Dissecting Bayes: Using Influence Measures To Test Normative Use Of Probability Density Information Derived From A Sample, Laurence T. Maloney, Keiji Ota May 2024

Dissecting Bayes: Using Influence Measures To Test Normative Use Of Probability Density Information Derived From A Sample, Laurence T. Maloney, Keiji Ota

MODVIS Workshop

Bayesian decision theory (BDT) is used to model human performance in tasks where the decision maker must compensate for uncertainty in order to gain rewards and avoid losses. BDT prescribes how the decision maker can combine available data, prior knowledge, and value to reach a decision maximizing expected winnings. Do human decision makers actually use BDT in making decisions? Researchers typically compare overall human performance (total winnings or overall percent correct) to the predictions of BDT but we cannot conclude that BDT is an adequate model for human performance based on just overall performance. We break BDT down into elementary …

Explaining The Staircase Gelb Illusion, Simultaneous Contrast, And Perceptual Fading Of Stabilized Images With A Neural Model Driven By Fixational Eye Movements, Michael E. Rudd May 2024

Explaining The Staircase Gelb Illusion, Simultaneous Contrast, And Perceptual Fading Of Stabilized Images With A Neural Model Driven By Fixational Eye Movements, Michael E. Rudd

MODVIS Workshop

A neural model of lightness computation driven by fixational eye movements is described and used to simulate various lightness phenomenon, including the Staircase Gelb illusion and its variants, simultaneous contrast, the Chevreul illusion, and perceptual fading of stabilized images. The model provides a precise account of the lightness matches from several experiments, with an overall error of only 1.5%. In the model, spatial maps of transient ON and OFF cell activations—produced as the eyes traverse the visual scene—are sorted by eye movement direction in visual cortex. At a subsequent processing stage, the activations within these maps are summed across space …

Accounting For The Structure Of Noise In Binocular Rivalry With A Bayesian Sampling Approach, Stella Qian, Jake Spicer, Adam N. Sanborn May 2024

Accounting For The Structure Of Noise In Binocular Rivalry With A Bayesian Sampling Approach, Stella Qian, Jake Spicer, Adam N. Sanborn

MODVIS Workshop

Binocular rivalry occurs when two eyes are presented with incompatible images; observers experience temporal alternations of the two eyes’ images. Such descriptions often mislead readers to assume regular rhythmic rivalry dynamics.

However, rivalry dynamics are noisy: percept durations show high variability. (1) The percept durations follow a gamma distribution. (2) Autocorrelations in the percept durations, although widely known, receive little attention in modelling. (3) Similarly, there is a substantial chance of and individual differences on returning to the same exclusive percept after a mixture percept (van Ee, 2009). These observations are unlikely to be explained by injecting Gaussian noise in …

Information Theory Representation Of Perceptual Processes, Misha Pavel, Yorgos Stratis, Holly B. Jimison, Karen S. Quigley, Deniz Erdogmus May 2024

Information Theory Representation Of Perceptual Processes, Misha Pavel, Yorgos Stratis, Holly B. Jimison, Karen S. Quigley, Deniz Erdogmus

MODVIS Workshop

Human performance in many visual experiments is assessed using probabilities of specific responses to uncertain visual events. Using signal detection theory with specific distributional assumptions, we frequently represent the combination of correct detections with correct negative responses to estimate with measures of discriminability, d', and a response criterion. A shortcoming of this approach involves limitations in generalizing the performance measures across different tasks, especially in experiments with dual or multiple tasks that require comparisons of the performance of simultaneous tasks. Our research aims to develop a framework enabling us to estimate the cognitive resources allocated to different tasks.

We propose …

Algebraic Speed Estimation For Sensorless Induction Motor Control: Insights From An Electric Vehicle Drive Cycle, Jorge Neira-Garcia, Andres Beltran-Pulido, John Cortes-Romero

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Induction motors (IMs) must meet high reliability and safety standards in mission-critical applications, such as electric vehicles (EVs), where sensorless control strategies are fundamental. However, sensorless rotor speed estimation demands improvements to overcome filtering distortions, tuning complexities, and sensitivity to IM model mismatch. Algebraic methods offer inherent filtering capabilities and design flexibility to address these challenges without introducing additional dynamics into the control system. The objective of this paper is to provide an algebraic estimation strategy that yields an accurate rotor speed estimate for sensorless IM control. The strategy includes an algebraic estimator with single-parameter tuning and inherent filtering action. …

