Future Trends In Noise Control Materials: Architectured To Nano, J Stuart Bolton
Future Trends In Noise Control Materials: Architectured To Nano, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Stuart Bolton, with Purdue University’s Ray W. Herrick Laboratories, presented keynote remarks about modern trends in noise control materials, from architectured to nano. He expressed some of his own views about important factors for consideration, and shared highlights from a spring 2021 Purdue symposium on poro-elastic materials. From a manufacturer’s perspective, cost is usually the most important factor associated with a noise control material, followed by safety, weight, volume, recyclability, and so-called “embedded energy,” with acoustical performance very low on the list. Cost-effectiveness is therefore a critical consideration, along with other factors such as efficiency in terms of space and …
Moralizing The Law: Lactating Workers And The Transformation Of Supervising Managers, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann
Moralizing The Law: Lactating Workers And The Transformation Of Supervising Managers, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann
Department of Sociology Faculty Publications
The Lactation at Work Law amended the Fair Labor Standards Act to mandate employer accommodation of employees’ breast milk expression. Interviews with employees, human resource specialists, and supervising managers in nine industries found that some organizations’ supervising managers, who initially perceived accommodations only as a legal mandate furthering managerial goals, over time changed to understanding lactation accommodations through a children’s-health lens that created morality-driven motivations for legal compliance–a “moralization of the law.” Educational discussions with lactating employees not only provided these supervising managers with insights into lactation at work, but also sensitized them to ethical issues surrounding lactation accommodations.

Why Do Early Mathematics Skills Predict Later Mathematics And Reading Achievement? The Role Of Executive Function, Dieuwer Ten Braak, Ragnhild Lenes, David J. Purpura, Sara A. Schmitt, Ingunn Størksen
Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
A robust association between young children’s early mathematical proficiency and later academic achievement is well established. Less is known about the mechanisms through which early mathematics skills may contribute to later mathematics and especially reading achievement. Using a parallel multiple mediator model, the current study investigated whether executive function (integration of working memory, inhibition, and cognitive flexibility) can explain the relations between early mathematics skills and elementary school mathematics and reading achievement. Data in this longitudinal study were collected from 243 children during the last year of early childhood education and care (kindergarten ages 5 and 6 years), 1 year …

Any effort to combat corruption can benefit from an examination of past and projected worldwide trends. In this paper, we forecast the level of corruption in countries by integrating artificial neural network modeling and time series analysis. The data were obtained from 113 countries from 2007 to 2017. The study is carried out at two levels: (a) the global level, where all countries are considered as a monolithic group; and (b) the cluster level, where countries are placed into groups based on their development-related attributes. For each cluster, we use the findings from our previous study on the cluster analysis …
Barriers And Motivators To Physical Activity Prior To Starting A Community-Based Walking Program, Elizabeth A. Richards, Stephanie Woodcox
Barriers And Motivators To Physical Activity Prior To Starting A Community-Based Walking Program, Elizabeth A. Richards, Stephanie Woodcox
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Despite the clear benefits of an active lifestyle, most American adults fail to meet physical activity (PA) guidelines. Because of its safety and ease, walking is a promising population-level strategy to increase PA. There is a need to further understand why adults do and do not participate in walking. This study provides a broader understanding of barriers and motivators of walking prior to starting a walking program. Four years of baseline data from a community-based walking program were analyzed (n = 1491). Descriptive statistics summarized participant characteristics, barriers, reinforcements, and current PA. Chi-square tests were used to assess differences in …
When Traditional Outreach Isn't Working: How To Reach Undergraduate Students, Jennifer Horne
When Traditional Outreach Isn't Working: How To Reach Undergraduate Students, Jennifer Horne
Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)
What is a library liaison to do when traditional outreach strategies aren’t working and you can't get buy-in by faculty for instruction sessions for undergraduates? This session will explore the alternative methods of outreach I used to try to “crack” the business school in the absence of in-class instruction opportunities, including a focus on connecting with college staff, direct communication with students through existing college communication channels, and targeted outreach to subsets of students, including international students.

