Magis Brugge: Visualizing Marcus Gerards’ 16th-Century Map Through Its 21st-Century Digitization, Elien Vernackt Nov 2018

Magis Brugge: Visualizing Marcus Gerards’ 16th-Century Map Through Its 21st-Century Digitization, Elien Vernackt

Artl@s Bulletin

Marcus Gerards delivered his town plan of Bruges in 1562 and managed to capture the imagination of viewers ever since. The 21st century digitization project MAGIS Brugge, supported by the Flemish government, has helped to treat this map as a primary source worthy of examination itself, rather than as a decorative illustration for local history. A historical database was built on top of it, with the analytic method called ‘Digital Thematic Deconstruction.’ This enabled scholars to study formally overlooked details, like how it was that Gerards was able to balance the requirements of his patrons against his own …

Indigenous Stylistic & Conceptual Innovation In The Uppsala Map Of Mexico City (C. 1540), Jennifer Saracino Nov 2018

Indigenous Stylistic & Conceptual Innovation In The Uppsala Map Of Mexico City (C. 1540), Jennifer Saracino

Artl@s Bulletin

The only known map of Mexico City painted with the collaboration of indigenous artists, the Mapa Uppsala (c. 1540) depicts the city and surrounding Valley of Mexico. This essay counters previous characterizations of the map’s formal composition as one that has fully espoused European cartographic modes. This essay contextualizes the Mapa Uppsala within the extant corpus of pre-Hispanic and early colonial cartographies to demonstrate that a closer analysis of pictorial conventions and structures can shed light on how and why the artists might have consciously selected particular pictorial strategies.

El único mapa conocido de la ciudad de México pintado con …

Thinking Globally, Mapping Locally: Styles And Discourse In Transatlantic Cartography, Delia A. Cosentino Nov 2018

Thinking Globally, Mapping Locally: Styles And Discourse In Transatlantic Cartography, Delia A. Cosentino

Artl@s Bulletin

Maps have the special capacity to create and project spatial frameworks through both their physical and stylistic forms. The close study of maps as constructed objects re-centers the principle element of any art historical problem, relational thinking through visual culture. A cartographic representation examined as an element of its historical context can simultaneously articulate a specific perspective on a particular place, and reveal broader dialogues of which that viewpoint is one part. The articles brought together here examine a variety of local mappings contingent on more global thinking in the transatlantic world, from the colonial period to the twentieth century.

Economic Resilience And Concentration In Indiana Over 2002-2016, Santiago Ruiz, Michael Wilcox, Indraneel Kumar

Purdue GIS Day

It is well accepted that recessionary shocks affect long-term patterns of economic growth within regions. For this reason, it is important to understand how regional economies recover and in which extent a shock could be an economic burden in long term. A relevant variable to measure shock’s impact is employment, for two reasons. First, past recessions suggested that in most cases, the decline in employment tended to be deeper than in output. Second, layoffs of workers are key forms of adjustment to which employees seek to reduce costs. Given these, our research aims to understand shifts in employees during, after …

Gis To Address Questions In Forest Ecology And Management, Nicolas Picard Nov 2018

Gis To Address Questions In Forest Ecology And Management, Nicolas Picard

Purdue GIS Day

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are powerful tools to deal with spatialized issues. As such, they have become routine tools in forestry to delimit forest resources, support the design of forest inventories, map forest resources, and analyze, model and support decision making to sustainably manage forests. Two examples will be provided to show how forest management can benefit from progress in GIS technology. The first one deals with the optimization of forest roads to harvest trees in tropical rainforests. It required the development of heuristics to solve the multiple target access problem in a reasonable time. The second one deals with …

Scheduling Transformation And Dependence Tests For Recursive Programs, Kirshanthan Sundararajah, Milind Kulkarni Nov 2018

Scheduling Transformation And Dependence Tests For Recursive Programs, Kirshanthan Sundararajah, Milind Kulkarni

