Residue Arithmetic Vlsi Array Architecture For Manipulator Pseudo-Inverse Jacobian Computation, P. R. Chang, C. S. G. Lee
Residue Arithmetic Vlsi Array Architecture For Manipulator Pseudo-Inverse Jacobian Computation, P. R. Chang, C. S. G. Lee
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Most Cartesian-based control strategies require the computation of the manipulator inverse Jacobian in real time at every sampling period. In some cases, the Jacobian matrix is not of full column or row rank due to singularity or redundant robot configuration. This requires the computation of the manipulator pseudo-inverse Jacobian in real time. The calculation of the pseudo-inverse Jacobian may become extremely sensitive to small perturbation in the data and numerical instabilities, when the Jacobian matrix is not of full column or row rank. Even if the Jacobian matrix is of full rank, the ill-conditioned problem may still plague the computation …

A New Method Of Image Compression Using Irreducible Covers Of Maximal Rectangles, Y. Cheng, S. S. G. Iyengar, R. L. Kashyap
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In recent years there has been a tremendous spurt in research and activity in finding efficient compression techniques for image processing applications. Particularly when an image is structured over a non-rectangular region it is always advantageous to define a method of covering a region by minimal numbers of maximal rectangles. Towards this objective, we analyze the binary image compression problem using irreducible cover of maximal rectangles. We also give a bound on the minimum rectangular cover problem for image compression under certain conditions that previously have not been analyzed. It is demonstrated for a simply connected image that, the irreducible …

Pseiki: A Production System Environment For Integrating Knowledge With Images, K. M. Andress, A. C. Kak
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
A description of work-in-progress on PSEIKI is presented. PSEIKI is a computer vision system designed to use multiple sources of knowledge to aid in the image understanding task. In this report we describe the concepts used in PSEIKI and how the incorporation of world knowledge is used to make PSEIKI expectation driven. The world knowledge in the system is represented as a line drawing of the expected scene. The system is implemented as a 2 panel / 6 level blackboard and uses the Dempster-Shafer formalism to accomplish inexact reasoning in a hierarchical space
Destination Tag Routing Techniques Based On A State Model For The Iadm Network, Darwen Rau, Jose A. B. Fortes, Howard Jay Siegel
Destination Tag Routing Techniques Based On A State Model For The Iadm Network, Darwen Rau, Jose A. B. Fortes, Howard Jay Siegel
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
A "state model" is proposed for solving the problem of routing and rerouting messages in the Inverse Augmented Data Manipulator (IADM) network. Using this model, necessary and sufficient conditions for the reroutability of messages are established, and then destination tag schemes are derived. These schemes are simpler, more efficient and require less complex hardware than previously proposed routing schemes. Two destination tag schemes are proposed. For one of the schemes, rerouting is totally transparent to the sender of the message and any blocked link of a given type can be avoided. Compared with previous works that deal with the same …

Preliminary Report On High-Performance Computational Structures For Robot Control, Mahibur Rahman, David G. Meyer
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this report we present some initial results of our work completed thus far on "Computational Structures for Robot Control". A SIMD architecture with the crossbar interprocessor network which achieves the parallel processing execution time lower bound of o( [a1n ]), where a1 is a constant and n is the number of manipulator joints, for the computation of the inverse dynamics problem, is discussed. A novel SIMD task scheduling algorithm that optimizes the parallel processing performance on the indicated architecture is also delineated. Simulations performed on this architecture show speedup factor of 3.4 over previous related work completed for the …

The Control Of Discrete-Time Uncertain Dynamical Systems, Mario E. Magana, Stanislaw H. Zak
The Control Of Discrete-Time Uncertain Dynamical Systems, Mario E. Magana, Stanislaw H. Zak
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this project we use the second method of Lyapunov to develop several controllers to stabilize discrete-time dynamical systems with or without parameter uncertainties and/or external disturbances. We also use the notion of a sliding mode on a preferred hyperplane, previously developed for continuous-time variable structure control systems, to stabilize discrete- time dynamical systems. In particular, feedback controllers are proposed that: (i) stabilize discrete systems with no uncertainties by forcing their state trajectories onto prespecified hyperplanes; (ii) provide a needed level of stability robustness to discrete systems with uncertainties which are modeled by cone bounded functions; (iii) robustly stabilize discrete …

The objective of the project is to raise the understanding of dark current mechanisms in GaAs-related solar cells to a level comparable to that of silicon cells. Motivation for this work arises from the observation that much of the progress in crystalline silicon cell performance has occurred as a result of a very deep knowledge of the physics controlling the cell’s dark current. Based on this knowledge, new cell structures evolved to suppress dominant dark current mechanisms. A comparable level of knowledge of GaAs cell device physics does not yet exist, but will be essential if cell performance near the …

The Fabrication, Testing And Simulation Of Germanium Thermophotovoltaic Cells, Daniel L. C. Huang, M. S. Worley, J. L. Gray, R. J. Schwartz
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
This is the final report on NRL Contract N00173-79-C-0362. The purpose of this investigation was to fabricate germanium photovoltaic cells and to examine the feasibility of using them in a thermophotovoltaic system for the generation of electrical power in space. The energy source was to be solar. Systems aspects of the collection of solar energy and rejection of waste heat were not a part of this study. The strategy employed in this investigation was the following. 1. Fabricate germanium photodiodes. 2. Carefully characterize these photodiodes. 3. Simulate the performance of these photodiodes using a detailed numerical model of the cell …

A Road Maintenance Management Information System For Counties And Cities, John D. N. Riverson, Charles F. Scholer, David Middendorf
Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications
County Highway Departments in Indiana follow guidelines approved by the State Board of Accounts, mainly for highway resource accounting and not for maintenance activity costing. The existing Daily Work Report Form was modified to help maintenance activity costing with more precise reporting of road location, equipment and material use and also for storage on a microcomputer database. The Highway Extension and Research Project for Indiana Counties and Cities (HERPICC) at Purdue University tested the recommended procedures in a pilot project with White County Highway Department in Indiana, U.S.A.. A user-friendly program was developed using the R-Base 5000 database software for …
