Women Artists' Salon Of Chicago (1937-1953): Cultivating Careers And Art Collectors, Joanna P. Gardner-Huggett May 2019

Women Artists' Salon Of Chicago (1937-1953): Cultivating Careers And Art Collectors, Joanna P. Gardner-Huggett

Artl@s Bulletin

This article reconstructs the history of the Women Artists’ Salon of Chicago, which was founded as an exhibition society in Chicago in 1937, and argues that the Board of Directors turned to the 19th century precedents of the Palette Club and the Woman’s Building at the World’s Columbian Exhibition as models for their organization. The essay also traces how members of the Women Artists’ Salon deliberately exhibited traditional artworks associated with the feminine and domestic and coordinated social events in order to cultivate greater sales and a new generation of female art collectors.

Women's Art Club And Women’S Group Exhibitions In Zagreb From 1928 Until 1940, Darija Alujević, Dunja Nekić

Artl@s Bulletin

In 1927 painters Nasta Rojc and Lina Crnčić Virant, inspired by their British colleagues founded the Women's Art Club in Zagreb. From 1928 until 1940 the Club organized group exhibitions of its members. The main idea of the Club was to improve arts and crafts, to organize female exhibitions and to collaborate with other international women associations. The Club took part in the organisation of the exhibition of Bulgarian women artists and the exhibition of the Little Entente of Women held in 1938 in Zagreb. Women`s Art Club was an important factor of the female artists' emancipation – organizing the …

The Exhibitions Of The Femmes Artistes Modernes (Fam), Paris, 1931-38, Paula J. Birnbaum May 2019

The Exhibitions Of The Femmes Artistes Modernes (Fam), Paris, 1931-38, Paula J. Birnbaum

Artl@s Bulletin

The Société des Femmes Artistes Modernes (FAM) opened up a productive space for women artists who were active in Paris during the 1930s through annual multigenerational exhibitions and international collaborations. I argue that FAM embodied a paradox: on the one hand, it supported artists wishing to question stereotypes of gender, race, class, and nation; on the other, its institutional structure and leadership did not challenge patriarchal assumptions about women’s subordinate role in society. The paper explores this tension by comparing the work and critical reception of several artists in the group who represented the theme of motherhood.

An Exhibition Of One’S Own: The Salón Femenino De Bellas Artes (Buenos Aires, 1930s-1940s), Georgina G. Gluzman May 2019

An Exhibition Of One’S Own: The Salón Femenino De Bellas Artes (Buenos Aires, 1930s-1940s), Georgina G. Gluzman

Artl@s Bulletin

From the late 1920s on, Buenos Aires witnessed the emergence of exhibition spaces of a separatist character for women artists. In spite of their importance, these regular shows have not received any attention from art history literature. Their vast development, the extensive coverage by the press, and their links to feminist institutions have gone completely unnoticed. Focusing on the Salón Femenino organized by the Club Argentino de Mujeres, the purpose of this article is to reconstruct the organization of these events, to examine their reception by art critics, and to analyze the careers of some of the participating women …

"Actividades Femeninas" Collective Exhibitions Of Women In Chile Between 1914 And 1939, Gloria Cortes May 2019

"Actividades Femeninas" Collective Exhibitions Of Women In Chile Between 1914 And 1939, Gloria Cortes

Artl@s Bulletin

In 1927 the Great Female Exhibition was held in Chile within the framework of the fiftieth anniversary of the Amunátegui Decree (1877), a precept that allowed women to go to university. The Exhibition was the result of a series of initiatives by the high bourgeoisie that began in 1914 with the creation of women's organizations such as the Women's Art Society.

Twelve years later, in 1939, the MEMCH —Pro Emancipation Movement of Women in Chile— held the Feminine Activities exhibition, conceived as a response to previous experiences led by the elite, and focused on the political and social …

"Women Artists To Victims Of War" - The First Exhibition Of The Moscow Union Of Women Painters And Its Reception By The Contemporary Press., Natalia Y. Budanova

Artl@s Bulletin

A few surviving visual and documentary sources related to the exhibition Women Artists to Victims of the War organised by the Moscow Union of Women Painters in winter 1914 represent a useful primary material for piecing together fragments of the history of this short-lived female art group. The Union exemplified impressive gender changes in educational and professional spheres of Russian art. Yet, it failed to attract strong membership and disintegrated within few years after its institution. By analysing available evidence this essay seeks to uncover and assess the causes of the Union’s defeat in establishing a prominent public profile.

