Imaging With Diffraction Tomography, Malcolm Slaney, A. C. Kak Feb 1985

Imaging With Diffraction Tomography, Malcolm Slaney, A. C. Kak

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The problem of cross sectional (tomographic) imaging bf objects with diffracting sources is addressed. Specifically the area of investigation is the effect of multiple scattering and attenuation phenomena in diffraction imaging. This work reviews the theory and limits of first order diffraction tomography and studies iterative techniques that can be used to improve the quality of tomographic imaging with diffracting sources. Conventional (straight-ray) tomographic algorithms are not valid when used with acoustic or microwave energy. Thus more sophisticated algorithms are needed; First order diffraction tomography uses a linearized version of the wave equation and gives an especially simple reconstruction algorithm. …

Final Report: Theory Of Advanced High Efficiency Concentrator Cells, Mark S. Lunstrom, R. J. Schwartz, C. M. Maziar, P. D. Demoulin

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The goal of this project was to begin -developing accurate, and ultimately predictive, device models for III-V concentrator cells. The project consisted of extending a one-dimensional numerical device model previously developed at Purdue to III-V solar cells. We also began verifying the accuracy of the code by comparing computed and measured solar cell characteristics. Gallium arsenide was selected because it is the most mature III-V technology and because GaAs solar cells have demonstrated high conversion efficiency [l,2,3]. The present device model should be useful in optimizing GaAs solar cells and forms a foundation that can be extended to other III-V …

Microprocessor- Oriented Algorithms For Data Communications, Veljko Milutinovic

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Data modem design has attracted a lot of scientific and commercial interest for more than three decades now. The field is important from a scientific point of view, since reliable data communications require very sophisticated solutions to many associated problems. From a commercial point of view its importance arises from the ever- rising needs for Computer networking and distributed processing in general. Modem algorithms are real-time in nature, so adequate technological support is important for modem design development. Advances in VLSI are opening new possibilities in this area and current trends toward integration of computing and communications are placing new …

Analysis And Implementation Of Median Type Filters, J. P. Fitch, E. J. Coyle, N. C. Gallagher Jul 1984

Analysis And Implementation Of Median Type Filters, J. P. Fitch, E. J. Coyle, N. C. Gallagher

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Median filters are a special class of ranked order filters used for smoothing signals. These filters have achieved- success in speech processing, image processing, and other impulsive noise environments where linear filters have proven inadequate. Although the implementation of a median filter requires only a simple digital operation, its properties are not easily analyzed. Even so, a number of properties have been exhibited in the literature. In this thesis, a new tool, known as threshold decomposition is introduced for the analysis and implementation of median type filters. This decomposition of multi-level signals into sets of binary signals has led to …

The Implications For Publishing Of Electronic Document Storage And Delivery, Maurice B. Line Jun 1983

The Implications For Publishing Of Electronic Document Storage And Delivery, Maurice B. Line

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The electronic storage and delivery of serial articles will affect not only libraries and their users but publishers, whose main market is libraries. In particular, the ability of libraries to acquire individual articles rather than whole serials could destroy the viability of conventional published serials and result in the use of market rather than quality criteria in deciding which articles to accept for 'publication': the system would become user-driven rather than author-driven. The large investment required for electronic publishing might lead to the take-over of traditional publishers by large corporations whose interests were purely commercial. Data-bases handling the electronic texts …

The Changing Role Of Secondary Information Services, Stella Keenan Jun 1983

The Changing Role Of Secondary Information Services, Stella Keenan

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Secondary serial publications (abstracting and indexing services) are, by their nature, closely linked to the primary journal literature. They are affected by the publication pattern and processes of the primary serials, and developments in technology and communication facilities. In the 1960s and 1970s it was generally agreed that secondary services could be divided into disciplines oriented services and mission or project oriented services. This long established division is currently changing as secondary services have become increasingly flexible and more concerned than ever with user requirements.

Technological developments and the continuing economic constraints are exerting pressure on the abstracting and indexing …

Serials And "Grey Literature", Dieter Schmidmaier Jun 1983

Serials And "Grey Literature", Dieter Schmidmaier

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

"Grey literature" is literature which is not directly accessible. Its procurement, exploitation, storage and incorporation in information systems can only be carried out under complicated conditions.

