Physical Mechanisms Contributing To Nonlinear Responsivity In Silicon Concentrator Solar Cells, Edmund K. Banghart Nov 1989

Physical Mechanisms Contributing To Nonlinear Responsivity In Silicon Concentrator Solar Cells, Edmund K. Banghart

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Comparison of experimental data with the results of present models indicates that silicon solar cell operation at high solar concentration is not completely understood. That silicon concentrator cells are not fully understood was first recognized as nonlinearities experimentally observed in the response of the short circuit current to increasing solar concentration. In order to interpret the experimentally observed sublinear responsivities, a review in the literature of the physical mechanisms which have significance for solar cell operation at high solar intensities is essential. These phenomena include bandgap narrowing, Auger recombination, carrier diffusion, and the loss of base conductivity modulation. In this …

Predicting Fault Transients On Underground Residential Distribution Systems - A Project Of The Purdue Electric Power Center, L. M. Rux, W. L. Weeks Nov 1989

Predicting Fault Transients On Underground Residential Distribution Systems - A Project Of The Purdue Electric Power Center, L. M. Rux, W. L. Weeks

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

This thesis addresses the problem of calculating and utilizing the voltage and current transients that may occur in underground residential distribution (URD) systems. A computational model for such systems is proposed and evaluated by comparisons to experimental results. The propagation characteristics of standard URD cables are complex but central to the computational model. The specific objective of this study was to determine whether a relatively simple approximation for the cable propagation constant is accurate enough that, when incorporated into the computational model for the transients resulting from a fault in the system, the resulting fault transient can be utilized to …

The Purdue University Program for Heterostructure Simulation in Two Dimensions (PUPHS2D) solves Poisson's equation and the electron and hole continuity equations within a two-dimensional heterostructure device. The program will compute the electrostatic potential, electron and hole densities, recombination rate, and other quantities of interest as a function of applied bias. Like its predecessor, version 2.0 allows extensive analysis of solar cells, including computation of the current-voltage characteristics of two-terminal devices, solar cell parameters, quantum efficiency, and current versus solar intensity. Extensions to version 2.Q include transient analysis and bipolar transistor capability. The heterojunction bipolar transistor routines allow computation of dc …

Evaluation Of Silicon Selective Epitaxial Growth Defects Using The Sidewall Gate Controlled Diode, W. A. Klaasen, G. W. Neudeck

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Selective Epitaxial Growth (SEG) of silicon has shown great potential for advanced integrated circuit technologies. Before SEG can be fully utilized, sidewall defects must be reduced or at least controlled. The phenomena responsible for these defects were not understood, therefore more quantification of the sidewall defects is necessary. Walled diodes have been used to measure the sidewall leakage currents, but are susceptible to problems which make them poor devices for comparing different sidewall interfaces. A new device structure, the Sidewall Gate Controlled Diode (SGCD), is presented for the quantification of the defects near the SEG sidewall. The SGCD is shown …

Parallel, Self-Organizing, Hierarchical Neural Networks, O. K. Ersoy, D. Hong Sep 1989

Parallel, Self-Organizing, Hierarchical Neural Networks, O. K. Ersoy, D. Hong

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A new neural network architecture called the parallel self-organizing hierarchical neural network (PSHNN) is discussed. The PSHNN involves a number of stages in which each stage can be a particular neural network (SNN). At the end of each SNN, error detection is carried out, and a number of input vectors are rejected. Between 2 SNN’s there is a nonlinear transformation of those input vectors rejected by the first SNN. The PSHNN has many desirable properties such as optimized system complexity in the sense of minimized self-organizing number of stages, high classification accuracy, minimized learning and recall times, and truly parallel …
