With the outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), came struggles and hardships that were not foreseen. One of these struggles was to maintain an adequate supply of medical equipment, medications, and other necessities to help protect individuals and communities. Proper hand hygiene is an important part of the response to COVID-19. Sanitizing and taking steps to prevent contraction of COVID-19 was a high priority and with the high demand, the availability of hand sanitizer was scare.
In March 2020, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a policy allowing pharmacists to temporarily compound alcohol-based hand sanitizer during the public …

Raising Awareness And Empowering Diverse Survivors: Addressing Mental And Physical Health Needs Among Lgbtqia+ Community Members Post-Sexual Assault, Daniel W. Oesterle, Leah Giorgini, Christopher Eckhardt
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
Experiences of sexual violence are commonplace among individuals within the LGBTQIA+ communities, with more than 63% of sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals experiencing victimization. Despite high rates of victimization, few individuals experiencing sexual assault seek services post-assault, with even fewer individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community accessing post-assault care. This is further exacerbated when considering the unmet treatment needs of sexual assault survivors and victims, where individuals commonly experience high rates of internalizing (i.e., post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety) and externalizing (i.e., substance use/misuse) symptoms for years after experiencing an assault. Although these experiences occur at alarming rates on college …

Hair Care Catered To You, Sarah Reynolds, Meg Sorg
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
People of color face barriers in healthcare every day, and my goal was to address one of these barriers. Healthcare settings stock products that are tailored for Caucasian hair and skin, so I wanted to add products targeted for Black patients' skin and hair. I added shampoo and lotion to the supply closet of Peyton Manning Children's Hospital as well as bonnets and durags for the patients to wrap their hair in to protect it while they sleep or rest. African American hair and skin requires different care. This is something that often goes unnoticed by healthcare professionals, and I …

The Acoustical Properties Of Air Saturated Aerogel Powders, Yutong Xue, J Stuart Bolton, Hasina Begum, Kirill Horoshenkov
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
There is a general lack of understanding of the acoustical behaviour of air-saturated aerogel powders in the audible frequency range. It is unclear what physical processes control the acoustic absorption and /or attenuation mechanisms in a very light, loose granular mix in which the grain diameter is comparable to a micron. This work attempts to fit a Biot-type viscoelastic model to predict the absorption coefficient of two aerogel powder mixes with the particle diameter in the range of 1 - 40 microns. it is shown that these materials behave like a highly flexible, viscoelastic layer. It is found that the …

The Acoustic Cavity Mode And The Effects Of Modal Coupling And Rotation On Force Transmission To The Hub, Rui Cao, Won Hong Choi, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Concerns about tire noise radiation arise partly from city traffic planning, environmental protection and pedestrian safety standpoints, while from the vehicle passengers' perspective, noise transmitted to the vehicle interior is more important. It is the latter concern that is addressed in this presentation. In particular, a tire’s internal, acoustical cavity resonance contributes significantly to tire-related structure-borne noise near 200 Hz, and it can easily be perceived by passengers. That acoustic mode can be suppressed by adding an absorptive lining to the tire’s interior. However, apart from the additional cost and weight of such tires, there are concerns with durability, and …

Future Trends In Noise Control Technology, J Stuart Bolton
Future Trends In Noise Control Technology, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Although acoustics plays an important role in noise control, noise control is arguably more difficult than acoustics owing to the constraints that are usually imposed on noise control solutions by manufacturers. That is, ideally, noise control solutions should occupy no space, weigh nothing, cost nothing, not impact the operation of the device being treated, and remain effective for twenty years without maintenance. Hence, identifying effective noise control solutions is a challenging, multidimensional problem. In this presentation, future trends and opportunities in noise control will be highlighted in four categories: targets, measurement techniques, predictive tools, and noise control methods and materials.
