Smiler: Consistent And Usable Saliency Model Implementations, Toni Kunic, Calden Wloka, John K. Tsotsos
MODVIS Workshop
The Saliency Model Implementation Library for Experimental Research (SMILER) is a new software package which provides an open, standardized, and extensible framework for maintaining and executing computational saliency models. This work drastically reduces the human effort required to apply saliency algorithms to new tasks and datasets, while also ensuring consistency and procedural correctness for results and conclusions produced by different parties. At its launch SMILER already includes twenty three saliency models (fourteen models based in MATLAB and nine supported through containerization), and the open design of SMILER encourages this number to grow with future contributions from the community. The project …

Computations Of Top-Down Attention By Modulating V1 Dynamics, David Berga, Xavier Otazu
MODVIS Workshop
The human visual system processes information defining what is visually conspicuous (saliency) to our perception, guiding eye movements towards certain objects depending on scene context and its feature characteristics. However, attention has been known to be biased by top-down influences (relevance), which define voluntary eye movements driven by goal-directed behavior and memory. We propose a unified model of the visual cortex able to predict, among other effects, top-down visual attention and saccadic eye movements. First, we simulate activations of early mechanisms of the visual system (RGC/LGN), by processing distinct image chromatic opponencies with Gabor-like filters. Second, we use a cortical …

Differentiating Changes In Population Encoding Models With Psychophysics And Neuroimaging, Jason Hays, Fabian Soto Phd
Differentiating Changes In Population Encoding Models With Psychophysics And Neuroimaging, Jason Hays, Fabian Soto Phd
MODVIS Workshop
It is now common among visual scientists to make inferences about neural population coding of stimuli from indirect measures such as those provided by neuroimaging and psychophysics. The success of such studies depends strongly on simulation work using standard population encoding models extended with decoders (in psychophysics) and measurement models (in neuroimaging). However, not all studies are accompanied by simulation work, and those that are tend to vary widely in their assumptions about encoding, decoding, and measurement. To solve these issues, we designed a Python package (PEMGUIN) to assist computational modelling by providing simple ways to manage encoders' tuning functions, …

Differentiation As Measured By The Classroom Practices Survey: A Validity Study Updating The Original Instrument, Nielsen Pereira, Juliana Tay, Yukiko Maeda, Marcia Gentry
Department of Educational Studies Faculty Publications
The Classroom Practices Survey is an instrument developed to collect information on educators’ use of differentiated instruction with students achieving at average and high levels. The purposes of this study were to investigate if the Classroom Practices Survey (1) yields reliable and valid data from the groups it was originally designed for, and (2) can be used to evaluate teachers’ differentiation practices for students who achieve at low levels. Participants included 648 elementary teachers who completed the Classroom Practices Survey on students achieving at high, average, and low levels. Results of confirmatory factor analyses revealed that the original six-factor model …
Assessment Of Household Food Security In Fish Farming Communities In Ghana, Akua S. Akuffo, Kwamena Quagrainie
Assessment Of Household Food Security In Fish Farming Communities In Ghana, Akua S. Akuffo, Kwamena Quagrainie
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
The Government of Ghana and international NGOs have been encouraging the adoption of fish farming to alleviate poverty and food insecurity through training workshops, financial contributions and creation of a fisheries ministry. Nevertheless, there is no study on how these efforts have influenced the household’s welfare, particularly their nutritional quality. Based on this, our objective is to identify the ways through which fish farming impacts the household’s nutritional quality. We hypothesize that engaging in fish farming will increase steady income flow and access to fish for the household’s direct consumption. We adopted the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) approach in a …

Virtual Eye: A Spatial-Temporal Bottom-Up Eye Sensitivity Model, Todd Goodall
Virtual Eye: A Spatial-Temporal Bottom-Up Eye Sensitivity Model, Todd Goodall
MODVIS Workshop
Video quality and compression models use the
spatial contrast sensitivity function (CSF), which is solved
based on a linear system approximation. This function measures
the eye’s sensitivity to sinusoid gratings, ignoring the subtle
connectivity and inhomogeniety of cell density across the
visual field. Non-linear aspects of the eye, such as the change
in frequency sensitivity with changing illumination, are not
captured by this simple approximation. We propose Virtual
Eye, a bottom-up approach that models the spatio-temporal
dynamics of the eye across the visual field. Each functional
retinal cell layer in the eye is modeled using non-uniform spatial
cell responses, which …
Recovering Depth From Stereo Without Using Any Oculomotor Information, Tadamasa Sawada
Recovering Depth From Stereo Without Using Any Oculomotor Information, Tadamasa Sawada
MODVIS Workshop
The human visual system uses binocular disparity to perceive depth within 3D scenes. It is commonly assumed that the visual system needs oculomotor information about the relative orientation of the two eyes to perceive depth on the basis of binocular disparity. The necessary oculomotor information can be obtained from an efference copy of the oculomotor signals, or from a 2D distribution of the vertical disparity, specifically, from the vertical component of binocular disparity. It is known that oculomotor information from the efference copy and from the vertical disparity distribution can affect the perception of depth based on binocular disparity. But, …
Modeling Visual Enumeration Using Cumulative Link Regression., Anthony D. Cate Ph.D.
Modeling Visual Enumeration Using Cumulative Link Regression., Anthony D. Cate Ph.D.
MODVIS Workshop
Based on three core assumptions about mental representations of number, this model of visual enumeration specifies analysis methods that can identify when observers rely on different processes to estimate the numerosity of a visual display. Specifically, the model provides a clear criterion for identifying domains of numerosity that correspond to different perceptual or cognitive processes that have been described in numeracy literature, e.g. subitizing. The model predicts how the requirement to give integer responses in enumeration tasks can produce spurious discontinuities in accuracy measures that can be misidentified as evidence for a subitizing process. It is proposed that cumulative link …

