental plastic strain, return mapping algorithm (RMA) was used. At the end, the Bree's inter- action diagram is …

Learning Environment Transformation: Connecting Accreditation And Facilities, Emily A. Mclaughlin, Mary Ann Frank
ASEE IL-IN Section Conference
A primary objective of any credible academic program is to maintain learning environments and facilities that meet the approval of our accreditation bodies. In recent times, an increased emphasis on providing spaces that enrich collaboration and amplify opportunities for productivity has been witnessed. A student’s ability to absorb information and work in partnership with each other is greatly affected by the built environment. This includes such influences as the available classroom technology as well as the furniture and other equipment being used within the learning space. A well-designed instructional environment can also enhance camaraderie between scholars and aid in recruitment …

A Redesigned Engagement And Recruitment Strategy Forengineering Technology Programs At A Regional Campus, James D. Burns, Randall J. Budreau, Gene L. Harding, William M. Pace, Megan E. Prygoski, John A. Piller
ASEE IL-IN Section Conference
While enrollment in engineering programs is generally strong nationwide, maintaining or increasing enrollment in Engineering Technology programs at smaller regional campuses can be challenging. The problem appears to be multi-faceted, with the rising cost of education and a strong regional job market two of the likely factors that are keeping students from pursuing a college education. This paper presents a summary of the initial work done at a Statewide location of a large national university to redesign how we engage and recruit students from our surrounding counties. Our eventual goal in redesigning the processes is to leverage our ability to …
