Mapping Deer Yard Habitats Using Landsat: A Practical Application, Kevin D. Doran Jan 1981

Mapping Deer Yard Habitats Using Landsat: A Practical Application, Kevin D. Doran

LARS Symposia

Mapping habitats suitable for deer yards using Landsat Multispectral Scanner (MSS) digital data has proven to be a valuable tool in New Hampshire. By knowing the requirements for deer yards in conjunction with the forest types of an area, considerable time and money can be saved by the game biologist locating deer yards. The procedure used is a relatively simple one. Landsat classification maps are generated for various towns using softwood, hardwood, mixed wood, open, and water categories. The maps are then used by the biologists to field check every softwood area on the classification map, softwood areas being important …

Computer Generated Maps From Digital Satellite Data: A Case Study In Florida, L. G. Arvanitis, R. M. Reich, R. Newburne

LARS Symposia

The availability of satellite data and the advantages offered by automatic machine-processing of such data have opened up new and exciting possibilities for developing ground cover maps. Two Landsat analyses techniques (an unsupervised clustering algorithm called Landsat Signature Development Program, and an interactive method based on the Multispectral Image Analyzer) are used to compare computer generated character maps to known earth surface features. Data samples are shown and applications are discussed. Reference is made to the value of the digital computer in natural and man-made features mapping and monitoring, and suggestions are given for further research.

What's Happening To The World's Forest Resources, James J. Talbot

LARS Symposia

This paper discusses the current information base available on global forest resources. The focus includes: the extent of forest cover based on the most widely-used data base; the accuracy of this data base; other estimates of forest resources; the special case of tropical forests; the extent to which deforestation in the tropics is factored into the global forest resource estimates; and emerging patterns of demand and utilization of forests. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of what information is needed to obtain a more comprehensive assessment of forest resource status.

Strategies For Information -- Directed Wetlands, Norman E. G. Roller Jan 1981

Strategies For Information -- Directed Wetlands, Norman E. G. Roller

LARS Symposia

Protection and effective management of wetlands requires information describing their type, distribution, and condition. Inventories are carried out to obtain such information. The efficiency of inventories that produce statistical information can be improved by the use of remote sensing because the synoptic observation capabilities of remote sensors, particularly Landsat, make it possible to nearly eliminate sampling error. The information furnished by inventories designed to produce maps can be extended through the use of digital data manipulation techniques to include (1) quantitative measures of the spatial arrangement of a resource and (2) detection of changes in a resource over time.

A Georeferenced Information System For Real Time Hydrologic Modeling, Jack D. Fellows Jan 1981

A Georeferenced Information System For Real Time Hydrologic Modeling, Jack D. Fellows

LARS Symposia

Remotely sensed digital data (Landsat CCT) has proven an efficient and cost effective means of defining land cover information required in hydrologic modeling. However, an organization such as a county government finds great difficulty in collecting and integrating regional ancillary data (aerial photos, soils, etc) with digital remote sensed data.

A computer-based information system allowing engineers to create, access, integrate, and maintain a multi-parameter geographical data base which provides information required by the Soil Conservation Service hydrologic models is described. Land cover, soils, and elevation data are stored as arrays of cells referenced to USGS quad sheets.

A typical scenario …

Statistical Tests And Interactive Displays Of Landsat Classification Accuracies, R. Welch, Y. Hsu Jan 1981

Statistical Tests And Interactive Displays Of Landsat Classification Accuracies, R. Welch, Y. Hsu

LARS Symposia

In a teaching and research environment where Landsat digital data are employed on a day-to-day basis, it is often necessary to assess thematic classification accuracies in a rapid and efficient manner. While such assessments can be made by manually counting the correctly and incorrectly classified pixels in each of several test sites, this procedure is often too slow and tedious to be of effective use. Consequently, a set of interactive computer programs have been developed for use with a graphics terminal (e.g. Tektronix 4014) which determine the classification accuracies of pixels in pre-selected test sites. Results are displayed in both …

Resource Information Needs In Industry And The Role Of Remote Sensing, Robinson G. Barker Jan 1981

Resource Information Needs In Industry And The Role Of Remote Sensing, Robinson G. Barker

LARS Symposia

The success of any management strategy is predicated on adequate and timely information pertinent to the functional parameters of operations. The forest based industry has a special form on information need wherein its primary raw material is derived from a living, dynamic vegetative complex; the forest. Such a forest resource information system, to be viable, must portray the forest at a point in time, and mirror change as it occurs.