Creating A Values Based Collections Evaluation Rubric, Heather A. Howard
Creating A Values Based Collections Evaluation Rubric, Heather A. Howard
Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)
As libraries and communities consider institutional values and ethical standards in the wake of 2020, we need to scrutinize how those values and standards connect with our collections decisions. Critical Librarianship is at the forefront of work being done by librarians across the country. Related to this concept, there is an existing body of literature about the contents of the collections themselves, with respect to issues like decolonization and open access, but little about the specific business relationships we maintain in order to acquire these collections. Are the values of our partners in the publishing ecosystem aligned with ours? What …

Representation Of Terror And Terrorism In Two Arab Films: Paradise Now (2005) By Hany Abu-Assad And Horses Of God (2012) By Nabil Ayouch, Mustapha Hamil
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Middle Eastern violence and terrorism are not novel subjects in world cinema, especially American cinema. The Arab or Muslim other in these films is always presented as someone who epitomises a culture of violence, directed mostly against innocent civilians. Against the backdrop of Hollywood’s stereotypical representation of Middle-Easterners as advocate of indiscriminate terror and terrorism, Arab filmmakers have turned in recent years to the representation of terror and religious extremism. Paradise Now (Abu Assad 2005) and Horses of God (Ayouch 2012) address the controversial issue of suicide bombing with the same motivation: to examine the choice of suicide bombing within …
Looking Back, Or Re-Visioning: Contemporary American Jewish Poets On “Lot’S Wife”, Anat Koplowitz-Breier
Looking Back, Or Re-Visioning: Contemporary American Jewish Poets On “Lot’S Wife”, Anat Koplowitz-Breier
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Although mentioned only twice in Genesis (19:17, 26), Lot’s wife has been a topic of much discussion amongst both traditional and modern commentators and exegetes. The traditional midrashim seek to explain why she chose to disregard the instructions she was given and the nature of her punishment. In doing so, they follow two principal directions, representing her a) negatively as a wicked sinner, a Sodomite who acted as such even before disobeying the divine decree not to look backwards—thus linking her disobedience with her intrinsic character (e.g., curious, greedy, inhospitable, faithless); or b) positively as a loving mother and daughter. …

Where Are The Women?: An Ecofeminist Reading Of William Golding’S Lord Of The Flies, Hawk Chang
Where Are The Women?: An Ecofeminist Reading Of William Golding’S Lord Of The Flies, Hawk Chang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
The absence of female characters and their voices in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies (1954) has been previously examined. On the surface, this fiction focuses on the struggle and survival of a group of boys who are left alone on a Pacific island against the background of nuclear warfare. The only presence of women in the story seems to be the aunt via a boy’s narration. However, when approaching the fiction through the lens of ecofeminism, we can find a range of feminized entities which are metaphorically embodied in the natural surroundings of the secluded island. The boys’ interactions …
Vulgarity As Springboard For High Art—A Comparative Study Of Vladimir Nabokov And Qian Zhongshu’S Notions Of Vulgarity, Derong Cao
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
The discussion of vulgarity features prominently in both Nabokov and Qian’s creative writing. In this essay, their notions of vulgarity will be compared and contrasted. Nabokov and Qian have surprisingly similar understandings of vulgarity. To be more specific, both identify pretense/ affectation and triteness/ mediocrity as its fundamental characteristics. Moreover, both authors believe that the quintessential feature of vulgarity lies in its downplay of individual consciousness. The two authors’ understandings of vulgarity also differ in major ways. Qian’s Fortress Besieged, though showing deep social and moral concerns, did not seem to suspect a direct causal link between vulgarity and …
Strange Genre-Related Loops In A Novel-Short Story: The Tension Between The Genres And Their Cultural Context, Orna Levin
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
The goal of the current study was to examine the strange genre-related loops in the novel The Short Story Master, by Maya Arad (2009), through the tension between the two genres represented in the text and their cultural contexts. The plot of the novel tells of the professional and personal crisis of the master of the short story, who failed in his mission to write a novel. The text hints to the reader that the central conflict that moves the plot along is neither romantic nor existential, but rather genre-related, and thus the entire work is a manifestation of …

‘Convicted Of Patricide?’: Robert Frost’S Nationalism In The Eyes Of Contemporary Arab-American Women Writers, Eman K. Mukattash
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Given the culturally expansive nature of the American literary tradition of today, the question of the relevance of Robert Frost’s poetry to the poetry of contemporary Arab-American women writers is an issue worth digging into. Writing almost one hundred years ago does not make Frost’s poetry out of date. Frost’s poetry is as relevant to today’s America as it has been to the America of his days. And this can be ascribed to the multiplicity of perspectives he presents in his poetry as he examines crucial questions lying at the core of America’s “grand narrative of national development.” (Westover 2004: …
Graphic Nonsense And Historical Trauma In Fred Chao’S Johnny Hiro, Jin Lee
Graphic Nonsense And Historical Trauma In Fred Chao’S Johnny Hiro, Jin Lee
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article introduces the concept of “graphic nonsense” to explain nonsense in Fred Chao’s graphic narrative, Johnny Hiro, which features figures of monster (Godzilla and King Kong) as well as real U.S. political figures (Michael Bloomberg and John P. O’Brien). Focusing on transpacific trauma, this article articulates a counter-history using Fredric Jameson’s terms to expose the process of silencing the other and “retextualizing” history. Although puzzling at first, if not silly at best, the nonsensical elements in the graphic narrative can prompt the reader to find out historical allusions in Godzilla and King Kong to make sense out of …

