Computer Information Technology Faculty Publications
Advanced manufacturing strategies have enabled large‐scale, economical, and efficient production of electronic components that are an integral part of various consumer products ranging from simple toys to intricate computing systems; however, the circuitry for these components is (by and large) produced via top‐down lithography and is thus limited to planar surfaces. The present work demonstrates the use of reconfigurable soft microreactors for the patterned deposition of conductive copper traces on flat and embossed two‐dimensional (2D) substrates as well as nonplanar substrates made from different commodity plastics. Using localized, flow‐assisted, low‐temperature, electroless copper deposition, conductive metallic traces are fabricated, which, when …

Improving The Reliability Of A Domestic Refrigerator Compressor Subjected To Repetitive Loading, Seongwoo Woo, Dennis O'Neal
Improving The Reliability Of A Domestic Refrigerator Compressor Subjected To Repetitive Loading, Seongwoo Woo, Dennis O'Neal
International Compressor Engineering Conference
As a reliability quantitative specification, parametric accelerated life testing was used to assess the reliability of a newly designed compressor of a commercial refrigerator subjected to repetitive stresses. A generalized life-stress failure model and new sample size equation with a new load concept were derived starting with the basic refrigeration cycle. The sample size equation with the acceleration factor also enabled the parametric accelerated life testing to quickly evaluate the expected lifetime. The design of this testing should help an engineer uncover the design parameters affecting reliability during the design process of the compressor system. Consequently, it should help companies …

Numerical Study On The Internal Characteristics Of Single Screw Expanders Used In Organic Rankine Cycle Systems, Lili Shen, Wei Wang, Yu-Ting Wu, Biao Lei, Ruiping Zhi, Chongfang Ma
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Single screw expanders have been widely studied in middle-low temperature heat recovery power system of organic Rankine cycle, which is significant for the energy-conservation and environment-protection. However, internal irreversible loss including leakage, heat transfer and friction power loss has great influence on the performances of single screw expanders. Although some present researches of single screw expanders have been carried out, few can directly reflect the effect of internal irreversible loss on the performance of expanders. Therefore, it is necessary to research the internal characteristics of the single screw expanders. In this paper, a numerical study of a single screw expander …
Dynamics Study Of The Hermetic Compressor, Simone Penazzo
Dynamics Study Of The Hermetic Compressor, Simone Penazzo
International Compressor Engineering Conference
In this Paper a detailed study of dynamics of the hermetic compressor is shown. The key point of this study is the well-known issue of compressor reciprocating kinematic unbalancing which is the main cause of modern refrigerator structural vibrations and consequently acoustical performance. In this frame-work the main target of this work is the reduction and redistribution of compressor accelerations along “privileged” axes to reduce the aforementioned phenomena. Starting from the general treatment of Professor Sōdel, specific studies on reciprocating kinematic balancing, discharge pipe, suspension springs and crankcase dynamics are performed. In particular, a detailed model is developed to calculate …

Numerical Analysis Of Friction Power And Wear Of Vane In Rotary Compressor, Zhong Yang, Hong Guo, Bo Jiang, Binsheng Zhu
International Compressor Engineering Conference
In this article, a numerical method was established to analyze the friction power and wear of vane in the rotary compressor. In this method, the time domain was divided into many steps, the physical process was simplified as an explicit model. At each delta time step, three sub models were calculated iteratively, the geometric model, the contact model and the friction model. Firstly, in the geometric model, geometric kinematics of vane and piston were obtained by calculating multi body dynamical equation. Secondly, in the contact model, Reynolds equation and elastic contact equation were solved as a coupled problem to get …

Numerical Simulation Of Pump Oil For Rotary Compressor Under Different Crankshaft Structures, Wang Yanzhen, Chunhui Liu
International Compressor Engineering Conference
The oil lubrication system of the crankshaft pump is an essential part of the rotary compressor. In the crankshaft pump oil lubrication system, the crankshaft has two kinds of inner hole structure: straight through hole and horizontal hole. The direct through hole and the transverse hole are different not only in the processing mode and cost, but also on the oil quantity of the pump. In this paper, based on the CFD software the fluid field of whole compressor exhaust chamber under different speed is simulated, and the pressure pulsation curves of crankshaft through hole end and horizontal hole end …

Noise Optimization For Rotary Compressor Base On Balance Of Crank-Shaft System Analysis, Xiaoqiang Huang, Hui Shen, Ke Wang, Xuechao Ding, Lijuan Tian
International Compressor Engineering Conference
The sound quality and noise level of the compressor are obviously affected by balance of the crank-shaft system. An intermittent abnormal noise problem on a customer air-conditioner was detected through the crank-shaft displacement test, it is caused by the radial and longitudinal unbalance of the crank-shaft system of the rotary compressor. The test shows that the abnormal noise develops with the radial and longitudinal run-out of the crank-shaft of the compressor, the forces of the crank-shaft system are studied by the mechanical model and the optimization design schemes are obtained to solve the noise problem.