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Scheduling transformations reorder the execution of operations in a program to improve locality and/or parallelism. The polyhedral model provides a general framework for performing instance-wise scheduling transformations for regular programs, reordering the iterations of loops that operate over dense arrays through transformations like tiling. There is no analogous framework for recursive programs—despite recent interest in optimizations like tiling and fusion for recursive applications. This paper presents PolyRec, the first general framework for applying scheduling transformations—like inlining, interchange, and code motion—to nested recursive programs and reasoning about their correctness. We describe the phases of PolyRec—representing dynamic instances, applying transformations, reasoning about …

The intricacy of the construction practices sometimes causes the vague atmosphere between clients, partners, and providers, is one of the Achilles heels of infrastructure projects; this grounds the industry as the most inefficient, corrupted business in the world. Governments, in recent years, have made a significant positive effort on public transparency. E-government is an effective tool to execute the very subject. Not only e-government helps transparency, but also it provides openness, accountability, the participation of citizens, etc. By giving citizens access to the functionality of public organizations and institutions, and providing open media for public debates, nations can obtain higher …

How Much Do Purdue's Trees Weigh? Estimating Biomass In Urban Areas, Jacob Klaybor, Gillian Clark, Brady Hardiman Nov 2018

How Much Do Purdue's Trees Weigh? Estimating Biomass In Urban Areas, Jacob Klaybor, Gillian Clark, Brady Hardiman

Purdue GIS Day

Vegetation plays an important role in urban areas by reducing the urban heat island effect, sequestering carbon emissions, and providing socioeconomic benefits to the surrounding areas. However, the roles and distributions of urban forests have historically been ignored or underestimated. This presentation uses the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, as a case study to quantify the aboveground vegetative biomass of campus trees. Tree biomass is calculated with data from the Purdue Arboretum and family-specific allometric relationships based on each tree's diameter at breast height to estimate the total carbon storage available within campus trees. Biomass estimates of …

D2p: Automatically Creating Distributed Dynamic Programming Codes, Nikhil Hegde, Qifan Chang, Milind Kulkarni Oct 2018

D2p: Automatically Creating Distributed Dynamic Programming Codes, Nikhil Hegde, Qifan Chang, Milind Kulkarni

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Dynamic Programming (DP) algorithms are common targets for parallelization, and, as these algorithms are applied to larger inputs, distributed implementations become necessary. However, creating distributed-memory solutions involves the challenges of task creation, program and data partitioning, communication optimization, and task scheduling. In this paper we present D2P, an end-to-end system for automatically transforming a specification of any recursive DP algorithm into distributed-memory implementation of the algorithm. When given a pseudo-code of a recursive DP algorithm, D2P automatically generates the corresponding MPI-based implementation. Our evaluation of the generated distributed implementations shows that they are efficient and scalable. Moreover, D2P-generated implementations are …

Why Teach With Pbl? Motivational Factors Underlying Middle And High School Teachers’ Use Of Problem-Based Learning, Huei-Chen Lee, Margaret R. Blanchard Oct 2018

Why Teach With Pbl? Motivational Factors Underlying Middle And High School Teachers’ Use Of Problem-Based Learning, Huei-Chen Lee, Margaret R. Blanchard

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This quantitative study examined factors underlying middle and high school teachers’ choices about whether to use problem-based learning (PBL). Survey items measured respondents’ perceived competence, autonomy, and relatedness, and the value and costs they placed on implementing PBL. Teachers who have taught with PBL (n = 126) had significantly more formal PBL professional development, higher levels of perceived competence and value for this pedagogy, perceived more support from peers, and perceived lower costs than did the non–PBL use teachers (n = 30). Findings highlight the importance of formal PBL professional development in increasing teachers’ intention to implement PBL …

Mackinder And The Arctic's Emerging Geopolitics: Recommendations For The U.S. And Its Nato Allies, Bert Chapman

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

This presentation shows how Halford Mackinder (1861-1947) described Canada and the Arctic region in his geopolitical writings. It goes on to stress how the Arctic is becoming increasingly important in international geopolitical policymaking due to its significant oil and natural gas resources, how warming temperatures are increasing international access to its waters, and the how countries as diverse as Canada, China, Russia, and the U.S. see the Arctic region in their strategic policymaking. It concludes by stressing that the Arctic can no longer be viewed as a region immune from international conflict and presents recommendations for the U.S. and its …