The Exhibition Of Former Students Of The Elise Von Jung-Stilling Drawing School In Riga In 1904, Baiba Vanaga

Artl@s Bulletin

In the 19th century, the art scene in the Baltic provinces and their largest city, Riga, was fairly undeveloped: it was impossible to acquire good arts education, the art market practically did not existed and only a comparatively small number of artists educated outside of the Baltics were working there. The local art scene became significantly more active after 1870, when the Riga Art Society was established. In 1898, Society opened its Art Salon, which held several solo exhibitions of women artists and at least two group shows where all of the participants were women: the exhibition of works by …

“Non Più Cenerentole!” The Società Delle Artiste At The 1906 Mostra Nazionale Di Belle Arti In Milan, Chiara Iorino

Artl@s Bulletin

The Society of women artists was created in Rome in the house of the painter Ida Salvagnini Bidoli and her husband Francesco Alberto Salvagnini. Its members presented themselves as a group at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts during the International Exhibition of Sempione in Milan in 1906 where they managed to get their own room. This article will describe the difficulties encountered by these artists, show the importance of the exhibition as a site where artistic ambitions coincided with the women’s movement and contextualize it within the broader transformations of women’s roles in Italy at the beginning of the …

Le Cercle Des Femmes Peintres De Bruxelles : Un Collectif, Quatre Expositions (1888-1893), Denis Laoureux May 2019

Le Cercle Des Femmes Peintres De Bruxelles : Un Collectif, Quatre Expositions (1888-1893), Denis Laoureux

Artl@s Bulletin

L'Esposizione Internazionale Femminile Di Belle Arti (Torino, 1910-1911; 1913). Note Su Genere, Arte E Professione In Italia All'inizio Del Xx Secolo, Francesca Lombardi

Artl@s Bulletin

A Cooperative Overlay Approach At The Physical Layer Of Cognitive Radio For Digital Agriculture, Abdul Salam, Umit Karabiyik May 2019

A Cooperative Overlay Approach At The Physical Layer Of Cognitive Radio For Digital Agriculture, Abdul Salam, Umit Karabiyik

Faculty Publications

In digital agriculture, the cognitive radio technology is being envisaged as solution to spectral shortage problems by allowing agricultural cognitive users to co-exist with noncognitive users in the same spectrum on the field. Cognitive radios increase system capacity and spectral efficiency by sensing the spectrum and adapting the transmission parameters. This design requires a robust, adaptable and flexible physical layer to support cognitive radio functionality. In this paper, a novel physical layer architecture for cognitive radio based on cognition, cooperation, and cognitive interference avoidance has been developed by using power control for digital agriculture applications. The design is based on …

Farmers’ Perspectives On Challenges And Opportunities Associated With Using High Tunnels For Specialty Crops, Analena B. Bruce, Elizabeth Maynard, James R. Farmer May 2019

Farmers’ Perspectives On Challenges And Opportunities Associated With Using High Tunnels For Specialty Crops, Analena B. Bruce, Elizabeth Maynard, James R. Farmer

Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications

High tunnels are an increasingly popular part of the infrastructure among small and diversified farms that market their products directly to consumers. In addition to extending the growing season, research has strongly indicated that high tunnels can increase yield, enhance shelf life, and improve the quality of crops grown. The objective of this study was to gain a better understanding, from the perspective of farmers, of the challenges and opportunities associated with adopting high tunnels for specialty crops in Indiana. We collected information through a case study that included questionnaires and in-depth interviews with 20 farmers. We found that the …

Twitter And Disasters: A Social Resilience Fingerprint, Benjamin A. Rachunok, Jackson B. Bennett, Roshanak Nateghi

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Understanding the resilience of a community facing a crisis event is critical to improving its adaptive capacity. Community resilience has been conceptualized as a function of the resilience of components of a community such as ecological, infrastructure, economic, and social systems, etc. In this paper, we introduce the concept of a “resilience fingerprint” and propose a multi-dimensional method for analyzing components of community resilience by leveraging existing definitions of community resilience with data from the social network Twitter. Twitter data from 14 events are analyzed and their resulting resilience fingerprints computed. We compare the fingerprints between events and show that …

