Use Of Image Processing Techniques For The Analysis Of Echocardiographic Images, Enrique Garcia-Melendo, Edward J. Delp
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Echocardiography is a medical imaging modality that uses ultrasound in order to obtain cross sectional views of the heart. The basic problem in the use of echocardiography is the ability to obtain a reliable set of physical parameters related to cardiac status, so that assessment of heart disease can be performed automatically. This work overviews different image processing techniques used in the analysis of two dimensional echocardiographic images. After reviewing how the echocardiographic image formation process works, an outline of the general processing steps from image acquisition to automatic detection of important features is presented. Special emphasis on cardiac image …

Robot Control Computation In Microprocessor Systems With Multiple Arithmetic Processors, Bo Li, Shaheen Ahmad
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this paper we address the problem of designing a high performance robot controller with multiple arithmetic processing units (APU’s). One attractive feature about this controller is that a minimum number of special purpose hardware components are needed, and in fact off the shelf components can be used. In the controller described in this paper, one main processor (MPU) schedules a number of APU’s to produce the computational throughput. In this design an efficient scheduling algorithm plays the most important role in the system performance. DF/IHS* algorithm [8] is an efficient algorithm that solves "strong" NP-hard problems of scheduling a …
Experimental And Theoretical Studies On Design Calculations For Latent Heat Storage, Dieter Lindemann
Experimental And Theoretical Studies On Design Calculations For Latent Heat Storage, Dieter Lindemann
Open Access Theses
Research was conducted to obtain design data of latent heat-of-fusion thermal energy storage (LHTES) devices. The devices studied utilize a porous medium (PM) to increase the effective conductivity of the storage system. Therefore the melting and freezing process is accelerated. Metal shavings and metal spheres were used as porous media and water as the phase change medium (PCM). A simple experimental method to measure the conductivity of a water-metal mixture or ice-metal mixture was applied to obtain conductivity data. These measurements can be considered fairly accurate because measured conductivity of pure water and of pure ice agreed very well with …
Colorimetric Assay For Methanesulfinic Acid In Biological Samples, Charles F. Babbs, Melissa J. Gale
Colorimetric Assay For Methanesulfinic Acid In Biological Samples, Charles F. Babbs, Melissa J. Gale
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
We describe a simple colorimetric method to measure 30 to 300 M concentrations of sulfinic acids in biologic samples. The procedure employs the coupling reaction of an aromatic diazonium salt (Ar-N=N+) with the sulfinic acids (RSOOH) to produce a colored diazosulfone derivative (Ar-N=N-SOOR), which can be selectively extracted into an organic solvent. Linearity and noninterference by liver homogenate, phenols, amines, and thousand-fold or greater excesses of sulfate, thiol, and dimethyl sulfoxide are demonstrated. Sensitivity of the method is about 10 nmol per sample. Because methanesulfinic acid is the principal product of the action of hydroxyl radicals upon dimethyl sulfoxide, and …

Architectural Approaches For Gallium Arsenide Exploitation In High-Speed Computer Design, David Allen Fura
Architectural Approaches For Gallium Arsenide Exploitation In High-Speed Computer Design, David Allen Fura
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Continued advances in the capability of Gallium Arsenide (GaAs)technology have finally drawn serious interest from computer system designers. The recent demonstration of very large scale integration (VLSI) laboratory designs incorporating very fast GaAs logic gates herald a significant role for GaAs technology in high-speed computer design:1 In this thesis we investigate design approaches to best exploit this promising technology in high-performance computer systems. We find significant differences between GaAs and Silicon technologies which are of relevance for computer design. The advantage that GaAs enjoys over Silicon in faster transistor switching speed is countered by a lower transistor count capability for …
