Children's Film As Social Practice, J. Zornado
Children's Film As Social Practice, J. Zornado
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his paper "Children's Film as Social Practice," J. Zornado argues that the animated feature is a genre distinct in its own right, and, although overlooked by film criticism up to now, deserves rigorous, scholarly attention. Zornado employs the term "iconology" to develop a foundation for a critical methodology indebted to Althusser, Foucault, and Lacan as well as contemporary film criticism. Iconology of the animated feature film is the study of the meaning systems of the dominant culture and the ways in which such systems are inscribed into all kinds of social practice geared, specifically, to seduce and inform the …

Children's Video Games As Interactive Racialization, Cathlena Martin
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Cathlena Martin explores in her paper "Children's Video Games as Interactive Racialization" selected children's video games. Martin argues that children's video games often act as reinforcement for the games' television and film counterparts and their racializing characteristics and features. In Martin's analysis the video games discussed represent media through which to analyze racial identities and ideologies. In making the case for positive female minority leads in children's video games, Martin examines the games and franchises of Rugrats and Dora the Explorer. She argues that the influx of games with a greater diversity of minority female characters has only been a …
A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Representation Of Asian Indian Folk Tales In Us-American Children's Literature, Sudeshna Roy
A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Representation Of Asian Indian Folk Tales In Us-American Children's Literature, Sudeshna Roy
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "A Critical Discourse Analysis of Representation of Asian Indian Folk Tales in US-American Children's Literature," Sudeshna Roy explores the representation of India in U.S. children's picture books by interpreting prevailing images of the subcontinent and its peoples and their impact on children's understandings. Roy analyzes three key elements -- titles, illustrations, and text -- identifying a set of predominant themes: nature and wild animals, poverty and hardship, spiritual hermits, and wit and common sense wisdom. From these findings, Roy suggests that Eurocentric imperial ideologies continue to inform the formulation of race, gender, and nation in U.S. children's …

Embedding And Detecting Machine Readable Data In Images Printed By Electrophotographic Printers, Vivek Shah
Embedding And Detecting Machine Readable Data In Images Printed By Electrophotographic Printers, Vivek Shah
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Masters Theses
Watermarking is a technique used to authenticate and distinguish original documents or images from the copied or forged ones. Many watermarking methods have been developed and are being used for printed documents and images. Though these current watermarking techniques can distinguish between original and forged documents, it is not possible to identify the source of the forged and counterfeit documents, knowledge of which is required in some cases to stop future forgeries. In this thesis we propose a machine readable watermarking technique for images, halftoned using clustered-dot halftoning technique and printed on electrophotographic printer, that can, not only identify forged …
Discovering The Library: Finding The Hidden Barriers To Success Using The Catalog, Ellen Safley
Discovering The Library: Finding The Hidden Barriers To Success Using The Catalog, Ellen Safley
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Over the past two years, the Catalog Committee at the University of Texas at Dallas used a verbal protocol analysis to research how students use the catalog system to find known items, to locate materials on a subject, and to evaluate the design and appearance of the interface. The research is attempting to evaluate the thought process and effectiveness of how students use the catalog system. The Library is conducting its third session to evaluate the changes made in the discovery process. During these sessions, the Library will incorporate a means to collect both the audio portion of the person’s …

Enticing The Google Generation: Web 2.0, Social Networking And University Students, Philip G. Kent
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Much has been written about Gen X, Y and Google Generation students in the higher education sector. Student-centred approaches, new pedagogies, a focus on quality management, information and learning commons initiatives all evidence greater attention to the generational needs of the Google Generation. New technologies and applications have also been harnessed to meet students in their ‘own space’.
Traditional library systems are being enhanced to include Web 2.0 functionality. Universities and their Libraries are establishing a presence in social network sites (eg Facebook, YouTube).
The paper analyses these trends, takes stock of these initiatives in the university library environment and …

Digital Library Initiatives In India: A Proposal For Open Distance Learning, Sujatha Gurram
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Information and communication technologies have brought significant changes in all-round development of the society through transmission of information. Information is the fulcrum for power and wealth and very crucial for economic and social development of the society. In India, a number of digital library initiatives and digitization programmes have been initiated across the country. Most of the digital library initiatives are government funded. The Ministry of Communications and Information technology has also established the Digital Library of India. This paper discusses various problems, challenges and issues involved in design and development of digital libraries in India.
The paper highlights the …

Ambient Findability And Structured Serendipity: Enjhanced Resource Discovery For Full Text Collections, Alison Stevenson, Conal Tuohy, Jamie Norrish
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
University Libraries manage increasingly large collections of full text digital resources. These might be repositories of born digital research outputs, e-reserves collections or online libraries of material digitised to provide open access to significant texts. Whatever the content of the material, the structured data of full text resources can be exploited to enhance research discovery. The implicit connections and cross-references between books and papers, which occur in all print collections, can be made explicit in a collection of electronic texts. Correctly encoded and exposed they create a framework to support resource discovery and navigation both within and between texts by …
Creating A Culture Of Data Integration And Interoperability: Librarians And Earth Science Faculty Collaborate On A Geoinformatics Course, Michael Fosmire, Chris Miller
Creating A Culture Of Data Integration And Interoperability: Librarians And Earth Science Faculty Collaborate On A Geoinformatics Course, Michael Fosmire, Chris Miller
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
One aspect of the development of an e-infrastructure for research discovery that is often overlooked is the human element. Data is only as interoperable as the scientists who are willing to meet data standards and share their work with others. Information literacy in the data world has at least as many challenges as it does in the world of documents. For example, the provenance of data, who collected it, how they collected it, and whether and how it has been verified, are all very important factors for researchers to consider before incorporating external data into their analyses. With this in …

Digitization Initiatives: A Reconnaissance Of The Global Landscape, Marinus Swanepoel
Digitization Initiatives: A Reconnaissance Of The Global Landscape, Marinus Swanepoel
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Digitization has become quite a buzzword around libraries and library organizations. Conferences, symposia and workshops on digitization are becoming more popular and many general conferences feature a technology or digitization track.
A factor contributing to the popularity of digitization is that the technology required for basic digitization is very affordable. It is therefore not uncommon to find an under funded enthusiast doing excellent work, making content available through a free hosting service on the Internet and using only a simple digital camera and/or scanner, bought for a couple of hundred dollars.
The proliferation of local digitization initiatives great and small …

Birck and NCN Publications
Recent advances in metamaterial research have provided us a blueprint for realistic cloaking capabilities, and it is crucial to develop practical designs to convert concepts into real-life devices. We present two structures for optical cloaking based on high-order transformations for TM and TE polarizations respectively. These designs are possible for visible and infrared wavelengths. This critical development builds upon our previous work on nonmagnetic cloak designs and high-order transformations.

Few would dispute that the rapidly escalating cost of health care is one of the most pressing issues facing our nation today. Even a cursory review of the media reveals intense public concern over a healthcare system that can use the most advanced technology to miraculous therapeutic effect, but whose emergent behavior is far from ideal. Rapidly rising healthcare costs threaten the competitiveness of U. S. manufacturing and service companies in the global econmy, creating intense pressure to move offshore. Indeed one can make the case that the best way to help competitiveness prospects for U. S. industries as a …
