Transtrauma: Conceptualizing The Lived Experiences Of Vietnamese American Youth, Khánh Lê May 2023

Transtrauma: Conceptualizing The Lived Experiences Of Vietnamese American Youth, Khánh Lê

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Drawing on empirical data from qualitative research I conducted with eight Vietnamese American youth in the Fall of 2020, this paper forwards transtrauma, a new framework for conceptualizing and understanding the lived experiences of Vietnamese American youth. The concept of transtrauma goes beyond the pathologizing of individual trauma, to examine how structures of domination inflict and extend trauma in marginalized communities, such as that of Vietnamese American communities. Transtrauma transcends the overt and linear focus on trauma as a single experience and the examination of how institutionalized violence by nation states shapes the experiences of Vietnamese Americans. This conceptualization …

Reviews Of The Shared Room And The Most Beautiful Thing, Bao Diep

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Grief and Loss are often seen as taboo subjects to discuss openly in many cultures. However, grief is universal, perpetual, and complex. Grief can take many forms and depend on the nature of the attachment between the survivor and the dead (people, animals, living things). When Loss happens, the survivor’s attachment will influence the shape and level of grief. Kao Kalia Yang (2020) has brought the topic of attachment, grief and loss to her children’s books, The Shared Room and The Most Beautiful Things, to initiate this difficult conversation.

Review Of Afterparties Stories By Anthony Veasna So, Allan Zheng May 2023

Review Of Afterparties Stories By Anthony Veasna So, Allan Zheng

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

You’re Khmer, right?” Tevy, one of So’s characters from “Three Women of Chuck’s Donuts,” asks a customer (So, 2021, p. 21). Khmer is commonly seen as an ethnic identity and distinct from the broader national identity of Cambodian. Therefore, what does it mean to be Khmer, or generally as I will write in this review, Cambodian American? In his short story collection Afterparties (2021), Anthony Veasna So explores this question in Afterparties (2021) through a rich collage of stories featuring sisters in a donut shop, a cynical high school literature teacher, a reluctant son at the temple to tver bon, …

Notes To My Dad, Karen Vang May 2023

Notes To My Dad, Karen Vang

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

This is a critical reflection of my experience navigating higher education as a Hmong woman. My dad is well known among our clan to be very “traditional” and respectable. However, over the past 6 years during my graduate studies, my dad has remained my number one supporter. I sometimes, I tell him he is the chosen one, to derail his beliefs. At times, I begin to imagine what life would be like if I were a son. As for me, one of my mentors told me one time, that it is my sacred path to do this work. I have …

Morphology Engineering Of Hybrid Supercapacitor Electrodes From Hierarchical Stem-Like Carbon Networks With Flower-Like Mos2 Structures, Jaehoon Ji, Sewon Park, Jong Hyun Choi

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

There is a critical need to develop high-performance supercapacitors that can complement and even rival batteries for energy storage. This work introduces a strategy to drastically enhance the energy storage performance of a supercapacitor by engineering electrode morphologies with ternary composites offering distinct benefits for the energy storage application. The electrodes were fabricated with conductive networks of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) coated with a zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF) for high ion diffusivity and ion-accumulating molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with various morphologies. These include flower-like (fMoS2), stacked-plate (pMoS2), and exfoliated-flake (eMoS2) structures from topochemical synthesis. CNT-ZIF-fMoS2 demonstrates an excellent energy density, reaching almost …

An Ethical Framework For Library Publishing Version 2.0, Tina Baich, Nina Collins, Jaime Ding, Abigail Gulya, Zoe Wake Hyde, Bernadette A. Lear, Joshua Neds-Fox, Charlotte Roh, Melanie Schlosser, Kate Shuttleworth, Christine Turner

LPC Publications

Conceived at the Library Publishing Forum in 2017, the Ethical Framework for Library Publishing was a first-of-its-kind document for the LPC and the library publishing community. But remarkable social upheaval in the ensuing years, along with the continued maturation of our discipline, prompted the LPC to convene a task force to update the Framework for our current environment. What the task force developed, to our surprise, looks very little like the original document. An Ethical Framework for Library Publishing Version 2.0 is a true framework to help library publishers set an ethical baseline for their programs and activities. Consisting of …

High Efficiency Heat Pump Industrial Drying With Water Vapor-Selective Membranes, Andrew Fix, James E. Braun, David M. Warsinger

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Convective drying processes consume a significant amount of energy within the industrial sector. Heat pump-based drying processes are gaining attention as a potential technology for enabling efficient, electricity-driven drying for various applications. In this work, we propose a new heat pump drying system concept that employs water vapor-selective membranes for active control of the air humidity in drying processes, termed the MemDry system. We developed system-level models for the MemDry and representative baseline systems based on the first and second laws of thermodynamics to explore energy trends and limitations of the concept. It was found that energy savings on the …

