Une Rencontre Manquée : Confrontation, Défiance Et Stéréotypes Entre Suds Dans Milano, Fin Qui Tutto Bene De Gabriella Kuruvilla, Nicola Brarda

Artl@s Bulletin

Tony, a Milanese youngster of Neapolitan descent, encounters an Egyptian migrant, Samir, in a bar. Tony is drunk and Samir steals his mobile phone. This episode is narrated briefly in two chapters of Gabriella Kuruvilla’s novel Milano, fin qui tutto bene. We will try to analyze, within this misunderstanding, the ways in which the novel questions the apparent homogeneity of the notion of South, by staging the collision between two distinct Souths within the city : the South embodied by former generations of migrants originating from the Mezzogiorno, as opposed to new migrants coming from the global South.

Une Rose Des Vents Politique: The Southern Winds Of Jean Genet’S Poetic Compass, Joanne Brueton Sep 2019

Une Rose Des Vents Politique: The Southern Winds Of Jean Genet’S Poetic Compass, Joanne Brueton

Artl@s Bulletin

Iconoclastic French dissident, Jean Genet, notoriously channelled his hatred of the West as a way to discover the South. This article reads Genet’s admiration for the Palestinians as more than just a foil to the imperialist hegemony of a French homeland he reviled; but as a relation of equality that debunks the oppression of North-South dialectics. Tackling Éric Marty and Ivan Jablonka’s accusations of anti-Semitism, as well as criticisms of Orientalism, I use Genet’s 1982 essay ‘Quatre heures à Chatila’ to argue that his Palestinian texts radically re-orient the political compass where the North constructs and reifies a one-dimensional South.

The Dilemmas Of African Diaspora In The Global Art Discourse, Sabrina Moura Sep 2019

The Dilemmas Of African Diaspora In The Global Art Discourse, Sabrina Moura

Artl@s Bulletin

In this paper, I explore how the notion of African diaspora has been used as a framework for the reassessment of essentialized identity narratives in field of art history and curatorship, between the1980s and 2000s. For this, I examine the emergence of the concept in the field of cultural studies and how it served as a tool for unsettling the narratives of belonging associated to nation and ethnicity. Such contextualization provides the ground for the analysis of the dilemmas introduced by a diasporic perspective in relation to the field of African art and the local-global art discourse.

Infidelity As Reality: Re-Staging The Global South With Abbas Kiarostami’S Close-Up, Sinan Richards Sep 2019

Infidelity As Reality: Re-Staging The Global South With Abbas Kiarostami’S Close-Up, Sinan Richards

Artl@s Bulletin

In this article, we contend that, in the fields of art and visual culture, the Global South is both an elaborate lie and a radical opportunity for transformation. We investigate Kiarostami’s Close-up alongside Lacan’s psychoanalysis to show how Close-up’s filmic narrative evokes the same ‘polyvalence’ and ‘slipperiness’ as the notion of the Global South. We argue that Kiarostami’s Close-up retroactively changed Sabzian’s fate, and in so doing, Kiarostami’s re-staging actively overwrites History itself. We read the same narrative move in the concept of the Global South to suggest that the Global South adopts the Kiarostamian strategy of infidelity as reality …

Ritualisation Du Langage Et Métaphores Naturelles : Paradigmes Ou Écueils Pour Construire Un Discours Propre Au Sud ?, Cécile Chapon Sep 2019

Ritualisation Du Langage Et Métaphores Naturelles : Paradigmes Ou Écueils Pour Construire Un Discours Propre Au Sud ?, Cécile Chapon

Artl@s Bulletin

Human Capacity Building In Africa – The Birs Model, Kari Clase, Abigail Ekeigwe, Zita Ekeocha, Stephen R. Byrn, Paddy Shivanand Sep 2019

Human Capacity Building In Africa – The Birs Model, Kari Clase, Abigail Ekeigwe, Zita Ekeocha, Stephen R. Byrn, Paddy Shivanand

BIRS Faculty and Staff Creative Materials

Human capacity sufficiency and sustenance in regulatory science is a key factor for harmonization and an identified issue in the harmonization process specifically in Africa. The human factor is the linchpin for progress----there can be no working system without human capacity. Harmonization depends upon education that motivates and prepares individuals for leadership that subsequently fuels the profession.