The Acoustics Of Absorbers Comprising A Flexible Perforated Membrane Backed By A Stack Of Granular Material, Zhuang Mo, Guochenhao Song, Huawei Yang, Tongyang Shi, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

It has been found that when a layer of activated carbon partially fills the space behind a finite, edge-constrained, tensioned impermeable membrane, the absorption peaks due to the modal response of the membrane can be significantly enhanced in the low frequency range. In the present work, the modeling aspects of the latter work have been extended to allow the membrane to be both tensioned and flexurally-stiff, and further, to be micro-perforated, thus expanding the treatment design space. Secondly, the particle layer behind the membrane is modeled by using a two-dimensional finite difference implementation of the Biot poro-elastic theory which then …

Granular Activated Carbon Sound Absorption Predictions Made Using Measured Material Parameters, Huawei Yang, Tongyang Shi, Guochenhao Song, J Stuart Bolton May 2024

Granular Activated Carbon Sound Absorption Predictions Made Using Measured Material Parameters, Huawei Yang, Tongyang Shi, Guochenhao Song, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is hierarchical porosity material that yields better in low frequency sound absorption performance compared with many traditional porous materials due to the sorption effect created by nanometer-scale pores within the particles. In 2017, a triple porosity model accounting for the sorption effect in the micropores was proposed by Venegas et al. In the proposed model, some of input parameters (i.e., mesopore size and micropore effective diffusion coefficient) were fitted by matching the model to measured the surface impedance of a GAC stack; however, some fitted values are questionable from an inorganic material perspective. In the present …

The Mechanism By Which Thermal Coupling Leads To An Asymptotic Maldistribution Stability Boundary For Flow Boiling In Parallel Microchannels, Md Emadur Rahman, Justin A. Weibel May 2024

The Mechanism By Which Thermal Coupling Leads To An Asymptotic Maldistribution Stability Boundary For Flow Boiling In Parallel Microchannels, Md Emadur Rahman, Justin A. Weibel

CTRC Research Publications

Phase change heat transfer processes are attractive for the efficient thermal management of advanced semiconductor devices, with flow boiling in parallel microchannel heat sinks being one promising solution. However, there are several implementation challenges associated with two-phase flow in parallel microchannels, particularly flow maldistribution, which can adversely affect performance and reliability. Two-phase flow models can be useful in predicting and understanding the instability mechanisms that leads to maldistribution, such that parametric performance trends and safe regions of operation can be identified. Channel-to-channel thermal coupling has been shown to alleviate maldistribution, but it is not yet understood why this effect is …

Centerless? Making Sense Of Disruptions In The Graduate Writing Center, Shannon Mcclellan Brooks May 2024

Centerless? Making Sense Of Disruptions In The Graduate Writing Center, Shannon Mcclellan Brooks

The Writing Center Journal

This critical self-reflection is not a success story; rather, it is an effort of decolonial thinking that reckons with the idea, experience, and practice of centerlessness during pandemic-induced online transitions and operations in a graduate writing center (GWC). By tracing the contours of a series of interlocking disruptions the author and her graduate writing center community experienced during COVID-19, this article brings into sharp focus present colonial legacies inhibiting effective developments, moves, and adaptations to the GWC physical center space and praxis. Through retrospectively following pandemic-induced disruptions to her center, the author critically engages how epistemologies of coloniality and modernity …

Beyond Accommodations: Imagination, Decolonization, And The Cripping Of Writing Center Work, Karen Moroski-Rigney May 2024

Beyond Accommodations: Imagination, Decolonization, And The Cripping Of Writing Center Work, Karen Moroski-Rigney

The Writing Center Journal

This article examines connections among disability, colonization, university policies, and writing center work in North America. By positing that university policies have long mimicked medical and scientific processes for creating—and then discriminating against—perceived categories of disability, this article makes interventions into traditional writing center practices and pedagogies without dismissing the spirit with which these aspects of our field came to be. The article has several central claims:

  • Disability has been constructed by nondisabled entities (including doctors, scientists, and institutions).

  • Disability’s “drift” and myriad forms act as both specter and insidious insurance against progress or inclusive design.

  • Writing center scholarship has …