A Model Of Farm Transition Planning For The U.S. Plains, Garret Reed, Shannon Ferrell, Eric A. Devuyst, Rodney Jones
A Model Of Farm Transition Planning For The U.S. Plains, Garret Reed, Shannon Ferrell, Eric A. Devuyst, Rodney Jones
Journal of Applied Farm Economics
Farm transition planning continues to be a significant challenge for U.S. agricultural owner/producers. Past and ongoing research points to an aging farm population with little or no planning to transition farms to succeeding farming family members, despite documented goals of continued family ownership and operation. This study developed and analyzed alternative farm asset transition strategies using a representative farm for Oklahoma. The simulations considered equity issues, family living requirements, and cash flow pre- and post-transition. Strategies analyzed considered off-farm investments and life insurance tools to even bequests between an on-farm and an off-farm heir, and also modeled splitting inheritance into …
Determining The Accuracy Of Holstein Bull Semen Prices With A Two-Tier Efficiency Model, Loren W. Tauer
Determining The Accuracy Of Holstein Bull Semen Prices With A Two-Tier Efficiency Model, Loren W. Tauer
Journal of Applied Farm Economics
The pricing accuracy of dairy bull semen available for artificial insemination is investigated using a price model cast in terms of a two-tier efficiency model, which allows estimating an overprice and underprice given the net return the bull’s daughter is expected to contribute to the farm based upon the transmittable trait characteristics of a bull. The estimation produces statistically significant coefficients, including the coefficients for the overpricing and underpricing of the semen. The average estimate of overpricing is around 25%, and the average estimate of underpricing is around 33%. As expected, low semen prices tend to be underpriced and high …

The Cover Crop Seed Industry: An Indiana Case Study, John C. Tyndall, Adriana Valcu-Lisman, Melanie Bogert, Abigail Zobrodsky
Journal of Applied Farm Economics
Winter cover crops are plants used to protect soils during the period between the harvest and establishment of cash crops such as corn and soybeans, effectively providing farm fields with perennial cover. The total cost of cover crops varies considerably from site to site and year to year, yet the single costliest aspect of using cover crops is the cost of seed. Seed cost also tends to be the most volatile component of the cost of cover crop use, subject to complex supply dynamics associated with producing viable seed, storage capacity, and unpredictable regional demand. We conducted a survey of …
Farm Efficiency And Productivity Growth: The Effect Of Commodity Prices, Elizabeth Canales, Jason S. Bergtold, Allen Featherstone
Farm Efficiency And Productivity Growth: The Effect Of Commodity Prices, Elizabeth Canales, Jason S. Bergtold, Allen Featherstone
Journal of Applied Farm Economics
Crop prices can affect farm productivity through input- output decisions. This study assesses the relationship between crop prices and productivity changes among a sample of Kansas farms. The changes in total factor productivity are evaluated using a nonparametric approach with a Malmquist productivity index and potential drivers of technical efficiency and productivity change are analyzed. Farms with higher leverage and greater diversification are likely to be more efficient and experience productivity change. Lower productivity occurred during years with higher crop prices, suggesting that innovation is more likely to occur when margins are tight.

Financing Beef Cow Herd Building For Beginning Ranchers, Abby Shalekbriski, Eric A. Devuyst, Cheryl S. Devuyst, Roger Sahs, Matt Stockton, Katlin Ramy
Journal of Applied Farm Economics
Intensive capital requirements relative to cash flows available inhibit the entry of beginning producers into the cattle industry. Here, we propose and analyze a strategy for beginning ranchers to build a herd. Over a three-year cycle, new producers borrow cash needed to purchase 450- pound heifers in the first year, breed heifers, sell open heifers and bull calves, retain heifer replacements, rebreed the two- year-old cows, and eventually sell bred two-turning-three cows 27 months after the initial heifer purchase. The goal is to retain a group of debt-free heifers. Analyses conducted over 14 cycles of 27 months each across three …
