A Cluster-Oriented Analysis Of Multispectral Scanner Data, Paul E. Anuta Jan 1972

A Cluster-Oriented Analysis Of Multispectral Scanner Data, Paul E. Anuta

LARS Technical Reports

The standard procedure at LARS for classification analysis of aircraft scanner data has been to training samples (fields) based on the ground truth data and to use these directly or in a form subdivided via clustering as training for the computer. In this process the major emphasis is on defining class statistics which describe actual materials of interest as designated by the user. The approach assumes these materials are spectrally separable and classification is performed to test if this is true. In the approach described here the multispectral data is first clustered to determine what spectrally separable groups exist in …

A Three-Stage Sample Model For Remote Sensing Applications, Ludwig M. Eisgruber Jan 1972

A Three-Stage Sample Model For Remote Sensing Applications, Ludwig M. Eisgruber

LARS Technical Reports

Large-scale applications of remote sensing for the purpose of preparing crop estimates, natural resource inventories, disaster assessments, etc. for a given geographic region will, in general, involve questions of sampling, since complete coverage of the total geographic region and subsequent analysis of data collected with complete coverage appear technically and economically infeasible. This is true regardless of whether an aircraft, or a satellite is involved, and It applies equally to photography, multispectral measurements, radar, etc. Thus, even if remote sensing provided completely accurate data, estimates (of crop acreage, natural resources, extent of disaster, etc.) for the total region under study …

Potential Benefits Of Remote Sensing: Theoretical Framework And Empirical Estimate, Ludwig M. Eisgruber Jan 1972

Potential Benefits Of Remote Sensing: Theoretical Framework And Empirical Estimate, Ludwig M. Eisgruber

LARS Technical Reports

The use of public funds has always been subject to public scrutiny and political log-rolling, but the intensity of this public scrutiny has not been higher any time during the past several decades than it is now. Partly this is due to the less favorable economic situation. However, the more important factors are (a) more awareness of the many public projects (welfare, housing, nutrition, pollution, transportation, etc.) and (b) better methods of accounting for costs and estimating of benefits of such projects. Thus, this high degree of public scrutiny can be expected to persist and perhaps intensify.

Public scrutiny is …

Engineering Soils Mapping From Multispectral Imagery Using Automatic Classification Techniques, Terry R. West Jan 1972

Engineering Soils Mapping From Multispectral Imagery Using Automatic Classification Techniques, Terry R. West

LARS Technical Reports

Multispectral imagery collected over southeastern Pennsylvania by Willow Run Laboratories, University of Michigan, was analyzed at the Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing (LARS) using its current capabilities for automatic classification. The project involved the evaluation of imagery in thirteen discrete bands of the spectrum as a source of data on engineering soils. Detailed computer classifications of two 4-mile segments of the Pennsylvania flightline, each containing predominantly one parent soil material, were obtained. Classification accuracy as measured by training field and test field performance was in excess of 90%. Using these two segments as a basis, a computer-implemented map was …

Definition Of Spectrally Separable Classes For Soil Survey Research, J. E. Cipra, P. H. Swain, J. H. Gill, M. F. Baumgardner, S. J. Kristof Jan 1972

Definition Of Spectrally Separable Classes For Soil Survey Research, J. E. Cipra, P. H. Swain, J. H. Gill, M. F. Baumgardner, S. J. Kristof

LARS Technical Reports

Spectral classes defined by a Euclidean distance criterion have shown similarity to soil classes as mapped by the National Cooperative Soil Survey (local, state, and federal governments cooperating). However, two problems have occurred in past studies: 1) The number of spectral classes defined by the researcher is arbitrary. 2) Spectral properties of nonvegetated soils are modified by rainfall, cultivation, and other factors not directly related to the classes of interest for soil survey purposes.

This research outlines a procedure for defining spectral classes such that the differences between classes can be quantified. It also facilitates determination of a number of …

Calibration Of Aircraft Scanner Data Using Ground Reflectance Panels, Paul E. Anuta, William R. Simmons Jan 1972

Calibration Of Aircraft Scanner Data Using Ground Reflectance Panels, Paul E. Anuta, William R. Simmons

LARS Technical Reports

An experiment is described in which aircraft scanner data from calibrated reflectance panels in the scene was used to calibrate the scanner data for nearby targets. The method used permits reflectance calibration of scanner data for areas which are in environmental proximity to the reflectance panels. That is, the calibration is valid for areas receiving the same illumination, from the same sun angle and for the same aircraft altitude. Atmospheric condition changes, cloud cover changes, different sun angles, and other environmental factor changes will alter the calibration and render the panel reference parameters invalid. The method described here is experimental …

Measurement Of Available Soil Moisture, F. V. Schultz Jan 1972

Measurement Of Available Soil Moisture, F. V. Schultz

LARS Technical Reports

The following pages are the author's notes taken during 1969 and are devoted, in the main, to a discussion of methods for measuring the resistivity of soil. While this is not a satisfactory method for measuring soil moisture, the material was assembled before its shortcomings were appreciated and is documented here as a background to the study of soil moisture measurement as a function of depth. This material is derived from source material and has been printed to have this information available. It does not reflect the research and literature since that time, nor the present thinking of the author.

