Performance Modeling Of A Novel “Smart” Magnetic Particle-Embedded Pcm Layer For Thermal Management Systems, Mingkan Zhang, Kashif Nawaz

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Developing stable and environmentally friendly phase change materials (PCM) has been an active area of research due to many applications, such as industrial energy storage system, cooling/heating applications in buildings, and thermal management for electronics equipment as well as for batteries and photovoltaic modules. However, previous studies confirmed that most PCMs suffer a serious disadvantage of low thermal conductivity. A novel design of PCM layer is investigated here for thermal management application. The novel PCM layer is comprised of a PCM and magnetic particles coated on the shell. When a magnetic field is applied in the thermal management system, due …

Preliminary Assessment Of A Weather Forecast Tool For Building Operation, José Agustín Candanedo, Jean-Marc Hardy, Étienne Saloux, Radu Platon, Vahid Raissi-Dehkordi, Alexandre Côté

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Although the potential of model predictive control (MPC) for the operation of buildings is widely recognized, as of today its adoption has been rather limited. This is partly due to the lack of user-friendly software tools for MPC, such as tools to facilitate the incorporation of forecast information in building automation systems. In view of this, CanmetENERGY, a research centre of Natural Resources Canada, has developed CanMETEO, a software tool free of charge aimed at obtaining weather forecast data and make it available in a useful and practical format for building operators. CanMETEO, which was released officially in August 2017, …

An Innovative Hybrid Photovoltaic Thermal Heat Pump System For Houses, Amirahmad Zare, Weimin Wang Jul 2018

An Innovative Hybrid Photovoltaic Thermal Heat Pump System For Houses, Amirahmad Zare, Weimin Wang

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Using photovoltaic modules (PVs) and solar collectors separately for the generation of electricity and heating is a convention in the field. In contrast, PV/T collector is a single device that combines PV and solar collector together that can convert solar radiation to electricity and heat simultaneously. Because the heat transfer medium (e.g., air or water) used to collect thermal energy reduces the operating solar cell temperature, PV/T normally leads to a higher efficiency compared to PV or solar collector alone. Traditionally, PV/T applications have focused on the use of thermal energy for heating. However, PV/T collectors can be used for …

Identifying Peer Groups In A Multifamily Residential Building For Eco-Feedback Design, Sang Woo Ham, Panagiota Karava

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Most residential energy saving strategies require occupants’ participation because they control building and mechanical systems and pay their utility in general. One effective way to increase their participation is to motivate them to change their behaviors by providing relevant information and benefits in their interests. This paper presents baseline energy consumption characteristics in a multifamily housing for eco-feedback design. Although previous studies have proven the energy savings of eco-feedback and smart technology, the results were often mixed or weak because the building, mechanical, geographical, and demographical characteristics were different among houses to make a solid comparison, and the collection of …

Review Of Inorganic Salt Hydrates With Phase Change Temperature In Range Of 5 To 60°C And Material Cost Comparison With Common Waxes, Jason Hirschey, Kyle R Gluesenkamp, Anne Mallow, Samuel Graham

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Phase change materials (PCMs) with desirable phase change temperatures can be used to provide a constant temperature source or sink for diverse applications. As such, incorporating PCMs into building materials, equipment, or appliances can shift and/or reduce the energy load. The motivation of this work is to identify low-cost inorganic salt hydrate PCMs that can complement current building systems and designs. Two key challenges to incorporating PCMs into building materials are 1) maintaining desirable thermal properties at large scales, and 2) developing cost-effective systems that are easily incorporated into existing structures and systems. In this work, we present an analysis …

This work presents an approach for optimizing the operation of the CCHP system using a detailed network energy flow model solved by genetic algorithm. The optimal energy dispatch algorithm provides operational signals associated with resource allocation ensuring that the systems meet …

An Overall Assessment Of Ice Storage Systems For Residential Buildings, Aaron Tam, James E Braun, Neera Jain, Davide Ziviani Jul 2018

An Overall Assessment Of Ice Storage Systems For Residential Buildings, Aaron Tam, James E Braun, Neera Jain, Davide Ziviani

International High Performance Buildings Conference

The recent availability of variable electric energy and demand rates for residential buildings is providing incentives for the application of thermal storage for cooling that previously has been limited to commercial buildings. This is particularly relevant for hot climates where air-conditioning (A/C) use is the primary cause for peak electricity demand. Thermal storage allows consumers to store “cooling” when demand is low and minimize operation of the A/C during peak periods. From an economic perspective, the use of storage can significantly reduce operating costs depending on the utility rate incentives. In addition, storage can lead to a reduction in the …

