The nature of the Corn Blight Watch Experiment and available resources to conduct the experiment dictated that there be several centers of activity supporting the overall objectives. Mr. Robert MacDonald described in an attached paper the experiment overview and participants. Dr. Marvin Bauer described the corn blight problem. In other attached papers Mr. Richard Allen discussed the sampling model and ground data measurements program while Mr. Ronald Blilie presented the aircraft data acquisition for the experiment. Many results were obtained from an experiment as large as the Corn Blight Watch Experiment. This discussion will concentrate on results pertaining to the detection and assessment of the severity and extent of southern corn leaf blight in the Corn Belt area by ground observations, interpretation of color infrared photography, and machine analysis of multispectral scanner data.

The utilization of minimum distance classification methods in remote sensing problems, such as crop species identification, is considered. Minimum distance classifiers belong to a family of classifiers referred to as sample classifiers. In such classifiers the items that are classified are groups of measurement vectors (e.g. all measurement vectors from an agricultural field), rather than individual vectors as in more conventional vector classifiers.

Specifically in minimum distance classification a sample (i.e. group of vectors) is classified into the class whose known or estimated distribution most closely resembles the estimated distribution of the sample to be classified. The measure of resemblance …

ERTS-A was successfully launched to become ERTS-l on July 23, 1972. The sensors on board were utilized to collect image data over the U.S. for the first time two days l a t e r on Tuesday, July 25. An early analysis of a data set was conducted at Purdue/LARS in order to arrive at preliminary indications as quickly as possible about the operating characteristics and potential value of this satellite as a data gathering device.

A serious and unexpected epiphytotic of southern corn leaf blight reduced the nation's corn crop by 15 percent as a new race of this previously minor disease swept through the Southern and Corn Belt states during July and August, 1970. The disease appeared so suddenly and moved with such speed that accurate information on its extent and severity was not compiled until well after the end of the growing season.

In the summer of 1971 the Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing at Purdue University conducted a pioneering experiment in the application of remote sensing technology to a large scale earth resource surveillance problem. In 1970 a plant disease called the Southern Corn Leaf Blight infected large areas of corn production in the United States and it is estimated that total national corn production pas reduced by 15% due to this disease. During the past decade, many actual and potential applications for remote sensing technology have been determined. This past year has seen a tremendous amount of interest generated in the application of remote sensing to problem related to land-use. A key element in applying remote sensing to land-use studies involves accurate identification of basic and vegetative cover types.
