Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation With Interposed Abdominal Compression In Dogs, Sandra H. Ralston, Charles F. Babbs, Mark J. Niebauer
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation With Interposed Abdominal Compression In Dogs, Sandra H. Ralston, Charles F. Babbs, Mark J. Niebauer
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
This study was conducted to evaluate the hemodynamic effectiveness of a new modification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), termed interposed abdominal compression- CPR (IAC-CPR). IAC-CPR utilizes all the steps of standard CPR with the addition of abdominal compressions interposed during the release phase of chest compression. Ventricular fibrillation was induced electrically in 10 anesthetized dogs, and either IAC-CPR or standard CPR was initiated while arterial and venous blood pressures and cardiac output were monitored. The two CPR methods were alternated every three minutes over a period of thirty minutes. The addition of interposed abdominal compressions to standard CPR improved arterial pressures …

Further To My Egg: The Story Of An Australian Library Campaign, Arthur Mortimer
Further To My Egg: The Story Of An Australian Library Campaign, Arthur Mortimer
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The Prime Minister of Australia, Mr. Malcolm Fraser, once said:
"If books and libraries are to compete in the kind of world in which we find ourselves, and in the kind of world in which we must live, if they are to be allowed to make the contribution to the quality of life which I know is within the possibility of things in this area, a more active advocacy for books and for libraries and what they can achieve is required, because the 20th Century does not permit passive salesmanship to succeed".
And there is some truth in Mr. Fraser's …
Dilemmas Of Document Communication, Axel Andersen
Dilemmas Of Document Communication, Axel Andersen
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The information explosion of the last century has had profound effects upon the entire society: The number of publications has increased enormously, and important consequences have been the development of bibliographic tools, of libraries and an improved cooperation between libraries. Computer technology has made a storage of bibliographic information in big, international data bases possible, and complex networks are now being established. As bibliographies and catalogues in their paper-ver si ons thus are disappearing, other sorts of literature are going to be replaced by on-line accessible data bases, and telephone directories, sales catalogues etc. are soon to disappear in their …
Communication Skills: The Role Of The Library School, B. Meakin
Communication Skills: The Role Of The Library School, B. Meakin
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
It is becoming increasingly necessary for the librarian to be an active communicator. We can no longer be content to assume and perpetuate the passive role which history and our own public image have assigned to us. The librarian needs to project his personality to create the optimum circumstances for transmitting and disseminating information.
Given that this is the case, a co-ordinated and intensive effort is needed to produce and train librarians capable of communicating easily and effectively with subordinates, peers, superiors and most important the community. It is suggested that such an effort could best be instigated in the …
Public Relations Of Scientific Libraries In The Federal Republic Of Germany, Y. A. Haase
Public Relations Of Scientific Libraries In The Federal Republic Of Germany, Y. A. Haase
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Up until now, scientific libraries in the Federal Republic of Germany have been very reserved about public relations. One of the reasons for this attitude has been insecurity about the application of the specific methods used in public relations. For this reason the Deutsches Bibliotheksinstitut (West Berlin) organized a project in 1978 that is meant to create the methodological preconditions for public relations in scientific libraries. The methods are to be tried out first in a model of local public relations at one library. The Hessische Landes- und Hochschulbibliothek (Hessian State and University Library) in Darmstadt has been chosen to …
Information Services - An Overlooked Component In The Third World Decision Making Process - Experiences From Unesco Missions, Björn V. Tell
Information Services - An Overlooked Component In The Third World Decision Making Process - Experiences From Unesco Missions, Björn V. Tell
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The growth of the so called knowledge industries in the industrialized countries is a trend that has no visible traits in the Third World. The insight about the role of knowledge and information as important components in policy making has not come to surface. Also other components for the decision making process, such as skilled manpower , equipment, energy and dynamism may be lacking. However, together these components form a complex that can help to improve the quality of the decision making process.
Few of the less developed countries - the LDCs - realize that knowledge and information could transpire …
Communicating Scientific Information Through A University Library Network, Dennis Shaw
Communicating Scientific Information Through A University Library Network, Dennis Shaw
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Besides the widely accepted connotation of primary and secondary sources of scientific information it is postulated that a tertiary source may be identified. These three categories are defined and their role is related to (i) the pursuit of fundamental research at the frontier of knowiedge, (ii) the assimilation of the established discoveries into the traditional body of scientific literature and (iii) archiving for posterity.
It is no longer possible completely to separate these categories nor to identify distinct media responsible for information transfer and storage. However, we can identify a hierarchy of media and each element within the hierarchy can …

