Religions In The Global World: Prospects For Sophia Global Studies, Fabio Petito Oct 2018

Religions In The Global World: Prospects For Sophia Global Studies, Fabio Petito

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The author offers some reflections on the place of religions in a global world. The first relates to the failure of the so-called secularization thesis, and the re-emergence of religion in the international arena. The second relates to certain imbalances in the ways in which commentators have dealt with this resurgence, especially when they link religions to conflict without recognizing the potentialities that religions offer for conflict resolution. The third point builds on the previous, recognizing the growing recognition that religion can represent a strategic resource for diplomacy, peace-building and development. The author recognizes the potential that the Sophia Global …

Europe: Religious Identity In A Fragmented Age, Olivier Roy Oct 2018

Europe: Religious Identity In A Fragmented Age, Olivier Roy

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The author offers a reflection on the question of Christian identity in a changing Europe. He points out that it was only as the number of practicing Christians in public life diminished that the question of the Christian identity of the continent arose. He questions the kinds of uncritical identification of European and Christian culture that arises in the fact of increased Islamic immigration. He surveys the principal options facing Christians and Christian culture as Europe faces an uncertain future.

Looking At The Global Transformations: Why An Integrated Perspective Is Still Required, Pasquale Ferrara, Paolo Frizzi Oct 2018

Looking At The Global Transformations: Why An Integrated Perspective Is Still Required, Pasquale Ferrara, Paolo Frizzi

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

In this article, the authors offer an introduction to the Sophia Global Studies center, its methodology and framework, and offer some reflections on the ways in which this center can respond to the complex issues facing humanity in an increasingly globalized world. They argue that the recent appearance of isolationist trends in various parts of the world only confirms the relevance of this center of global studies.

Inauguration Of The First Course Of The Institute Of Higher Learning, Chiara Lubich

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

We publish the talk that Chiara Lubich gave in 2001 at the inauguration of the Istituto Superiore di Cultura, the historical forerunner of the Sophia University Institute. She recalls her mystical experience of 1949 and illustrates how this experience inspires a new vision of university studies for the renewal of culture in the spirit of unity.

Transnational Vietnamese: Language Practices, New Literacies, And Redefinition Of The “American Dream”, Nguyen Dao Oct 2018

Transnational Vietnamese: Language Practices, New Literacies, And Redefinition Of The “American Dream”, Nguyen Dao

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

The research focuses on the transnational literacy and language practices of a Vietnamese immigrant family in Midwestern United States. Drawing upon multiple bodies of contemporary research and conceptual frameworks, this investigation intends to go beyond transnational movements to indicate the complex nature of bi-literate, bilingual and bi-cultural development and the role of national and supranational ideologies, as well as to describe how the Vietnamese diaspora have mobilized their identities and in so doing, redefined the provoking term “the American Dream.”

Is Judaism Democratic?: Reflections From Theory And Practice Throughout The Ages, Leonard Greenspoon Oct 2018

Is Judaism Democratic?: Reflections From Theory And Practice Throughout The Ages, Leonard Greenspoon

Studies in Jewish Civilization

As government by the people, democracy has always had its proponents as well as opponents. What forms of government have Jewish leaders, both with and without actual political power, favored? Not surprisingly, many options have been offered theoretically and in practice. Perhaps more surprisingly, democracy has been at the heart of most systems of governance. Biblical Israel was largely a monarchy, but many writers of the Bible were critical of the excesses that almost always arise when human kings take charge: the general populace loses its freedom. In rabbinic Judaism, the majority ruled, and many principles that support modern democratic …

Understanding The Needs Of Fraternity, Sorority, And Cooperative Learning Students, Rachel Bremer, Harry Denny Oct 2018

Understanding The Needs Of Fraternity, Sorority, And Cooperative Learning Students, Rachel Bremer, Harry Denny

Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Presentations

This presentation draws inspiration from the Meaningful Writing Project and other studies of writing center usage. Instead of exploring who is coming in for tutorials, we study where students are getting support outside of writing centers. We confirm earlier research that Purdue students seek out writing help from parents and friends, and we hope to begin programming that empowers bother groups to act as better writing mentors.