Traditionally, three data sources have been utilized in forest related information systems; imagery (aerial photographs), timber inventory and line maps as an output product combining the salient features of imagery …

Effect Of Forest Canopy Closure On Incoming Solar Radiance, C. L. Dottavio Jan 1981

Effect Of Forest Canopy Closure On Incoming Solar Radiance, C. L. Dottavio

LARS Symposia

A previous investigation into the utility of Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data for detecting gypsy moth defoliation has met with limited success. The ability to separate healthy and moderate defoliation is confounded by spectral similarity and topographic effects. In order to better understand the physical processes involved in defoliation assessment from remotely sensed data, a field study was designed to investigate the effect of forest canopy closure and other environmental variables on in· coming solar radiation. Diffuse radiation measurements were recorded in red, infrared, and middle infrared wavelengths using the Mark II Three Band Field Radiometer. Results to date indicate …

Water Quality Models With Different Functions Of Exotech Radiometer Bands, K. R. Rao, R. Krishnan, A. K. Chakraborty, B. L. Deekshatulu Jan 1981

Water Quality Models With Different Functions Of Exotech Radiometer Bands, K. R. Rao, R. Krishnan, A. K. Chakraborty, B. L. Deekshatulu

LARS Symposia

Surveillance of water quality by remote sensing technique can be pursued with advantage. An attempt has been made in this paper to obtain regional models of water quality of inland tanks and lakes. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis between water quality parameters and several functions of Exotech radiometer band reflectance values, namely, bands alone, bands and their ratios, and, bands and their products are evaluated with respect to performance of the regression parameters. It is seen, that, the pairwise product of the reflectance in different bands is better correlated than the bands and their ratios. A possible explanation for this …

Computer-Based Classification Accuracy Due To The Spatial Resolution Using Per-Point Versus Per-Field Classification Techniques, Richard S. Latty, Roger M. Hoffer

LARS Symposia

The 42.5 microradian angular IFOV of the Thematic Mapper will provide a linear spatial resolution of approximately 30 meters from the nominal altitude of 710 km. This study determined the classification accuracies achieved with MSS data of four different spatial resolutions using two different types of classifiers.

The data were obtained on May 2, 1979 with the NASA NS-001 Thematic Mapper Simulator (TMS) over an area in northeastern South Carolina from a height above ground of 5945 meters. Data sets simulating three different spatial resolutions were computed from the original 15 meter nominal spatial resolution data. The classification accuracies achieved …

Remote Sensing Of Soil Trafficability Factors, James L. Kirkland Jan 1981

Remote Sensing Of Soil Trafficability Factors, James L. Kirkland

LARS Symposia

The ability of a soil to support military vehicular traffic is usually determined by using the US Army cone penetrometer. The cone index obtained from this method may be used in the AMC-74 mobility model. Moisture is an important factor in the cone index of all types of soil. Experiments indicate that the electrical resistivity of a soil is related to its moisture content. This paper describes some of these experiments and introduces a technique for aerially obtaining and machine processing soil resistivity data for the mobility model.

Radar Imagery For Forest Cover Mapping, D. J. Knowlton, R. M. Hoffer Jan 1981

Radar Imagery For Forest Cover Mapping, D. J. Knowlton, R. M. Hoffer

LARS Symposia

Dual-polarized, X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery was obtained from an altitude of 60,000 feet over a test area near Camden, South Carolina on June 30, 1980. The objective of this study was to determine, qualitatively, the value of the SAR imagery for identifying various forest cover types. In analyzing the HH and HV polarization images, particular attention was given to the tonal and textural characteristics of the cover types involved.

The analysis of the dual-polarized SAR imagery has shown that certain forest cover features are more easily identified in one polarization than the other, while some features look very …
