Computer Mapping Of Seasonal Groundwater Fluctuations For Two Differing Southern New Jersey Swamp Forests I, William R. Parrott, Phillip E. Reynolds, Daniel C. Hain, John R. Maurer

LARS Symposia

Computer-generated maps (SYMAP, Harvard) of seasonal groundwater fluctuations for two New Jersey swamp forests, a red maple (Acer rubrum) swamp and an Atlantic white cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides) swamp, are presented. Notable differences exist in water table behavior for the two swamp forests and are best accounted for by topographic differences. Other factors examined which might affect the hydrologic differences include vegetation and subsurface geologic differences.

Crop Area Estimation Using Ground Gathered And Sampled Landsat Data, James W. Mergerson Jan 1981

Crop Area Estimation Using Ground Gathered And Sampled Landsat Data, James W. Mergerson

LARS Symposia

This paper describes a comparative study in which a procedure using ground gathered data and classified LANDSAT data for estimating crop area was compared to procedures using ground gathered data and sampled LANDSAT data. Data from parts of Iowa and Missouri were used. Unitemporal data were used in Iowa and multitemporal data were used in Missouri. Results indicate that some sampling schemes can be used without any significant difference in the crop area estimates, but with a large reduction in cost for corn, soybeans, and winter wheat.

Crop Monitoring In Australia Using Digital Analysis Of Landsat Data, Ken W. Dawbin, David W. Beach Jan 1981

Crop Monitoring In Australia Using Digital Analysis Of Landsat Data, Ken W. Dawbin, David W. Beach

LARS Symposia

This paper describes on-going co-operative research by the New South Wales (N.S.W.) Department of Agriculture and IBM Australia Limited. The aims of the project are to investigate if Landsat digital data can be used to map and monitor agricultural resources, particularly crop acreages and production, over large areas.

From the outset, multi-temporal whole scene computation has been a feature of the technical approach. Software modifications for large data volumes were carried out allowing supervised maximum likelihood classification to be used throughout the work. Considerable amounts of agronomic ground truth have been collected over wide latitudes for use in training the …

The Role Of Digital Terrain Models In The Remote Sensing Of Forests, B. Guindon, D. G. Goodenough, P. M. Teillet

LARS Symposia

Approximately one half of Canada's marketable forests are located in mountainous areas. If this vital resource is to be monitored using high resolution satellite and airborne sensors, topographic information must be incorporated into image analysis procedures.

For the past two years, research has been on-going at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing into the integration of digital terrain models with imagery for the purposes of estimating timber volume and energy. This paper describes the principal components of our processing scheme with particular emphasis on the use of elevation, slope and aspect data.

Imagery is first rectified to a map grid …

Digital Correction Of Solar Illumination And Viewing Angle Artifacts In Remotely Sensed Images, Tsutomu Shibata, Werner Frei, Mark Sutton Jan 1981

Digital Correction Of Solar Illumination And Viewing Angle Artifacts In Remotely Sensed Images, Tsutomu Shibata, Werner Frei, Mark Sutton

LARS Symposia

We seek to understand and correct shading artifacts caused by varying solar illumination conditions and different viewing angles in remotely sensed images. A synthetic image simulating the shading effects for the sun angle and viewing angle as a real image, is generated using a terrain reflectance model and digital elevation data. A good correlation is obtained between the real and synthetic images. The artifact correction is then made, and a resulting image shows useful information that is not apparent in the original image.

We also present a three-dimensional perspective representation of a terrain with a corresponding aerial photograph mapped on …

The package is comprised of sub image extraction and rectification, image display and enhancement, and both supervised and unsupervised classification routines. It has been used in both instructional and research settings at the University.

