Spectral Feature Design In High Dimensional Multispectral Data, Chih-Chien Thomas Chen, David A. Landgrebe Aug 1988

Spectral Feature Design In High Dimensional Multispectral Data, Chih-Chien Thomas Chen, David A. Landgrebe

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The High resolution imaging Spectrometer (HIRIS) is designed to acquire images simultaneously in 192 spectral bands in the 0.4-2,5 μm wavelength region. It will make possible the collection of essentially continuous reflectance spectra at a spectral resolution sufficient to extract significantly enhanced amounts of information from return signals as compared to existing systems. By effectively utilizing these signals, direct identification of the parameters of species can be achieved and their subtle changes can also be observed and measured. The advantages of such high dimensional data come at a cost of increased system and data complexity. For example, since the finer …

Impedance Measurements Of Underground Cable Systems, Robert N. Bruce Aug 1988

Impedance Measurements Of Underground Cable Systems, Robert N. Bruce

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This paper documents a series of experimental impedance measurements made on underground residential distribution (URD) power components which included 15 KV class power cables, elbow connectors and a padmount transformer. The measurements were performed at high frequency, i.e. the MHz frequency region. The purpose was to study how the impedance of these devices behaves at high frequencies. Two port transmission parameters and network analysis were used to study the characteristics of these types of systems at these high frequencies.

Continuing Education At Purdue University: The First Hundred Years (1874–1974), Frank K. Burrin Jul 1988

Continuing Education At Purdue University: The First Hundred Years (1874–1974), Frank K. Burrin

Continuing Education

The History of Continuing Education at Purdue: The First Hundred Years (1874–1974) was compiled from documents and manuscripts left by Dr. Frank K. Burrin. After his retirement, Dr. Burrin set himself the task of writing a coherent, full-length history of Purdue's contributions to continuing education. Unfortunately, his project was left incomplete at his death. Fortunately, his friends and colleagues at the university were unwilling to let his dream die with him. The present monograph is the result of their concern.

The fragmentary nature of the surviving manuscript made it impossible either to reconstruct Dr. Burrin's original plan for the organization …

The Pseiki Report—Version 2. Evidence Accumulation And Flow Of Control In A Hierarchical Spatial Reasoning System, K. M. Andress, A. C. Kak

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A fundamental goal of computer vision is the development of systems capable of carrying out scene interpretation while taking into account all the available knowledge. In this report, we have focused on how the interpretation task may be aided by expected-scene information which, in most cases, would not be in registration with the perceived scene. In this report, we describe PSEIKI, a framework for expectation-driven interpretation of image data. PSEIKI builds abstraction hierarchies in image data using, for cues, supplied abstraction hierarchies in a scene expectation map. Hypothesized abstractions in the image data are geometrically compared with the known abstractions …

Use Of Image Processing Techniques For The Analysis Of Echocardiographic Images, Enrique Garcia-Melendo, Edward J. Delp Jul 1988

Use Of Image Processing Techniques For The Analysis Of Echocardiographic Images, Enrique Garcia-Melendo, Edward J. Delp

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Echocardiography is a medical imaging modality that uses ultrasound in order to obtain cross sectional views of the heart. The basic problem in the use of echocardiography is the ability to obtain a reliable set of physical parameters related to cardiac status, so that assessment of heart disease can be performed automatically. This work overviews different image processing techniques used in the analysis of two dimensional echocardiographic images. After reviewing how the echocardiographic image formation process works, an outline of the general processing steps from image acquisition to automatic detection of important features is presented. Special emphasis on cardiac image …

Rule-Based Approach To Binocular Stereopsis, S. Tanaka, A. C. Kak Jul 1988

Rule-Based Approach To Binocular Stereopsis, S. Tanaka, A. C. Kak

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This research is motivated by a desire to integrate some of the diverse, yet complimentary, developments that have taken place during the past few years in the area of passive stereo vision. On the one hand, we have approaches based on matching zero-crossings along epipolar lines, and, on the other, people have proposed techniques that match directly higher level percepts, such as line elements and other geometrical forms. Our rule-based program is a modest attempt at integrating these different approaches into a single program. Such integration was made necessary by the fact that no single method by itself appears capable …

Improving Cache Performance By Selective Cache Bypass, Chi-Hung Chi, Henry Dietz Jul 1988

Improving Cache Performance By Selective Cache Bypass, Chi-Hung Chi, Henry Dietz

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In traditional cache-based computers, all memory references are made through cache. However, a significant number of items which are referenced in a program are referenced so infrequently that other cache traffic is certain to “bump” these items from cache before they are referenced again. I n such cases, not only is there no benefit in placing the item in cache, but there is the additional overhead of “bumping” some other item out of cache to make room for this useless cache entry. Where a cache line is larger than a processor word, there is an additional penalty in loading the …

Final Report On Nasa Grant Nag 3-433. Solar Energy Conversion Through The Interaction Of Plasmons With Tunnel Junctions. Part A Solar Cell Analysis. Part B Photoconductor Analysis, R. E. Welsh, R. J. Schwartz Jul 1988

