Post-occupancy evaluation (POE) is an essential tool to gather data from occupants regarding their dwelling conditions to inform retrofit decisions or improve future performance. With the growing importance of green building (GB) as a potent mechanism to address sustainability challenges within the construction industry, research on POE-in-GB is critical. However, there has been little effort to provide researchers with a systematic and bibliometric analysis of the state-of-the-art of the POE-in-GB field. To address this gap, this study uses bibliometric-systematic analysis to conduct a state-of-the-art review of POE-in-GB. A dataset comprising 183 publications from 1999-2023 was collected from the Scopus and …

Construction is the second least digitalised sector globally, negatively affecting performance and productivity. In NSW, Australia the sector is dominated by micro-SMEs, which exacerbates digital adoption. Thus, there is a critical need for an effective mechanism to initiate this transition. This research aims to (a) evaluate the industry perspective on the prioritisation of construction tasks for digitalisation and (b) analyse grassroots demand for digital technologies. To fulfil the first objective, a questionnaire survey was conducted at a roundtable event with 72 industry participants and academics from various disciplines, resulting in 30 responses and a response rate of 42%. The questionnaire …

Critical Review Of Multidimensional Organizational Performance Measurement Models In Construction, Kyudong Kim, Kasey M. Faust
CIB Conferences
Organizational performance is a critical metric for evaluating business success, yet measuring it in construction organizations poses significant challenges due to the industry's inherent complexities, such as its fragmented, project-based structure. Researchers have developed various performance measurement models to address these challenges, including Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), the Balanced Scorecard (BSC), and the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) framework. Despite the widespread use of these models, their application (in what contexts) and integrative use (how they are used together) remain underexplored in construction studies. This study addresses this gap by examining how KPIs, BSC, and EFQM have been applied …

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) has seen the rapid advancement and integration of digital technologies within construction industry practice and offsite construction (OSC) explicitly presents such adoptions. OSC transforms the traditional ‘hands on’ roles of trade workers to that of digital machinery and robotic operators. This study investigates the implications that emerging technology adoption in OSC has on critical trade workers. A a semi-systematic literature review was conducted, evaluating 64 sources from the Scopus database. Employing a 3-stage screening process, 14 sources were critically evaluated. The findings established that carpenters, joiners, electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, and metal workers are critical …

Despite the significant potential of extended reality (XR) technologies in construction research, achieving a collaborative virtual environment that allows real-time engagements among various geographically remote stakeholders is a challenge. Building upon XR technologies, metaverse technology was introduced recently in construction research as a possible solution to address this issue, as it allows multiple users to engage and communicate in virtual environments. Being introduced recently, the applications of the metaverse in construction research (ConVerse) remain immature, vague, and unexplored. Seasoned researchers interested in the ConVerse research still need a reference guide to better understand the potential of the metaverse and its …

With the increasingly aging workforce in the construction industry, understanding age-related differences in the adoption and use of wearable devices is crucial, particularly as privacy concerns pose significant barriers to implementation. While previous studies have addressed challenges older workers experience in construction, limited research has explored how wearable technologies specifically impact workers across different age groups. This study investigates older and younger construction workers' attitudes, perceptions, and interactions with employer-provided wearable devices. A comprehensive survey examined key factors such as privacy concerns, data ownership issues, mental-related data privacy, and the effects of different feedback methods on safety and performance. The …

The industry-sponsored internship is a learner-centered pedagogy rooted in the experiential learning model. While existing literature extensively highlights the importance of experiential learning and internships, a significant gap remains regarding the effectiveness of sequential multi-internship programs. This study investigates students' overall experiences within a sequential multi-internship program, leveraging survey data that captures their reflections across three internships. The analysis postulated that generally, students demonstrated increased positive experience from their first internship to their third. Additionally, the study examined how the diversity and number of companies—whether students interned with one, two, or three—impacts their overall experience. These findings inform the development …

Knowledge management (KM) has established itself into a discipline for the past decades, progressively being incorporated into international standards such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Standard 9001, in 2015 and well-established guides, such as the PMBOK, in 2017, becoming an International Standard in 2018, ISO 30401, which sets the requirements for Knowledge Management Systems (KMS). Although there is substantial literature on the use and application of KM tools and techniques in the construction industry, proposals for KMS are scarce, and, specifically aligned to the ISO 30401 requirements, inexistent. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to tackle this …

Cement, the binding component of concrete, the most widely used construction material in the world, accounts for 8% of global CO2 emissions. Its significant contribution to global warming has motivated researchers to aim for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, in alignment with the 1.5°C global warming temperature limit stipulated by the Paris Agreement. A successful strategy to reduce CO2 emissions in concrete production is through the use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as a partial replacement for cement. However, it is estimated that by 2030, the demand for the most common SCM, fly ash, will exceed its supply. …

Bridging Conflicting Sustainable Goals: Ai-Empowered Analysis Of Biodiversity Commitments And Impacts In Renewable Energy Projects, Xinyi Xu, Jin Xue
CIB Conferences
The development of renewable energy projects, while essential for mitigating climate change, poses significant challenges to biodiversity conservation due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and species displacement. Aligning these projects with global sustainability goals, such as SDG 15, requires addressing the often-overlooked gap between biodiversity commitments and actual impacts.
To tackle this challenge, a conceptual framework is proposed in this study that illustrates the relationship between biodiversity commitments and impacts through four hierarchical levels. The framework distinguishes between predicted and actual impacts, as well as compliance-driven and proactive commitments. It incorporates alternative data sources, such as compliance documents, ESG reports, and …

Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) represent a significant opportunity to address the stagnation of productivity in the construction sector, offering advantages such as reduced uncertainty in schedules and costs, minimized waste, and improved sustainability. However, in Chile, the adoption of MMC remains low due to limited information and the lack of early integration in project planning, leading to subjective decision-making. The OptimizIA project, developed by CDT, proposes an artificial intelligence (AI) model to predict and recommend the most suitable MMC solutions based on specific project conditions. This tool supports objective early decision-making in housing projects.
