This project’s objective is to improve our fundamental understanding of the generation, recombination, and transport of carriers within III-V homo- and heterostructures. The research consists of fabricating and characterizing solar cell “ building blocks” such as junctions and heterojunctions as well as basic measurements of material parameters. A significant effort is also being directed at characterizing loss mechanisms in high-quality, III-V solar cells fabricated in industrial research laboratories throughout the United States. The project’s goal is to use our understanding of the device physics of high-efficiency cell components to maximize cell efficiency. A related goal is the demonstration of new …
Propagation Of Nonsinusoidal Waveforms In Power Systems, Robert Sparks
Propagation Of Nonsinusoidal Waveforms In Power Systems, Robert Sparks
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Several computationally efficient and innovative methods for the calculation of power system voltages due to nonsinusoidal demand currents are studied. The method is useful for power quality calculations. The method is introduced by using Laplace transform analysis to simplify the convolution of the transfer impedances and the demand currents. An iterative numerical inverse Laplace transform method is briefly examined. However, the problem characteristics allow Fourier transform analysis to be used. Furthermore, the fast Fourier transform is used to approximate the continuous Fourier transform. This discrete transform analysis method proves to be conveniently suitable to the problem definition. More importantly the …

RSSIM is a comprehensive simulation tool for the study of multispectral remotely sensed images and associated system parameters. It has been developed to allow the creation of realistic multispectral images based on detailed models of the surface the atmosphere, and the sensor. It also can be used to study the effect of system parameters on an output measure, such as classification accuracy or class separability. In this report the operation and use of RSSIM is described. In this first section the implementation of the program is discussed, followed by examples of its use. In section 2 the structure and algorithms …
Performance Analysis Of Hardware Barrier Synchronization, M. O'Keefe, H. Dietz
Performance Analysis Of Hardware Barrier Synchronization, M. O'Keefe, H. Dietz
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Synchronization among cooperating processors is a critical issue in the performance of high speed multiprocessors. For current Multiple Instruction stream Multiple Data stream (MIMD) computers synchronization cost is high. Hence, these architectures can execute only large granularity parallelism efficiently. In this report we study a new hardware synchronization technique, known as a hardware barrier. Machines using this technique are known as barrier MIMDs. Analytic and simulation studies are employed to show that hardware barrier synchronization can outperform the more common directed synchronization techniques. Barrier synchronization can be viewed as a static synchronization mechanism similar to the implicit synchronization of Very …
Noise Cancellation Method For Improvement Of Power Quality, Paul Albert Kuban
Noise Cancellation Method For Improvement Of Power Quality, Paul Albert Kuban
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Chapter 1 of this thesis presents a discussion of common power system disturbances, including a section on the causes and effects of harmonic distortion Several standard methods for eliminating these disturbances are also discussed. In Chapter 2, a presentation of filter design techniques provides background information leading to the introduction of the proposed noise cancellation method. In the proposed circuit, the fundamental frequency component of the input waveform is attenuated by the use of a band stop filter.. The remaining distortion component is then inverted and coupled to the original input waveform by means of a series transformer. Chapter 3 …
Performance Characteristics Of Switched Reluctance Motor Drive, M. Moallem, C. M. Ong
Performance Characteristics Of Switched Reluctance Motor Drive, M. Moallem, C. M. Ong
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this report, methods and computational techniques for predicting the static and steady state characteristics of a switched reluctance motor drive are developed and the predicted characteristics are compared with experimental results. Because of high local saturation and narrow airgap in the SR motor, accurate calculation of the static characteristics of the torque, flux linkage, inductances, and speed emf from its FE field solution is not straightforward. For the purpose of this study, a two-dimensional finite element model is developed to handle the nonlinear magnetic field inside the machine. Based on a thorough study of the potential sources of errors …

