Dose–Response Functions And Methodological Insights For Sensory Tests With Astringent Stimuli, Jonathan C. Kershaw, Cordelia Running
Dose–Response Functions And Methodological Insights For Sensory Tests With Astringent Stimuli, Jonathan C. Kershaw, Cordelia Running
Department of Food Science Faculty Publications
Sensations such as bitterness and astringency can limit the acceptance of many purportedly healthy foods. The purpose of this study was to investigate dose–response relationships of various astringent and bitter stimuli in a beverage, and to simultaneously gain additional methodological insight for the effects of wording, repeated tasting, and beverage matrix on these sensations. Untrained participants were presented with samples of a “flavored beverage” or water containing various concentrations of four stimuli (alum, malic acid, tannic acid, and quinine) and were asked to rate intensities of tastes (bitterness, sourness, and sweetness) and astringency subqualities (roughing, drying, and constricting or puckering) …
Development Of A Compact Absorption Chiller Using Hydrophobic Flat Sheet Membrane, Shunnosuke Inoue, Chaobin Dang, Eiji Hihara
Development Of A Compact Absorption Chiller Using Hydrophobic Flat Sheet Membrane, Shunnosuke Inoue, Chaobin Dang, Eiji Hihara
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Automotive absorption refrigeration system has enormous potential to conserve energy using the exhaust gas from the car engine. The absorption system, however, has not yet been attracted to automobile application owing to its large volume, weight, and weakness for unexpected vibration and the slop while driving. By the vibration, the LiBr solution is scattered not on the cooling tube in the absorber, that is leading to mal-function of absorber. Also by sloping road, the free surface of solution in the generator and absorber causes mixing of the refrigerant and LiBr solution. To solve the problems, we used hydrophobic flat sheet …

Understanding How First-Generation College Students’ Out-Of-School Experiences, Physics And Stem Identities Relate To Engineering Possible Selves And Certainty Of Career Path, Dina Verdín, Allison Godwin, Gerhard Sonnert, Phillip M. Sadler
School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series
This full, research category study examines how out-of-school experiences in Grades 9-12 predict first-generation college students’ engineering possible selves and certainty of career path. The data for this study came from a large-scale survey on outreach programs which was distributed in first- semester English courses to capture an array of responses from students interested in STEM and non-STEM careers. We used structural equation modeling to examine a set of hypotheses: 1) out-of-school experiences would be mediated by interest and recognition in physics and STEM and no direct effect will be found for out-of-school experiences on physics and STEM identities, 2) …

Dynamically Calibrated Simulation Of A Refrigeration Cycle For Household Freezers, Andreas Egger, Bernhard Zuber, Mario Rohrhofer, Johann Hopfgartner, Raimund Almbauer, Erhard Perz
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
The development process of energy-efficient household refrigerators and freezers is characterized by time-consuming and expensive experiments. In order to make this development process more efficient, dynamic (transient) models of the individual components of the entire refrigeration cycle were developed at Graz University of Technology. To ensure operability beyond the research project and to enable industrial application, these models have been implemented in the commercial software IPSEpro. The advantage of using such a simulation tool is the simplicity of conducting parameter studies as well as performing design modification to the device. This work includes modelling approaches of each refrigeration cycle component …

A Meta-Analysis Of Gifted And Talented Identification Practices, Jaret Hodges, Juliana Tay, Yukiko Maeda, Marcia Gentry
Department of Education Studies Graduate Student Publications
Researchers consider the underrepresentation of Black, Hispanic, and Native American students is largely due to the use of traditional methods of identification (i.e., IQ and standardized achievement tests). To address this concern, researchers created novel nontraditional identification methods (e.g., nonverbal tests, student portfolios, affective checklists). This meta-analysis of 54 studies, consisting of 85 effect sizes representing 191,287,563 students, provides evidence that nontraditional identification methods, while able to narrow the proportional identification gap between underrepresented (Black, Hispanic, and Native American) and represented (Asian and White American) populations, are still unable to address the issue of education inequity. An overall risk ratio …

Experimental Investigations Of Air-Cooler Operating Under Frost Conditions, Jerzy Gagan, Kamil Smierciew, Dariusz Butrymowicz, Paweł Jakończuk
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
The fin-and-tube heat exchanger has been extensively used in many fields, especialy in HVACR (heat, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems). When such heat exchangers is operating as an air-cooler, in most of the cases, it usually deals with lower temperature. When moist air flows across cold surfaces of heat exchanger whose temperatures are lower than the freezing point the frost formation will occur. This frost accumulation is undesirable in most cases since it negatively affects heat transfer due to the insulation of frost layer and causes pressure loss by the blockage of air flow as the frost grows. This will …
Extremum-Seeking Control Optimizes Vrf Energy Consumption, Liming Yang, Yunrui Wang, Robert D. Turney
Extremum-Seeking Control Optimizes Vrf Energy Consumption, Liming Yang, Yunrui Wang, Robert D. Turney
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
To a VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) system, outdoor unit (ODU) energy consumption is the combination of the power consumption of compressors and outdoor fans. The combined power consumption changes with discharge pressures and other conditions. Discharge pressures are controlled to its’ setpoint by manipulating fan speed. There are optimal discharge pressure points, where the combined power consumptions are at its’ minimum. Most common control approaches in industry on the discharge pressure is setting them to a constant value or calculating as a function of compressor speed and ambient temperature. Fixing it to a constant value is not a desired solution …

