Sustainable Air Conditioning By Combining Membrane Air Dehumidifcation And Dew Point Evaporative Cooling, Maisha Mumtaz Nov 2022

Sustainable Air Conditioning By Combining Membrane Air Dehumidifcation And Dew Point Evaporative Cooling, Maisha Mumtaz

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

In the United States, approximately 46% of total building energy consumption is attributed to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems (HVAC), and 21% of electricity consumption in the commercial and residential sectors is due to space cooling. With the added issue of global warming, cooling and dehumidification loads are expected to further increase in the future. Current practices involve using a vapor compression cycle to cool and dehumidify air through condensation dehumidification using refrigerants which can be environmentally hazardous. This process is associated with significant energy penalties relating to phase change of moisture, thus necessitating the exploration of alternative technologies. …

Investigation Of Mechanical Properties Of Recycled Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Composites Reinforcing Cement, Caleb Mull, Fnu Archie, Harry Lee, Guyuan Zhang

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

The usage of fiber-reinforced polymer composites in various fields has increased significantly due to their advantageous physical and mechanical properties. However, the sustainability of composite parts has not been fully solved for a long time. Most end-of-life (EOL) composite parts have been landfilled without recycling due to the recycling cost and lack of application of recycled composites. Mechanical composite recycling that shred the EOL composite part and reuse it for downgraded applications is one of the most commonly used recycling processes for the EOL composite part. In this research, mechanical composite recycling process was demonstrated for the construction application. The …

Enhanced Functionality And Bio-Accessibility Of Composite Pomegranate Peel Extract-Enriched "Boba Balls", Ayse Neslihan Dundar, Kubra Uzuner, Mahmud Ekrem Parlak, Oya Irmak Sahin, Furkan Turker Saricaoglu, Senay Simsek

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

“Boba balls” or pearls have recently gained popularity for beverages or food toppings. “Boba balls” could be developed into functional foods by the encapsulation of bioactive compounds. In this study, gelatin/sodium alginate composite “Boba balls” enriched with pomegranate peel extract (PPE) at different concentrations (0, 1, 2, and 3%) were prepared. They were characterized in terms of physical, rheological, textural, morphological, and sensory properties, as well as in vitro digestion, bio-accessibility, and release kinetic of PPE. Adding PPE improved the “Boba” mix’s viscoelasticity and decreased the “Boba balls”’ hardness. The increasing PPE ratio significantly (p < 0.05) increased the antioxidant capacity and total phenolic content. The addition of PPE preserved the spherical shape of the “Boba balls”, and as the PPE ratio increased, new junction zones were observed in SEM images. The in vitro digestibility of PPE was significantly (p < 0.05) improved by preserving PPE from the mouth and gastric medium, and “Boba balls” showed the highest release and bio-accessibility in the intestinal medium. Consequently, PPE as a by-product could be successfully used at 2% concentration for enhancing the functionality and bio-accessibility of “Boba balls” without affecting sensory properties.

Myocardial Strain Imaging In Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Conner C. Earl, Jonathan Soslow, Larry W. Markham, Craig J. Goergen Nov 2022

Myocardial Strain Imaging In Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Conner C. Earl, Jonathan Soslow, Larry W. Markham, Craig J. Goergen

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Cardiomyopathy (CM) is the leading cause of death for individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). While DMD CM progresses rapidly and fatally for some in teenage years, others can live relatively symptom-free into their thirties or forties. Because CM progression is variable, there is a critical need for biomarkers to detect early onset and rapid progression. Despite recent advances in imaging and analysis, there are still no reliable methods to detect the onset or progression rate of DMD CM. Cardiac strain imaging is a promising technique that has proven valuable in DMD CM assessment, though much more work has been …

An Imaginary* Interview With A Philippines Collections Museum Donor, Camille Ungco

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Ontological distance is the dehumanization that emerges from uninterrogated coloniality between colonized subjects and the oppressive systems. This distancing has occurred in the histories of U.S. teachers both domestic-based and abroad, especially in Southeast Asia. In Steinbock-Pratt’s (2019) historiography on the relationships between early 1900s U.S. teachers and their Filipinx students, ontological distance was “The crux of the colonial relationship was intimacy marked by closeness without understanding, suasion backed by violence, and affection bounded by white and American supremacy” (Steinbock-Pratt, 2019, p. 214). This dehumanizing psychological or ontological distance existed during U.S. colonial regimes abroad, specifically in Southeast Asia and …

Modeling Covid-19 Transmission Between Age Groups In The United States Considering Virus Mutations, Vaccinations, And Reinfection, Jyotirmoy Roy, Samuel Met Heath, Shiyan Wang, Doraiswami Ramkrishna

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

The in-depth understanding of the dynamics of COVID-19 transmission among different age groups is of great interest for governments and health authorities so that strategies can be devised to reduce the pandemic’s detrimental effects. We developed the SIRDV-Virulence (Susceptible-Infected-Recovered-Dead-Vaccinated-Virulence) epidemiological model based on a population balance equation to study the effects virus mutants, vaccination strategies, ‘Anti/Non Vaxxer’ proportions, and reinfection rates to provide methods to mitigate COVID-19 transmission among the United States population. Based on publicly available data, we obtain the key parameters governing the spread of the pandemic. The results show that a large fraction of infected cases comes …

Las Ciudades Del Deseo: Las Políticas De Género, Sexualidad Y Espacio Urbano En El Caribe Hispano, Elena Valdez Nov 2022

Las Ciudades Del Deseo: Las Políticas De Género, Sexualidad Y Espacio Urbano En El Caribe Hispano, Elena Valdez

Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures

Las ciudades del deseo explores the representations of gender, sexuality, and urban space in contemporary narratives from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. By examining a corpus of novels published since 2000, this book shows how the changes in urban landscape create a new image of the city that destroys traditional gender roles and produces different discourses on sexuality. At moments of crisis in political agendas that took place between 1990 and 2000, queer subjects became spokespeople outlining new national projects on each island, while claiming space in the national imaginary. The nation is no longer built on blood …

Veteran–Novice Pairing For Tutors’ Professional Development, Xuan Jiang, Jennifer Peña, Feng Li

The Writing Center Journal

This mixed methods study examines whether veteran–novice mentorship between tutors, as part of continuous in-service professional development, would have a positive effect on either party’s transferable skills (e.g., communication, collaboration, and professionalism). Quantitative findings from pre- and postsurveys about the veteran–novice mentorship suggest that tutors have significant gains in some transferable skills, such as oral/written communication skills, teamwork/collaboration skills, digital technology skills, and career management skills, after attending the continuous in-service professional development. Quantitative findings from the pre- and postsurveys further indicate that novice tutors improve more, compared to veteran tutors, in their self-perceived oral/written communication skill levels. Qualitative findings …

The View From Somewhere: Institutional Values In Collections Decisions, Heather A. Howard, David Zwicky, Danielle Walker

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

As educational institutions consider our values and ethical standards in the wake of 2020, libraries need to scrutinize how those values and standards connect with our licensing and purchasing decisions. “Critical Librarianship”, which is based on a foundation of social justice, the belief that everyone deserves equal opportunities and basic economic, political, and social rights, is at the forefront of work being done by librarians across the country. There is an existing body of literature about the contents of the library collections themselves, with respect to issues like decolonization and open access. These collections, used by students, instructors, and researchers, …
