Students As Partners In The Library: Creating Meaningful Information Literacy Instruction Together, Rachel Fundator, Samantha Legrand
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
- In an effort to create more student-centered and inclusive learning environments, instructors are using pedagogical approaches, such as students-as-partners (SAP), to bring student voices into the conversation about teaching and learning and to invite students to make meaningful choices about what happens in the classroom (Cook-Sather et al., 2019). Libraries can and should explore ways to incorporate SAP into our offerings (Salisbury et al., 2020). In libraries, student partners can become co-creators of information as they develop goals and curricula and bring interdisciplinary perspectives from across the institution to the development of information literacy (IL) programs. By inviting students into …

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
This work presents a framework that allows Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) to avoid dynamic obstacles through initial training on an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) and cross-domain retraining on a USV. This is achieved by integrating a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) agent that generates high-level control commands and leveraging a neural network based model predictive controller (NN-MPC) to reach target waypoints and reject disturbances. A Deep Q Network (DQN) utilized in this framework is trained in a ground environment using a Turtlebot robot and retrained in a water environment using the BREAM USV in the Gazebo simulator to avoid dynamic obstacles. …

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Hyperspectral imaging acquires data in both the spatial and frequency domains to offer abundant physical or biological information. However, conventional hyperspectral imaging has intrinsic limitations of bulky instruments, slow data acquisition rate, and spatiospectral trade-off. Here we introduce hyperspectral learning for snapshot hyperspectral imaging in which sampled hyperspectral data in a small subarea are incorporated into a learning algorithm to recover the hypercube. Hyperspectral learning exploits the idea that a photograph is more than merely a picture and contains detailed spectral information. A small sampling of hyperspectral data enables spectrally informed learning to recover a hypercube from a red–green–blue (RGB) …

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
With the proliferation of canine-assisted interventions and the emphasis placed on the impact of these sessions in bolstering the well-being of visitors to sessions, especially university students, it can be easy to overlook just how participating in one of these sessions is experienced by participants. Capturing participants’ experiences is important as this holds the potential to inform program design and delivery and elucidate mechanisms within the intervention that were found to be especially efficacious. Forging new empirical terrain, this study explored the insights and perceptions of 469 undergraduate students who participated in a virtual canine-assisted stress-reduction intervention at a mid-size …

Hybrid Statistical And Machine Learning Methods For Daily Evapotranspiration Modeling, Erdem Kucuktopcu
Hybrid Statistical And Machine Learning Methods For Daily Evapotranspiration Modeling, Erdem Kucuktopcu
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
Machine learning (ML) models, including artificial neural networks (ANN), generalized neural regression networks (GRNN), and adaptive neuro-fuzzy interface systems (ANFIS), have received considerable attention for their ability to provide accurate predictions in various problem domains. However, these models may produce inconsistent results when solving linear problems. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes hybridizations of ML and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models to provide a more accurate and general forecasting model for evapotranspiration (ET0). The proposed models are developed and tested using daily ET0 data collected over 11 years (2010–2020) in the Samsun province of Türkiye. The results show …

Self-report assessments are used frequently in higher education to assess a variety of constructs, including attitudes, opinions, knowledge, and competence. Systems thinking is an example of one competence often measured using self-report assessments where individuals answer several questions about their perceptions of their own skills, habits, or daily decisions. In this study, we define systems thinking as the ability to see the world as a complex interconnected system where different parts can influence each other, and the interrelationships determine system outcomes. An alternative, less-common, assessment approach is to measure skills directly by providing a scenario about an unstructured problem and …

Existing reaction transition state (TS) databases are comparatively small and lack chemical diversity. Here, this data gap has been addressed using the concept of a graphically-defined model reaction to comprehensively characterize a reaction space associated with C, H, O, and N containing molecules with up to 10 heavy (non-hydrogen) atoms. The resulting dataset is composed of 176,992 organic reactions possessing at least one validated TS, activation energy, heat of reaction, reactant and product geometries, frequencies, and atom-mapping. For 33,032 reactions, more than one TS was discovered by conformational sampling, allowing conformational errors in TS prediction to be assessed. Data is …

Direct Van Der Waals Simulation (Dvs) Of Phase-Transforming Fluids, Tianyi Hu, Hao Wang, Hector Gomez
Direct Van Der Waals Simulation (Dvs) Of Phase-Transforming Fluids, Tianyi Hu, Hao Wang, Hector Gomez
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
We present the method of direct van der Waals simulation (DVS) to study computationally flows with liquid-vapor phase transformations. Our approach is based on a discretization of the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations, which couple flow dynamics with van der Waals’ nonequilibrium thermodynamic theory of phase transformations, and opens an opportunity for first-principles simulation of a wide range of boiling and cavitating flows. The proposed algorithm enables unprecedented simulations of the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations involving cavitating flows at strongly under-critical conditions and (105) Reynolds number. The proposed technique provides a pathway for a fundamental understanding of phase-transforming flows with multiple applications in science, engineering, …