Experimental Study Of A Low-Temperature Compressor-Ejector Refrigeration System, Olexiy Buyadgie, Pavlo Nesterov, Oleksii Drakhnia, Dmytro Buyadgie
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
The decrease of electricity consumption by refrigerators at least by 10% reduces the load on the power plant by 1.5%, which is a very significant magnitude in the scale of the planetary balance. The calculated-theoretical research of new schemes of combined refrigerating machines with booster and compressive ejector stage showed the reduction of energy consumption, depending on the operating mode, from 10 to 40%. The ejector stage is produced for new systems and for operating compression refrigerating machines, while the price of the additional equipment does not exceed 10% of the cost of the compressor. For the experiment, the basic …

Free Subcooling With The Sky: Improving The Efficiency Of Air Conditioning Systems, Eli A. Goldstein, Dennis Nasuta, Song Li, Cara Martin, Aaswath Raman
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Radiative sky cooling is a passive process that can be harnessed to subcool refrigerants in air conditioning and refrigeration systems, thereby increasing the cooling capacity of the refrigerant, and improving the underlying efficiency of the base cooling system. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the use of a radiative sky cooling-enabled passive fluid cooling panel to improve the efficiency of an air conditioning system by subcooling. The panel’s passive cooling capability is enabled by a multilayer optical film that enables the sky cooling effect 24-hours a day. The film is simultaneously a good reflector of solar energy and a …

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating Improvement Of Residential Hvac Systems Using A Low Power Inverter With A Psc Compressor, Ludovic Chretien, Roger Becerra, Nicholas Salts, Eckhard A. Groll
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Homeowners in the United States can generally choose among three types of air conditioning systems: fixed-speed compressor systems that cycle on and off to deliver an average cooling capacity; fixed-speed / multi-capacity compressor systems with reduced cycling; and variable speed compressor systems that match the cooling load of the household, thereby delivering better temperature and humidity control with higher efficiency and comfort levels. While HVAC systems account for about 45% of the energy consumption in U.S. homes and variable speed compressor systems can achieve significantly higher efficiency, they only account for 10% of the market and systems installed in new …

Comparison Of Dehumidification Performance Of Counter And Cross-Flow Type Liquid Desiccant Dehumidifiers, Hye-Jin Cho, Jae-Weon Jeong
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
In HVAC systems, a liquid desiccant system has attracted research attentions due to its advantages on removing latent loads in a conditioned building with less energy consumption. The dehumidifier is the key component in a liquid desiccant system, whose heat and mass transfer performance directly affects the whole dehumidification performance. The coupled heat and mass transfer performance is affected not only by the properties of packing material and inlet conditions of air and desiccant solution, but also by the flow direction between air and desiccant solution. This paper experimentally investigates the dehumidification performance of the counter-flow type and cross-flow type …

Effects Of Economizer Type And Size To The Gas Injected System Using Zeotropic R32/R1234ze(E) Mixture, Zuo Cheng, Baolong Wang, Wenxing Shi, Xianting Li
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Refrigerant mixtures are commonly regarded as a potential substitute because rare pure refrigerants can totally meet all the requirements of environmental, thermodynamic and safe properties. Meanwhile as an effective means, vapour injection is widely applied to improve the system performance of heat pump under large pressure ratio. However, the difference of using pure refrigerant and refrigerant mixtures, which configuration of vapour injection is more suitable for refrigerant mixtures are still unclear. In this paper, R32/R1234ze(E) mixtures are chosen as refrigerant pairs for its great potential in the future, and the scroll compressor is chosen as well to carry out the …

Development And Preliminary Validation Of A Five Factor Model Measure Of Machiavellianism, Katherine L. Collison, Colin E. Vize, Joshua D. Miller, Donald R. Lynam
Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications
Machiavellianism is characterized by planfulness, the ability to delay gratification, and interpersonal antagonism (i.e., manipulativeness and callousness). Although its theoretically positive relations with facets of Conscientiousness should help distinguish Machiavellianism from psychopathy, current measurements of Machiavellianism are indistinguishable from those of psychopathy in large part because of their assessment of low Conscientiousness. The goal of the present study was to create a measure of Machiavellianism that is more in line with theory using an expert-derived profile based on the 30 facets of the five-factor model (FFM) and then test the validity of that measure by comparing it with relevant constructs. …
Simulation Of Seasonal Performance Of A Membrane Heat Pump System In Different Climate Regions, Ahmad A. Bukshaisha, Brian M. Fronk
Simulation Of Seasonal Performance Of A Membrane Heat Pump System In Different Climate Regions, Ahmad A. Bukshaisha, Brian M. Fronk
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Membrane based heat pumps systems have attracted the attention of many research groups as a potentially more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional vapor compression systems that are being used for space cooling in 90% of the buildings in the United States. A membrane heat pump essentially combines an indirect evaporative cooler with a vacuum dehumidification process to provide sensible and latent cooling to a conditioned space. Membrane heat pumps potentially consume significantly less energy during the dehumidification process and do not use any refrigerant other than water, thereby eliminating the need of refrigerant compressor and the need for high global …

