Aerospace And Defense The Financial Impact Of Covid-19 On The Rolls-Royce Supply Chain, Khushboo Jain
Aerospace And Defense The Financial Impact Of Covid-19 On The Rolls-Royce Supply Chain, Khushboo Jain
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
After the pandemic hit in 2020, the aerospace and defense industry was specifically impacted very harshly. Rolls-Royce was one of the main companies that had to go through major structural and logistical changes to cope with the changing economy. As one of the leaders of the aerospace and defense (A&D) industry, the main problem that Rolls-Royce was facing was the drastic reduction in demand for civil and commercial aircraft, which was one of Rolls-Royce’s core businesses. This led to supply chain problems, reduced profits, and eventually heavy losses. The effects of these problems caused great distress in the company.

Food For Local Benefit: Civic Agriculture At The Wea Creek Orchard, Reese Curtis
Food For Local Benefit: Civic Agriculture At The Wea Creek Orchard, Reese Curtis
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Th is project is a case study on Wea Creek Orchard, an intergenerational farm in the greater Lafayette area. Because this was an ethnographic project based on grounded theory, I did not have a set research question upon entering the field. After spending a few months volunteering on the Wea Creek Orchard, however, I noticed that this farm operates in a community-oriented way, prioritizing community engagement over the pursuit of profit. With these observations as a base, this project reviews the ways in which Wea Creek Orchard runs its business as a civic agriculture operation. Civic agriculture refers to locally …

Translanguaging Views And Practices Of Indiana Dual-Language Bilingual Education Teachers, Amanda Shie
Translanguaging Views And Practices Of Indiana Dual-Language Bilingual Education Teachers, Amanda Shie
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
As of fall 2018, the United States had 5 million English language learners (ELLs) in the public K–12 education system (National Center for Education Statistics, 2021). Within this population, ELL students in Indiana number over 50,000, or 5.9% of all public K–12 students in the state. Dual-language bilingual education (DLBE) programs often neglect the strategy of translanguaging in the classroom, disadvantaging ELLs. Translanguaging is defined as drawing “on all the linguistic resources of the child to maximize understanding and achievement” and is demonstrated in the natural switching of languages in bilinguals (Lewis et al., 2012). Further, translanguaging attempts to correct …
Agricultural Aerosols: The Impact Of Farming Activity On Ice Nucleating Particles, Joseph Robinson
Agricultural Aerosols: The Impact Of Farming Activity On Ice Nucleating Particles, Joseph Robinson
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Farming activities cause particles such as soil dust and plant material to be emitted into the air. Some of these aerosols can become ice nucleating particles (INPs), serving as seeds for ice and mixed-phase clouds. While there have been ground-based studies of these particles in the western Great Plains and a single air-based study in Indiana, there is a distinct lack of ground-based studies in the Midwest. In Indiana, over two-thirds of the state is farmland, with over 75% of land in Tippecanoe County used for agriculture. Despite farming being such an essential part of life in Indiana, the connection …
Exploring The Purdue Teacher Education Program: Focus On Diversity, Equity, And Social Justice, Julia Pirrello
Exploring The Purdue Teacher Education Program: Focus On Diversity, Equity, And Social Justice, Julia Pirrello
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
During this time of heightened awareness of social injustices via Black Lives Matter protests, the #MeToo movement, and the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to ensure that teacher preparation curriculum includes attention to knowledge and skills related to social justice issues in education. Th e purpose of this study was to investigate the ways in which social justice, diversity, and equity are addressed in the foundational courses of the Purdue Teacher Education Program (PTEP). McDonald (2005) proposed a framework in which social justice is integrated across all experiences (e.g., courses, activities, clinical placements) in a teacher education program. In an …
Sport Is Not Neutral: A Comparison Of Gender Inequalities In Colombian And American Women’S Basketball Leagues, Angela Lasso Jiménez
Sport Is Not Neutral: A Comparison Of Gender Inequalities In Colombian And American Women’S Basketball Leagues, Angela Lasso Jiménez
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
The negative consequences of patriarchy include gender inequality in sports. In both the United States and Colombia, the highest level of women’s basketball illustrates this problem. This research highlights two social and political dimensions of the problem. First, it exposes discrimination and the way in which the media trivialize the work performed by female basketball players; second, it questions the way in which women players are called “professionals” but are not always treated as such. Through a comparative analysis method, I explain some of the similar gender challenges faced by women’s basketball players in both the Women’s National Basketball Association …

Behavioral Alterations Following Exposure To A Mixture Of Lead And Atrazine During Early Development In The Zebrafish Model System, Anusha Kv Lakshmi Dharmavathi
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Lead (Pb) and atrazine (ATZ) are hazardous environmental toxicants that can exist as a mixture in potable water. Numerous single chemical studies on Pb and ATZ support adverse health outcomes, including neurotoxicity, but mixture studies are limited. Th e aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that Pb and ATZ mixtures result in a greater than additive toxicity, causing increased adverse health outcomes than single chemical exposures. Th e zebrafish model system was exposed to 3 or 30 ppb (µg/L) ATZ, 10 ppb (equivalent to 0.1 µg/dL) or 100 ppb Pb, along with mixtures of each beginning at …
Investigating Influences On Intercultural Sensitivity Through Undergraduate And Graduate Students’ Reflections On Identities, Daphne Fauber, Kathryn Mueller
Investigating Influences On Intercultural Sensitivity Through Undergraduate And Graduate Students’ Reflections On Identities, Daphne Fauber, Kathryn Mueller
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Due to a shifting global environment and unique personal circumstances, traditional in-person learning experiences that foster cross-cultural interactions and learning, including study abroad programs, have become unavailable to many. In light of this issue, we investigated how a virtual cross-cultural course, such as Global Social Justice in Education (GSJE), could allow undergraduate and graduate students to explore their cultural identities and enhance their intercultural sensitivity. Data for this study was collected via three distinct GSJE reflections completed by a single cohort of 11 Purdue graduate and undergraduate students who interacted with international participants. Purdue participant reflections were analyzed and coded …
Non Ennarabile Textum: Allusive Ekphrasis In Francisco Javier Alegre's Alexandrias, Shashank Dimri
Non Ennarabile Textum: Allusive Ekphrasis In Francisco Javier Alegre's Alexandrias, Shashank Dimri
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Neo-Latin literature in colonial New Spain has a rich history that has only in recent years garnered broader interest from scholars. One of the most unique works produced in New Spain during this time is Jesuit scholar Francisco Javier Alegre’s Alexandrias, an epic that depicts Alexander the Great’s conquest of the Phoenician city of Tyre. As there is scant scholarship analyzing the literary elements of the Alexandrias, this paper focuses only on Alegre’s usage of ekphrasis—a detailed description of an object—in book one of the epic, rather than attempting to explore every allusive aspect in this dense text. …
Impact Of Adolescent Social Isolation On Adult, Binge-Like Ethanol Consumption And Plasma Corticosterone In High-Alcohol-Preferring Mice, Eva Cullins
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Adolescent stress exposure increases the likelihood of alcohol misuse and alcohol use disorder (AUD) in adulthood; however, it is not clear how genetic and environmental factors interact to increase risk. This study examined how adolescent social isolation affects adult binge-like ethanol drinking and levels of the stress hormone corticosterone in male and female mice with a genetic predisposition toward high alcohol preference (HAP). Twenty-eight HAP mice were separated into group-housed (GH) and socially isolated (SI) conditions (n = 13, 13). Binge drinking was assessed using a drinking in the dark (DID) procedure. Blood samples were taken before DID and after …
