Efficient Scheduling Algorithms For Robot Inverse Dynamics Computation On A Multiprocessor System, C. L. Chen, C. S. G. Lee, S. H. E. Hou
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Robot manipulators are highly nonlinear systems and their motion control requires the computation of generalized forces/torques to drive all the joint motors at an adequate rate. This paper presents efficient scheduling algorithms for computing the robot inverse dynamics on a multiprocessor system. The problem of scheduling the inverse dynamics computation consisting of m computational modules to be executed on a multiprocessor system consisting of p identical homogeneous processors to achieve a minimum-scheduled length is known to be NP-complete. In order to achieve the minimum computation time, the Newton-Euler equations of motion are expressed in the homogeneous linear recurrence form which …

The work described in this report is directed at understanding transport physics in sub-micron heterostructure devices, at developing computational techniques for modeling such devices, and at applying these techniques to investigate new device concepts. The focus of the past year’s work has been on extending our collisionless, quantum device models to treat elastic scattering processes and at applying previously-developed models to the design and study of AlGaAs/GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistors. This report describes the past year’s progress in these two areas. As a by-product of the research, several heterostructure device models have been developed, 1- and 2-D equilibrium models, 1- …

Optimal Burnable Absorber Assignment For Pwr Core Reload Design, Timothy R. Niggel
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
A new method has been developed to assign burnable poison loadings in the optimization of Pressurized Water Reactor core reload design. The method utilizes successive linear programming to determine the desired burnable poison loading. The optimum loading is selected after the evaluation of all candidate loadings close to the desired loading. The design method was implemented as a sub-program in the nodal core analysis code SIMULATE. The technique was applied to re-design Commonwealth Edison's Zion Unit-1 cycles 9 and 10. Significant improvements were achieved in cycle length, number of BP rods required, and power peaking. The present work completely automates …

Compiler-Driven Cache Policy (Known Reference String), Chi Hung Chi, Henry G. Dietz
Compiler-Driven Cache Policy (Known Reference String), Chi Hung Chi, Henry G. Dietz
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Increasing cache hit-ratios has proved to be instrumental in improving performance of cache-based computers. This is particularly true for computers which have a high cache-miss/cache-hit memory reference delay ratio. Although software policies are often used for main vs. secondary memory "caching", the speed required for an implementation of a CPU vs. main memory cache policy has prompted only investigation of policies which can be implemented directly in hardware. Based on compile-time analysis, it is possible to predict program behavior, thereby increasing the hit-ratio beyond the capability of pure run-time (hardware) techniques. In this report, compiler-driven techniques for this kind of …

The Parse Programming Paradigm. Part I: Software Development Methodology. Part Ii: Software Development Support Tools, T. L. Casavant, Henry G. Dietz, P. C.-Y. Sheu, H. J. Siegel
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
The programming methodology of PARSE (parallel software environment), a software environment being developed for reconfigurable non-shared memory parallel computers, is described. This environment will consist of an integrated collection of language interfaces, automatic and semi-automatic debugging and analysis tools, and operating system —all of which are made more flexible by the use of a knowledge-based implementation for the tools that make up PARSE. The programming paradigm supports the user freely choosing among three basic approaches /abstractions for programming a parallel machine: logic-based descriptive, sequential-control procedural, and parallel-control procedural programming. All of these result in efficient parallel execution. The current work …
A Decomposition Approach For Balancing Large-Scale Acyclic Data Flow Graphs, P. R. Chang, C. S. G. Lee
A Decomposition Approach For Balancing Large-Scale Acyclic Data Flow Graphs, P. R. Chang, C. S. G. Lee
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In designing VLSI architectures for a complex computational task, the functional decomposition of the task into a set of computational modules can be represented as a directed task graph, and the inclusion of input data modifies the task graph to an acyclic data flow graph (ADFG). Due to different paths of traveling and computation time of each computational module, operands may arrive at multi-input modules at different arrival times, causing a longer pipelined time. Delay buffers may be inserted along various paths to balance the ADFG to achieve maximum pipelining. This paper presents an efficient decomposition technique which provides a …