Combining these two unique areas of library activity offers opportunities for new library research by leveraging methods from DH to tackle problems in scholarly communications. Researchers at Purdue are collaborating on just such a project by applying digital tools to the analysis of predatory publishing. In …

The Role Of Problem Representation In Producing Near-Optimal Tsp Tours, Pierson Fleischer, Sébastien Hélie, Zygmunt Pizlo Oct 2018

The Role Of Problem Representation In Producing Near-Optimal Tsp Tours, Pierson Fleischer, Sébastien Hélie, Zygmunt Pizlo

The Journal of Problem Solving

Gestalt psychologists pointed out about 100 years ago that a key to solving difficult insight problems is to change the mental representation of the problem, as is the case, for example, with solving the six matches problem in 2D vs. 3D space. In this study we ask a different question, namely what representation is used when subjects solve search, rather than insight problems. Some search problems, such as the traveling salesman problem (TSP), are defined in the Euclidean plane on the computer monitor or on a piece of paper, and it seems natural to assume that subjects who solve a …

Between Tradition And Prophecy: The Impact Of The Personality Of Chiara Lubich, Bernhard Callebaut Oct 2018

Between Tradition And Prophecy: The Impact Of The Personality Of Chiara Lubich, Bernhard Callebaut

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

How does change occur in society? How does it occur in religion? A sociological approach to these questions deals with issues not addressed by historians. Is a given change primarily a question of contextual factors, or do individual personalities have an independent role in bringing about such change? The author examines the case of Chiara Lubich and the foundation of the Focolare Movement. He asks whether Chiara Lubich and the Focolare represent phenomena that cannot be entirely attributed to the normal flow of historical processes. What is the role of tradition in this story, and what stems from innovation?

Beyond Secularism And Fundamentalism: Reinventing Global Citizenship, Donald W. Mitchell Oct 2018

Beyond Secularism And Fundamentalism: Reinventing Global Citizenship, Donald W. Mitchell

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The author presented a version of this article at the Sixth Buddhist-Christian Colloquium of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, November 13–16, 2017, in Taiwan. The topic of that dialogue was “Buddhists and Christians Walking Together on the Path of Nonviolence.” The author begins by tracing the origin of the term “Fundamentalism” to the South of the United States; it called for a “battle royal” for conservative Christianity against other religions and points of view. It was tied to the first American Christian terrorist group, the Ku Klux Klan. He then quotes Pope Benedict’s rejection of all forms of Fundamentalism. …

Catholic Renewal Movements And Dialogue, Roberto Catalano

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The birth and growth of renewal movements in the Catholic Church over the last 75 years is linked with Vatican II. In the same period, comparable movements have also sprouted in the Abrahamic and Eastern religious traditions. In addition to fostering renewed commitment within their respective communities, the emergence of such movements has also led to dynamic interreligious dialogue, fostering collaboration on global issues like peace, disarmament and ecology.

Global Dialogue Among Religions: An Islamic Perspective, Adnane Mokrani Oct 2018

Global Dialogue Among Religions: An Islamic Perspective, Adnane Mokrani

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The author raises questions about some aspects of the role of the theologian in a global world. He points out that the issues that theology faced in the past do not always directly connect with today’s issues. In the past, a Muslim theologian was considered an expert in theology, law and Sufism. But many definitive categories from the past seem antiquated in today’s complicated post-modern, globalizing world. We must now formulate our discourse in such a way as to be meaningful within our respective communities, but also within a larger pluralistic audience. Dialogue facilitates the process of distinguishing between the …

Europe In A Changing World: European Concerns, Reflections, And Perspectives, Léonce Bekemans Oct 2018

Europe In A Changing World: European Concerns, Reflections, And Perspectives, Léonce Bekemans

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

This article describes a Europe at the crossroads. The challenges facing the project of European integration are both internal and external. The various crises that Europe faces are symptoms of a broader and systemic crisis. The author argues that Europe’s ability to respond to global challenges depends on its ability to adopt an open-ended vision and forward-looking story line. The author identifies a number of tasks that need to be attended to on an ongoing basis so that Europe can progress as a “multipurpose community.”