This paper proposes that one of the root causes is lack of sufficient institutions in Africa providing education in regulatory sciences and introduces the Biotechnology Innovation and Regulatory Sciences (BIRS) program model. This education model began with the IPAT program and evolved into …

Sound Quality Evaluation Of Refrigerated Truck Noise, Weonchan Sung, Patricia Davies, J Stuart Bolton Sep 2019

Sound Quality Evaluation Of Refrigerated Truck Noise, Weonchan Sung, Patricia Davies, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

Noise from refrigeration units on trucks can be a problem, particularly when the trucks are parked near residences. The development of a sound evaluation method that takes into account the strength of all sound attributes affecting people’s responses, including level, is described here. Such a model, coupled with a sound prediction methodology, would be helpful to unit designers who are concerned with optimizing a unit’s acoustical performance. The analysis of human subject responses to a variety of refrigerated truck sounds (in the third of a series of three subjective tests) is described. Sixty participants rated 25 recorded and digitally modified …

More Anatomically Realistic And Quantitative Models Of Pulmonary Surfactant Action And Alveolar Stability, Charles F. Babbs Sep 2019

More Anatomically Realistic And Quantitative Models Of Pulmonary Surfactant Action And Alveolar Stability, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

To explore basic mechanisms of action of pulmonary surfactant in preventing alveolar collapse, a first-principles analysis is done analyzing forces on the shared walls separating adjacent alveolar gas bubbles. The analysis holds for concave alveolar models with either rounded, dome-like surfaces or flat, box-like surfaces. The analysis also holds for neighboring alveoli of varying size and shape. Surfactant action is characterized by two parameters describing reduction in surface tension vs. log concentration. The resulting equations describe the net pressure tending to shift the shared position of a wall, as a function of the perturbation from a balanced initial state. In …

Memories Of Life On The Farm: Through The Lens Of Pioneer Photographer J. C. Allen, Frederick Whitford, Neal Harmeyer Sep 2019

Memories Of Life On The Farm: Through The Lens Of Pioneer Photographer J. C. Allen, Frederick Whitford, Neal Harmeyer

Purdue University Press Book Previews

John Calvin Allen, professionally known as J. C., worked as a photographer for Purdue University from 1909-1952, and operated his own photography business until his death in 1976. The J. C. Allen photographs represent an historical account of the transition from pioneer practices to scientific methodologies in agriculture and rural communities. During this major transitional period for agriculture, tractors replaced horses, hybrid corn supplanted open-pollinated corn, and soybeans changed from a novelty crop to regular rotation on most farms. During this time, purebred animals with better genetic pedigrees replaced run-of-the-mill livestock, and systematic disease prevention in cattle, swine, and poultry …

Imagining Afghanistan: Global Fiction And Film Of The 9/11 Wars, Alla Ivanchikova Sep 2019

Imagining Afghanistan: Global Fiction And Film Of The 9/11 Wars, Alla Ivanchikova

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Imagining Afghanistan examines how Afghanistan has been imagined in literary and visual texts that were published after the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent U.S.-led invasion—the era that propelled Afghanistan into the center of global media visibility. Through an analysis of fiction, graphic novels, memoirs, drama, and film, the book demonstrates that writing and screening “Afghanistan” has become a conduit for understanding our shared post-9/11 condition. “Afghanistan” serves as a lens through which contemporary cultural producers contend with the moral ambiguities of twenty-first-century humanitarianism, interpret the legacy of the Cold War, debate the role of the U.S. in the rise of …

Transforming Acquisitions And Collection Services: Perspectives On Collaboration Within And Across Libraries, Michelle Flinchbaugh, Chuck Thomas, Rob Tench, Vicki Sipe, Robin Barnard Moskal, Lynda A. Aldana, Erica A. Owusu Sep 2019

Transforming Acquisitions And Collection Services: Perspectives On Collaboration Within And Across Libraries, Michelle Flinchbaugh, Chuck Thomas, Rob Tench, Vicki Sipe, Robin Barnard Moskal, Lynda A. Aldana, Erica A. Owusu

