Assessing Pedagogy In Bioengineering Classrooms: Quantifying Elements Of The “How People Learn” Model Using The Vanth Observation System (Vos), Monica F. Cox, David S. Cordray Oct 2008

Assessing Pedagogy In Bioengineering Classrooms: Quantifying Elements Of The “How People Learn” Model Using The Vanth Observation System (Vos), Monica F. Cox, David S. Cordray

School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications

One goal of the VaNTH Engineering Research Center is to estimate the effects of the “value added” to bioengineering student learning as a result of “How People Learn” (HPL) framework interventions. A necessary step in that process is to assess pedagogical differences in both lecture-based and HPL-oriented courses. Data from 28 bioengineering courses, over five semesters, were analyzed using a newly developed HPL Index. This index, developed from the Classroom Interaction Observation portion of the VaNTH Observation System, reports levels of HPL-inspired pedagogy, traditional pedagogy, and classroom organization within a class using codes for different types of faculty and student …

Localized Heating And Thermal Characterization Of High Electrical Resistivity Silicon-On-Insulator Sensors Using Nematic Liquid Crystals, Oguz H. Elibol, Bobby Reddy Jr., Rashid Bashir Sep 2008

Localized Heating And Thermal Characterization Of High Electrical Resistivity Silicon-On-Insulator Sensors Using Nematic Liquid Crystals, Oguz H. Elibol, Bobby Reddy Jr., Rashid Bashir

Birck and NCN Publications

We present a method for localized heating of media at the surface of silicon-on-insulator field-effect sensors via application of an ac voltage across the channel and the substrate and compare this technique with standard Joule heating via the application of dc voltage across the source and drain. Using liquid crystals as the medium to enable direct temperature characterization, our results show that under comparable bias conditions, heating of the medium using an alternating field results in a greater increase in temperature with a higher spatial resolution. These features are very attractive as devices are scaled to the nanoscale dimensions. (C) …

Librarians, Advocacy And The Research Enterprise, D. Scott Brandt Sep 2008

Librarians, Advocacy And The Research Enterprise, D. Scott Brandt

Libraries Research Publications

Opportunities are opening up to create and promote new roles for librarians, identifying and building new services, and ultimately increasing funding and visibility for the academic library, especially given the evolving nature of research in a data intensive environment. Advocating the research enterprise means working with researchers on problems, and often on proposals for grants to pay for the work. But foremost it means making introductions, building rapport, being able to follow up and follow through on communication, developing relationships and forging partnerships.

Graphene Segregated On Ni Surfaces And Transferred To Insulators, Qingkai Yu, Jie Lian, Sujitra Siriponglert, Hao Li, Yong P. Chen, Shin-Shem Pei Sep 2008

Graphene Segregated On Ni Surfaces And Transferred To Insulators, Qingkai Yu, Jie Lian, Sujitra Siriponglert, Hao Li, Yong P. Chen, Shin-Shem Pei

Birck and NCN Publications

We report an approach to synthesize high quality graphene by surface segregation and substrate transfer. Graphene was segregated from Ni surface under the ambient pressure by dissolving carbon in Ni at high temperatures followed by cooling down with various rates. Different cooling rates led to different segregation behaviors, strongly affecting the thickness and quality of the graphene films. Electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy indicated that the graphene films synthesized with medium cooling rates have high quality crystalline structure and well-controlled thicknesses. The graphene films were transferred to insulating substrates by wet etching and found to maintain their high quality. (C) …

Global Transcriptional Response Of The Alkalitolerant Cyanobacterium Synechocystis Sp. Strain Pcc 6803 To Ph 10., Tina C. Summerfield, Louis A. Sherman Sep 2008

Global Transcriptional Response Of The Alkalitolerant Cyanobacterium Synechocystis Sp. Strain Pcc 6803 To Ph 10., Tina C. Summerfield, Louis A. Sherman

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Many cyanobacterial strains are able to grow at a pH range from neutral to pH 10 or 11. Such alkaline conditions favor cyanobacterial growth (e.g., bloom formation), and cyanobacteria must have developed strategies to adjust to changes in CO2 concentration and ion availability. Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803 exhibits similar photoautotrophic growth characteristics at pH 10 and pH 7.5, and we examined global gene expression following transfer from pH 7.5 to pH 10 to determine cellular adaptations at an elevated pH. The strategies used to develop homeostasis at alkaline pH had elements similar to those of many bacteria, as …

Geographies Of Nation And Region In Modern European And American Fiction, Thomas O. Beebee Sep 2008

Geographies Of Nation And Region In Modern European And American Fiction, Thomas O. Beebee

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Geographies of Nation and Region in Modern European and American Fiction" Thomas O. Beebee proposes that beyond using character, plot, and style, modern fiction also has entertained its readers with mental maps of heterotopias. A mental map is an imaginative representation of place derived from experience or story. Following Michel Foucault, heterotopia is defined as an "other space" both familiar as and different from the real. The "imagined communities" (Anderson) of nation and region are themselves heterotopias that receive confirmation and/or contestation through the discursive territoriality of literary prose. The mental maps of literature participate in the …
