Extending Static Synchronization Beyond Simd And Vliw, Henry G. Dietz, Thomas Schwederski Jun 1988

Extending Static Synchronization Beyond Simd And Vliw, Henry G. Dietz, Thomas Schwederski

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A key advantage of SIMD (Single Instruction stream, Multiple Data stream) architectures is that synchronization is effected statically at compile-time, hence the execution-time cost of synchronization between “processes” is essentially zero. VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) machines are successful in large part because they preserve this property while providing more flexibility in terms of what kinds of operations can be parallelized. In this paper, we propose a new kind of architecture —- the “static barrier MIMD” or SBM — which can be viewed as a further generalization of the parallel execution abilities of static synchronization machines. Barrier MIMDs are asynchronous …

Computer Modeling Of Electronic Properties In Thin Film Silicon Hydrogen-Alloy And Its Application To Solar Cells, Jongwoo Park, Richard J. Schwartz, Jefrey L. Gray Jun 1988

Computer Modeling Of Electronic Properties In Thin Film Silicon Hydrogen-Alloy And Its Application To Solar Cells, Jongwoo Park, Richard J. Schwartz, Jefrey L. Gray

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A self-consistent numerical model for hydrogenated amorphous silicon(a-Si:H) has been developed to aid in the understanding of the details of the electronic behavior of silicon-hydrogen alloy material and the characteristic features of devices made from it. A gap state model incorporating exponential tail state s and Gaussian distributed dangling bond states and doping states based on the experimental results and theoretical background is proposed. Detailed transport equations including charge trapping and recombination processes are formulated, and solved numerically in one-dimension. Since a large number of material and geometrical parameters are involved, it is possible to fit experimental data with more …

Complete Specification Of Ddm Mechanisms, Thomas L. Casavant, Weng H. Cheong, Ali Sajassi Jun 1988

Complete Specification Of Ddm Mechanisms, Thomas L. Casavant, Weng H. Cheong, Ali Sajassi

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The specification of DDM (Distributed Decision-Making) algorithms is addressed. The modeling technique presented is based on well-known extensions to Petri-Nets (PNs). Transition-enabling functions with a domain corresponding to the marking of a net are used to express the semantics of decision-making. Furthermore, the algorithm structural characteristics of global state representation and topology are incorporated. Finally, the dynamic nature of evolution of system state, interaction with processes external to the computation, and the interprocess communication aspects of the mechanism are also modeled. The elements of analysis associated with this model are described, but not detailed in the scope of this paper.

Guide To Revenue Calculations: Local Option Highway User Tax 1988, Herpicc May 1988

Guide To Revenue Calculations: Local Option Highway User Tax 1988, Herpicc

Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications

This guide is provided to explain the output generated by the computer programs and to suggest ways in which the results can be adapted to specific LOHUT proposals before a County Council. The 1988 LOHUT revenue projections are of special interest because of House Enrolled Act Number 1295. This act (IC 8-11-5) granted each county authority to bond for county roads or bridges, but only if a county has first adopted a LOHUT -- the excise surtax (IC 6-3.5-4) and wheel tax (IC 6-3.5-5).

HERPICC neither endorses nor opposes passage of a LOHUT. The revenue projections it provides are intended …

Study Of Target Enhancement Algorithms To Counter The Hostile Nuclear Environment, Cameron H. G. Wright, Edward J. Delp May 1988

Study Of Target Enhancement Algorithms To Counter The Hostile Nuclear Environment, Cameron H. G. Wright, Edward J. Delp

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A necessary requirement of strategic defense is the detection of incoming nuclear warheads in an environment that may include nuclear detonations of undetected or missed target warheads. A computer model is described which simulates incoming warheads as distant endoatmospheric targets. A model of the expected electromagnetic noise present in a nuclear environment is developed using estimates of the probability distributions. Predicted atmospheric effects are also included. Various image enhancement algorithms, both linear and nonlinear, are discussed concerning their anticipated ability to suppress the noise and atmospheric effects of the nuclear environment. These algorithms are then tested, using the combined target …

Molecular Beam Epitaxy Of Znse On Gaas Epilayers For Use In Mis Devices, George D. Studtmann, Robert L. Gunshor, Leslie A. Kolodziejski, Michael R. Melloch May 1988

Molecular Beam Epitaxy Of Znse On Gaas Epilayers For Use In Mis Devices, George D. Studtmann, Robert L. Gunshor, Leslie A. Kolodziejski, Michael R. Melloch