Purdue University Press Book Previews

This book explores ways in which libraries can reach new levels of service, quality, and efficiency while minimizing cost by collaborating in acquisitions. In consortial acquisitions, a number of libraries work together, usually in an existing library consortia, to leverage size to support acquisitions in each individual library. In cross-functional acquisitions, acquisitions collaborates to support other library functions. For the library acquisitions manager, technical services manager, or the library director, awareness of different options for effective consortial and cross-functional acquisitions allows for the optimization of staff and resources to reach goals. This work presents those options in the form of …

The Role Of Using Formative Assessments In Problem-Based Learning: A Health Sciences Education Perspective, Kristi W. Kelley, Julaine M. Fowlin, Andrew A. Tawfik, Max C. Anderson

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Practitioners in the field of pharmacy are often confronted with ill-structured problems. Specifically, pharmacists are tasked with making patient-specific recommendations that are both safe and effective, which requires combining knowledge from the biomedical, behavioral, and pharmaceutical sciences. Given the dynamic nature of pharmacy as a profession, the field has begun to explore learning strategies that go beyond mere content coverage to strategies that better support higher-order learning outcomes. One of these approaches is problem-based learning (PBL). While studies have focused on how to support PBL to improve learning outcomes, the role of assessment is often overlooked. Further exploration is thus …

Project-Based Learning (Pjbl) In Three Southeastern Public Schools: Academic, Behavioral, And Social-Emotional Outcomes, Brooke T. Culclasure, Kyle C. Longest, Troy M. Terry

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Project-based learning (PjBL) as a PK–12 instructional model is growing nationwide. PjBL is seen as a mechanism to deliver academic content in a more engaging way for students and in a way that stresses the development of skills critical to success in the 21st-century workforce. Because of its increasing popularity and the disparate breadth of research around the model, a study of PjBL in three southeastern public schools was conducted during academic years 2015–2016 and 2016–2017. This study attempted to better understand how PjBL was implemented in schools and to explore the impact of PjBL on schools, teachers, and students. …

The Impact Of Pbl As A Stem School Reform Model, Michael R. L. Odell, Teresa J. Kennedy, Eric Stocks

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Project/problem-based learning (PBL) can provide an effective model for school reform when implemented with fidelity. In the report, Rising Above the Gathering Storm, it was recommended that if the U.S. is to remain competitive in the 21st-century economy, there must be a serious effort to “enlarge the pipeline of students who are prepared to enter college and graduate with a degree in STEM” (National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, & Institute of Medicine, 2007, p. 6). The report included the recommendation that states develop statewide specialty STEM high schools (National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, …

Recursive Reflective Reports: Embedded Assessment In Pbl Courses For Second Language Teacher Education, Cynthia A. Caswell

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This conceptual article begins with a general definition of reflection and the soft skills of PBL: collaboration, agency, and metacognition. Then it presents theoretical frameworks for reflection from second language teacher education (SLTE) (Farrell, 2015; Pennington & Richards, 2016) and illustrates six types of reflection with examples from the field of SLTE. The article features a reflective self- and peer-assessment instrument, utilized in a graduate SLTE program. The standard yet flexible template of the reflective teaching report (RTR) allows these teacher educators to interact with their students’ development in the soft skills and the content of the SLTE knowledge base. …

Performance Assessment Practice As Professional Learning, Vanessa Svihla, Tim Kubik, Tori Stevens-Shauger Aug 2019

Performance Assessment Practice As Professional Learning, Vanessa Svihla, Tim Kubik, Tori Stevens-Shauger

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

While performance assessment (PA) is well aligned to project-based learning (PjBL), teachers find it challenging to design and implement PA that is faithful to the authentic context of their projects and viewed externally as rigorous. In contrast to standardizing PA tasks — thereby diminishing authenticity — we formed a research-practice partnership (Coburn, Penuel, & Geil, 2013) that developed and used a “shell” to guide teachers in planning, implementing, and engaging in rigorous dialogues that evaluate and elevate PA practice across four PjBL schools. Drawing from analysis of artifacts and audio-recorded professional development sessions, we highlight how the effort to standardize …