Experimental Measurements Of Clothes Dryer Drum Heat And Mass Transfer Effectiveness, Kyle R Gluesenkamp, Philip Boudreaux, Bo Shen, Dakota Goodman, Viral Patel

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Accurate system modeling of a clothes dryer requires a drum component that displays correct trends with respect to changing conditions. In this work, a model of drum heat and mass transfer effectiveness is adopted. Within this framework, experimental measurements of drum effectiveness are investigated with respect to several variables: drum volume, load mass, cloth type, drum volumetric air flow rate, and drum entering air temperature. These data can inform the modeling and simulation of any clothes dryer with horizontal-axis, axial-flow tumble-type clothes dryer drum.

Comparison Of Three Transient Models For Slab Heating/Cooling Systems, Anthony Rey, Rémi Dumoulin, Andreas Athienitis

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Radiant floor heating and cooling systems can be beneficial in various applications such as heating or cooling buildings and in infrastructure applications such as de-icing of bridges and roads as well as snow melting. Such systems usually include a significant amount of thermal mass, thus providing energy flexibility in buildings. Models of embedded-tube radiant systems are therefore useful to predict their behavior (rate of heat transfer and outlet heat-transfer fluid temperature), which can be used for the development of predictive control strategies and optimal control algorithms. As a result, a comparison of different models is conducted in this paper. The …

An Efficient Method For Learning Personalized Thermal Preference Profiles In Office Spaces, Seungjae Lee, Panagiota Karava, Athanasios Tzempelikos, Ilias Bilionis

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Incorporating occupant preferences in sensing and control operations of thermal systems has the potential to maximize thermal satisfaction and to supply energy when and where it is needed. Learning personalized thermal preferences is an essential part in this process. The latest studies have shown that it is possible to learn personalized thermal preference profiles using machine-learning and data-driven modeling algorithms. However, adequate data is required for each occupant, which is challenging in real buildings. This study presents: (i) a data-efficient method for learning personalized thermal preference profiles, based on Bayesian formalism, which shows good performance even with unobserved variables (i.e., …

Critical Opportunity Areas For Building Performance, Domenique Lumpkin, Joseph Sinfield, Travis Horton

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Green buildings are a proposed holistic solution to reduce energy consumption while simultaneously improving an array of factors affecting the indoor quality of life for building occupants. However, green building performance varies and may not achieve intended design goals. Research has concluded that no single factor determines the actual energy performance of buildings. To deliver energy-efficient buildings an integrated design that considers climate, technology, operation and maintenance and occupant behavior should be implemented. This work aimed to employ a holistic lens to relate human-building interaction and building performance characteristics. Specifically, systems theory and complex-problem solving techniques were employed to capture …

Design Of Experiments For Learning Personalized Visual Preferences Of Occupants In Private Offices, Nimish Awalgaonkar Awalgaonkar, Jie Xiong, Ilias Bilionis, Athanasios Tzempelikos, Panagiota Karava

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Occupants working in offices with controllable shading and lighting systems often perform adaptive actions (raising/lowering shades, increasing/decreasing light levels) in an attempt to restore their preferred state of the room. This preference for different room conditions (states) has been shown to vary from person to person and may be affected by exterior conditions. This paper presents an online data-driven methodology which actively queries a new occupant for learning their personalized visual preferences. Preference is governed by a latent preference relation equivalent to a scalar utility function (the higher the utility, the higher the preference for that state). Information about user …

A Data-Driven Approach Towards Integration Of Microclimate Conditions For Predicting Building Energy Performance, Soumik Sarkar, Linjiang Wu, Venkatesh Chinde, Himanshu Sharma, Ulrike Passe

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Energy consumption in buildings is a major part of the overall energy usage in the United States and across the world. Energy performance of buildings is primarily affected by the heat exchange with the building outer skin and the surrounding environment. Building energy simulation (BES) tools are capable of predicting energy usage with variable degree of accuracy using the building geometry, construction information and weather data. In this regard, it is a common practice in BES tools to include boundary conditions of the building shell based on the local weather station. However, to account for accurate building energy consumption, especially …

Development Of A Generalized Control Strategy For Thermal Energy Storage In Residential Buildings, Aaron Tam, James E Braun, Neera Jain, Davide Ziviani