Desensitization But Not Sensitization From Commercial Chemesthetic Beverages, Cordelia Running Oct 2018

Desensitization But Not Sensitization From Commercial Chemesthetic Beverages, Cordelia Running

Department of Food Science Faculty Publications

Sensations such as spiciness or stinging are particularly challenging to assess in sensory evaluation tests, as sensitization (increase in intensity with repeated tasting) and desensitization (decrease in intensity with repeated tasting) phenomena can confound intensity ratings. However, much of the published work on these phenomena are with model solutions or complex meals rather than commercial beverages. Thus, we tested whether we could observe sensitization or desensitization using canned spicy ginger beer (contained chili extract) and seltzer water. Samples were presented in pairs, with a 20 s wait and no rinse within a pair, but a 4 min wait with rinsing …

Chemical Stability And Reaction Kinetics Of Two Thiamine Salts (Thiamine Mononitrate And Thiamine Chloride Hydrochloride) In Solution, Lisa J. Mauer, Adrienne L. Voelker, Jenna Miller, Cordelia Running, Lynne S. Taylor Oct 2018

Chemical Stability And Reaction Kinetics Of Two Thiamine Salts (Thiamine Mononitrate And Thiamine Chloride Hydrochloride) In Solution, Lisa J. Mauer, Adrienne L. Voelker, Jenna Miller, Cordelia Running, Lynne S. Taylor

Department of Food Science Faculty Publications

Two types of thiamine (vitamin B1) salts, thiamine mononitrate (TMN) and thiamine chloride hydrochloride (TClHCl), are used to enrich and fortify food products. Both of these thiamine salt forms are sensitive to heat, alkali, oxygen, and radiation, but differences in stability between them have been noted. It was hypothesized that stability differences between the two thiamine salts could be explained by differences in solubility, solution pH, and activation energies for degradation. This study directly compared the stabilities of TMN and TClHCl in solution over time by documenting the impact of concentration and storage temperature on thiamine degradation and …

Hypothesis Paper: Mechanism For Primary Blast Induced Traumatic Brain Injury With Minimal Head Motion, Charles F. Babbs Oct 2018

Hypothesis Paper: Mechanism For Primary Blast Induced Traumatic Brain Injury With Minimal Head Motion, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

Transit of the human skull by blast waves produces diffuse brain injury. The exact mechanisms are unknown. This paper describes plausible mechanisms in which steep intracranial pressure gradients, demonstrated in prior computational models of blast-skull interaction, produce subsequent deformation and motion of the whole brain within the skull, without obvious movement of the head. Equations of motion are derived to describe the acceleration, velocity, and relative position of both the skull and the brain in response to known extracranial and intracranial pressures both during and several hundred milliseconds after blast wave passage. A finite element model is solved to visualize …

Consumer Perceptions Of Egg-Laying Hen Housing Systems, Daniel S. Ochs, Christopher A. Wolf, Nicole Olynk Widmar, Courtney Bir Oct 2018

Consumer Perceptions Of Egg-Laying Hen Housing Systems, Daniel S. Ochs, Christopher A. Wolf, Nicole Olynk Widmar, Courtney Bir

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

The egg industry has transitioned, or is in the process of transitioning, from conventional cages to alternative hen housing systems in response to legal changes in many states across the United States (US). However, consumers find it is increasingly difficult to understand the details behind those labels and specific attributes conveyed. There are multiple hen housing options with a wide range of costs and impacts on hens, workers, and the environment. This research furthers the understanding of US public perceptions and attitudes related to hen housing systems and corresponding animal welfare, worker, economic, and environmental effects. Results reveal that the …
