Two-Phase Flow Morphology And Local Wall Temperatures In High-Aspect-Ratio Manifold Microchannels, K. P. Drummond, J. A. Weibel, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
Manifold microchannel heat sinks can dissipate high heat fluxes at moderate pressure drops, especially during two-phase operation. High-aspect-ratio microchannels afford a large enhancement in heat transfer area; however, the flow morphology in manifold microchannels during two-phase operation, as well as the resulting thermal performance, are not well understood. In this work, a single manifold microchan- nel representing a repeating unit in a heat sink is fabricated in silicon with a bonded glass viewing window. Samples of different channel lengths (750 μm and 1500 μm) and depths (125 μm, 250 μm, and 10 0 0 μm) are considered; channel and fin …

Biomechanical Models Of Cough Sounds In Pneumonia: Mechanisms Underlying Sound-Based Diagnosis In Low-Resource Settings, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers
Objective. This paper describes a theoretical study of physical mechanisms underlying the generation of cough sounds and the expected differences in such sounds caused by anatomically localized pneumonia. Methods. A fresh, first-principles, physics-based analysis is done, describing radial motion of bronchi after sudden decompression of intrathoracic pressure during the early and middle phases of a cough. The mechanical model of each bronchus is a spring-mass-damper system, in which the spring force comes from elastic properties of the bronchial wall, the mass term comes from the bronchial wall and any surrounding fluid or pus in pneumonia, and the damping term comes …

Discovering a presumably lost reel of film is an exhilarating moment for moving image archivists and film historians contributing to and studying the overall preservation of cultural heritage. When discovered, one’s most prominent inclination is to spread the news and communicate the finding. In some cases, this may be one reel of many that were thought to be lost. In other cases, perhaps other reels from the same film have been discovered but in exist in different locations or even in various countries. The discovery also prompts a variety of questions and next steps: How can these reels be unified …

Quantitative research is an important tool in understanding library users; quantifiable data is objective and can be processed and analyzed in ways that bring about new insights. Unfortunately, it is better at telling us where and when than it is at telling us the whys. Our library, the Business, Engineering, Science, and Technology library at Miami University, did a headcount study to see how many people were using which rooms at what times of the day and night. There were many things we learned from that data, but in order to flesh it out and make it more of a …

Ground-level UV-B will stay at a high level in the next several decades and influence sweet potato growth and yield because of the remaining chlorofluorocarbons in the atmosphere. The study explored three UV-B (none, ambient, and elevated/projected) levels on three contrasting sweet potato cultivars (Beauregard, Hatteras, and Louisiana 1188) using sunlit plant growth chambers at Mississippi State University. The results showed that UV-B influenced three cultivars differently. Growth, photosynthetic rate, epidermal and leaf structure of Beauregard were negatively influenced under ambient and elevated UV-B. On the contrary, Hatteras was positively influenced, and Louisiana 1188 was influenced by elevated UV-B positively …

Membrane distillation (MD) has shown promise for concentrating a wide variety of brines, but the knowledge is limited on how different brines impact salt scaling, flux decline, and subsequent wetting. Furthermore, past studies have lacked critical details and analysis to enable a physical understanding, including the length of experiments, the inclusion of salt kinetics, impact of antiscalants, and variability between feed-water types. To address this gap, we examined the system performance, water recovery, scale formation, and saturation index of a lab-scale vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) in long-running test runs approaching 200 h. The tests provided a comparison of a variety …

The Dsm–5 Section Iii Personality Disorder Criterion A In Relation To Both Pathological And General Personality Traits., Chelsea E. Sleep, Brandon Weiss, Donald R. Lynam, Joshua D. Miller
Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications
Following the introduction of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM–5), section III alternative model of personality disorder, much of the empirical attention has been directed toward testing the performance of Criterion B (i.e., pathological traits). Much more recently, with the development of assessment tools related to Criterion A (i.e., personality impairment), a burgeoning literature base is forming for it as well. A closer look at the Criterion A component, however, reveals disagreements around its structure, discriminant validity, ability to distinguish between personality-based and nonpersonality-based forms of psychopathology, overlap between the two criteria, and incremental validity. …

Concrete Box Beam Risk Assessment And Mitigation: Volume 1—Evolution And Performance, Robert J. Frosch, Christopher S. Williams, Ryan T. Molley, Ryan T. Whelchel
JTRP Technical Reports
Adjacent box beam bridges have a history of poor long-term performance including premature deterioration and failures. Leaking joints between box beams allow chloride-laden water to migrate through the superstructure and initiate corrosion. The nature of this deterioration leads to uncertainty of the extent and effect of deterioration on structural behavior. Due to limitations in previous research and understanding of the strength of deteriorated box beam bridges, conservative assumptions are made for the assessment and load rating of these bridges. Furthermore, the design of new box beam bridges, which can offer an efficient and economical solution, is often discouraged due to …

Determining The Optimal Traffic Opening Timing Through An In-Situ Ndt Method For Concrete Early Age Properties, Yen-Fang Su, Guangshuai Han, Na (Luna) Lu
JTRP Technical Reports
Developing a reliable in-situ testing method to determine the strength of concrete for traffic opening is a critical need for INDOT, due to the fast-pace construction schedule exposes concrete pavements and/or structures undergoing a substantial loading conditions even at its early ages. Nevertheless, the current methods for determining traffic opening times are inefficient and expensive, often causing construction delays or cost overruns. To address this critical need, we propose to develop an in-situ nondestructive testing (NDT) method that enables an accurate and efficient understanding of early age properties of concrete using electromechanical impedance (EMI) method coupled with piezoelectric sensors.