We are examining the impact of a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) at a land-grant, Hispanic-serving institution in the southwestern United States. Students in our CURE completed one or two extended research projects over a single semester. Our CURE enrolled a high proportion of underrepresented minority students (70.3%), including 60.2% Hispanic students. One year after CURE completion, 31.5% of CURE students had graduated with a STEM degree, and 54.3% were enrolled in a STEM major. Pre- and postcourse surveys of indicators of persistence including scientific self-efficacy, scientific identity, valuing scientific community objectives, and intention to persist showed positive shifts. Impacts …

Collision Avoidance With Deep Reinforcement Learning, Raymond C. Li, Jun Min Ahn, Zachary Tyler Esteron, Qiyin Hong Aug 2019

Collision Avoidance With Deep Reinforcement Learning, Raymond C. Li, Jun Min Ahn, Zachary Tyler Esteron, Qiyin Hong

Purdue Undergraduate Research Conference

In the past decade, learning algorithms developed to play video games better than humans have become more common. Google’s DeepMind Technologies developed learning algorithms that could play Atari video games and also demonstrated their famous AlphaGo algorithm which outperformed professional Go players. However, little research has been done on learning algorithms developed to complete the particularly difficult single-player games. In particular, much further research could be done on developing learning algorithms for mechanically challenging games such as “bullet hell” games. We believe that agents could learn to efficiently evade obstacles utilizing deep reinforcement learning. The purpose of this study is …

Advanced Glycation End-Products Suppress Mitochondrial Function And Proliferative Capacity Of Achilles Tendon-Derived Fibroblasts, Shivan H. Patel, Feng Yue, Shannon K. Saw, Rachel Foguth, Jason R. Cannon, Jonathan H. Shannahan, Shihuan Kuang, Arman Sabbaghi, Chad C. Carroll

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Debilitating cases of tendon pain and degeneration affect the majority of diabetic individuals. The high rate of tendon degeneration persists even when glucose levels are well controlled, suggesting that other mechanisms may drive tendon degeneration in diabetic patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of advanced glycation end-products on tendon fibroblasts to further our mechanistic understanding of the development and progression of diabetic tendinopathy. We proposed that advanced glycation end-products would induce limitations to mitochondrial function and proliferative capacity in tendon-derived fibroblasts, restricting their ability to maintain biosynthesis of tendon extracellular matrix. Using an in-vitro cell …

Digital Signal Processing For Laser Printer Noise Source Detection And Identification, Yutong Xue, Nicholas Kim, Xihui Wang, Jan Allebach, J Stuart Bolton, George Chiu, Patricia Davies, Katy Ferguson, David Kaisle, Mark Shaw

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

Presented here is the description of a software-based noise source detector that was developed to simplify the printing noise source identification process. The typical noise sources studied here were high frequency, stick-slip (squeaking) noises associated with rollers along the paper path. The detector was built by combining several digital signal processing procedures to first create a tone detector, and then to calculate the modulation spectrum of the tone. The latter is particularly important because it has been found that features appearing in the modulation spectrum can be directly associated with the rotational speed of various components in the printer; this …

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Granulomas can “mimic” gliomas on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in human patients. The goal of this retrospective study was to report canine brain granulomas that were consistent with glioma based upon MRI, report their histologic diagnosis, and identify MRI criteria that might be useful to distinguish granuloma from glioma. Ten granulomas, initially suspected to be glioma based on MRI, were ultimately diagnosed as granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis (n = 5), infectious granulomas (n = 3) or other meningoencephalitis (n = 2). Age was 1.6–15.0 years and two dogs were brachycephalic breeds. MRI characteristics overlapping with glioma included intra-axial, heterogeneous, …

Parthenocarpic Cucumber Cultivar Evaluation In High-Tunnel Production, Wenjing Guan, Elizabeth Maynard, Bronwyn Aly, Julie Zakes, Dan Egel, Laura Ingwell Aug 2019

Parthenocarpic Cucumber Cultivar Evaluation In High-Tunnel Production, Wenjing Guan, Elizabeth Maynard, Bronwyn Aly, Julie Zakes, Dan Egel, Laura Ingwell

Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture Faculty Publications

Fresh-consumed parthenocarpic cucumbers (Cucumis sativus) are a popular and high-value crop sold in local food markets. The parthenocarpic plant characteristics and climbing growth habit make cucumbers an ideal crop for high-tunnel production. Major types of parthenocarpic cucumbers include Beit alpha and mini, Dutch greenhouse, American slicer, and Japanese. Information regarding yield performance, plant growth, and disease resistance of the four types grown in high-tunnel conditions is limited. In this study, 16 parthenocarpic cucumber cultivars from the four major types were evaluated in high tunnels at three locations in Indiana and Illinois during Spring 2018. Plants were pruned to …

Near-Field Acoustical Holography Incorporating Compressive Sensing, Tongyang Shi, Weimin Thor, J Stuart Bolton Aug 2019

Near-Field Acoustical Holography Incorporating Compressive Sensing, Tongyang Shi, Weimin Thor, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

To identify sound source locations by using Near-field Acoustical Holography (NAH), a large number of microphone measurements is generally required in order to cover the source region and to ensure a sufficiently high spatial sampling rate. It may be the case that hundreds of microphones are required, so such measurements are economically expensive, which has limited the industrial application of NAH to the identification of sound source locations. Recently, however, it has been shown possible to identify concentrated sound sources with a limited number of microphone measurements based on Compressive Sampling theory. In the present work, a loudspeaker was used …

Source Identification Of A Bladeless Fan By Using Sonah In Cylindrical Coordinates, Weimin Thor, J Stuart Bolton, Tongyang Shi Aug 2019

Source Identification Of A Bladeless Fan By Using Sonah In Cylindrical Coordinates, Weimin Thor, J Stuart Bolton, Tongyang Shi

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

Near-field acoustical holography (NAH) is conventionally used to visualize sound fields in a three-dimensional space based on sound pressure measurements conducted on a surface close to a noise source. Traditional Fourier-based acoustical holography procedures require the use of a large microphone array setup to avoid spatial truncation effects: that means it is necessary that the array be large enough so that the sound pressure level measured at the edges of the array is significantly lower than that at the peak locations. To avoid the need to use large microphone arrays, a method referred to as statistically optimized near-field acoustical holography …

Study On Thecone Programming Reformulation Of Active Noise Control Filter Design In The Frequency Domain, Yongjie Zhuang, Yangfan Liu Aug 2019

Study On Thecone Programming Reformulation Of Active Noise Control Filter Design In The Frequency Domain, Yongjie Zhuang, Yangfan Liu

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

In the practice of active noise control, the control filter can be designed in either the time domain or the frequency domain. Compared with the former method category, it is more convenient to use frequency-domain methods to apply constraints such as stability, robustness, disturbance enhancement, input limit of loudspeakers, etc. Better noise reduction performance can usually be achieved by frequency-domain design as well. However, the computational complexity of designing a filter in the frequency domain is usually significant, especially for multichannel systems with multiple constraints. This is one of the challenges of using frequency-domain design in practical applications. In this …

A Laboratory Procedure For Measuring The Dispersion Characteristics Of Loaded Tires, Won Hong Choi, J Stuart Bolton, Dan Haakenson, Matthew Black Aug 2019

A Laboratory Procedure For Measuring The Dispersion Characteristics Of Loaded Tires, Won Hong Choi, J Stuart Bolton, Dan Haakenson, Matthew Black

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

It is of interest to be able to measure the wave dispersion characteristics of tires, since that information can be used to identify the types and speeds of waves propagating within them. The latter information can be used, for example, to identify the waves that preferentially radiate sound or create structure-borne disturbances that can propagate into the vehicle interior. This type of measurement is usually performed by driving an unloaded tire at one point on its treadband with a shaker, and then measuring the resulting radial vibration around the tire circumference by using a laser vibrometer. The latter spatial data …

Poro-Elastic Materials And The Control Of Low Frequency Sound, J Stuart Bolton Aug 2019

Poro-Elastic Materials And The Control Of Low Frequency Sound, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

In the introductory sections of active noise control and metamaterial articles, it is often said that “conventional”, i.e., poro-elastic materials such as foams and fibrous media, do not work well at low frequencies. While that observation may be true for the simplest treatments, e.g., a single layer of a homogeneous, limp fibrous layer, there are many cases in which excellent weight and cost-effective acoustical treatments can be realized by using poro-elastic media. The first example involves the serendipitous discovery of a configuration that allows a 25 mm thick foam layer to provide effective absorption at 300 Hz, at a surface …
