Application Of Landsat Data On A Low Order Soil Survey In South Central Idaho, William D. Harrison Jan 1980

Application Of Landsat Data On A Low Order Soil Survey In South Central Idaho, William D. Harrison

LARS Symposia

Satellite imagery was obtained for approximately 1.2 million acres on the remote Great Rift Zone of the Central. Snake River Plain. Using an analytical technique, large-scale land patterns were determined by cluster analysis at a scale of 1:24,000. Field examination of previously selected cluster sample points was done to obtain a correlation of soil surfaces, miscellaneous land types and vegetation species to various reflectance values recorded by the satellite camera. Upon computer analysis of the cluster point sample data, a level of similarity was determined and classes selected for the major land and vegetation patterns. This data is currently being …

Computer-Based Soil Data Management System (Cosmas): Its Function And Use, T. Kosaki, K. Kyuma, H. Furukawa

LARS Symposia

The large amount of data accumulated in soil surveys should always be available for research and practical use in agriculture, rural planning, and so on. For this purpose, the data must be managed by a well-organized computer-based system. This paper describes the basic function and organization of the system (COSMAS) now under development by the authors.

The site description and horizon observation of a soil survey are written on a standardized card in numerical and letter codes. Both the location of the observation site and the boundaries of the general soil map in the coordinate system of the base map …

A Software System For The Digital Enhancement And Classification Of Multiemulsion Photographic Data, James Deigan, John Szajgin, Paul Bruns, Kurt Olson

LARS Symposia

A software system for the digital enhancement and classification of multiemulsion photographic data has been developed utilizing the University of New Hampshire's DECsystem-10. Input is from high altitude color infrared photography scanned by a high resolution rotating drum microdensitometer. The digitizing process utilizes color separation filters to measure optical densities from each film emulsion layer. The analysis software is generalized, and with little modification will accept and process other multi-spectral data, such as that of Landsat.

Subscenes of interest are extracted from the raw data files on magnetic tape and written out as disk Piles for easy access. Preprocessing methods …

Mapping Alpine Soils Using Color Positive And Color Infrared Photographs, Scott Burns Jan 1980

Mapping Alpine Soils Using Color Positive And Color Infrared Photographs, Scott Burns

LARS Symposia

During a soil survey of the Indian Peaks area of the Colorado Front Range, it was found that large scale color positive photographs taken in the autumn were extremely useful for mapping alpine soils. Smaller scale color infrared photos were also helpful for delineation of mapping units. The soil mapping units were deduced on the basis of landforms and snow accumulation which is reflected in patterns of vegetational communities.

A small scale soil survey (1:250,000) was carried out in Southern Spain with the aid of Landsat MSS images and medium scale aerial photographs. One of the objectives of the project was to give a quantitative of the maps resulting from the interpretation of the two types of imagery with a view to testing the reliability of the soil boundaries interpreted from the Landsat imagery, using the API soil map as the standard.

The maps were purposely prepared in the following stages in order to facilitate comparison:

Visual interpretation of black and white prints and color composites of a spring …

New Opportunities In Soil Survey For Remote Sensing, Raymond Daniels Jan 1980

New Opportunities In Soil Survey For Remote Sensing, Raymond Daniels

LARS Symposia

The basic problem in any field survey is to delineate bodies of similar objects and to make sure that the boundaries between map units are accurate and meaningful. Remotely sensed data cannot replace on-site investigations in soil surveys because the same color patterns, reflectance values, etc., do not always relate to the same kind of soil, even in a local survey area. But remotely sensed data is an extremely valuable tool in extending on-site observations and in locating and extending the boundaries between many map units. Field scientists should have ready access to maps of various scales and origin to …

Digital Microdensitometric Analysis Of Aerial Photographic Imagery For Detailed Soils Mapping, T. H. Mace Jan 1980

Digital Microdensitometric Analysis Of Aerial Photographic Imagery For Detailed Soils Mapping, T. H. Mace

LARS Symposia

Much of the agricultural region of the United States is still not mapped with a modern soil survey. A need exists to provide tools which will both expedite the soil survey and place the survey maps in a digital form for implementation in computer data banks. Computer-assisted interpretation of scanned aerial photography may provide an intermediate product which may be used by soil surveyors to more rapidly and accurately delineate boundaries between soil polypedons. Moreover, the resulting raster format map may be easily encoded into data banks for use in a general land records system. Output maps from such a …

The Methodology Of Ciat's Land Resource Study Of Tropical America, Thomas T. Cochrane Jan 1980

The Methodology Of Ciat's Land Resource Study Of Tropical America, Thomas T. Cochrane

LARS Symposia

CIAT is carrying out an agricultural land resource evaluation of Tropical America to create a base for the effective development and transfer of germplasm oriented technology. The study started in mid-1977 and now covers 850 million ha. It reduces land information to a common base in terms of land systems defined as repetitive patterns of climate, landscape and soils. These are delineated directly onto satellite and side-looking radar imagery. Within land systems, soils are separately described in terms of the major landscape topographical facets.