Behavior Of Mucks And Amorphous Peats As Embankment Foundations, Timothy Crowl, C. W. Lovell
Behavior Of Mucks And Amorphous Peats As Embankment Foundations, Timothy Crowl, C. W. Lovell
JTRP Technical Reports
The construction of highway embankments over deposits of amorphous peat and muck is made difficult by the low shear strengths, high compressibilities, and excessive amounts of creep typically associated with soils of this nature. This report begins with a review of the compression behavior of these soils, including a method for predicting embankment settlements from the results of laboratory tests. A soil testing program is then developed for the determination of parameters required for embankment design and construction. Field vane shear tests are recommended for the measurement of the undrained shear strength, and creep tests are recommended for calculation of …

Linear And Nonlinear Programming Methods For Dispatching Power In An Integrated Ac-Dc System, C. N. Lu, S. S. Chen, C. M. Ong
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
As the number of dc systems increases, it is natural to ask what other roles, aside that of bulk power transfer, that these systems could play in the operation of modern power systems. The objective of this research is to develop formulations and methods of solution to coordinate the dispatch of powers in an integrated ac-dc power system for purposes of minimizing transmission losses and production costs. In Section I we present an LP formulation and method of solution to minimize the ac and dc network transmission losses by coordinating the traditional reactive sources with the dispatch of the dc …
Efficient Parallel Algorithms And Vlsi Architectures For Manipulator Jacobian Computation, T. B. Yeung, C. S. G. Lee
Efficient Parallel Algorithms And Vlsi Architectures For Manipulator Jacobian Computation, T. B. Yeung, C. S. G. Lee
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Real-time computations of manipulator Jacobian are examined for executing on uniprocessor computers, parallel computers, and VLSI pipelines. The characteristics of the Jacobian equations are found to be in the form of the first-order linear recurrence. The time lower bound of computing the first-order linear recurrence, and hence the Jacobian, is of order O(N) on uniprocessor computers, and of order O(log2N) on parallel SIMD computers, where TV is the number of degrees-of-freedom of the manipulator. The Generalized-^ method, which achieves the time lower bound on uniprocessor computers, is derived to compute the Jacobian at any desired reference coordinate frame A; from …
A Non-Iterative Power Flow Study Technique Based On The Method Of Minimal Least Squares, Michael Carl Merow
A Non-Iterative Power Flow Study Technique Based On The Method Of Minimal Least Squares, Michael Carl Merow
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
A load flow study is used to determine the state variables of a power system. Load flow studies are essential for analyzing the effects of future load growth, for planning new facilities, and for the normal daily operation of the power system. The goal of this research is to examine an alternative load flow solution to be used in connection with the power system’s data acquisition system. Three standard linear power flow models are proposed which form a redundant set of linear equations. The equations make use of system measurements to help overcome errors introduced in the linear models. The …
The Harmonic Impact Of Rectifiers Serviced By Scott And Leblanc Connected Transformers, William P. Butler
The Harmonic Impact Of Rectifiers Serviced By Scott And Leblanc Connected Transformers, William P. Butler
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Conventional three-phase, six-pulse rectifiers produce harmonic currents which propagate into the ac power system from which they are supplied. A two-phase, four-pulse rectifier can be operated such that there are no ac harmonic currents generated. In this connection, although there is no harmonic impact, the three-phase load current is imbalanced. The operation of a line-commutated two-phase, four-pulse rectifer [rectifier] served by the Scott and LeBlanc three-phase to two-phase transformer connections is simulated using a digital computer program in this thesis. Several different methods of rectification for a two-phase bridge are simulated and their current waveforms analyzed for harmonic content and …
Steady State Analysis Of A Brushless Dc Motor With Half Bridge Inverter, Todd J. Kazmirski
Steady State Analysis Of A Brushless Dc Motor With Half Bridge Inverter, Todd J. Kazmirski
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Brushless do motors have received significant attention in the fractional horsepower motor industry in recent years. The inverter drive used with this system has traditionally been of the full bridge configuration. However, it is possible to use a half bridge inverter to drive the machine. In this paper a method to analyze the brushless dc motor with half bridge inverter is developed. The method is integrated into a digital computer program to simulate the steady state response of the system. The program allows both the inverter conduction angle and the inverter firing angle to be changed. This provides an efficient …
