Simulation Assessment Of A Near-Optimal Control Algorithm For Central Cooling Plants With Chilled Water Storage, Rita Cristina Jaramillo, James E. Braun, W. Travis Horton

International High Performance Buildings Conference

This paper presents the results of the evaluation of a control algorithm for minimizing energy costs in cooling plants with chilled water storage. The control approach requires very little plant information, is computationally simple, and is general in the sense that it is applicable to different types of utility rate structures including real-time pricing (RTP), time-of-use (TOU) and TOU with demand charges. The control algorithm was evaluated using a model of an existing chiller plant of significant complexity built in a simulation testbed for different combinations of storage sizes, load profiles and electricity rates. The performance of the near-optimal algorithm …

A Tool For Generating Reduced-Order Models From Building Energy Simulation Input Files To Enable Optimal Design And Control Analysis, Donghun Kim, Yeonjin Bae, James E. Braun, W. Travis Horton

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Representing multi-zone building envelope systems with linear time invariant state-space forms provides a way of applying various advanced control methodologies for better design and control of buildings. For example, system properties such as time constant and frequency response of building envelopes can be easily investigated with the help of control toolkits such as Matlab/Simulink and a reduced-order model can be developed by applying a model order reduction technique, once a reliable LTI building representation is developed. However, in order to make the LTI representation approach useful for industry, an interfacing tool that automatically extracts building system information from input files …

Economic Sizing Of Batteries For The Smart Home, Xin Jin, Jeff Maguire, Dane Christensen Jul 2018

Economic Sizing Of Batteries For The Smart Home, Xin Jin, Jeff Maguire, Dane Christensen

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Growing rooftop photovoltaics (PV) adoption is beginning to challenge the electric power grid in some locations today. During many hours of the year, power is flowing out of PV-enabled buildings and back into grid. When this happens in many homes, the entire feeder voltage is raised significantly, which can be unsafe for grid assets and home appliances. Battery storage provides a good solution to this problem. By storing energy within the home, less energy flows back onto the grid. Scheduling a battery to charge during times a home would otherwise export energy, and discharge when it would otherwise import energy, …

Thermoelectric Heat Pump Clothes Dryer Using Secondary Loop Heat Exchangers: Experimental Evaluation And System Modeling, Viral Patel, Kyle R Gluesenkamp

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Past work has shown that thermoelectric clothes dryers are capable of much higher efficiency than electric resistance clothes dryers. In an effort to improve performance and reduce material utilization, this work explores a new secondary loop system configuration. In this configuration, heat is transferred between air and the thermoelectric heat pumps via two water loops and two water-to-air fin-tube type heat exchangers. Performance is investigated and analyzed using both experimental and thermodynamic simulation methods.

Computational Analysis Of Cross Ventilation For Spaces With Operable Transom Windows In Hot And Humid Climate, Chao-Yen Chang, Ying-Chieh Chan

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Natural ventilation is an important free cooling strategy for residential building in hot or warm climates by providing fresh air and increasing room air flow without using mechanical cooling/ventilation systems when the exterior condition is suitable. While single-sided natural ventilation has been widely studied, the applications of double-sided natural ventilation (cross ventilation) require more attentions especially in hot climate and might provide some extra potential for achieving net-zero residential buildings. This study aims to analyze double-sided (window-side and door-sided) nature ventilation in an apartment space with one door and one window on opposite sides by using 3D steady Computational Fluid …

Optimization Methods For Predictive Maintenance Scheduling Of Building Heating/Cooling Equipment With Performance Decay, Yaqing Wu, Christos T. Maravelias, Yuqiu Jiang, Jingduo Fan, Michael J. Wenzel, Elbsat N. Mohammad, Robert D. Turney

International High Performance Buildings Conference

While various models and methods have been proposed for operating and controlling building heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, equipment decay (e.g., chiller tube fouling or boiler scaling), which results in lower energy efficiency and higher cost, has received limited attention. Accordingly, in this paper, we present an optimization model (mixed-integer linear programming, MILP) for predictive maintenance of HVAC systems with sufficient thermal energy storage (TES). We simultaneously consider the operation and maintenance schedule because of their close mutual interdependence. In addition, a method to accurately approximate equipment operation is provided for long-term scheduling. The proposed model offers decisions …

Proper Splicing Contributes To Visual Function In The Aging Drosophila Eye, Rachel Stegeman, Hana Hall, Spencer E. Escobedo, Henry C. Chang, Vikki M. Weake