The Dq Analysis Of A Variable Reluctance Stepper Motor, David J. Kish
The Dq Analysis Of A Variable Reluctance Stepper Motor, David J. Kish
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Variable reluctance stepper motors are commonly used in applications where incremental motion is desired. Recently, these motors have been used in situations which call for a large stepping rate; so large in fact, that the motor hums continuously. Although the equations which describe the stepper motor in this mode are decoupled, they are not time invariant. In order to eliminate the time varying terms, Park’s transformation is applied to the motor equations. It is found that this transformation does not render the system equations time invariant, so an averaging technique is employed which does provide the desired time invariance. The …
Algorithm Choice For Multiple-Query Evaluation, Myong H. Kang, Henry G. Dietz
Algorithm Choice For Multiple-Query Evaluation, Myong H. Kang, Henry G. Dietz
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Traditional query optimization concentrates on the optimization of the execution of each individual query. More recently, it has been observed that by considering a sequence of multiple queries some additional high-level optimizations can be performed. Once these optimizations have been performed, each operation is translated into executable code. The fundamental insight in this paper is that significant improvements can be gained by careful choice of the algorithm to be used for each operation. This choice is not merely based on efficiency of algorithms for individual operations, but rather on the efficiency of the algorithm choices for the entire multiple-query evaluation. …
Adaptive Networks As A Model For Human Speech Development, M. Fernando Tenorio, M. Daniel Tom, Richard G. Schwartz
Adaptive Networks As A Model For Human Speech Development, M. Fernando Tenorio, M. Daniel Tom, Richard G. Schwartz
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Unrestricted English text can be converted to speech through the use of a look up table, or through a parallel feedforward network of deterministic processing units. Here, we reproduce the network structure used in NETtalk. Several experiments are carried out to determine which characteristics of the network are responsible for which learning behavior, and how closely that maps human speech development. The network is also trained with different levels of speech complexity, and with a second language. The results are shown to be highly dependent on statistical characteristics of the input.

Modeling, Simulation, And Analysis Of Optical Remote Sensing Systems, John P. Kerekes, David A. Landgrebe
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Remote Sensing of the Earth's resources from space-based sensors has evolved in the past twenty years from a scientific experiment to a commonly used technological tool. The scientific applications and engineering aspects of remote sensing systems have been studied extensively. However, most of these studies have been aimed at understanding individual aspects of the remote sensing process while relatively few have studied their interrelations. A motivation for studying these interrelationships has arisen with the advent of highly sophisticated configurable sensors as part of the Earth Observing System (EOS) proposed by NASA for the 1990's. These instruments represent a tremendous advance …
Identification Of Concealed Insect Infestations Using A Passive Ultrasound Monitor, Richard E. Klaassen, Eric S. Furgason
Identification Of Concealed Insect Infestations Using A Passive Ultrasound Monitor, Richard E. Klaassen, Eric S. Furgason
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Concealed insect infestations in stored grain are responsible for large economic losses worldwide, and have traditionally been difficult to detect arid quantify. A simple method of infestation detection and quantification has been developed, taking advantage of the ultrasonic emissions generated by the feeding activity of the insects. The acoustic signals generated by the insects are characterized as bursts of energy in the frequency range of 5 to 75 kHz, varying with the variety of seed being examined. These signals can be detected reliably by monitoring the seeds for sounds in a frequency band between 30 and 50 kHz. The stage …

Digital Measurement Of Partial Discharge, James Patrick Steiner, W. L. Weeks
Digital Measurement Of Partial Discharge, James Patrick Steiner, W. L. Weeks
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Various new measurement techniques have been developed for a high voltage phenomenon referred to as partial discharge. Partial discharge is a localized breakdown of the high voltage insulation system which is observed as low level, random emissions. Both electrical and acoustic emissions have been measured in underground power cables, solid cast power transformers and in lumped specimens. Typical problems complicating the measurements are the randomness of the emission, high levels of interference and extreme distortion of the signal by the propagation path. Various signal processing techniques have been adapted to the measurement of partial discharge. The techniques investigated are capable …

Most children do not know about, nor care about, "food value," "vitamins," "minerals," or "food groups,' making it important for parents to provide guidance to their children to help them eat right. This publication will explore the ways in which parents influence children's eating habits and suggest some specific techniques parents can use to guide children as they learn about nutrition. How can parents help children to appreciate and enjoy foods that are good for them?

Tutorial On Lisp Object- Oriented Programming For Blackboard Computation (Solving The Radar Tracking Problem), P. R. Kersten, A. C. Kak
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
This exposition is a tutorial on how object-oriented programming in Lisp can be used for programming a blackboard. Since we have used Franz Lisp and since object oriented programming in Franz is carried out via flavors, the exposition demonstrates how flavors can be used for this purpose. The reader should note that the different approaches to object-oriented programming share considerable similarity and, therefore, the exposition should be helpful to even those who may not wish to use flavors. We have used the radar tracking problem as a ‘medium’ for explaining the concepts underlying blackboard programming. The blackboard database is constructed …

Control Of Dynamic Systems Via Neural Networks, Stanislaw H. Zak, S. Mehdi Madani-Esfahani, Stefen Hui
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
This report is devoted to the problem of controlling a class of linear time-invariant dynamic systems via controllers based on additive neural network models. In particular, the tracking and stabilization problems are considered. First, we show how to transform the problem of tracking a reference signal by a control system into the stabilization problem. Then, some concepts from the variable structure control theory are utilized to construct stabilizing controllers. In order to facilitate the stability analysis of the closed-loop systems we employ a special state space transformation. This transformation allows us also to reveal connections between the proposed controllers and …
