Use Of Landsat-2 Data Technique To Estimate Silverleaf Sunflower Infestation, A. J. Richardson, D. E. Escobar, H. W. Gausman, J. H. Everitt

LARS Symposia

We conducted this study to test the feasibility of the technique using the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (LANDSAT-2) multispectral scanner (MSS) data, collected on June 2, 1977, to distinguish silverleaf sunflowers (Helianthus argophyllus Torr. and Gray) from other plant species and for estimating the hectarage percent of its infestation. Sunflowers gave high mean digital counts in all four LANDSAT MSS bands that were manifested as a "pinkish" image response on the LANDSAT color composite imagery. Photo- and LANDSAT-estimated hectare percentages for silverleaf sunflower within a 23,467-ha study area were 9.1 and 9.5%, respectively. The geographic occurrence of sunflower areas on …

Retrieval Of Coastal Water Information From Landsat Mss Data, Sueo Ueno

LARS Symposia

In recent years an inverse problem of determining optical parameters of air-water system from the remotely sensed spectral radiance of water has deserved much attention in the field of environmental monitoring. Particularly, optimization approach to the inference of optical properties of subsurface water from the measurements of multispectral scanner data of the sea has been developed analytically and computationally.

In the present paper, making use of the invariant embedding, an initial-value solution of the transfer equation in air-water system with allowance for the interaction of radiation at the system interface is provided. The Cauchy system of the scattering function under …

Canopy Reflectance As Influenced By Solar Illumination Angle, J. C. Kollenkark, V. C. Vanderbilt, C. S. T. Daughtry, M. E. Bauer

LARS Technical Reports

An experiment was conducted at West Lafayette, Indiana in 1979 to quantitatively describe the interaction of the solar illumination angle and row azimuth angle on the measured reflectance factor (RF) of soybean canopies consisting of 11 plots. Nine of the plots were planted in 71 cm wide rows; the other plots were of bare soil and soybeans with 100 percent soil cover. Reflectance factor data in four spectral bands, 0.5-0.6, 0.6-0.7, 0.7-0.8, and 0.8-1.1 pm, were taken at 15 minute intervals during three clear days, August 12 and 31 and September 19 over nine plots of differing azimuthal direction with …

Waveband Evaluation Of Proposed Thematic Mapper In Forest Cover Classification, Richard S. Latty, Roger M. Hoffer

LARS Technical Reports

This study involved the evaluation of the characteristics of multispectral scanner data relative to forest cover type mapping, using NASA's NS-001 multispectral scanner to simulate the proposed Thematic Mapper (TM). The objectives were to determine: (1) the optimum number of wavebands to utilize in computer classifications of TM data; (2) which channel combinations provide the highest expected classification accuracy; and (3) the relative merit of each channel in the context of the cover classes examined. Transformed divergence was used as a measure of statistical distance between spectral class densities associated with each of twelve cover classes. The maximum overall mean …

Estimation Of Proportions In Mixed Pixels Through Their Region Characterization, C. B. Chittineni Jan 1981

Estimation Of Proportions In Mixed Pixels Through Their Region Characterization, C. B. Chittineni

LARS Symposia

The estimation of proportions of classes in the mixed pixels of multichannel imagery data is considered in this paper. A significant portion of the imagery data consists of a mixture of the responses of two or more objects whenever the objects being viewed by a multispectral scanner are not large enough relative to the size of a resolution element. A region of mixed pixels can be characterized through the probability density function of proportions of classes in the mixed pixels. Using information from the spectral vectors of a given set of pixels from the mixed pixel region, expressions are developed …

Remote Sensing Data Applied To Land Use Survey At The Paraiba Valley, M. A. Lombardo, E. M. L. De Moraes Novo, M. Niero, C. Foresti

LARS Symposia

The objective of this study is to develop a methodology for land-use survey and to determine the land-use modification rates using data of LANDSAT system. The Paraiba Valley (state of Sao Paulo) was selected as test site. Both visual and automatic interpretation methods were employed to analyze seven land-use classes. They are: urban area, industrial area, bare soil, cultivated area, pastureland, reforestation and natural vegetation. By means of visual interpretation it is observed little spectral differences among those classes. The automatic classification of LANDSAT MSS data using maximum likelihood algorithm shows a 39% average error of omission and a 3,4% …

Spectrally Derived Inputs To Crop Yield Models, K. P. Gallo, C. S. T. Daughtry Jan 1981

Spectrally Derived Inputs To Crop Yield Models, K. P. Gallo, C. S. T. Daughtry

LARS Symposia

Solar radiation as an energy source for plants is available only when it interacts with leaves. The ratio of total solar radiation intercepted (SRI) by a corn canopy has been described as a function of leaf area index (LAI) using Bouguer's Law, and is included in models which predict final corn grain yield. LAI for corn may vary greatly over large areas due to differences in planting dates, hybrids, stresses, and plant populations. Measurement of LAI is tedious and time consuming, which limits the use of models requiring LAI to relatively small areas. Spectrally-derived estimates of SRI may more accurately …

Inventory Of Semi-Arid Rangelands In South Texas With Landsat Data, J. H. Everitt, A. J. Richardson, C. L. Wiegand Jan 1981

