Cosmic: A Model For Multiprocessor Performance Analysis, William W. Carlson, Jose A. B. Fortes
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
COSMIC, the Combined Ordering Scheme Model with Isolated Components, describes the execution of specific algorithms on multiprocessors and facilitates analysis of their performance. Building upon previous modeling efforts such as Petri nets, COSMIC structures the modeling of a system along several issues including computational and overhead costs due to sequencing of operations, synchronization between operations, and contention for limited resources. This structuring allows us to isolate the performance impact associated with each issue. Finally, studying the performance of a system while executing a specific algorithm gives insight into its performance under realistic operating conditions. The model also allows us to …
The Honeycomb Architecture: Prototype Analysis And Design, James E. Hoch
The Honeycomb Architecture: Prototype Analysis And Design, James E. Hoch
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Due to the inherent potential of parallel processing, a lot of attention has focused on massively parallel computer architecture. To a large extent, the performance of a massively parallel architecture is a function of the flexibility of its communication network. The ability to configure the topology of the machine determines the ease with which problems are mapped onto the architecture. If the machine is sufficiently flexible, the architecture can be configured to match the natural structure of a wide range of problems. There are essentially four unique types of massively parallel architectures: 1. Cellular Arrays 2. Lattice Architectures [21, 30] …
Final Report: Two Dimensional Computer Simulation Of Bilateral Silicon Solar Cells, Gregory Benedict Lush, Jeffery L. Gray
Final Report: Two Dimensional Computer Simulation Of Bilateral Silicon Solar Cells, Gregory Benedict Lush, Jeffery L. Gray
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Bilateral solar cells can convert albedo light (sunlight reflected from the earth) incident on the back side of the cell to improve the power to weight ratio of satellite arrays operating in Low Earth Orbits. However, the high energy radiation trapped in the Van Allen Belt surrounding the earth limits the possible improvement of solar cell electrical output by degrading the minority carrier diffusion length. The purpose of this work is to design cells to be able to collect efficiently albedo-generated carriers at end-of-life(EOL). The FORTRAN program Solar Cell Analysis Program in Two Dimensions is used to model four cell …
Robot Control Computation In Microprocessor Systems With Multiple Arithmetic Processors, Bo Li, Shaheen Ahmad
Robot Control Computation In Microprocessor Systems With Multiple Arithmetic Processors, Bo Li, Shaheen Ahmad
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this paper we address the problem of designing a high performance robot controller with multiple arithmetic processing units (APU’s). One attractive feature about this controller is that a minimum number of special purpose hardware components are needed, and in fact off the shelf components can be used. In the controller described in this paper, one main processor (MPU) schedules a number of APU’s to produce the computational throughput. In this design an efficient scheduling algorithm plays the most important role in the system performance. DF/IHS* algorithm [8] is an efficient algorithm that solves "strong" NP-hard problems of scheduling a …
Calibration Of Wrist-Mounted Robotic Sensors By Solving Homogeneous Transform Equations Of The Form Ax=Xb, Y. C. Shiu, S. Ahmad
Calibration Of Wrist-Mounted Robotic Sensors By Solving Homogeneous Transform Equations Of The Form Ax=Xb, Y. C. Shiu, S. Ahmad
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In order to use a wrist-mounted sensor (such as a camera) for a robot task, the position, and orientation of the sensor with respect to the robot wrist frame must be known. We can find the sensor mounting position by moving the robot and observing the resulting motion of the sensor. This yields a homogeneous transform equation of the form AX=XB, where A is the change in the robot wrist position, B is the resulting sensor displacement, and X is the sensor position relative to the robot wrist. The solution to an equation of this form has one degree of …

2d Modeling Of Bipolar Junction Transistors, J. L. Gray, J. Egley
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
The purpose of this report is to summarize the progress to date on the development of a 2D computer model for bipolar junction transistors. The goals of this project, which ends December 31, 1988, can be broken into two main categories and are listed below: Code Modifications 1. Modify existing 2D solar cell simulation code to handle bipolar junction transistors. 2. Incorporate energy balance equations into the computer model. 3. Incorporate transient and small signal ac analyses. Code Applications 1. Assess performance differences between Delco small and large thin epi devices. 2. Evaluate a polysilicon modification of the thin epi …

Study Of Numeric Saturation Effects In Linear Digital Compensators, C. A. Maccarley, D. G. Meyer
Study Of Numeric Saturation Effects In Linear Digital Compensators, C. A. Maccarley, D. G. Meyer
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Saturation arithmetic is often used in finite precision digital compensators to circumvent instability due to radix overflow. The saturation limits in the digital structure lead to nonlinear behavior during large state transients. It is shown that if all recursive loops in a compensator are interrupted by at least one saturation limit, then there exists a bounded external scaling rule which assures against overflow at all nodes in the structure. Design methods are proposed based on the generalized second method of Lyapunov, which take the internal saturation limits into account to implement a robust dual-mode suboptimal control for bounded input plants. …
Nonparametric Estimation Of The Bayes Error, Keinosuke Fukunaga, Donald M. Hummels
Nonparametric Estimation Of The Bayes Error, Keinosuke Fukunaga, Donald M. Hummels
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
This thesis is concerned with the performance of nonparametric classifiers and their application to the estimation of the Rayes error. Although the behavior of these classifiers as the number of preclassified design samples becomes infinite is well understood, very little is known regarding their finite sample error performance. Here, we examine the performance of Parzen and k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) classifiers, relating the expected error rates to the size of the design set and the various, design parameters (kernel size and shape, value of k, distance metric for nearest neighbor calculation, etc.). These results lead to several significant improvements in the …