Department of Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Changes in splicing patterns are a characteristic of the aging transcriptome; however, it is unclear whether these age‐related changes in splicing facilitate the progressive functional decline that defines aging. In Drosophila, visual behavior declines with age and correlates with altered gene expression in photoreceptors, including downregulation of genes encoding splicing factors. Here, we characterized the significance of these age‐regulated splicing‐associated genes in both splicing and visual function. To do this, we identified differential splicing events in either the entire eye or photoreceptors of young and old flies. Intriguingly, aging photoreceptors show differential splicing of a large number of visual function …

An Agent-Based Control Implementation For The Optimal Coordination Of Multiple Rooftop Units, Xiaodong Hou, Yingying Xiao, Jaewan Joe, Jie Cai, Panagiota Karava, Jianghai Hu, James Braun

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Model predictive control (MPC) has been a popular advanced supervisory control approach for optimizing the operations of building heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, with the objectives of reducing energy consumption and delivering better comfort. However, centralized MPC designs are often 1) not scalable to the increasing sizes of the building systems, 2) not adaptive to subsystem addition/attrition, i.e., ‘Plug-and-Play’ implementation. Agent-based approaches, such as distributed model predictive control (DMPC), are attractive alternative. In this paper, taking a multiple rooftop units (RTU) coordination problem as a case study, we experimentally investigate the energy saving potential by implementing an agent-based DMPC …

Central Energy Facility Optimization With Integrated Incentive And Price-Based Demand Response Programs, Mohammad N. Elbsat, Michael J. Wenzel, Matthew J. Asmus, Frank Renovich, Robert Misbrener, James P. Kummer

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Increasing efforts have been dedicated recently towards the development of advanced system controls to optimize Central Energy Facility (CEF) operations in order to reduce energy consumption, and, consequently, energy cost. Reduction of electric consumption is beneficial for both customers and the Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) managing the power grid. Therefore, RTOs have setup Incentive-Based Demand Response (IBDR) programs, such as Economic Load Demand Response (ELDR), and Price-Based Demand Response (PBDR), such as Peak Load Contribution (PLC), to incentivize customers to lower their electric consumption or shift their electric loads. These strategies also reduce the need for the RTO to commission …

Leveraging Intelligent Building Infrastructure For Event Response, Timothy Wagner, Russell Taylor, Hayden Reeve

International High Performance Buildings Conference

The number of attacks against occupied commercial buildings has increased dramatically around the world and in the United States. These attacks have included active shooters, kinetic devices, and hazardous (i.e., chemical or biological) agents. Typical commercial buildings have no systems to deal with these threats. Even iconic buildings rely primarily on restricted access to provide security. Video cameras are often present but are used primarily for forensics after an event has occurred. However, advanced systems that enable intelligent and connected buildings can be leveraged along with sensor technology to enable detection, notification and response to attacks. These same systems can …

The increased adoption of intermittent renewable energy, such as wind and solar, onto the electrical grid is increasing the need for greater demand flexibility and the development of more advanced demand management solutions. For example, in March 2017 solar and wind set record highs in California, contributing over 49% of its power supply. Furthermore, Hawaii has committed to meeting 100% of its electrical demand from renewables by 2045. This transformation requires solutions to robustly and cost-effectively manage dynamic changes on the grid while ensuring quality of service. Advanced demand response approaches are a key way of enabling this required grid …

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Globally, building sector consumes a large amount of energy both for construction and operation. Especially, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning contribute for 40 – 50% of total building energy consumption. Thermally Activated Building System (TABS), which is an energy efficient alternative for conventional mechanical air conditioning, can reduce the energy consumption of building operation. TABS is based on radiant cooling, which also utilizes the thermal mass of the building to achieve thermal comfort of the indoor space. In TABS, chilled water is circulated through the pipes embedded in the building structures. Chilled water removes the heat from the indoor and …

Utilizing Wearable Devices To Design Personal Thermal Comfort Model, Mostafa Rafaie, Mehari Tesfay, Fadi Alsaleem

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Apart from the common environmental factors such as relative humidity, radiant and ambient temperatures, studies have confirmed that thermal comfort significantly depends on internal personal parameters such as metabolic rate, age and health status. This is manifested as a difference in comfort levels between people residing under the same roof, and hence no general comprehensive comfort model satisfying everyone. Current and newly emerging advancements in state of the art wearable technology have made it possible to continuously acquire biometric information. This work proposes to access and exploit this data to build personal thermal comfort model. Relying on various supervised machine …

Method For Radon Measurement In Residential Sewer Connections, David Yuill Jul 2018

Method For Radon Measurement In Residential Sewer Connections, David Yuill

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Radon gas is the most deadly indoor air pollutant. In the US it is responsible for over 20,000 deaths per year. Residential exposure is typically the largest portion of a person’s annual exposure, so a great deal of research has been done to understand the pathways that radon can follow to enter a house. Since radon emanates from the ground, it is present in high concentration in soil gas. Recent research on the vapor intrusion of volatile organic compounds from subsurface sources into a test house concluded that the sewer line is an important preferential pathway. Despite the potential for …