The Forsaken Jesus And The Black Sun Of Atheism, Robert Young May 2019

The Forsaken Jesus And The Black Sun Of Atheism, Robert Young

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

This article begins with a presentation of the thought of French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy, who characterizes contemporary thinking as a gravitational movement around the “black sun” of atheism. Although he is an atheist himself, his project is to find an opening from within atheism that will allow contemporary thought to break free of the gravitational force of unbelief that keeps us locked into a post-Enlightenment nihilistic worldview. The article presents Nancy’s turn to Christianity and his intuition that the deconstruction of Christian realities such as “creation,” “ faith,” and “prayer” can provide a way out of our current dilemma. In …

Naomi Shihab Nye: A Border-Crossing Voice, Anan Alkass Yousif

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The author writes: Acknowledging her Palestinian and American origins, Naomi Shihab Nye (1952–) once said: “I didn’t fear differences. In fact, I loved them. This is one of the best things about growing up in a mixed family or community.” 1 Being born to a Palestinian father and an American mother, she came to be multiculturally oriented. For the past decades, Nye has gained great recognition for her poetry and prose writings about cultural differences, heritage, and peace. Her wide and multiple perspectives of a world of various ethnic traditions were crucial not only to her poetic groundwork for a …

Revealed Religion’S Vital Contribution To The Epoch-Making Newness Of A Culture Of Unity, Piero Coda

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

The author writes: “In memory of Bishop Pietro Rossano, that unforgettable and wise teacher in the past and in the present, about dialogue among religions, this article offers the text of a lecture titled ‘Unity of God, Unity in God.’ The lecture was part of a course organized by Sophia University Institute in Loppiano and the Islamic Centre of England in London with twenty Catholic university students and an equal number of Muslims. It was held at Tonadico (Trent) in September 2017. Among other things, I was inspired by the following affirmation of Bishop Rossano; it is like the hidden …

Evaluating Small Uas Operations And National Airspace System Interference Using Aeroscope, Ryan J. Wallace, Kristy M. Kiernan, Tom Haritos, John Robbins, Jon M. Loffi

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

A recent rash of near mid-air collisions coupled with the widespread proliferation of small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) raise concerns that integration is posing additional risk to the National Airspace System. In 2016, sUAS sighting reports by manned aircraft pilots averaged 147 per month. In the first three quarters of 2017, sUAS sightings jumped to 188 per month. The purpose of this study was to evaluate sUAS operator behavior to determine potential interference with aviation operations. While previous research has indeed yielded findings about operator behavior, such studies were generally based on data derived from Aviation Safety Reporting System filings …

The Anti-Inflammatory Effects Of Dietary Anthocyanins Against Ulcerative Colitis, Shiyu Li, Binning Wu, Wenyi Fu, Lavanya Reddivari

Department of Food Science Faculty Publications

Ulcerative colitis (UC), which is a major form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), is a chronic relapsing disorder of the gastrointestinal tract affecting millions of people worldwide. Alternative natural therapies, including dietary changes, are being investigated to manage or treat UC since current treatment options have serious negative side effects. There is growing evidence from animal studies and human clinical trials that diets rich in anthocyanins, which are pigments in fruits and vegetables, protect against inflammation and increased gut permeability as well as improve colon health through their ability to alter bacterial metabolism and the microbial milieu within the intestines. …

Boarding an airplane is difficult for persons with mobility impairments and increases the risk of injury to both passengers and employees. Airplane seats are uncomfortable and lack the necessary support for many individuals with disabilities. Additionally, airplane restrooms can be inaccessible to wheelchair users. Potential solutions for these issues include the use of detachable plane seats or personal wheelchairs on board and an airplane redesign to provide additional restroom space. The number of service and emotional support animals being brought on airplanes have also increased substantially over the past few years. Passengers that travel with their service animals must contend …

Finding Edith: Surviving The Holocaust In Plain Sight, Edith Mayer Cord

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Finding Edith: Surviving the Holocaust in Plain Sight is the coming-of-age story of a young Jewish girl chased in Europe during World War II. Like a great adventure story, the book describes the childhood and adolescence of a Viennese girl growing up against the backdrop of the Great Depression, the rise of Nazism, World War II, and the religious persecution of Jews throughout Europe. Edith was hunted in Western Europe and Vichy France, where she was hidden in plain sight, constantly afraid of discovery and denunciation. Forced to keep every thought to herself, Edith developed an intense inner life. After …