Moire Patterns And Two-Dimensional Aliasing In Line Scanner Data Acquisition Systems, C. D. Mcgillem, T. E. Riemer Jan 1972

Moire Patterns And Two-Dimensional Aliasing In Line Scanner Data Acquisition Systems, C. D. Mcgillem, T. E. Riemer

LARS Technical Reports

The basic mechanism underlying the generation of Moire patterns in line scanner data acquisition systems is examined. A general expression is developed in tern of typical system parameters for the reproduced image of such systems and the interaction of the image spectrum; the raster frequency and digital sampling frequency of the A/D conversion process are discussed and examples given. System design requirements for avoiding Moire pattern generation and two-dimensional aliasing are discussed.

Differentiating Elements Of The Soil-Vegetation Complex, M. F. Baumgardner Jan 1972

Differentiating Elements Of The Soil-Vegetation Complex, M. F. Baumgardner

LARS Technical Reports

One of the most exciting prospects in the application of remote sensing technology is that of identifying, characterizing, measuring, and mapping different elements of the soil-vegetation complex. Important elements in this complex include soil properties, plant species, and the conditions of both soils and plants.

Conjugate Point Determination In Multitemporal Data Overlay, Richard A. Emmert, Claire D. Mcgillem Jan 1972

Conjugate Point Determination In Multitemporal Data Overlay, Richard A. Emmert, Claire D. Mcgillem

LARS Technical Reports

The machine processing of spatially variant multitemporal data such as imagery obtained at different times requires that these data be in geometrical registration such that the analysis processor may obtain the datum for a specified ground resolution element in each of the sets of imagery being utilized for analysis.

Misregistration between corresponding subsets of imagery contains both a displacement and a geometrical distortion component, and the affine transformation is postulated to characterize this misregistration between data subsets. Search techniques utilizing the moduli of the Fourier Transforms of these data are developed for estimating the coefficients of geometrical distortion components of …

Determining Density Of Maize Canopy: Iii. Temporal Considerations, E. R. Stoner, M. F. Baumgardner, P. E. Anuta, J. E. Cipra

LARS Technical Reports

Multispectral scanner data were collected In two flights over ground cover plots near the Purdue University Agronomy Farm's Weather Station at an altitude of 305 m. Energy in eleven reflective wavelength bands from 0.46 to 2.6 µm was recorded by the scanner. A set of eight ground reflectance panels was in close proximity to the ground cover plots and was used to normalize the scanner data obtained on different dates. The ground reflectance panels were used to relate laboratory reflectance measurements to scanner response. Separate prediction equations were obtained for both flight dates for all eleven reflective wavelength bands of …

Spectra Of Normal And Nutrient-Deficient Maize Leaves, A. H. Al-Abbas, R. Barr, J. D. Hall, F. L. Crane, M. F. Baumgardner Jan 1972

Spectra Of Normal And Nutrient-Deficient Maize Leaves, A. H. Al-Abbas, R. Barr, J. D. Hall, F. L. Crane, M. F. Baumgardner

LARS Technical Reports

Reflectance, transmittance and absorptance spectral of "normal" and six types of nutrient-deficient (N, P, K, S, Mg, and Ca) maize (Zea mays L.) leaves were analyzed at 30 selected wavelengths from 500-2600 nm. The analysis of variance showed significant differences in reflectance, transmittance and absorptance in the visible wavelengths among leaf numbers 3, 4, and 5, among the seven treatments, and among the interactions of leaf number and treatments. In the infrared wavelengths only treatments produced significant differences.

The chlorophyll content of leaves was reduced in all nutrient deficient treatments. Percent moisture was increased in S-, Mg-, and N-deficiencies. Positive …

Determining Density Of Maize Canopy: I. Digitized Photography, E. R. Stoner, M. F. Baumgardner, P. H. Swain

LARS Technical Reports

This research was designed to study the relationship I between different densities of maize (Zea mays L.) canopies and the energy reflected by these canopies. Field plots were laid out, representing four growth stages of maize. Two plot locations were chosen, one on a dark soil and the other on a very light colored surface soil. Spectral and spatial data were obtained from color and color infrared photographs taken from a vertical distance of 10 m above the maize canopies. Estimates of ground cover were made from these photographs and were related to field measurements of leaf area index. Ground …
