Using Bone Lead As A Biomarker For Lead Toxicity In Condors: Accuracy Of Portable L-X- Ray Fluorescence (Lxrf) Device To Quantify Lead (Pb) In Condor Bone In Vivo, Emma Wallens Sep 2018

Using Bone Lead As A Biomarker For Lead Toxicity In Condors: Accuracy Of Portable L-X- Ray Fluorescence (Lxrf) Device To Quantify Lead (Pb) In Condor Bone In Vivo, Emma Wallens

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Our lab has been working on the development of a portable L- shell x-ray fluorescence (LXRF) device to quantify lead in bone in human in vivo. The purpose of this project is to determine the accuracy of the portable LXRF machine in measuring the lead content of condor bones in vivo. While the K-shell x-ray fluorescence (KXRF) machine is the most accurate machine to measure lead content in vivo because it has sufficient energy to overcome soft tissue attenuation, it is not very practical for use in a research lab with animals or for researchers covering a large migratory territory …

Fresh Surfaces On Q-Type Asteroids: Close Planetary Encounters Unlikely To Be The Source, Matt Prymek Sep 2018

Fresh Surfaces On Q-Type Asteroids: Close Planetary Encounters Unlikely To Be The Source, Matt Prymek

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

The S-type Conundrum refers to a problem in planetary science in which Q-type asteroids, which match the spectra of the most common meteorite found on Earth, the ordinary chondrite (OC), are significantly outnumbered by S-type asteroids, whose color is weathered and reddened by comparison. The accepted solution holds that Q-type and S-type asteroids both have ordinary chondritic composition, but they have experienced a space weathering process that reddened their surfaces. This space weathering process changes the reflectance spectra of OC-composition asteroids from Q-type to S-type over an estimated timescale of about 1 million years. Collisional processes that might resurface asteroids …

Multitasking: The Impact Of Spatial And Verbal Working Memory On The Simon Effect, Emerald Obie Sep 2018

Multitasking: The Impact Of Spatial And Verbal Working Memory On The Simon Effect, Emerald Obie

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

The Simon effect occurs when a person’s reaction time to a stimulus feature such as color is quicker and more accurate when the stimulus occurs in a location that corresponds with the physical response rather than one that does not. For example, if a red circle appears on the right side, the response is the faster when red is assigned to a right physical response than when it is assigned to a left physical response. This effect of irrelevant stimulus location is presumed to be a consequence of having the spatially defined responses active in working memory (WM). Zhao, Chen, …

Fading Memories: Archiving And Annotating Underground Vhs Tapes In Breaking Culture, Saad Mukhtar Sep 2018

Fading Memories: Archiving And Annotating Underground Vhs Tapes In Breaking Culture, Saad Mukhtar

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

This project examines the oral history of the original dance style of Hip Hop, breaking. Breaking is performed to music in sequences of movement while standing, on the floor, and in the air. There is minimal quantitative or qualitative data about the practitioners and scholars in its culture. Most of the information regarding its history is spoken orally or locked away in Video Home System (VHS) tapes. This impacts future generations who want to learn the culture and dance because primary resources are limited and fragmented on the Internet. A hundred VHS tapes, encoded in analog frequency modulation (FM) on …

A Sturdy Glass Ceiling: Representation Of Women On Screen And Behind The Scenes Of Hollywood’S Top 100 Films Throughout The Years, Kara R. Miller Sep 2018

A Sturdy Glass Ceiling: Representation Of Women On Screen And Behind The Scenes Of Hollywood’S Top 100 Films Throughout The Years, Kara R. Miller

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

My research analyzed the representation of women in the film industry, both on screen and behind the scenes. Specifically, I compared the number of women on and off screen for the top 100 films of 2017 (as of September) to the data collected by Martha Lauzen for the top 100 films of 1980,1990, 2000, 2010, and 2015. This comparison graphically depicts the representation of women in film over the years. The positions analyzed were producers, executive producers, directors, cinematographers, writers, and editors.

In addition to researching representation in these roles, I examined what factors, if any, are more likely to …

Talking In Whispers: How School Leaders Approach And Discuss Race, Caleb Hettinger Sep 2018

Talking In Whispers: How School Leaders Approach And Discuss Race, Caleb Hettinger

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

This study seeks to better understand how school administrators approach and discuss issues of race and racism in K–12 schools. Police shootings, the 2016 election, and riots across America have put race at the center of conversations, but many school administrators avoid discussing these issues in professional settings to avoid tension. Existing school leaders were surveyed to determine their attitudes and perceptions of racial dialogue. Findings indicate that school leaders report being willing and comfortable in discussing race. However, administrators also reported that they avoid these discussions unless prompted. Implications from this work suggest a need to better prepare school …

Food For Thought: Restaurants And Place Making, Tania Chakraborty Sep 2018

Food For Thought: Restaurants And Place Making, Tania Chakraborty

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

A bare geographic space is like a brand-new home that hasn’t been lived in yet. As people begin to inhabit these spaces, they build into it to make it representative of themselves, much like we design and set up our houses to turn them into homes. This is how a place goes from just being a location to something that has a deeper meaning to its inhabitants. We look to create into the spaces we inhabit our own little corner of what is familiar to us, so that we can call a space our own. This is the essence of …

Granular Material Mixing: Experiments For Calibration And Validation, Andrew Thomas Cameron Sep 2018

Granular Material Mixing: Experiments For Calibration And Validation, Andrew Thomas Cameron

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Granular material mixing is common in many industrial applications ranging from the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals to the production of construction materials. Problems arise when proper blending is not achieved, which can lead to failure of the desired product. Currently most industries use trial and error to design blending processes. There is a clear need for not only quantitative, mechanics-based models for predicting blending performance but also experimental data that can be used for model calibration and validation.