Final Report On Nasa Grant Nag 3-433. Solar Energy Conversion Through The Interaction Of Plasmons With Tunnel Junctions. Part A Solar Cell Analysis. Part B Photoconductor Analysis, R. E. Welsh, R. J. Schwartz

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A novel solar cell utilizing guided optical waves and tunnel junctions has been analyzed to determine its feasibility. From this analysis, it appears that the limits imposed upon conventional multiple cell systems also limit this novel solar cell. Due to this limitation, it appears that the relative simplicity of the conventional multiple cell systems over the novel solar cell make the conventional multiple cell systems the more promising candidate for improvement. In the course of this investigation, it was discovered that some superlattice structures studied could be incorporated into an infrared photodetector. This photoconductor appears to be promising as a …

Harmonic Impact Of Rectifiers Served By Unbalanced Three-Phase Sources, Kraig J. Olejniczak Jul 1988

Harmonic Impact Of Rectifiers Served By Unbalanced Three-Phase Sources, Kraig J. Olejniczak

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A converter is a rectifier or inverter which is intended to transfer electrical energy between AC and DC busses. A common industrial converter usually employs the familiar Graetz bridge configuration and usually has a rating in the kilowatt through lower megawatt range. The operation of such a device is nominally in the balanced three-phase mode in which the phase currents are nonsinusoidal. The Fourier series components of these currents, or harmonics, have been studied extensively, but relatively little has been done in the unbalanced operating mode. The principal goal of this research is to examine how unbalance in magnitude and …

The work described in this report is directed at understanding quantum transport phenomena in sub-micron heterostructure devices, at developing computational techniques for modeling such devices, and at applying these techniques to develop new device concepts. During the past year we have (l) applied a previously developed collisionless quantum device model (SEQUAL) and Monte Carlo model (DEMON) to the design and study of heterojunction bipolar transistors (Chapter 2); (2) developed a technique for the analysis of arbitrarily shaped quantum devices with elastic scattering (Chapter 3); and (3) developed an approach for incorporating inelastic dissipative processes in quantum transport theory (Chapter 4). …

Analysis And Modeling Of A Single-Phased Bifilar-Wound Brushless Dg Motor, Jeffrey S. Meyer Jul 1988

Analysis And Modeling Of A Single-Phased Bifilar-Wound Brushless Dg Motor, Jeffrey S. Meyer

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A single-phase brushless dc motor utilizing a bifilar stator winding and having asymmetrical stator pole faces is investigated. The form of the permanent-magnet component of the stator winding flux linkage is analyzed considering the asymmetry of the stator pole faces. Equations describing the electromechanical dynamics of the motor are then derived along with an expression for the electromagnetic torque. The requirements of the dc-to-ac inverter which drives the motor are determined. Using the expression for electromagnetic torque and inverter characteristics, the form of the so-called static electromagnetic torque is analyzed. The so-called cogging torque is established, and in conjunction with …

Analysis Of Image Sequence Data With Applications To Two-Dimensional Echocardiography, C. Henry Chu, Edward J. Delp Jul 1988

Analysis Of Image Sequence Data With Applications To Two-Dimensional Echocardiography, C. Henry Chu, Edward J. Delp

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Digital two-dimensional echocardiography is an ultrasonic imaging technique that is used as an increasingly important noninvasive technique in the comprehensive characterization of the left ventricular structure and function. Quantitative analysis often uses heart wall motion and other shape attributes such as the heart wall thickness, heart chamber area, and the variation of these attributes throughout the cardiac cycle. These analyses require the complete determination of the heart wall boundaries. Poor image quality and large amount of noise makes computer detection of the boundaries difficult. An algorithm to detect both the inner and outer heart wall boundaries is presented. The algorithm …

Pulse-Width Modulation Control Of A Three-Phase Inverter, Shawn M. O'Connor Jul 1988

Pulse-Width Modulation Control Of A Three-Phase Inverter, Shawn M. O'Connor

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The goal of this thesis was to design, construct, and prove operational a three-phase inverter. This inverter was to incorporate pulse-width modulation control and was to function as a classroom demonstration unit. Before constructing the full three- phase inverter, a single-phase inverter was constructed with four Darlingtons. A pulse-width modulation scheme was developed and applied to the single-phase inverter. Upon slight modification of the control scheme, controllable single-phase inverter operation was demonstrated. With this insight gained, a pulse-width modulation scheme was developed for a three-phase inverter. After adding a third set of Darlingtons to the initial four, the pulse-width modulation …

Shape Recognition: A Landmark-Based Approach, Nirwan Ansari, Edward J. Delp Jul 1988

Shape Recognition: A Landmark-Based Approach, Nirwan Ansari, Edward J. Delp

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Shape recognition has applications in computer vision tasks such as industrial automated inspection and automatic target recognition. When objects are occluded, many recognition methods that use global information will fail. To recognize partially occluded objects, we represent each object by a Set of landmarks. The landmarks of an object are points of interest which have important shape attributes and are usually obtained from the object boundary. In this study, we use high curvature points along an object boundary as the landmarks of the object. Given a scene consisting of partially occluded objects, the hypothesis of a model object in the …
