Finite Element Study Of Acoustic Mode Force Transmission In A Loaded, Structural-Acoustical Tire Model, Rui Cao, J Stuart Bolton Jul 2018

Finite Element Study Of Acoustic Mode Force Transmission In A Loaded, Structural-Acoustical Tire Model, Rui Cao, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

Concerns about tire radiation noise arise from traffic planning, environmental and pedestrian safety stand-points, while from the vehicle passengers' perspective, noise transmitted to the vehicle interior is more im-portant: the latter concern is addressed in this paper. Tire vibration propagates through the vehicle suspension and causes objectionable interior noise; such noise is usually defined as structure-borne noise. Sound absorbing materials have good absorption properties at higher frequencies and are effective at eliminating airborne tire noise, which usually dominates above 500 Hz. Thus, the reduction of relatively low frequency structure-borne tire noise is a continuing focus of auto manufacturers. Among all …

Dr. Jekyll Or Mr. Hyde? President Donald Trump’S Personality Profile As Perceived From Different Political Viewpoints, W. Keith Campbell, Courtland S. Hyatt, Donald R. Lynam, Joshua D. Miller

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

The present research used an empirical, crowdsourced trait profiling approach to describe the personality of Trump that accounts for political views. Clinton (N=120) and Trump (N=118) voters rated Trump’s personality on the 30 facets of the Five Factor Model. Participants also provided perceived helpfulness and harmfulness ratings of the facets before and after the election. We treated these facet level ratings as trait profiles, which were transformed into estimates of personality disorders (PDs) and complex trait-based constructs based on expert profiles. Results suggest only modest agreement between Clinton and Trump voters on Trump’s personality. Clinton voters perceived much greater antagonism, …

Including Fossil-Fuel Consumption Subsidies In The Gtap Data Base, Maksym Chepeliev, Robert Mcdougall, Dominique Van Der Mensbrugghe

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

Historically fossil-fuel consumption subsidies have been one of the most widely used energy and public policy interventions. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), in 2014 they amounted to $493 billion worldwide, which is equivalent to 0.6% of global GDP. Their contribution is even more significant for most energy exporting countries, in many cases exceeding 5-15% of national GDP. However, despite their large magnitude, fossil-fuel consumption subsidies are not explicitly represented in most global economic databases and models, including the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) Data Base, as they are generally not captured by the input-output framework. In this paper, …

Assigning Responsibility To Ocean Pollution, Sophia Paul, Austin Sheetz Jun 2018

Assigning Responsibility To Ocean Pollution, Sophia Paul, Austin Sheetz

Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs

The Oceans cover 71% of the Earth’s surface and are home to an incredible amount of biodiversity. Marine plants produce 70% of the oxygen in the world’s atmosphere (National Geographic 2015), and oceans provide valuable resources that have driven both human culture and economic progress throughout history. Despite the ocean's evident importance to life on Earth, humanity has not worked with much effort to maintain their health.

Drone Policy Overview, Abby Lemert, Mikaela Meyer, Rider Mills, Jordan D. Paine, Ally Wong

Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs

Modern advances in unmanned aerial systems (UAS), or drones, have meant the proliferation of these aircraft throughout the United States (U.S.) that include uses for military, government, commerce, and recreation. Coinciding with advances in technology, increased access to drones, and decreased operational complexities, regulatory models have not been able to adapt to the evolving aerial environment.

Global Gmo Policy, Jordan D. Paine Jun 2018

Global Gmo Policy, Jordan D. Paine

Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs

The genetically modified organisms (GMOs) global policy landscape shows one of divergence not convergence. The United States stands on one side as strong advocates for GMOs through approval and production, while the European Union, on the other side, applies the precautionary principle to GMOs as they appear to be more cautious with GMO production. Due to this polarization, other countries are able to more easily develop their own unique policies, mostly falling somewhere in between the leniency towards approval of the United States and the rigidity towards approval of the European Union.

Concerns And Mitigating Strategies For Aircraft Noise Pollution On Airport Communities, Tyler B. Spence Jun 2018

Concerns And Mitigating Strategies For Aircraft Noise Pollution On Airport Communities, Tyler B. Spence

Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs

Where there are airports, there are noise complaints from residents in the community. Aircraft produce a unique sound that interrupt an existing environment as they traverse a particular point. Noise disturbances from aircraft appear to distract residents near airports more than other types of vehicles such as cars or trains.

Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs

Today the built environment expends 43% of US energy. In the past ten years the science community has begun to tackle this issue with research on the concept of net zero buildings, or buildings that combine energy efficiency and on-site renewable energy production to use no net energy from off-site sources (Dannenberg, 2007). This policy brief explores some of the issues related to net zero construction, as well as variation in state policy approaches that support a net zero construction approach. Current issues affecting net zero are the lack of definitional clarity, the broad range of policies needed to construct …

Intersectional Education, Claire Lee, Claire Marsh, Mikaela Meyer, Jessica Sullivan Jun 2018

Intersectional Education, Claire Lee, Claire Marsh, Mikaela Meyer, Jessica Sullivan

Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs

Education leads to higher future success, freedom, autonomy over one’s lifestyle, and an overall better quality of life. Unfortunately, women make up seventy percent of the world’s out-of-school youth. Additionally, minority groups are suffering from lack of access to educational resources, including native tongue instruction (Intel 2012). Not only are both groups suffering separately, but the intersection of female and minority groups are not achieving the same educational outcomes as majority or male groups. This brief explores this problem and examines how some governments are trying—or not trying—to address it.
