Automatic Processing Of Computer Compatible Tapes With Data From Multispectral Scanners Installed In Landsat Satellites, Norberto Scquizzato
LARS Symposia
STAI is the Spanish acronym for the digital data analysis system for information processing from Multispectral sensors of LANDSAT satellites, or, from the Multispectral Multiband Scanner System (Sistema Multiespectral para Obtencion de Informacion - SAMPOI) which the National Commission on Space Research (Argentine Republic) has installed at the Vicente Lopez Teleobservation Center (Centro de Teleobservacidn Vicente Lopez).
The STAI can be included among the digital processing systems called as interactive, having a great input and output diversification, but also having pre-processing capacity since it can convert HDDT, High Density Digital Tapes, from the SAMPOI Scanner into CCT, Computer Compatible Tapes.

Mapping Growing Conditions Of Crops From Landsat Data, P. Chagarlamudi, J. S. Schubert, A. R. Mack
LARS Symposia
An automatic method of mapping crop growing conditions from Landsat data has been developed. The method uses only current Landsat data and yield models derived from historical Landsat and crop phenology data. These models have been developed for spring and winter wheat in the Northern Hemisphere environment. The maps are useful to marketing, international service and relief organizations in estimating domestic and foreign yields of major crops.
Growing conditions of crops are often evaluated by ground observation of the density of plants in grain fields. Landsat data were used in this study to estimate these densities. The method is based …

Investigated area covers basalt lava flows in the Big Desert Area and surroundings, Landsat data collected August 23, 1978, covering the area roughly from 112°45' to 114°00' west and 43°00' to 43°45' north was used for the analysis.
To facilitate computer analysis procedures, the area was divided into two equal parts: eastern and western, A systematic procedure was used to sample and cluster data representing 2% of the area. The resulting cluster classes were merged until the divergences between classes were generally greater than 1500. This resulted in 22 and 19 separable spectral classes for the eastern and western parts, …

With the increasing amount of data made available from Landsat there is a clear need for an integrated method of soil mapping in which these data can be exploited to provide valuable information for the various stages of conventional soil mapping:
- preliminary study
- detail mapping
- verification of the results of photo-interpretation
- updating of soil map by temporal study
A joint research study was initiated between the Scientific Center of IBM France and IRAT, the Tropical Agriculture Research Institute to investigate these possible contributions.

Soil Taxometrics: Results From A West-German Data Bank, J. Lamp
LARS Symposia
The terms of general soil classification systems serve within soil information systems not only as main criteria for storing and cross referencing data, The classes or taxons of soil classification may also be checked and improved by taxometric evaluations on data of the information system itself.
By means of a soil data bank of about 2000 profiles and 10,000 horizons, which were collected from West-German institutions of soil survey, results were evaluated by various taxometric methods.

The approach to development involves four stages: (1) analysis, ( 2) pilot development, ( 3) prototype development, and (4) implementation. In the analysis phase, soil information users were interviewed to determine their information needs. A pilot SRIS has been developed utilizing five components: a soil map unit database, soil interpretation database, Pedon Characterization database, climatology database, and a range database. The pilot is controlled by SYSTEM 2000, a database management system. This system features interactive query and response, and a …
Landsat As A Data Source In The Analysis Of Soil Salinization On The Upper Nile, Daniel Cooper, Jerry C. Coiner
Landsat As A Data Source In The Analysis Of Soil Salinization On The Upper Nile, Daniel Cooper, Jerry C. Coiner
LARS Symposia
Desertification is caused by two major factors--climatic variation and human modification of the environment. Irrigation in arid regions may play a role in causing desertification by increasing the amount of land that undergoes the process of soil salinization, thereby decreasing the ability of a region to support vegetation.
The purpose of this paper is to report preliminary studies, incorporating Landsat data, on the location, magnitude and collateral effects of salinization. The study area is the Kom Ombo region of the Upper Nile valley about forty miles north of the Aswan High Dam. Landsat data are studied using a microcomputer-based interactive …

Fine Structure In The Spectral Reflectance Of Vegetation And Soils, V. C. Vanderbilt, E. R. Stoner, L. L. Biehl, B. F. Robinson, R. A. Weismiller, M. E. Bauer
LARS Symposia
The spectral reflective response of plants, soils, and rocks may contain information concentrated in relatively narrow spectral regions defined by the light absorption properties of the constituent atoms and molecules. The hope exists that such information will be of value in remote sensing in discriminating information classes, in identifying growth stages and stress conditions in crops, and in delineating the chemical and physical properties of soils and rocks. Satellite sensors measuring spectral regions possibly as narrow as 0.02 µm, a spectral resolution significantly better than that (0.1 µm) of the Landsat multispectral scanner, appear feasible.
Fine structure in crop spectra …

The use of rotated and non-rotated principal component and vegetation (green biomass) indices to enhance original four band Landsat MSS data has a potential to improve delineation of surface features particularly in underdeveloped regions of the world which have a paucity of organized ground truth. It is vital to analyze and display Landsat data in forms which highlight features of interest most effectively especially in areas with limited or outdated surface data. Principal component and biomass ratio forms of Landsat data have proven to have the ability to identify selected land surface features better than using original Landsat data, consequently …

Each year from late May to early June, the Economics, Statistics, and Cooperatives Service (ESCS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture conducts a nationwide June Enumerative Survey (JES), consisting of interviews with farm operators in randomly selected area-sample units called segments, which are typically one square mile in size. Later in the growing season, crop yields are estimated from biological measurements conducted in small plots of land only a few square meters in size, which have been selected by two-stage subsampling from JES segments. The first stage of the subsampling is for fields planted to the crop of interest; second-stage …
Relationship Between Scene Characteristics And Landsat Classification Performance Of Corn And Soybeans, Getulio T. Batista, Marilyn M. Hixson, Marvin E. Bauer
Relationship Between Scene Characteristics And Landsat Classification Performance Of Corn And Soybeans, Getulio T. Batista, Marilyn M. Hixson, Marvin E. Bauer
LARS Symposia
Accuracy of classification of Landsat MSS data depends on a number of parameters such as scene characteristics, training, classification, and area estimation procedures selected. The variability in accuracy that one may find using the same classification procedure applied at different locations is due primarily to scene variability. The understanding of the way that characteristics of a scene affect classifier performance is an important step to determine the amount of training, classification algorithm, and area estimation procedures that would be suitable to achieve an optimal accuracy.
The objective of this paper was to sample a variety of corn and soybean areas …