Comparison Study Of Bio-Growth In Commercial Ahu’S Using Copper Heat Exchangers And Components, John C. Hipchen, Annina Hogan, Dale Powell
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
The growth of molds and other bio-organisms on heat exchangers in commercial air handling units (AHU’s) can reduce air flow thereby affecting the efficiency of the HVAC system and potentially affecting air quality, as well. This growth is especially prevalent on the moist surfaces of cooling coils. The use of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) to control bio-growth in commercial AHU’s has become a common practice with documented positive results. Although the use of UVGI is effective on those surfaces that receive sufficient doses of radiation, concerns about surfaces outside of the radiation field plus concerns about energy costs and maintenance …
A Review Of Electronic Expansion Valve Correlations For Air-Conditioning And Heat Pump Systems, Hanlong Wan, Yunho Hwang, Saikee Oh
A Review Of Electronic Expansion Valve Correlations For Air-Conditioning And Heat Pump Systems, Hanlong Wan, Yunho Hwang, Saikee Oh
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Split-type air-conditioning systems with multiple indoor units and variable capacity feature, also known as variable refrigerant flow systems (VRF), are growing in both residential and commercial buildings for its flexibility in configurations and high energy efficiency through zoning control and variable capacity control. The VRF system controls its capacity by the combination of drive frequency of variable speed compressor and opening of electronic expansion valves (EEV). According to fluid dynamics analysis, the mass flow rate is a function of the EEV opening. Therefore, the accurate correlation of mass flow rate through an EEV is important in accurate prediction of the …

Frost Nucleation And Frost Growth On Hydrophobic And Hydrophilic Surfaces For Heat Exchangers Fin Structures, Lorenzo Cremaschi, Ellyn Harges, Burak Adanur, Amy Strong
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Frost formation decreases the energy efficiency of refrigeration and heat pump systems in building HVAC applications. Several studies exist in the open literature that examined frost formation on fin structures under forced convection conditions. Most of the experimental studies have a narrow range of test conditions and do not provide all the primary time-dependent variables during frost nucleation and subsequent frost growth period. This paper presents new experimental data of frost nucleation and frost growth on a cold flat fin plate operating in frosting conditions and with forced convective flow. The top and the leading edge of the test surfaces …

Influence Of The Fluid Distribution Width On The Wettability Of Rivulet Flow Over Vertical Flat Surfaces, Piyatida Trinuruk, Niccolo Giannetti, Kaneko Takuya, Seiichi Yamaguchi, Kiyoshi Saito
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
The performance of heat transfer in the processes of evaporation, absorption, distillation and even condensation is affected from the wetting behavior of the liquid film flow on the surface. The complete wetting of the surface is usually required while breaking of thin liquid film is to be avoided. Various experimental settings have been designed by several researchers to investigate the main parameters influencing the stability of the film. However, in order to generalize and properly scale the results, the appropriate dimension of the test section and its influences on the wetting behavior are still unresolved questions that need to be …

An Integrated Solution Enabling Low Superheat Operation For Improved Performance In Reversible Chiller Systems, Abhinav Krishna, Eric Winandy, Stephane Bertagnolio
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
The adoption and proliferation of variable speed compressors and electronic expansion valves (EXVs) in high-efficiency reversible chiller systems provides the opportunity to optimize the performance of the unit around a new set of variables. This paper details the benefits of a controls framework designed to enable low-superheat (below 5K) operation to optimize the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) of a commercial-scale chiller in a safe manner. The various attributes of low-superheat operation over conventional (>5K) chiller operation, including the reliability impact on the controller and compressor, is discussed. The performance benefit for a range of capacities and compressor configurations, …

Application Of Optimization Of Compressors Used In Air Conditioning Units, Joel Vinod Aralikatti, David Zietlow
Application Of Optimization Of Compressors Used In Air Conditioning Units, Joel Vinod Aralikatti, David Zietlow
International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Conference
Total life-cycle cost of a system are the costs incurred by the owner over the entire life of the system. The two main components of this are: 1) initial cost: cost to purchase the system, often defined by the total/maximum capacity and quality of the system, and 2) operating cost: the cost of operation over the entire life of the system, defined by the daily usage and the efficiencies of the system and its components. Most compressors are designed by trying to minimize the initial cost. Minimal data are available on the selection of a compressor based on its design …
