Harry Potter And The Susceptible Child Audience, Kara Lynn Andersen Jun 2005

Harry Potter And The Susceptible Child Audience, Kara Lynn Andersen

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Kara Lynn Andersen, in her paper "Harry Potter and the Susceptible Child Audience," argues for a rethinking of assumptions of child audiences as passive readers and viewers through an analysis of the Harry Potter phenomenon. Andersen argues that instead of categorizing children as passive and homogenous subjects of analysis, they should instead be incorporated as participants in the discourse about children's books and films. Although frequently figured as especially susceptible to the affects of advertising and other media, young Harry Potter fans are particularly visible as not only consumers of the texts, but creators of new texts. Using work done …

Developing A Global Information Learning Policy At Catholic University Of Louvain, Belgium, Fabienne Moreau, Frederic Brodkom

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Louvain-la-Neuve is located in Belgium, 25 km South-East from Brussels. The university comprises a large international community: 21000 students and a staff of 3000 academics and scientists and more than 2000 collaborators. There are more than 200 research units.

The Catholic University of Louvain was founded in 1425 in Louvain (Leuven) in the Flemish part of Belgium. But in 1968, due to political and linguistic reasons, the university was divided into 2 separated universities: a Flemish one which remained in Leuven and a French one, which moved to the French speaking part of Belgium. A new town was then created …

The Future Of The Academic Library And The Academic Librarian. A Delphi Study Reloaded, Blazej Feret, Marzena Marcinek

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

At the 20th IATUL Conference held in 1999 in Chania, Greece, the authors presented a paper The Future of the Academic Library and the Academic Librarian. A DELPHI Study 3. The aim of that study was to identify trends and present a probable scenario for the year 2005. After six years that have passed since the Conference in Chania, we live in a different world. Different not only because of terrorism and the latest natural disasters, but also because of changes in technology (e.g. the boom of mobile communication, transition from CD/DVD to online services, ease of digitization, etc.), internationalization …

Quantum Cascade Laser Gain Medium Modeling Using A Second-Nearest-Neighbor Sp3s* Tight-Binding Model, Jeremy Green, Timothy B. Boykin, Corrie D. Farmer, Michael Garcia, Charles N. Ironside, Gerhard Klimeck, Roger Lake, Colin R. Stanley May 2005

Quantum Cascade Laser Gain Medium Modeling Using A Second-Nearest-Neighbor Sp3s* Tight-Binding Model, Jeremy Green, Timothy B. Boykin, Corrie D. Farmer, Michael Garcia, Charles N. Ironside, Gerhard Klimeck, Roger Lake, Colin R. Stanley

Other Nanotechnology Publications

A ten-band sp3s∗ second-nearest-neighbor tight-binding model has been used to model the electronic structure of various AlxGa1−xAs quantum cascade laser gain media. The results of the calculations have been compared with experimental emission wavelength data, and it has been shown that the model predicts the photon energies at the peaks in the gain coefficient spectra agreeing, on average, to within 4 meV of the experimental values. Comparison of the results of the calculations with results from a two-band k · p model shows that the tight-binding model is able to find the X-like states simultaneously with the Γ-like states. These …

Airline Quality Rating 2005, Brent D. Bowen, Dean E. Headley Apr 2005

Airline Quality Rating 2005, Brent D. Bowen, Dean E. Headley

Airline Quality Rating Report

The Airline Quality Rating (AQR) was developed and first announced in early 1991 as an objective method for assessing airline quality on combined multiple performance criteria. This current report, the Airline Quality Rating 2005, reflects monthly Airline Quality Rating scores for 2004. AQR scores for the calendar year 2004 are based on 15 elements in four major areas that focus on airline performance aspects important to air travel consumers.

The Airline Quality Rating 2005 is a summary of month-by-month quality ratings for U.S. airlines that have at least 1% of domestic passenger volume during 2004. Using the Airline Quality Rating …

An Introduction To The Work Of Elfriede Jelinek, Nobel Laureate In Literature 2004, Andrea Bandhauer Mar 2005

An Introduction To The Work Of Elfriede Jelinek, Nobel Laureate In Literature 2004, Andrea Bandhauer

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "An Introduction to the Work of Elfriede Jelinek, Nobel Laureate in Literature 2004," Andrea Bandhauer explores reactions of the press to the Austrian writer Elfriede Jelinek after she received the 2004 Nobel Prize in Literature. Bandhauer discusses how the extreme irritation following this announcement was frequently directed at the author's public persona rather than at her work. Against this background, Bandhauer explores the ambivalent relationship of the public towards a politically and socially engaged and outspoken public figure who in her literary work produces highly hermetical texts. As a writer, Jelinek is preoccupied with language and form …