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The use of ZnSe on GaAs epilayers (epi) as a pseudo-insulator in field effect device applications is demonstrated. The passivating ZnSe layers are grown on GaAs(epi) by interrupted growth molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) using two separate MBE machines. A thin layer of amorphous arsenic protects the GaAs(epi) during transfer between the MBE systems. When nucleated on the GaAs(epi), the ZnSe grows layer-by-layer as revealed by the reflection high energy electron diffraction pattern generated in the II-VI MBE growth chamber. A study of intensity oscillations in the electron diffraction pattern is further used to understand the initial growth stages of ZnSe …

Statistical Classifier Design And Evaluation, Keinosuke Fukunaga, Raymond Reynolds Hayes May 1988

Statistical Classifier Design And Evaluation, Keinosuke Fukunaga, Raymond Reynolds Hayes

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This thesis is concerned with the design and evaluation of statistical classifiers. This problem has an optimal solution with a priori knowledge of the underlying probability distributions. Here, we examine the expected performance of parametric classifiers designed from a finite set of training samples and tested under various conditions. By investigating the statistical properties of the performance bias when tested on the true distributions, we have isolated the effects of the individual design components (i.e., the number of training samples, the dimensionality, and the parameters of the underlying distributions). These results have allowed us to establish a firm theoretical foundation …

A. C. Power Losses In Mov Surge Arrestors, Alan J. Engelmann, W. L. Weeks May 1988

A. C. Power Losses In Mov Surge Arrestors, Alan J. Engelmann, W. L. Weeks

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

It was the objective of this study to measure power losses occurring in MOV surge arrestors as they were subjected to various voltage Excitations. In particular, power losses were observed in two MOV devices as sinusoidal voltages of different magnitudes were applied, at various frequencies in the range of typical power frequencies and common harmonics. Power losses were also observed in an MOV device for applied voltages consisting of the sum of 60 Hertz sinusoids and a single harmonic. The measurement procedure consisted of obtaining digital records representing the waveforms of voltage across and current through the MOV device during …

Partitioning Of Uniform Dependency Algorithms For Parallel Execution On Mimd/ Systolic Systems, Weijia Shang, Jose A. B. Fortes Apr 1988

Partitioning Of Uniform Dependency Algorithms For Parallel Execution On Mimd/ Systolic Systems, Weijia Shang, Jose A. B. Fortes

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

An algorithm can be modeled as an index set and a set of dependence vectors. Each index vector in the index set indexes a computation of the algorithm. If the execution of a computation depends on the execution of another computation, then this dependency is represented as the difference between the index vectors of the computations. The dependence matrix corresponds to a matrix where each column is a dependence vector. An independent partition of the index set is such that there are no dependencies between computations that belong to different blocks of the partition. This report considers uniform dependence algorithms …

Emulation Of A Complex Instruction Set Computer With A Reduced Instruction Set Computer, K. J. Mcneley, V. M. Milutinovic' Apr 1988

Emulation Of A Complex Instruction Set Computer With A Reduced Instruction Set Computer, K. J. Mcneley, V. M. Milutinovic'

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This paper analyzes some of the difficulties of emulating a Complex Instruction Set Computer (CISC) with a Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC). It will be shown that although the speed advantage of a RISC is sacrificed, a CISC can be emulated with the exception of software constructs that support nonstandard hardware interfaces. Some concrete examples will be used to help illustrate the execution- time bottlenecks as well as to discuss possible solutions from an architectural point of view for both Silicon and Gallium Arsenide (GaAs). In addition, it will be shown that the most efficient method of emulation involves debugging …

Emulating A Cisc With Gaas Bit-Slice Components, Erin Handgen, Bryan Robbins Apr 1988

Emulating A Cisc With Gaas Bit-Slice Components, Erin Handgen, Bryan Robbins

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Currently, complex instruction set computers (CISCs), are used in a wide variety of applications ranging from desktop computers to aircraft guidance systems. The amount of software available for these CISCs is rather large, and exists in both high-level language and assembly language forms. However, some system designers may need CISCs that are more environmentally tolerant and/or faster than current silicon processors, and may be looking towards GaAs as a possible solution. Aerospace engineers and defense engineers are among this elite group. Some areas where the advantages of GaAs are needed over current Si technology include stabilization and control, telemetry, and …