Three-Dimensional Cfd Simulation Of A Roots Blower For The Hydrogen Circulating Pump, Yian Zhang, Ying Zhao, Xueyuan Peng
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Fuel cell vehicle (FCV) is more advantageous compared to a gasoline-powered internal combustion engine based vehicle and is a new and popular way to solve the environmental problem. Hydrogen circulating pump is an essential assembly unit for the fuel cell, which is used in FCV. Roots blower is employed in this field. Hydrogen has a low molecular weight, which means it is easy to leak through the clearances and hard to preserve. It increases the difficulty of design and operation. In this paper, the performance parameters of a three-lobe roots blower were studied. A multi-scale model was used since the …

Application Of Dynamic Centrifugal Compressor Model For Mechanical Vapor Recompression System Simulation, Le Wang, Guangbin Liu, Chuandong Xie, Jun Xiao, Chenyan Zhang
International Compressor Engineering Conference
In order to reducing energy costs and CO2 foot-print, mechanical vapor recompression system (MVR) is used for thermal separation processes such as evaporation and distillation are energy intensive instead of multiple-effect evaporation system. For medium and high capacities, centrifugal compressor (fan) is the most commonly used type for gas compression with a limited operational range and control of the compressors is crucial for safe and efficient operation. The model based on first principles is developed for dynamic performance, which is determined from the compressor geometry and not from the experimentally determined characteristic performance curves. Impeller losses are studied: incidence, skin …
Evaluation Of Lubricant Properties And Refrigerant Interaction, Joseph Karnaz, Christopher Seeton
Evaluation Of Lubricant Properties And Refrigerant Interaction, Joseph Karnaz, Christopher Seeton
International Compressor Engineering Conference
Lubricant selection for compressors used in the HVAC&R industry is typically tied to the refrigerant and subsequent properties understood to be desirable for effective system operation. Over the years refrigerants have changed, and with each change there has been a need for the reevaluation of the interaction with lubricants. In some cases, the existing lubricants can be utilized, however, in others, a there has been the need for new lubricants to be developed. Unfortunately, engineers have typically not challenged what constitutes good and have proceeded with outdated values for “good” or “desirable” properties of the lubricant-refrigerant mixture. Or, in some …

An Integrated Assessment Of The Potential Impacts Of Climate Change On Indiana Forests, Richard Phillips, Leslie Brandt, P. David Polly, Patrick A. Zollner, Michael Saunders, Keith Clay, Louis Iverson, Songlin Fei
Forest Publications
Forests provide myriad ecosystem services, many of which are vital to local and regional economies. Consequently, there is a need to better understand how predicted changes in climate will impact forests dynamics and the implications of such changes for society as a whole. Here we focus on the impacts of climate change on Indiana forests, which are representative of many secondary growth broadleaved forests in the greater Midwest region in terms of their land use history and current composition. We find that predicted changes in climate for the state – warmer and wetter winters/springs and hotter and potentially drier summers …
Are The Adverse Human Effects Of Air Pollution Underestimated In The Literature? Implications For Science, Medicine And Public Policy, Stephen Jay
Health Supplemental Files
Researchers have not addressed the question “Are the adverse human effects of air pollution underestimated in the literature?” and to date we lack an answer to it. This scan is a non-scientific review of diseases causally linked to air pollution and reported infrequently in the peer reviewed literature. I think a prospective study of the true estimate of mortality and morbidity and harm of air pollution would confirm current statistics upon which policy decisions are based are underestimated.

Impacts Of Climate Change On The State Of Indiana: Ensemble Future Projections Based On Statistical Downscaling, Alan Hamlet, Kyuhyun Byun, Scott Robeson, Melissa Widhalm, Mike Baldwin
Climate Change Publications
Using an ensemble of 10 statistically downscaled global climate model (GCM) simulations, we project future climate change impacts on the state of Indiana (IN) for two scenarios of greenhouse-gas concentrations (a medium scenario--RCP4.5, and a high scenario--RCP 8.5) for three future time periods (2020s, 2050s, 2080s). Relative to a 1971-2000 baseline, the scenarios project substantial changes in temperature for IN, with a change in the annual ensemble mean temperature for the 2080s RCP8.5 scenario of about 5.6 °C (10.1 °F). Such changes also indicate major changes in extreme temperatures. For southern IN, the number of days with daily maximum temperatures …