Generic Identity And Intertextuality, Marko Juvan Mar 2005

Generic Identity And Intertextuality, Marko Juvan

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Generic Identity and Intertextuality," Marko Juvan proposes that an anti-essentialist drive -- a characteristic of recent genology -- has led postmodern scholars to the conviction that genre is but a system of differences and that its matrix cannot be deduced from a particular set of apparently similar texts. Juvan argues that the concept of intertextuality may prove advantageous to explain genre identity in a different way: genres exist and function as far as they are embedded in social practices that frame intertextual and meta-textual links/references to prototypical texts or textual series. In Juvan's view, genres are cognitive …

Resonant Light Interaction With Plasmonic Nanowire Systems, Viktor Podolskiy, Andrey Sarychev, Evgenii Narimanov, Vladimir Shalaev

Other Nanotechnology Publications

We compare the optical response of isolated nanowires, double-wire systems, and Pi-structures, and show that their radiation is well described in terms of their electric and magnetic dipole moments. We also show that both dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability can be negative at optical and near infrared frequencies, and demonstrate the connection between the geometry of the system and its resonance characteristics. We conclude that plasmonic nanowires can be employed for novel negative-index materials. Finally, we demonstrate that it is possible to construct a nanowire-based,transparent nanoresonator' with dramatically enhanced intensity and metal concentration below 5%.

Comparative Three-Dimensional Imaging Of Living Neurons With Confocal And Atomic Force Microscopy, Helen Mcnally, Bartek Rajwa, Jennifer Sturgis, J. Paul Robinson

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Atomic force microscopy applications extend across a number of fields; however, limitations have reduced its effectiveness in live cell analysis. This report discusses the use of AFM to evaluate the three-dimensional (3-D) architecture of living chick dorsal root ganglia and sympathetic ganglia. These data sets were compared to similar images acquired with confocal laser scanning microscopy of identical cells. For this comparison we made use of visualization techniques which were applicable to both sets of data and identified several issues when coupling these technologies. These direct comparisons offer quantitative validation and confirmation of the character of novel images acquired by …

Remediation And Stabilization Of Soils Contaminated By Lead Resulting From The Removal Of Paint From Bridges, M. K. Banks, A. Paul Schwab Jan 2005

Remediation And Stabilization Of Soils Contaminated By Lead Resulting From The Removal Of Paint From Bridges, M. K. Banks, A. Paul Schwab

JTRP Technical Reports

Lead-based paints are commonly used for painting steel bridge structures. Soils in the immediate vicinity of older bridges have been contaminated with Pb as a result of normal weathering and peeling of the paint coupled with removal prior to repainting. The objectives of this project were to assess the extent of lead contamination near highway bridges and to evaluate phytoremediation and immobilization as means of remediation. We examined soils in the vicinity of approximately 20 bridges in Indiana that had been repainted recently and were know to have been painted originally with Pb-based paint. We found only three bridges in …

An Empirical Test Of Stakeholder Influence Strategies Model: Evidence From Business Downsizing In Taiwan , Philip C.F. Tsai, C. Rosa Yeh, Shu-Ling Wu, Ing-Chung Huang

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

Frooman’s (1999) model of stakeholder influence strategy uses levels of resource dependence to determine the power of stakeholder influence. Our study provides initial empirical tests of his model applied in business downsizing. Data from 18 recently downsized firms in Taiwan, including 9 multi-national firms (MNC’s), were plotted against the Frooman model. We found that resource-dependence along as Frooman theorized could not explain the influence strategies stakeholders (in this case the employees) took in response to firms’ downsizing decisions. Further investigation revealed that the institutional factors had a significant effect on how firms structured their downsizing initiatives and hence changed the …

The rare tau lepton decays to four explicitly identified hadrons have been studied with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring using (7.56 +/- 0.15) fb(-1) of data collected near root s=10.58 GeV. The first statistically significant measurements of B(tau(-)-> K(-)pi(+)pi(-)pi(0)nu(tau),excludingK(0))=(7.4 +/- 0.8 +/- 1.1)x10(-4) and B(tau(-)-> K(-)K(+)pi(-)pi(0)nu(tau))=(5.5 +/- 1.4 +/- 1.2)x10(-5) are presented, including the first observation of the decay tau(-)-> K(-)omega nu(tau) with branching fraction, (4.1 +/- 0.6 +/- 0.7)x10(-4). We publish the first upper limit for B(tau(-)-> K(-)K(+)K(-)pi(0)nu(tau))< 4.8(6.1)x10(-6) at 90% (95%) confidence level. We measure for the first time the invariant mass distributions, which together with the branching fraction measurements are important ingredients that can be used to extract the standard model parameters, the strange quark mass, and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa element V-us.

