Towards A Cultural Framework Of Audience Response And Television Violence, Lajos Császi
Towards A Cultural Framework Of Audience Response And Television Violence, Lajos Császi
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his paper "Towards a Cultural Framework of Audience Response and Television Violence" Lajos Császi argues that media violence is not a reification of social violence; rather, a popular ritual allowing contemporary societies to sublimate, to substitute, and to discuss aggression in the public sphere. Császi reviews the central questions of contemporary debates about television violence including Stuart Hall's thought on this topic and introduces the ideas of Elias, Geertz, Turner, Bettelheim, Benjamin, Girard, and others in order to locate the representation of violence in an interdisciplinary context. Using the genre of the horror film as an example, Császi suggests …
Audience, Sentimental Postmodernism, And Kiss Of The Spider Woman, Kimberly Chabot Davis
Audience, Sentimental Postmodernism, And Kiss Of The Spider Woman, Kimberly Chabot Davis
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Audience, Sentimental Postmodernism, and Kiss of the Spider Woman" Kimberly Chabot Davis analyzes the three media forms of Kiss of the Spider Woman -- novel, film, and musical -- and their reception by gay, bisexual, and heterosexual fans: Davis reads Kiss as a key example of a hybrid contemporary genre she designates as "sentimental postmodernism." Chabot Davis positions the text's dialogic negotiation between the popular and the postmodern in relation to the critical discourse of camp, as a form of sentimentality-cum-irony. Manuel Puig's novel offers a powerful rebuttal to the Frankfurt School's dismissal of sentimental mass culture …
Transnational Book Markets And Literary Reception In The Americas, Molly Metherd
Transnational Book Markets And Literary Reception In The Americas, Molly Metherd
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her paper "Transnational Book Markets and Literary Reception in the Americas," Molly Metherd argues that the most diffuse products of transnational cultural production in the Americas come from mass media productions packaged for transnational audiences -- i.e., Hollywood films, television shows, popular magazines, product advertisements -- and that tend to homogenize messages, promote stereotypes, and simplify complex issues. However, another effort to make sense of shifting relationships in the Americas is coming from a group of US-American and Spanish American literary figures. In their fiction, criticism, journalistic work, and public statements, such authors have been responding to the covalence …

Unicellular cyanobacteria have recently been recognized for their contributions to nitrogen fixation in marine environments, a function previously thought to be filled mainly by filamentous cyanobacteria such asTrichodesmium. To begin a systems level analysis of the physiology of the unicellular N2-fixing microbes, we have sequenced to completion the genome of Cyanothece sp. ATCC 51142, the first such organism.Cyanothece 51142 performs oxygenic photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation, separating these two incompatible processes temporally within the same cell, while concomitantly accumulating metabolic products in inclusion bodies that are later mobilized as part of a robust diurnal cycle. The 5,460,377-bp Cyanothece …
Material Parameter Retrieval Procedure For General Bi-Isotropic Metamaterials And Its Application To Optical Chiral Negative-Index Metamaterial Design, Do-Hoon Kwon, Douglas H. Werner, Alexander V. Kildishev, V. M. Shalaev
Material Parameter Retrieval Procedure For General Bi-Isotropic Metamaterials And Its Application To Optical Chiral Negative-Index Metamaterial Design, Do-Hoon Kwon, Douglas H. Werner, Alexander V. Kildishev, V. M. Shalaev
Birck and NCN Publications
A chiral optical negative-index metamaterial design of doubly periodic construction for the near-infrared spectrum is presented. The chirality is realized by incorporating sub-wavelength planar silver-aluminasilver resonators and arranging them in a left-handed helical (i.e., stair-step) configuration as a wave propagates through the metamaterial. An effective material parameter retrieval procedure is developed for general bi-isotropic metamaterials. A numerical design example is presented and the retrieved effective material parameters exhibiting a negative index of refraction are provided. (c) 2008 Optical Society of America.
Diesel Particulate Filter Diagnostics Using Correlation And Spectral Analysis, Pranati R. Surve
Diesel Particulate Filter Diagnostics Using Correlation And Spectral Analysis, Pranati R. Surve
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Masters Theses
Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) are used to trap the harmful particulate matter (PM) present in the exhaust of diesel engines. The particulate matter is trapped in and on a porous ceramic substrate to keep PM emissions low. The onboard diagnostics requirements enforced by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) require that the DPF perform well to keep emissions below certain specified levels. Further, should the DPF fail in any way, resulting in higher emission levels, this event must be detected by the engine control module. The objective of this work is to “detect failed DPF condition”. The temperature and pressure signals from …
Energy Conservation For Content-Based Image Retrieval On Mobile Devices, Karthik Kumar
Energy Conservation For Content-Based Image Retrieval On Mobile Devices, Karthik Kumar
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Masters Theses
Battery-powered mobile systems such as PDAs (personal digital assistants) and mobile phones play an increasing role in handling visual contents such as images. Thousands of images can be stored in a mobile system with the advances in memory technology; this creates the need for better organization and retrieval of the images. Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) provides a method to retrieve images based on their contents. In CBIR, images are represented and compared by high-dimensional vectors called features. Loading these features into memory and comparing them consumes a significant amount of energy. In this thesis, we present the first study …
Color Characterization And Modeling Of A Scanner, Sanjyot A. Gindi
Color Characterization And Modeling Of A Scanner, Sanjyot A. Gindi
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Masters Theses
The quality of digital color image capture systems like scanners and digital cameras is determined by the range of colors they can accurately sense and record. This range of colors is known as the color gamut of the system. Each image capture system has its own color space defined by its set of illuminants and color sensors. Such a device-dependent color space is specific and unique to the system. In order that these capture systems be evaluated and compared, the colors sensed by them need to be plotted in a common color space which is independent of any particular system. …

The atomistic simulations of electronic structures, using a tight binding model with millions of atoms, require solution of very large sparse Hermitian eigenvalue problems. To obtain the eigenpairs of interest in the interior of the spectrum, we must take advantage of the most efficient parallel numerical algorithms. Several methods have been developed and implemented in Nanoelectronic Modeling software package NEMO-3D, including (P)ARPACK, (Block) Lanczos and Tracemin. In this paper, the performance and tradeoffs of these algorithms for realistic models are discussed. The effectiveness of code optimization techniques such as SSE2 vectorization is also presented.