International High Performance Buildings Conference

In recent years, variable electricity pricing has become available to residential consumers to incentivize demand reductions during traditional midday peak hours. This is especially important in hot climates where air-conditioning (A/C) use is the primary cause for peak electricity demand. Thermal storage allows consumers to store “cooling” when demand is low and minimize operation of the A/C during peak periods. This paper considers a packaged A/C integrated with thermal energy storage using ice for residential cooling applications. The focus of the paper is the development and validation of a generalized control strategy that can be used for available residential utility …

A high-level linearized grid distribution network is also developed via IEEE standard grid systems with 9, 14, and 30 buses. The final decentralized utility-scale BtG integrations with battery storages, photovoltaics generations, different grid systems, …

Analysis Of Round-Trip Efficiency Of An Hvac-Based Virtual Battery, Naren Srivaths Raman, Prabir Barooah Jul 2018

Analysis Of Round-Trip Efficiency Of An Hvac-Based Virtual Battery, Naren Srivaths Raman, Prabir Barooah

International High Performance Buildings Conference

The flexibility in power consumption of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems in buildings can be utilized to provide a battery-like service to the power grid. Recent work has reported that using HVAC systems in such a manner may lead to a net increase in energy consumption compared to normal operation, similar to a low round-trip efficiency (RTE) of a battery. In our previous work we showed that the low RTEs reported were due to the way the experiments/simulations were performed, and that using an HVAC system as a virtual battery repeatedly leads to an asymptotic RTE of one. In …

Mpc Performance For Hybrid Geotabs Buildings, Damien Picard, Lieve Helsen Jul 2018

Mpc Performance For Hybrid Geotabs Buildings, Damien Picard, Lieve Helsen

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Hybrid GEOTABS buildings are buildings equipped with a ground source heat pump (GSHP), thermally activated building systems (TABS), a conditioned ventilation and, optionally, additional heating and cooling systems such as variable-air-volume boxes or radiators. GEOTABS can be very energy efficient but their controllability is limited and thermal comfort is therefore not always guaranteed. Hybrid GEOTABS systems have the potential to eliminate these problems, provided the different system components interact properly. In this paper, we investigate the performance of hybrid GEOTABS systems for an office building, a retirement home, a school and a block of flats when controlled by a current …

Improving Steam System Operation And Management, Kyle James Reiter, Daniel Andres Allocca, William J Hutzel

International High Performance Buildings Conference

This paper documents the design and construction of a world-class steam system institute. Steam systems provide heat and energy for high performance buildings. However, incoming technicians have little to no technical education for steam systems and no steam institutes exist today. While new technicians are introduced to steam systems for 20 hours of in class sessions, there are little opportunities for hands on experience. Furthermore, steam systems, if not maintained properly, are dangerous and new personnel need hands on experience to ensure safety and adherence to standard protocol. A new world-class steam system institute will provide incoming technicians with knowledge …

Applying User Experience (Ux) Principles To Net Zero Energy Buildings, Megan M Switzer, William Hutzel, Hazar Dib, Jason Ostanek Jul 2018

Applying User Experience (Ux) Principles To Net Zero Energy Buildings, Megan M Switzer, William Hutzel, Hazar Dib, Jason Ostanek

International High Performance Buildings Conference

As buildings have become more complex, interpreting building performance becomes challenging. A Building Automation System (BAS) has hundreds of data points that monitor performance but the data is frequently under-utilized. Over 20% of a building’s energy is wasted through energy inefficiencies that go undetected. Building controls are not going to get easier, but methods are being developed to simplify monitoring building performance. An Energy Dashboard is a graphic interface for a BAS that simplifies the monitoring and control of a building. An energy dashboard automatically tracks building energy use to help detect overconsumption patterns or malfunctioning equipment. Energy dashboards allow …

Modification And Assessment Of A Residential Summer Program For High School Women, Aimee Cloutier, Guo Zheng Yew, Siddhartha Gupta, Kalpani Dissanayake, Paula Monaco, Susan Mengel, Audra Morse Jul 2018

Modification And Assessment Of A Residential Summer Program For High School Women, Aimee Cloutier, Guo Zheng Yew, Siddhartha Gupta, Kalpani Dissanayake, Paula Monaco, Susan Mengel, Audra Morse

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

The importance of reducing the gender gap in engineering programs by recruiting and retaining female students is well recognized. Although women hold roughly half of all jobs in the United States, only 24% of STEM jobs are occupied by women. The problem is even more pronounced for engineering, where women held about 12% of jobs as of 2013 (Corbett & Hill, 2015). Consequently, interactive, hands-on outreach programs are a common tool used by universities to encourage interest in engineering from K–12 students. Engineering—Get Into Real Learning (E-GIRL) is a week-long, residential summer program offered by Texas Tech University for female …