Perceived air quality is an important aspect in current guidelines and standards for indoor environment. It represents occupants’ real feeling about indoor air and affected by almost all environmental parameters, such as the temperature, the relative humidity, the air movement, and et al. Studies were conducted mainly in controlled climate chambers or air-conditioned spaces, rarely in natural ventilated spaces. In this paper, the effects of temperature and air movement on perceived air quality in natural ventilated classrooms are investigated. The indoor environmental parameters in 7 classrooms for 35 lessons are continuously measured and the students in class are asked to …

Thermal Performance Evaluation Of A Residential Solar/Gas Hybrid Water Heating System, Saroj Karki, Karl R. Haapala, Brian M. Fronk Jul 2018

Thermal Performance Evaluation Of A Residential Solar/Gas Hybrid Water Heating System, Saroj Karki, Karl R. Haapala, Brian M. Fronk

International High Performance Buildings Conference

In climate regions with lower average daily solar radiation, such as the Pacific Northwest, a solar energy collector might not economically satisfy year-round domestic water heating demands, requiring an auxiliary unit, such as a natural gas water heater. Previous studies of such hybrid systems have shown that the efficiencies achieved while running in combined solar/gas mode was lower than expected. This inefficiency was attributed to a reduction in gas burner efficiency when the process fluid was partially pre-heated by the solar input. To predict the actual energy and cost savings under various design conditions, the performance of solar/gas hybrid systems …

An Economic Model Predictive Control Framework For Distributed Embedded Battery Applications, Nishith R. Patel, James B. Rawlings, Matthew J. Ellis, Michael J. Wenzel, Robert D. Turney

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Since building heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are significant consumers of primary energy, considerable efforts are being made to improve energy efficiency and decrease energy costs in these applications. Notably, substantial opportunities in the area of HVAC control exist for decreasing energy costs by shifting loads from peak periods to off-peak periods in the presence of time-varying utility prices. This load shifting is also beneficial for power companies since it results in a more constant total load allowing them to operate more efficiently. Economic model predictive control (MPC) has been shown to significantly decrease the energy costs of …

Integrated Platform For Whole Building Hvac System Automation And Simulation, Lina Yang, Yuhui Kuang, Yuan Yuan, Jinlei Ding, Yonghua Zhu

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Integrated optimal control strategies can reduce the overall building HVAC system energy consumption as well as improved air quality resulting in improved health and cognitive function for the occupants. However, it is time consuming to quantitatively evaluate the design-intended building HVAC automation system performance before on-site deployment, because: 1) the building and HVAC system design specs are in 2D or 3D drawings that require significant efforts to develop the system steady state or dynamic models based on them; 2) the building HVAC control strategies are designed and implemented in building automation (BA) system that could not smoothly connect with the …

Thermal Comfort Analysis Of Displacement Ventilation System Coupled With Passive Chilled Beams, Zhu Shi, Qingyan Chen Jul 2018

Thermal Comfort Analysis Of Displacement Ventilation System Coupled With Passive Chilled Beams, Zhu Shi, Qingyan Chen

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Displacement ventilation (DV) has been widely studied in literature, and is currently used in enclosed environments like office buildings. Although DV has been shown to be able to provide better indoor air quality in the occupied zone than conventional mixing ventilation (MV), its capability of removing heat is usually limited. Since it supplies air directly to occupied zone, the temperature of supply air is inevitably higher than that in MV. Meanwhile, passive chilled beams (PCB), which cool occupied space by running chilled water through beams at ceiling level, has been reported to have a high heat removal capability, and can …

A Case Study Of Economic Optimization Of Hvac Systems Based On The Stanford University Campus Airside And Waterside Systems, Nishith R. Patel, Michael J. Risbeck, James B. Rawlings, Christos T. Maravelias, Michael J. Wenzel, Robert D. Turney

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Commercial buildings account for $200 billion per year in energy expenditures, with heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems accounting for most of these costs. In energy markets with time-varying prices and peak demand charges, a significant potential for cost savings is provided by using thermal energy storage to shift energy loads. Since most implementations of HVAC control systems do not optimize energy costs, they have become a primary focus for new strategies aimed at economic optimization. Model predictive control (MPC) has emerged as one popular method to achieve this load shifting, while respecting system constraints. MPC uses a model …

Development Of A New Framework For Daylighting Simulation With Dynamic Shading Devices, Cong Thanh Do, Ying-Chieh Chan