Analysis And Optimization Of The Thermal Performance Of Microchannel Heat Sinks, Dong Liu, S V. Garimella Jan 2005

Analysis And Optimization Of The Thermal Performance Of Microchannel Heat Sinks, Dong Liu, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Purpose – To provide modeling approaches of increasing levels of complexity for the analysis of convective heat transfer in microchannels which offer adequate descriptions of the thermal performance, while allowing easier manipulation of microchannel geometries for the purpose of design optimization of microchannel heat sinks. Design/methodology/approach – A detailed computational fluid dynamics model is first used to obtain baseline results against which five approximate analytical approaches are compared. These approaches include a 1D resistance model, a fin approach, two fin-liquid coupled models, and a porous medium approach. A modified thermal boundary condition is proposed to correctly characterize the heat flux …

A Two-Temperature Model For Solid/Liquid Phase Change In Metal Foams, S. Krishnan, J. Y. Murthy, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Transient solid-liquid phase change occurring in a phase-change material (PCM) embedded in a metal foam is investigated. Natural convection in the melt is considered. Volume-averaged mass and momentum equations are employed, with the Brinkman- Forchheimer extension to the Darcy law to model the porous resistance. Owing to the difference in the thermal diffusivities between the metal foam and the PCM, local thermal equilibrium between the two is not assured. Assuming equilibrium melting at the pore scale, separate volume-averaged energy equations are written for the solid metal foam and the PCM and are closed using an interstitial heat transfer coefficient. The …

Guidelines For Data Collection Techniques And Methods For Roadside Station Origin-Destination Studies, Bryan P. Guy, Jon D. Fricker

JTRP Technical Reports

Origin-Destination studies are often used in transportation planning to determine the travel patterns (origin-destination matrix) of vehicles and goods in a particular area. Given these travel patterns, the impacts of alternative solutions to current and future transportation problems can be evaluated. Therefore, it is important that the travel patterns be accurately measured. However, it is not always clear what data collection method should be used to obtain the type of data needed, while maximizing quality and minimizing the time and cost. The objective of this research is to review both conventional and experimental techniques for roadside station OD studies, and …

Literary Cosmotopia And Nationalism In Ariel, Camilla Fojas Dec 2004

Literary Cosmotopia And Nationalism In Ariel, Camilla Fojas

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Camilla Fojas, in her paper "Literary Cosmotopia and Nationalism in Ariel," argues that turn-of-the-century cosmopolitan literary texts encoded political interests and that they were concerned with the proper way of being cosmopolitan and national at the same time, of forging literary and diplomatic parity between national and international interests. Unfortunately, this search for balance was beset by rhetorical and ideological prejudices manifest in phobic language about the corrupting forces of cosmopolitan effeminacy on national character. The conflict of cosmopolitanism with nationalism was played out as a kind of war between the sexes, as a gendered battle for dominance. This tension …

Hellenism, Hebraism, And The Eugenics Of Culture In E.M. Forster's Howards End, Seth Jacobowitz

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Seth Jacobowitz, in his paper "Hellenism, Hebraism, and the Eugenics of Culture in E.M. Forster's Howards End," explores how the culturalist principles of Hellenism and Hebraism theorized by Matthew Arnold as the basis of Englishness in Culture and Anarchy (1869) were incorporated into the text of E.M. Forster's Howards End (1910) to show the close institutional and conceptual linkages Forster shared with Arnold. Further, Jacobowitz seeks to bring Howards End into dialog with Forster's only major work of science fiction, The Machine Stops (1928), to address their mutual themes of eugenics, the racialization of class difference, and concerns over the …

Bicistronic And Fused Monocistronic Transcripts Are Derived From Adjacent Loci In The Arabidopsis Genome, Jyothi Thimmapuram, Hui Duan, Lei Liu, Mary A. Schuler

Cyber Center Publications

Comparisons of full-length cDNAs and genomic DNAs available for Arabidopsis thaliana described here indicate that some adjacent loci are transcribed into extremely long RNAs spanning two annotated genes. Once expressed, some of these transcripts are post-transcriptionally spliced within their coding and intergenic sequences to generate bicistronic transcripts containing two complete open reading frames. Others are spliced to generate monocistronic transcripts coding for fusion proteins with sequences derived from both loci. RT-PCR of several P450 transcripts in this collection indicates that these extended transcripts exist side by side with shorter monocistronic transcripts derived from the individual loci in each pair. The …