In order to provide validation and calibration data in support of model development, two mixing experiments were designed and performed to measure the …

Walking For Our Health: Couple-Focused Interventions To Promote Physical Activity In Older Adults, Melissa M. Franks, Elizabeth A. Richards, Meghan H. Mcdonough, Sharon L. Christ, Mary E. Marshall Sep 2018

Walking For Our Health: Couple-Focused Interventions To Promote Physical Activity In Older Adults, Melissa M. Franks, Elizabeth A. Richards, Meghan H. Mcdonough, Sharon L. Christ, Mary E. Marshall

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

More than 50% of U.S. adults do not engage in sufficient physical activity to meet current recommendations, making physical activity change and maintenance a priority for health promotion throughout adulthood. Among married partners, change in physical activity of one partner often is concordant with change of activity of the other. The primary purpose of this study was to examine two couple-focused interventions that capitalize on the co-occurrence of health behavior change within couples to promote physical activity in older adults. In this study, partners (N = 31 couples) participated together in assessment and intervention activities, and were randomized together into …

Oral Sensations And Secretions, Cordelia Running Sep 2018

Oral Sensations And Secretions, Cordelia Running

Department of Food Science Faculty Publications

Sensations experienced in the mouth influence food choices, both immediately and in the long term. Such sensations are themselves influenced by experience with flavors, the chemical environment of the mouth, genetics of receptors for flavors, and individual behavior in the chewing of food. Gustation, the sense of taste, yields information about nutrients, influences palatability, and feeds into the human body's preparation to receive those nutrients. Olfaction, the sense of smell, contributes enormously to defining and identifying food flavors (and is experienced even after placing food inside the mouth). Another vital component of food flavor is texture, which contributes …

Mao's "On Contradiction," Mao-Hegel/Mao-Deleuze, Kenneth Surin Sep 2018

Mao's "On Contradiction," Mao-Hegel/Mao-Deleuze, Kenneth Surin

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Mao Tse-Tung's famous 1937 essay "On Contradiction" is regarded as a significant attempt to redefine and reapply Marx's notion of a "dialectical contradiction" to the Chinese revolutionary conjuncture of Mao's time. I set out the principles outlined in Mao's essay, before arguing that the revolutionary conjuncture of his time no longer exists in the era of globalization and neoliberalism. I conclude that a new conception of "antagonism" is needed, and revise Mao's position with the aid of the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari.

Maoist Aesthetics In Western Left-Wing Thought, Jun Zeng, Siying Duan Sep 2018

Maoist Aesthetics In Western Left-Wing Thought, Jun Zeng, Siying Duan

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article “Maoist Aesthetics in Western Left-wing Thought,” Jun Zeng and Siying Duan discuss a terrain of knowledge called “Maoist aesthetics,” which is the creative misreading of Mao’s “On Contradiction,” the theory and practice of “Cultural Revolution” and other revolutionary literature and arts of Mao’s time by Western Left intellectuals. Scholars and academic communities inspired by Maoism include Bertolt Brecht, Herbert Marcuse, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Louis Pierre Althusser, the Chinese period of Tel Quel, Fredric Jameson, Arif Dirlik, and Contemporary Radical Left intellectuals such as Alain Badiou and Slavoj Zizek. Comparative study of the mutual influence of …

The Quest For Redemption: Central European Jewish Thought In Joseph Roth's Works, Rares G. Piloiu Sep 2018

The Quest For Redemption: Central European Jewish Thought In Joseph Roth's Works, Rares G. Piloiu

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Quest for Redemption: Central European Jewish Thought in Joseph Roth's Works by Rares Piloiu fills an important gap in Roth scholarship, placing Roth’s major works of fiction for the first time in the context of a generational interest in religious redemption among the Jewish intellectuals of Central Europe. In it, Piloiu argues that Roth’s challenging, often contradictory and ambivalent literary output is the result of an attempt to recast moral, political, and historical realities of an empirically observable world in a new, religiously transfigured reality through the medium of literature. This diegetic recasting of phenomenological encounters with the real is …

Chinese Theories Of "Anti-Modern" Or Alternative Modernity: Arif Dirlik, Liu Kang, And Wang Hui, Wu Yuyu Sep 2018

Chinese Theories Of "Anti-Modern" Or Alternative Modernity: Arif Dirlik, Liu Kang, And Wang Hui, Wu Yuyu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In Yuyu Wu’s article, "There and Back Again: A Critical Study on 'Anti-modern Modernity,'" the author discusses the arguments about "anti-modern modernity," raised by Arif Dirlik, Kang Liu and Hui Wang, and compares different contexts in which China’s modernity has been understood and interpreted. Both Dirlik and Liu reflect upon western Critical Theory through analysis of the Chinese experience, while Wang brings this theory back to China. However, in this two-way journey, a structural change occurs. By justifying China’s historical experience through abstract western theories, western Critical Theory has not only lost its sharp critical edge, but also transmogrified into …