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Daylight plays an important role in building design. It affects occupant’s activities, reduces energy demand and supports human health. Most of daylighting simulation software does not capture occupant’s behavior or shading’s dynamic behavior. Daysim is the only one that calculates dynamic shading devices by using lightswitch model but it has limitation. It is unable to use other automated control algorithms or capture occupant’s behavior and is also unable to simulate advanced shading devices which can only be described by bidirectional distribution function such as light redirecting films. A new framework was developed based on Radiance three-phase method to enable the …

Numerical Analysis Of Time Required For De-Stratification In Warehouses, Michael D. Polander, Elsa D. Harder, Joesph F. Junker, Brian M. Fronk

International High Performance Buildings Conference

A significant source of energy consumption comes from maintaining desired indoor environment conditions in warehouses and other industrial facilities. To combat the raising energy costs, studies into more efficient heating and cooling strategies has been a topic of consideration for a number of years. One of the areas of investigation is the implications of a thermally stratified environment. In heating, removing the stratification phenomena has been linked to savings in the cost of fuel to heat an environment. Whereas in cooling a highly stratified environment is desired. The primary method of de-stratification is the utilization of ceiling fans. The use …

Smart WiFi thermostats have gained an increasing foothold in the residential building market. The data emerging from from these thermostats is transmitted to the cloud. Companies like Nest and Emerson Climate Technologies are attempting to use this data to add value to their customers. This overarching theme establishes the foundation for this research. This research seeks to utilize WiFi data from the Emerson Climate Technologies’ Helix test house to: develop a dynamic model to predict real time cooling demand and then apply this model to running ‘what-if’ thermostat scheduling scenarios with the ultimate goal of reducing energy use in the …

Comfort-Based Optimal Temperature Setpoint Calculation, Andrew Holthaus, Mostafa Rafaie, Fadi Alsaleem Jul 2018

Comfort-Based Optimal Temperature Setpoint Calculation, Andrew Holthaus, Mostafa Rafaie, Fadi Alsaleem

International High Performance Buildings Conference

General practice in current building HVAC control is to select building temperature setpoints that comply with ASHRAE Standard 55. By meeting this standard, based on the PMV comfort model, 80% of building occupants should be satisfied with their thermal environment. However, unfortunately, this is rarely the case. One possible reason for this is the variation in occupant activity and clothing that are usually assumed default values using this standard. In this work, we present an iterative-based algorithm to solve this problem. The algorithm solves the PMV inverse model equation to determine the optimal temperature setpoint while inferring human activity level …

A Hierarchical Model Predictive Control Approach For Battery Systems, Ranjeet Kumar, Michael J. Wenzel, Matthew J. Ellis, Mohammad N. Elbsat, Kirk H. Drees, Victor M. Zavala

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Applications in energy systems often require to simultaneously miti- gate long-term peak and short-term electricity costs. The long-term peak electricity demand cost, known as demand charge, constitutes an important component of the electricity bills for large consumption units like building campuses or manufacturing plants. This poses a challenging multiscale planning problem that should make decisions at fine timescales while mitigating long-term costs. We present a hierarchical model predictive control (MPC) approach to tackle this problem in the context of stationary battery systems. The goal is to determine the optimal charge-discharge policy for the battery to minimize the monthly demand charge. …

International High Performance Buildings Conference

A numerical study on the indoor thermal environment served a novel air source heat pump powered bed-based space radiation heating (ASHP-BBSH) system is reported in this paper. This novel system combines the merits from a Chinese Kang, or a heated bed, widely used in northern rural China and a standard ASHP system, which can provide localized space heating via both convection and radiation to maintain a comfortable indoor thermal environment, at reduced energy use. In this novel bed-based system, a bed is heated and thus used as a radiator for providing space heating at both daytime and nighttime. In this …

Air Source Heat Pump Systems: Control Strategy Based On The Knowledge Of The Time Evolution Of The Electricity Price In The Italian Context, Elena Bee, Alessandro Prada, Paolo Baggio Jul 2018

Air Source Heat Pump Systems: Control Strategy Based On The Knowledge Of The Time Evolution Of The Electricity Price In The Italian Context, Elena Bee, Alessandro Prada, Paolo Baggio

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Motivation: The transition toward a decentralized energy system and the increased generation of electricity from renewable energy sources, that have low predictability, obviously affects the management of the grid. One of the consequences to be expected is a larger variation of the electricity prices (according to the season and/or the time of the day) as a function of the availability of the renewable sources. When electric heat pumps are used for domestic space heating and cooling the total energy cost can then be reduced if the system is properly controlled. In particular, when the tariff is known in advance (and …