Once the land resource information is summarized, it is recorded as a computerized data storage, retrieval …

Use Of Landsat Digital Data To Assist In Mapping Soils On Arizona Rangelands, Emil H. Horvath, Donald F. Post, Walter M. Lucas, Richard A. Weismiller

LARS Symposia

The outline and results of more than three years of field and laboratory studies are presented. The work was done in cooperation with the Soil Conservation Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Forest Service. Spectral maps generated from Landsat satellite data were used to aid in soil and vegetation surveys of five sites in southeastern Arizona. The sites are rangeland with varied physiography and relief, but generally sparse vegetation. It was found that spectral maps show a very positive correlation with grey tones or color patterns on photographs, and can be an excellent auxiliary tool for locating boundaries …

Computer Generated Interpretive Soil Maps From Soil Survey Data, S. G. Sykes, G. W. Petersen

LARS Symposia

To facilitate production of interpretive soil maps, computer software has been developed to interface soil boundaries with soil property data. Three Huntington County, Pennsylvania, Soil Survey maps, covering a total of 115 sq. km. at a scale of 1:20,000, were used as a test area. Soil boundaries and mapping unit centroids were digitized using a Tektronix 4954 graphics tablet. Mapping unit symbols were then appended to the centroid data and interfaced with soil property and other data supplied by the Soil Conservation Service.

Software was written for line segment cleaning, polygon processing, and final graphic display. A polygon processing program …

Calculation Of Probability Of Correct Classification For Two-Class Gaussian Classifiers With Arbitrary Hyperquadratic Decision Boundaries, Arthur G. Wacker, Talaat S. El-Sheikh Jan 1980

Calculation Of Probability Of Correct Classification For Two-Class Gaussian Classifiers With Arbitrary Hyperquadratic Decision Boundaries, Arthur G. Wacker, Talaat S. El-Sheikh

LARS Symposia

In this paper a technique is developed in order to numerically calculate the hyper-volume under a multidimensional Gaussian function over a region of the space defined by an arbitrary hyper-quadratic boundary. The technique is a modified version of the technique developed by Fukunaga and rile. The latter technique can be used only if the hyper-quadratic boundary results from the intersection of the Gaussian function, under which the hyper-volume is being calculated, with some other Gaussian function as opposed to an arbitrary hyper-quadratic boundary.

A practical problem in which the hyper-volume calculation mentioned above is of interest arises in statistical pattern …

Change Vector Analysis: An Approach For Detecting Forest Changes With Landsat, William A. Malila Jan 1980

Change Vector Analysis: An Approach For Detecting Forest Changes With Landsat, William A. Malila

LARS Symposia

Periodic multiresource surveys and effective management of forest resources would be facilitated by capabilities for accurate detection of disturbances and other changes in land cover. Current techniques are not as effective and efficient as desired. This paper describes a recently developed digital method for change detection using multidate Landsat data. The method employs calculation of spectral change vectors from two different dates, prompting its name -- Change Vector Analysis. The concept and a stratification procedure are described and their features are compared to other approaches. An implementation was tested that utilizes a linear transformation of Landsat data channels and spatial-spectral …

Variability Of Reflectance Measurements Due To The Interaction Of Row Azimuth And Solar Illuminati On Angle, J. C. Kollenkark, V. C. Vanderbilt, C. S. T. Daughtry

LARS Symposia

Pronounced effects on the reflective response of a crop canopy due to changes in solar azimuth and row azimuth angle have been noted on soybeans planted in wide rows. Understanding the interaction between row azimuth and illumination direction on the crop canopy spectral response is necessary in order to utilize effectively the spectral data collected on row crops.

The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of rows and row direction on the reflective response of a soybean canopy as a function of solar azimuth and zenith angles. Data were acquired over eleven plots in 1979. One plot …

Texture Edge Detection By Propagation And Shrinking, Luciano V. Dutra, Nelson D. A. Mascarenhas Jan 1980

Texture Edge Detection By Propagation And Shrinking, Luciano V. Dutra, Nelson D. A. Mascarenhas

LARS Symposia

The problem of detecting edges between differently textured regions is important in the process of segmentation of remotely sensed images. However, the concept of texture is difficult to be precisely defined and there seems to be no unique way to characterize texture. One possible approach is through the use of edge detection algorithms and i n these terms texture is conceived as edgeness per unit area. Regions that possess a wide variation in tone will be characterized by a high concentration of local edges and the opposite is true for smooth regions.

The algorithm for texture edge detection that is …

Radar Image Preprocessing, Victor S. Frost, Josephine A. Stiles, Julian C. Holtzman, D. N. Held Jan 1980

Radar Image Preprocessing, Victor S. Frost, Josephine A. Stiles, Julian C. Holtzman, D. N. Held

LARS Symposia

Standard image processing techniques are not applicable to radar images because of the coherent nature of the sensor. Therefore there is a need to develop preprocessing techniques for radar images which will then allow these standard methods to be applied. A random field model for radar image data is developed. This model describes the image data as the result of a multiplicative-convolved process. Standard techniques, those based on additive noise and homomorphic processing are not directly applicable to this class of sensor data. Therefore, a minimum mean square error (MMSE) filter was designed to treat this class of sensor data. …