Inventory Of Semi-Arid Rangelands In South Texas With Landsat Data, J. H. Everitt, A. J. Richardson, C. L. Wiegand

LARS Symposia

A 39,000-ha semi-arid rangeland test site in Starr and Zapata Counties, Texas, was used to compare rangeland inventory and other landuse categories estimated by digital pattern recognition methods (maximum likelihood ratio classification) with percentages estimated from a ground-correlated print enlarged to 1:100,000 scale from a LANDSAT color composite transparency. Five land-use categories were identified (grassland, mixed brush rangeland, saline rangeland, cropland, and water). We found a highly significant correlation (r = 0.997**) between the photo- and computer-estimated hectarage for the June LANDSAT-2 overpass. The correlation was not significant for the August overpass largely because a large percentage of the most …

Fris: An Operational Geographic Information System, Bill M. Shelley Jan 1981

Fris: An Operational Geographic Information System, Bill M. Shelley

LARS Symposia

One of the most significant aspects of the Forest Resource Information System is not that it is a Geographic Information System with new capabilities, but rather it is in use operationally in a production mode. This system stems from the unique background of government, university, and private industry working together in a jointly sponsored project. Private industry's main interest was not in the production of another experimental Geographic Information System, but in the production of an operational system which would provide a return on its investment.

In a Geographic Information System the major two items of interest are the different …

Comprehensive Geo-Data Base Control With An Electronic Coordinate Digitizer, Thomas D. Frank Jan 1981

Comprehensive Geo-Data Base Control With An Electronic Coordinate Digitizer, Thomas D. Frank

LARS Symposia

A need for geo-referenced data within the scientific community has led to the development of comprehensive geographic information systems. Such comprehensive systems are characterized by three fundamental attributes. They possess a data organization which is indexed by using a geographic locator. They have the capability to manipulate and analyze the data base by displaying raw data, to aggregate raw data into classes, to tabulate the distribution of data within a class, and to perform arbitrary arithmetic operations on the data. They also possess the capability to prepare graphical displays of the data in the form of maps. Now that remote …

Geologic Application Of Landsat Imagery Enhanced By Topographic Data, Guy Rochon, Miodrag Roksandic Jan 1981

Geologic Application Of Landsat Imagery Enhanced By Topographic Data, Guy Rochon, Miodrag Roksandic

LARS Symposia

Structural analysis of geological phenomena may be enhanced by real or simulated illumination conditions of satellite data. With this concept in mind, an experimental project has been developed to manipulate the Landsat radiances under the control of simulated illumination conditions and viewing geometry. To achieve this, a digital terrain model (DTM) was created by digitizing contour lines of topographic maps on a scale of 1 to 50,000. Using a specially designed algorithm, elevation was later calculated for each grid point at an interval of 50 meters on the ground and overlaid on a geometrically corrected Landsat image. After calculation of …

On The Slope-Aspect Correction Of Multispectral Scanner Data, P. M. Teillet, B. Guindon, D. G. Goodenough

LARS Symposia

The effects of topography on the radiometric properties of multispectral scanner (MSS) data are examined in the context of the remote sensing of forests in mountainous regions. The two test areas considered for this study are located in the coastal mountains of British Columbia, one at the Anderson River near Boston Bar and the other at Gun Lake near Bralorne. The predominant forest type at the former site is Douglas fir, whereas forest types at the latter site are primarily lodgepole pine and ponderosa pine. Both regions have rugged topography, with elevations ranging from 275 to 1500 metres above sea …

Another Look At Dutch Elm Disease Via Digitized Aerial Photography, T. M. Lillesand, D. E. Meisner, D. W. French, W. L. Johnson

LARS Symposia

Previous studies have indicated that crown morphology and within-crown color variations, rather than between-crown color differences, are principal keys to the accurate aerial detection of Dutch elm disease (DED). Because within-crown color variations often tend to be very subtle on conventional infrared photographs, microdensitometry and subsequent digital enhancement were evaluated as potential means of improving detection accuracy.

Vertical 70 mm color infrared photographs at scales of 1:6,000 and 1:12,000 were taken on several dates during 1979-80 over a St. Paul, Minnesota study area containing high incidence of DED. Scanning microdensitometer data from the photographs were processed using three enhancement techniques: …

Identification Of Agricultural Crops By Computer Processing In The Provinces Of Cordoba And La Pampa - Argentina, Mirta A. Raed, Cecilia Espoz Jan 1981

Identification Of Agricultural Crops By Computer Processing In The Provinces Of Cordoba And La Pampa - Argentina, Mirta A. Raed, Cecilia Espoz

LARS Symposia

This paper deals with agricultural inventory parameters from LANDSAT digital data extracted via an interactive processing system.

In this study, a man-machine interactive processing system performed the analysis of LANDSAT digital data. Specifically, multispectral agricultural crop identification and spatial area determination, within the study areas, were carried out.

A temporal coordination between the multispectral LANDSAT satellite and the ground truth of the same area was attained, from which two test fields digitally classified, in accordance with crop species, crop varieties and soil types of the same place were chosen.

The results illustrate the importance of interactive processing for analyzing LANDSAT …
