Automated Construction Data Management System, Bob G. Mccullouch Jan 1991

Automated Construction Data Management System, Bob G. Mccullouch

JTRP Technical Reports

Project engineers and managers involved in construction spend a disproportionate amount of time collecting and processing construction data. This processing of data typically causes the construction manager to be distracted from the more important task of supervising and controlling the project. The amount of construction data will most likely continue to expand in the future creating more of a burden on the construction manager. So reducing the volume of data most likely will not occur. New innovative data management systems that utilize the latest in computer and automatic identification technologies should be developed. This report describes such a system for …

The Damping Of Panels By Thick Layers Of Elastic Porous Media, Nae-Ming Stuart Shiau, T J. Wahl, J Stuart Bolton May 1990

The Damping Of Panels By Thick Layers Of Elastic Porous Media, Nae-Ming Stuart Shiau, T J. Wahl, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

In this paper a technique is presented for calculating the response of a panel to a line force input when loaded by both a finite‐depth layer of elastic porous material and a heavy fluid. Damping theories normally require that an attached damping layer be thin compared to the flexural wavelength in the base panel. Here this requirement is avoided by allowing explicitly for wave propagation within the damping layer. Specifically, the porous damping layer is modeled using a theory derived by Biot that allows for the existence of two dilatational waves and a transverse wave. Conditions required to couple the …

Father’S Care – Involvement, Influence, And Affection: Three Keys To Father-Child Relationships, Charles A. Smith Mar 1990

Father’S Care – Involvement, Influence, And Affection: Three Keys To Father-Child Relationships, Charles A. Smith

Historical Documents of the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service Archive

Though they may sometimes find it difficult to express their feelings, most fathers care about their children and families. In a 1980 Gallup poll, six out of ten fathers said their families were “the most important element of my life at this time.” Only 8 percent said their families were unimportant to them. When asked what they found most satisfying about their families, fathers rated “children,” “closeness,” and “being together” as personally important.

Free Radicals And The Etiology Of Colon Cancer, Charles F. Babbs Jan 1990

Free Radicals And The Etiology Of Colon Cancer, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

This hypothesis paper reviews diverse evidence suggesting that intracolonic production of oxygen radicals may play a role in carcinogenesis. The hypothesis began to evolve when the author made the chance discovery that 1/10,000 dilutions of feces generated detectable quantities of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (HO). The rate of HO formation, detected using DMSO as a molecular probe, was quite remarkable, corresponding to that which would be produced by over 10,000 rads of gamma irradiation per day, absorbed in the periphery of the fecal mass adjacent to the mucosa. The relatively high concentrations of iron in feces, together with the ability …

The Use Of The Discrete Fourier Transform To Calculate The Spatial Response Of Damped Panels, Thomas J. Wahl, J Stuart Bolton Jan 1990

The Use Of The Discrete Fourier Transform To Calculate The Spatial Response Of Damped Panels, Thomas J. Wahl, J Stuart Bolton

Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories

In this paper we present a technique for calculating the vibration response of damped panels when forced by a line input. The damping that will be considered here is provided either by radiation into an adjacent acoustic medium (including porous media) or by a damping treatment applied to the panel, or both. It is well-known that formal solutions to problems of this sort are easily obtained using wavenumber transform tehniques as outlined in recent books by Junger and Feit and by Fahy. However, the wavenumber domain solution must then be inverse transformed to obtain the spatial response. This inversion may …

Robust Techniques For Bearing Estimation In Contaminated Gaussian Noise, R. L. Kashyap, David D. Lee, N. Srinivasa Dec 1989

Robust Techniques For Bearing Estimation In Contaminated Gaussian Noise, R. L. Kashyap, David D. Lee, N. Srinivasa

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The problem of estimating directions-of-arrival (DOA) of radiating sources from measurements provided by a passive array of sensors is frequently encountered in radar, sonar, radio astronomy and seismology. In this study various robust methods for the DOA estimation problem are developed, where the term robustness refers to insensitivity against small deviation in the underlying Gaussian noise assumption. The first method utilizes an eigenvector method and robust reconstruction of the correlation matrix by time series modeling of the array data; Secondly, a decentralized processing scheme is considered for geographically distributed array sites. The method provides reliable estimates even when a few …

Performance Characteristics Of Switched Reluctance Motor Drive, M. Moallem, C. M. Ong Aug 1989

Performance Characteristics Of Switched Reluctance Motor Drive, M. Moallem, C. M. Ong

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In this report, methods and computational techniques for predicting the static and steady state characteristics of a switched reluctance motor drive are developed and the predicted characteristics are compared with experimental results. Because of high local saturation and narrow airgap in the SR motor, accurate calculation of the static characteristics of the torque, flux linkage, inductances, and speed emf from its FE field solution is not straightforward. For the purpose of this study, a two-dimensional finite element model is developed to handle the nonlinear magnetic field inside the machine. Based on a thorough study of the potential sources of errors …

Identification Of Concealed Insect Infestations Using A Passive Ultrasound Monitor, Richard E. Klaassen, Eric S. Furgason Aug 1989

Identification Of Concealed Insect Infestations Using A Passive Ultrasound Monitor, Richard E. Klaassen, Eric S. Furgason

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Concealed insect infestations in stored grain are responsible for large economic losses worldwide, and have traditionally been difficult to detect arid quantify. A simple method of infestation detection and quantification has been developed, taking advantage of the ultrasonic emissions generated by the feeding activity of the insects. The acoustic signals generated by the insects are characterized as bursts of energy in the frequency range of 5 to 75 kHz, varying with the variety of seed being examined. These signals can be detected reliably by monitoring the seeds for sounds in a frequency band between 30 and 50 kHz. The stage …

Effect Of Oxygen Concentration On The Formation Of Malondialdehyde-Like Material In A Model Of Tissue Ischemia And Reoxygenation, Steven C. Salaris, Charles F. Babbs Jan 1989

Effect Of Oxygen Concentration On The Formation Of Malondialdehyde-Like Material In A Model Of Tissue Ischemia And Reoxygenation, Steven C. Salaris, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

This study was conducted to explore the functional relationship between oxygen concentration during tissue reoxygenation after ischemia and the extent of postischemic lipid peroxidation, an indicator of reoxygenation injury. Excised rat liver or kidney tissue was rendered ischemic for 1 h at 37°C, minced into 1 mm3 fragments, and then reoxygenated for 1 h in flasks of buffered salt solution containing various amounts of oxygen. Production of malondialdehyde-like material (MDA) was measured to indicate lipid peroxidation. MDA production was minimal at oxygen tensions less than 10 mmHg, increased sharply from 10 to 50 mmHg, and plateaued at approximately 100 mmHg. …