HAEFFNERS MODEL, RESEARCH POLICY, INFORMATION FLOW, COMMUNICATIONS ABILITY, COMMUNICATION MEDIA MIX, INFORMATION MINDEDNESS DATABASES, INSPEC, ISMEC, MECHEN, DOMA, COMPENDEX, SAIDC-ST
Haeffners model of information flow and communication between research policy and implementation activities was transferred on integrated information flow between research, education, consuiting and informatics on one side, and the end-user on the other side.
For information flow neither the availability of documents, computers and communications, nor the information mindedness are sufficient, but the human activity is dominant.
Databases are in different fields of application differently aggregated and representative (Comparison between CHEMABS, INSPEC, ISMEC, COMPENDEX).
The information field in mechanical …
Communicating With The New Electronic Libraries, Charles T. Meadow
Communicating With The New Electronic Libraries, Charles T. Meadow
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
New library and publishing technological developments are discussed from the point of view of how they will affect a library searcher of the future. Any library can become the entry point to a world-wide network of libraries, making almost all the world's literature available to any searcher. This, in turn, imposes requirements for better means of control of a search and better terminals, as well as a change of focus on the part of the library. Libraries are seen as developing into communications centers whose primary mission is helping users solve search problems, rather than repositories of information packages.

Evaluation Of A Segment-Based Landsat Full-Frame Approach To Crop Area Estimation, M. M. Hixson, S. M. Davis, M. E. Bauer
LARS Symposia
Accurate and timely crop production information is a critical need in today's economy. During the past decade, satellite remote sensing has been increasingly recognized as a means for crop identification and estimation of crop areas. The Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) records as a single data point (pixel) a region on the ground about one acre (0.5 ha) in size. When estimates of crop areas are desired for large regions, a statistical sampling scheme is required as it is not feasible to examine all of the pixels in the region of interest. The development of a sampling strategy which is both …

Image Registration System In The Landsat-D Production Environment, Peter Kiss, Paul Arnold, John Goldstine
LARS Symposia
An effort is underway to develop an automated image registration system for the Landsat-D Ground Segment. This system will be capable of providing accurate control point (CP) location errors in imagery that has been corrected using system models. A part of this effort consisted of studying various image enhancement techniques, correlation techniques and subpixel registration methods. Presented here is an overview of the registration system developed, along with the study results that led to the choices of techniques incorporated.
Although much previous work exists in this area, it is believed that some of the methods and findings are new. It …
Retrieval Of Coastal Water Information From Landsat Mss Data, Sueo Ueno
Retrieval Of Coastal Water Information From Landsat Mss Data, Sueo Ueno
LARS Symposia
In recent years an inverse problem of determining optical parameters of air-water system from the remotely sensed spectral radiance of water has deserved much attention in the field of environmental monitoring. Particularly, optimization approach to the inference of optical properties of subsurface water from the measurements of multispectral scanner data of the sea has been developed analytically and computationally.
In the present paper, making use of the invariant embedding, an initial-value solution of the transfer equation in air-water system with allowance for the interaction of radiation at the system interface is provided. The Cauchy system of the scattering function under …

Teaching Library Co-Operation To Library Students, Ben Rugaas
Teaching Library Co-Operation To Library Students, Ben Rugaas
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
This paper discusses the need for cooperation between libraries, and the forms this may take with examples of both formal and informal cooperation. The author conc1udes that the profession of library and information science is in a state of change and that the library schools must try to train librarians for the future situation. With regard to library cooperation, any library school will have problems in teaching and motivating students for something that does not seem to exist in the real world of libraries. When it comes to promoting library cooperation, through education, there are problems on both the cognitive …

Dobis At The Bibliocentre, Doreen E. Carpenter
Dobis At The Bibliocentre, Doreen E. Carpenter
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The growth of the bibliocentre is traced from its origin in 1966 through to the selection, installation of the real time on-line DOBIS system, supported by internally designed and written programmes to load an existing database and produce output products. The methodology adopted for converting the database of approximately 400,000 records into a DOBIS format is described.
The role of DOBIS in achieving a high degree of efficiency to the workflow of the bibliocentre is examined in detail. The benefits, both to the network of users and the bibliocentre operation, resulting from DOBIS operating in-house, are highlighted. The versatility of …