Quantified Measurement Of The Tilt Effect In A Family Of Café Wall Illusions, Nasim Nematzadeh Dr., David Martin Powers Prof.
Quantified Measurement Of The Tilt Effect In A Family Of Café Wall Illusions, Nasim Nematzadeh Dr., David Martin Powers Prof.
MODVIS Workshop
This abstract explores the tilt effect in a family of Café Wall illusions using a Classical Gaussian Receptive Field model (CRF). Our model constructs an intermediate representation called edge map at multiple scales (Fig. 1) that reveals tilt cues and clues involved in the illusory perception of the Café Wall pattern. We investigate a wide range of parameters of the stimulus including mortar width, luminance, tiles contrast, and phase of the tile displacement (the stimuli in Fig. 2). We show that this simple bioplausible model, simulating the contrast sensitivity of the retinal ganglion cells, can not only detect the tilts …

Women Artists Shows·Salons·Societies: Towards A Global History Of All-Women Exhibitions, Catherine Dossin, Hanna Alkema
Women Artists Shows·Salons·Societies: Towards A Global History Of All-Women Exhibitions, Catherine Dossin, Hanna Alkema
Artl@s Bulletin
The Women Artists Shows·Salons·Societies project was launched in 2017 as a collaboration between Artl@s and AWARE. Combining AWARE’s ambitions to restore the presence of 20th-century women artists in the history of art, and Artl@s’s desire to provide scholars with the data and tools necessary to question the canonical art historical narratives through quantitative and cartographic analyses, we decided to work on group exhibitions of women artists.
Our first ambition is to build a community of scholars and work together to develop a common terminology and even possibly a common and consistent methodology to study these events, because the ones used …
À L’Assaut ! Explosion D’Expositions De Femmes Artistes En France Pendant Le Mouvement Féministe, Fabienne Dumont
À L’Assaut ! Explosion D’Expositions De Femmes Artistes En France Pendant Le Mouvement Féministe, Fabienne Dumont
Artl@s Bulletin

Femmes Artistes Italiennes Du Xxe Siècle : Il Complesso Di Michelangelo, Rome 1977, Laura Iamurri
Artl@s Bulletin
Exhibiting Women's Art In Post-War Europe, Agata Jakubowska
Exhibiting Women's Art In Post-War Europe, Agata Jakubowska
Artl@s Bulletin
This essay elaborates on women-only shows organized in post-war Europe by the associations of (women) artists, that – as initial research showed – were major initiators of this type of exhibitions during the period. It proposes a comparative analysis of operations of this type of associations in three countries whose situations during and after the war differed considerably: Austria, France and Poland. The geopolitical position of these countries and the gender politics they implemented influenced the operation of (women) artists’ associations and organization of their annual exhibitions, but also the place they occupy in the art historical narratives.

Se Rendre Visible Dans L’Espagne De Franco: Le Salón Femenino De Arte Actual (1962-1971), Maria Lluïsa Faxedas, Isabel Fontbona, Patricia Mayayo
Artl@s Bulletin
The paper examines the history and the critical reception of the Salón femenino del arte actual, an annual all-female exhibition organized by a group of women artists in Barcelona between 1962 and 1971. Unique at the time, the Salón challenged the traditional role attributed to women under Franco's dictatorship, managing at the same time to obtain support from local authorities. The paper argues that it was the ability of the organisers to take advantage of political ambivalence, to find a delicate balance between complicity and resistance, which allowed the exhibition to survive for a decade.

The Exhibition “Contribuição Da Mulher Às Artes Plásticas No País" And The Silence Of Brazilian Art Criticism, Marina Mazze Cerchiaro, Ana Paula Simioni, Talita Trizoli Ms
Artl@s Bulletin
In 1960 the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art inaugurated the exhibition “Contribuição da mulher às artes plásticas no país”. This was the first female collective exhibition of a large scale to happen in Brazil. However, although it happened in a prestigious institution and it gathered renowned artists, this exhibition did not get extensive press coverage and it did not inspire similar initiatives during the decade. This article proposes a reflection on this silence and on the resistance of Brazilian artistic circles to treating women artists as a collective, which could explain the late impact of feminism in this field.
Α “Guarantee Of Clustered Energy And Collective Promotion”: The Association Of Greek Women Artists And Its Exhibitions In The 50s And 60s, Glafki Gotsi
Artl@s Bulletin
Founded in Athens in 1954 the Association of Greek Women Artists aimed at promoting art among the Greek public, confronting the problems of women artists through collective action, and encouraging the presentation of Greek art on the international scene. In the 1950s and 1960s it organized a significant number of group exhibitions in Greece as well as abroad, where its members showed their work. This paper examines the context of the association’s all-women shows and their meaning in relation to feminist cultural politics inside but also beyond national borders. More specifically, it analyzes the circumstances under which the collectivity was …