Data Compression Of Sar/Mss Data Sets, Korehiro Maeda, David G. Goodenough Jan 1981

Data Compression Of Sar/Mss Data Sets, Korehiro Maeda, David G. Goodenough

LARS Symposia

Earth observation satellites from NASA, France, the European Space Agency, Japan, and Canada will provide us with higher resolutions and more channels of remotely sensed data. If effective compression methods can be developed, there are potentially large cost savings to be obtained in transmitting, processing, storing, and disseminating these data. Resource management systems will likely make use of data from a variety of satellites having sensors operating in visible, infrared, and microwave regions. Research at CCRS in combining synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and multispectral scanner (MSS) imagery has demonstrated the complementarity of these data for agricultural interpretations (Goodenough et al, …

Landsat Classification Accuracy Assessment Procedures: An Account Of A National Working Conference, Roy A. Mead, John Szajgin

LARS Symposia

A working conference was held in Sioux Falls, South Dakota November 12-14, 1980 dealing with Landsat classification Accuracy Assessment Procedures. Thirteen formal presentations were made on three general topics: (1) sampling procedures, (2) statistical analysis techniques, and (3) examples of projects which included accuracy assessment and the associated costs, logistical problems and value of the accuracy data to the remote sensing specialist and the resource manager. Nearly twenty conference attendees participated in two discussion sessions addressing various issues associated with accuracy assessment. This paper presents an account of the accomplishments of the conference.

Derivation Of Shallow Ocean Bottom Reflectance Values From Color Aerial Photography, D. J. Gerson, L. K. Fehrenbach, K. R. Piech, D. W. Gaucher Jan 1981

Derivation Of Shallow Ocean Bottom Reflectance Values From Color Aerial Photography, D. J. Gerson, L. K. Fehrenbach, K. R. Piech, D. W. Gaucher

LARS Symposia

An alternative to the field survey method of acquiring hydrographic data is described. The technique involves the use of digitized color aerial photography in the derivation of the percentage of reflectance of shallow ocean bottom materials. These spectral reflectance values can then be used in an algorithm for calculating water depths. The reflectances that were derived in this study show a close relative comparison to ground truth information. After a discussion of the causes of discrepancies between derived and actual reflectance values, it is concluded that this method of data acquisition merits further investigation due to its high geometric fidelity, …

A method of classifying MSS data is proposed which has some advantages in that it does not contain the usual pre-processing constraints, and caters for variation and correlation in the data. In addition it is very economic in terms of computer time.

Integration Of Digital Elevation Model Data And Landsat Mss Data To Quantify The Effects Of Slope Orientation On The Classification Of Forest Canopy Condition, Darrel L. Williams, Kevin J. Ingram Jan 1981

Integration Of Digital Elevation Model Data And Landsat Mss Data To Quantify The Effects Of Slope Orientation On The Classification Of Forest Canopy Condition, Darrel L. Williams, Kevin J. Ingram

LARS Symposia

Over the past several years, research has been conducted at the Goddard Space Flight Center to develop techniques to facilitate the use of remotely sensed data for monitoring forest disturbances. A majority of this work has involved the digital analysis of Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data to detect insect defoliation of hardwood forests. The diverse terrain and topographic conditions typically associated with forest lands are known to cause variations in remotely sensed spectral data, leading to problems in accurately classifying forest cover conditions in mountainous terrain. This study assesses the utility of incorporating high spatial resolution digital terrain data with …

An Unsupervised Classification Approach For Analysis Of Landsat Data To Monitor Land Reclamation In Belmont County, Ohio, James O. Brumfield, Hubertus H. L. Bloemer, William J. Campbell Jan 1981

An Unsupervised Classification Approach For Analysis Of Landsat Data To Monitor Land Reclamation In Belmont County, Ohio, James O. Brumfield, Hubertus H. L. Bloemer, William J. Campbell

LARS Symposia

Surface mining for coal is a major economic activity in east central Ohio. Ohio has strict reclamation laws which require that the mining companies return the mined land to environmentally acceptable conditions. During the decade of the seventies, a particularly conscious effort has been made in Ohio to enforce the reclamation laws. Monitoring the reclamation efforts and progress via traditional means is time consuming, expensive, and often subjective. LANDSAT multispectral data provides a means to eliminate some of the negative aspects of the above.

A nontraditional unsupervised classification procedure has been devised using a clustering algorithm with a NASA modification …