Journals in the sense of "Grey literature" are:

  1. (Scientific) journals published by universities, academies and research institutes, as well as periodic publications about the results of research issued by firms engaged in such work.
  2. Journals and newspapers published by parties, organisations, associations, cooperatives, companies, libraries and museums.
  3. Journals which do not contain original scientific contributions, as well as those issued by book clubs and other organisations which publish technical literature and also belles-lettres.

The University Library Hannover And Technische Informationsbibliothek As A Library Of Last Resort - Or As A Library Of First Resort. Some Aspects Of The Operation Of The Largest Technical Library In The Federal Republic Of Germany, H. Drubba

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Technische Informationsbibliothek Hannover (TIB) is one of the four central subject libraries in the Federal Republic of Germany. TIB was founded in 1959 and established in Hannover because here a fairly large and comprehensive technical library existed, the present University Library Hannover (UB Hannover).

Both libraries receive among themselves currently about 19.000 serials (among this number many of the Soviet 'Trudy' or 'Sbornik' type series). Not only the literature of technology is collected but also of the basic sciences (mathematics, physics, and chemistry). The serials are collected comprehensively, regardless of language, country of origin, or 'scientific' level, in fact a …

Resource Sharing: The Pesent Situation And The Likely Effect Of Electronic Technology, Maurice B. Line Jun 1983

Resource Sharing: The Pesent Situation And The Likely Effect Of Electronic Technology, Maurice B. Line

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The increasing attention given to resource sharing as a concept is not matched by practical progress; shortage of funds makes it more desirable but less practicable, whether libraries try to share their own resources or share a central facility. Many of the obstacles to sharing, such as limited local resources and the inability to handle much external demand, are intrinsic and cannot be solved by technology, but it can nevertheless alleviate some of the procedural hindrances, such as union list construction, maintenance and access and the transmission and switching of requests. The application of electronic technology to document transmission is …

An Assessment Of Choice As A Tool For Selection, John P. Schmitt, E. Stewart Saunders Jan 1983

An Assessment Of Choice As A Tool For Selection, John P. Schmitt, E. Stewart Saunders

Libraries Research Publications

Reviews in Choice for 310 books were analyzed for how highly they were recommended for college libraries. Each book was given a rating on a scale from 1 to 5 to reflect this recommendation. Circulation records for each book covering a 2 to 3.5 year span in the Purdue General Library were also obtained, and a correlation was used to establish a relation between level of recommendation and the use of the book. A Spearman rank order correlation of .137 (p = .008) was found, indicating only a weak relationship between the levels of recommendation and use. When the sample …

The Mobility Enterprise - Improving Auto Productivity, F T. Sparrow, Jon D. Fricker, Robert K. Whitford Mar 1982

The Mobility Enterprise - Improving Auto Productivity, F T. Sparrow, Jon D. Fricker, Robert K. Whitford

Purdue Road School

The Mobility Enterprise is a particular version of a shared vehicle fleet, aimed at solving the problem of low automobile productivity. The automobile consumes a large portion of America’s transportation energy supply. It also operates much of the time with unused capacity: vacant seats and empty cargo space. Since programs to fill those vacant seats —ride sharing and high occupancy vehicle incentives —have fallen so far short of their objectives, a new approach is warranted. The enterprise’s central concept is matching vehicle attributes to travel needs. Generally, a household purchases vehicles for those few trips that require a large capacity, …

Equipment For Local Hyperthermia Therapy Of Cancer, Charles F. Babbs, James R. Oleson, John A. Pearce Jan 1982

Equipment For Local Hyperthermia Therapy Of Cancer, Charles F. Babbs, James R. Oleson, John A. Pearce

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Rapid improvements in hyperthermia apparatus are being achieved by industrial and university-based research groups that have already led to the marketing of a variety of commercial systems for heat therapy of malignancy. These tissue heating systems employ microwaves, capacitively or inductively coupled radiofrequency current, or high intensity ultrasound to produce controlled local heating of tumor tissues. No single system is superior to others in all applications; each has its limitations.