Global-To-Local-To-Global Interactions And Climate Change, Uris Baldos, Maksym Chepeliev, Brian Cultice, Matthew Huber, Sisi Meng, Alex C. Ruane, Shellye Suttles, Dominique Van Der Mensbrugghe

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

Climate change by its very nature epitomizes the necessity and usefulness of the global-to-local-to-global (GLG) paradigm. It is a global problem with the potential to affect local communities and ecosystems. Accumulation of local impacts and responses to climate change feeds back to regional and global systems creating feedback loops. Understanding these complex impacts and interactions is key to developing more resilient adaptation measures and designing more efficient mitigation policies. To this date, however, GLG interactions have not yet been an integrative part of the decision-support toolkit. The typical approach either traces the impacts of global action on the local level …

The War In Ukraine, Food Security And The Role For Europe, Maksym Chepeliev, Maryla Maliszewska, Maria Filipa Seara E Pereira Apr 2023

The War In Ukraine, Food Security And The Role For Europe, Maksym Chepeliev, Maryla Maliszewska, Maria Filipa Seara E Pereira

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

Food-security implications of the war in Ukraine are exacerbated by adverse weather events, spillover effects from the distortion of energy and fertiliser markets, and domestic policies that countries around the world have implemented in pursuit of food security. Estimates suggest that the cumulative effect of these channels in terms of restricting agricultural and food trade is in the order of over 10 times larger, and their cumulative effect on global food supply is on average three times more substantial than the direct agricultural supply disruptions in Ukraine. The latter, however, disproportionally impacts low-income countries that are particularly vulnerable to food …

Bhute, Sandra Torregrosa-Allen, Bennett D. Elzey, You-Yeon Won, Qing Deng, Xiaojun Lance Lian, Xiaoguang Wang, Omolola Eniola-Adefeso, Xiaoping Bao

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most aggressive and lethal solid tumors in human. While efficacious therapeutics, such as emerging chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cells and chemotherapeutics, have been developed to treat various cancers, their effectiveness in GBM treatment has been hindered largely by the blood-brain barrier and blood-brain-tumor barriers. Human neutrophils effectively cross physiological barriers and display effector immunity against pathogens but the short lifespan and resistance to genome editing of primary neutrophils have limited their broad application in immunotherapy. Here we genetically engineer human pluripotent stem cells with CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene knock-in to express various anti-GBM CAR constructs with …

Method For Estimating Pulsatile Wall Shear Stress From One-Dimensional Velocity Waveforms, Joseph C. Muskat, Charles F. Babbs, Craig J. Goergen, Vitaliy L. Rayz

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Wall shear stress (WSS)—a key regulator of endothelial function—is commonly estimated in vivo using simplified mathematical models based on Poiseuille's flow, assuming a quasi-steady parabolic velocity distribution, despite evidence that more rapidly time-varying, pulsatile blood flow during each cardiac cycle modulates flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in large arteries of healthy subjects. More exact and accurate models based on the well-established Womersley solution for rapidly changing blood flow have not been adopted clinically, potentially because the Womersley solution relies on the local pressure gradient, which is difficult to measure non-invasively. We have developed an open-source method for automatic reconstruction of unsteady, Womersley-derived …

Cartografías Cosmopolitas: León De Greiff Y La Tradición Literaria, Marco Ramírez Rojas Apr 2023

Cartografías Cosmopolitas: León De Greiff Y La Tradición Literaria, Marco Ramírez Rojas

Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures

Cartografías cosmopolitas: León de Greiff y la tradición literaria analyzes the poetic works of this twentieth-century Colombian writer as a manifestation of cosmopolitanism, global cultural cartographies, and a self-fashioned poetic genealogy. Ramírez Rojas approaches de Greiff’s poems as cultural maps that reveal both a desire of connectivity with the world and a need for reorganizing the imaginary library of world literature. From a self-assumed position of eccentricity, de Greiff builds a network of global connections and disputes the binary division of cultural centers and peripheries, revendicating marginality as a productive condition. The study of this alternative cosmopolitanism brings de Greiff’s …

The Intersection Of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy And Engineering Design In Secondary Stem, Mariam Manuel, Jessica Gottlieb, Gina Svarovsky, Rebecca Hite

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

The instructional practices of the engineering design process and culturally responsive pedagogy have each garnered national attention and multiple decades of research. Findings from the respective literature bases call for educators and policymakers to integrate these two pedagogical approaches into K-12 classroom instruction. Scholars have argued that this integration would improve student engagement and academic achievement. There is a significant amount of research that supports the positive student outcomes associated with each approach, yet there remains a dearth of literature that addresses the integration of these two practices into the science and mathematics content areas. The movement around educational reform …