The ballistic performance of electron transport in nanowire transistors is examined using a 10 orbital sp3d5s* atomistic tight-binding model for the description of the electronic structure, and the top-of-the-barrier semiclassical ballistic model for calculation of the transport properties of the transistors. The dispersion is self consistently computed with a 2D Poisson solution for the electrostatic potential in the cross section of the wire. The effective mass of the nanowire changes significantly from the bulk value under strong quantization, and effects such as valley splitting strongly lift the degeneracies of the valleys. These effects are pronounced even further under filling of …

Nemo-3d Based Atomistic Simulation Of A Double Quantum Dot Structure For Spin-Blockaded Transport, Bhaskaran Muralidharan, Hoon Ryu, Zhen Huang, Gerhard Klimeck
Other Nanotechnology Publications
This work combines an atomistic electronic structure calculation with many-body rate equations to simulate the current-voltage (I–V) characteristics of a weakly coupled Double Quantum Dot (DQD) system in the spin-blockade regime. Here we performed a NEMO-3D based, atomistic simulation of the geometry of the DQD to obtain its single electron eigen-states, hopping parameters, and Coulomb integrals followed by the evaluation of I–V characteristics with the many-electron spectrum of the DQD system, derived from this single-electron parameter set. The many-electron spectra and wave-functions are evaluated by exact-diagonalization of the many-electron system. The Hamiltonian is constructed from single electron eigenstates, hopping parameters …

The quantum Hall effect in Graphene nanoribbons (GNR) is investigated with the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) based quantum transport model in the ballistic regime. The nearest neighbor tight-binding model based on pz orbital constructs the device Hamiltonian. GNRs of different edge geometries (Zigzag and Armchair) are considered. The magnetic field is included in both the channels and contact through Peierls substitution. Efficient algorithms for calculating the surface Green function are used to reduce computation time to enable simulating realistically large dimensions comparable to those used in experiments. Hall resistance calculations exactly reproduce the quantum Hall plateaus observed in the experiments. …
The Effect Of Sample Edge Conditions On Standing Wave Tube Measurements Of Absorption And Transmission Loss, Kwanwoo Hong, J Stuart Bolton
The Effect Of Sample Edge Conditions On Standing Wave Tube Measurements Of Absorption And Transmission Loss, Kwanwoo Hong, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
The acoustical properties of isotropic, elastic porous materials are now conventionally specified by a set of nine, frequency-independent macroscopic parameters: e.g., flow resistivity, tortuosity, viscous and thermal characteristic lengths, etc. When these properties are known, it is possible to predict the absorption performance of the material, for example, in arbitrary geometries. Conversely, it has become popular to infer the macroscopic parameters of porous materials by finding the set of parameters that results in an optimal match of measurements and prediction. The software packages FOAM-X and COMET/Trim, for example, offer inverse characterization features of this type. However, here it is shown …

Health Monitoring Procedures For Freeway Traffic Sensors, Volume 1: Research Report, Timothy J. Wells, Edward J. Smaglik, Darcy M. Bullock
Health Monitoring Procedures For Freeway Traffic Sensors, Volume 1: Research Report, Timothy J. Wells, Edward J. Smaglik, Darcy M. Bullock
JTRP Technical Reports
An important component of any ITS system is the network of sensors used to monitor the traffic performance throughout the freeway system. These freeway sensors are used to alert Traffic Management Center (TMC) dispatchers to incidents and to predict travel times for roadway users. Data quality is essential to maintain peak TMC operational efficiency and to maintain the public’s confidence in the information. The large number of sensors and data produced on a daily basis makes the use of human groundtruthing nearly impossible. Therefore an automated ongoing sensor data quality monitoring process must be implemented to identify the sensors in …

Natives, Nostalgia, And Nature In Children's Popular Film Narratives, C. Richard King
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his paper "Natives, Nostalgia, and Nature in Children's Popular Film Narratives," C. Richard King offers a critical reading in an effort to appreciate the entanglements of nature, natives, and nostalgia in children's narratives. In this context, an analysis of Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron Spirit affords an ideal occasion for such a reading because it centers on the relations between Native Americans, Euroamericans, and the natural world as it tells the story of a wild mustang living in western North America in the late nineteenth century. Indeed, as close examination reveals, the film uses race, gender, civilization, and wildness …
Race And Gender Representations In Advertising In Cable Cartoon Programming, Debra L. Merskin
Race And Gender Representations In Advertising In Cable Cartoon Programming, Debra L. Merskin
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her paper "Race and Gender Representations in Advertising in Cable Cartoon Programming," Debra L. Merskin explores what children see and what they learn about racial, ethnic, and gender identity in television advertisements. Merskin examines race and ethnicity in commercials on cable television, specifically on the Turner Cartoon Network, an environment devoted entirely to cartoons and to children. Her content analysis of 381 advertisements reveals that while White and African American children are overrepresented in relationship to their percentage of the U.S. population, other minority group children are rarely portrayed. In only one instance were children of color shown alone, …
